this is stupid, FREE WESLEY SNIPES!!!!! like we don't have better things to do. there are murderers and rapists going free and they let that little tramp lindsey lohan out after 30 days. just put him on a payment plan and let him go he is not a criminal. putting him in prison for 3 years is, we can't afford that!! the rich just got more tax breaks!! lindsey lohan stole a car and nearly killed people driving and she got less than 30 days. my advise for Mr. Snipes, do drugs, they won't keep you then!! this is so stupid why is this man in jail!! LET HIM PAY AND LET HIM GO!!! for god's sake he is not a criminal!!

EXACTLY!! Somebody understands! It's taxes?? whats the big deal here? he make millions right? have him write a check.. or a payment plan. Our justice system is pathetic! We have rapists, drug dealers and murderers walking free and an innocent person like Wesley Snipes goes to jail? really?

The morons who are making light of this or questioning the sentence obviously don't have a clue of the magnitude of the crime this jerk committed. He is heading exactly where he belongs.
And thanks, Larry King, for again giving me a reason not to watch your show. Watching you fawn over a "celebrity" and enabling criminal behavior is just too much to take.

Why can't he just pay his share? I don't understand the sympathy for this man. We all need roads and firefighters don't we? We all use them. It is selfish and anti-american to not pay your taxes. I don't see why a man of such means would expect others to should his burden.

Ahhhhhh Wesley, after three years, and you haven't signed a form,–what's wrong with this picture (I know I do mine every 5 years)? Without a racial bone in my body–you got "The Kingfisher" arguing your case (on Larry King). What happened in other cases–don't mean "jack dick" on your specific case. The secondary black guy–is blowing black smoke/KKK arguements–give me a friggin break.

Snipes got rich off of this country and now doesn't want to give back? The GOP and Tea Party fringe, have convinced so many that a country can be ran on NOTHING. I suppose they think we shouldn't have to pay the solders who protect this country. They don't appreciate the good things a developed nation offers, and are attempting to go to the 3rd world order-think Brazil or Hatti, where the rich just take and never give back? I pay my taxes, and I don't mind that some of the money goes to help others.

My concern is that it was "misdemeanor" charges, and he get's "prison time"? I thought only felonies got prison...guess I don't know the Fed system well. Nevertheless, putting Snipes in "jail", when he's "no threat to society" and I pay taxes to feed/cloth and house him the next 3 years...really isn't that smart of our Government! And comparatively speaking, when has someone got 3 years or more for this same crime? Besides Al Capone?

Some don't learn from others mistakes. If Mr. Snipes is the first celebrity to go to jail for tax invasion, I would have pity for him. He is by no means a toddler who can't read or write. But, he consciously decide to learn the hard way. Three years jail time will not kill him. Hopefully, he learns. No individual is bigger than the People. You can't eat People's money and get away with it. It will catch up with you. Period.

@dick and @george, my kids are post-college, now-involuntarily unemployed adults, drug-free, alcohol-free, intelligent hard working, good people who simply cannot find work. They are still my kids, even though they are now adults, and they eat just as much and consume just as much hot water and electricity as minor children would. But there IS no EIC. And I would not dream of throwing them out on the street when they have done nothing but try to help out and try to find work.

So yes, I DO pay taxes.

@dick and @george, it's one thing to be jaded and skeptical of people. But don't go throwing judgments and pronouncements out there based on having only a tiny fraction of information about the people you judge. That's called making assumptions. And I hope you know what it means to assume.

Your statement "Forget everything you've been educated on about justice, good will, and righteousness" is what got him 3 years in jail and the humiliation that came with it. In all that you do ensure that justice, good will, and righteousness is exemplified. Of course no man is perfect; but Mr. Snipes was grossly negligent. Charlie Rangel's IRS fraud is substantially worse than anyone else's IRS crime – ever. Why? Because Rangel was the head of the IRS rules committee for over 20 years. Rangel is the one person, in the entire world, who knows better than to defraud the U.S. tax system. Rangel is an elected official who has a legal and moral obligation to every person in the U.S. to uphold the laws that he himself created (with bicameral approval). He made the law and believed he was above the law. By believing the tax laws apply to everyone by himself, Charlie Rangel's fraud is against every singly American citizen.

Obama should be impeached – fraud against the American people is most certainly a high crime and misdemeanor. Mr. Obama has taken the Bush league approach to lie, cheat, steal, torture and assasinate his enemies.

Bush should be imprisoned for criminal stupidity. That idiot cannot even string together a coherent sentence. The 9/11 terrorists were all Saudi citizens financed by Saudi politicians. Bush Sr. sat on the board of directors for the world's largest military defense company owned by the Bin Laden family. He lied about WMD in Iraq. He lied about why the U.S. needed to invade Afghanistan. He directed the torture of prisoners. He oversaw the U.S. murdering over 650,000 innocent Iraqi women and children. He oversaw and direct the murders of over 100,000 innocent Afghani women and children.

Cheney is a disgustingly ugly man who hates gays (and his daughter is gay). He personally disclosed the name of an active CIA agent (Plame) as revenge against her husband (Wilson). As a result, Plames foreign contacts were murdered, this includes innocent women and children of her contacts.

Note that he didn't file tax returns for 1999-2001 (3 yrs) and owed $17 million. Charlie Rangel doesn't match up to this at all!!! And the cost of the trial and housing Wesley in jail for 3 yrs (probably less with good behavior) isn't anything close to the $17 million! I live near Ocala and followed the case. Wesley is a likeable guy but he believed a lie because he wanted to get away with not paying his obligations while many of us paid!

There is two sets of rules, one for politicians and one for everybody else.

Congressman Charles Rangel heads up the Tax writing committee that sets the rules for the IRS not only refused to pay taxes on his estate in Puerto Rico but then lied about it to Congress. His penalty? All of the Congress voted and told him, "Next time do not get caught."

In failing to act against Mr. Rangel, the U.S. Congress admits that it is THE most corrupt organization in the country.

Comparing Rangel and Snipes is like apples and oranges. Rangel tried to get help for a charity. Dubya and Cheney are war criminals. Cheney is a wanted man. Neither can leave the country for fear of arrest.

For the people comparing Rangel and Snipes, there's a huge difference. Rangel failed to report income from an income property he owned in the Dominican Republic.

Snipes is actually a tax protestor, and has been for years. Meaning, he did not file taxes because he thinks the government has no right to impose them, based on extremely ridiculous arguments that have been denied by the courts for decades. This is a fairly widespread conspiracy theory belief, that taxes are somehow not required, and it's all a sham.

This had been pointed out to him over and over, and he continued the same behavior, making the same excuses that he wasn't required to pay. When the trial finally happened, the 'attorneys' who had instructed (and coddled) him into making these bad decisions were dropped from his legal team, and his new excuse was the he had been 'duped'.

If memory serves correctly, his jail time is a result of willful denial of tax laws, not because he was 'duped'. You can't claim that taxes are illegal for years, throw it in the government's face, and then say, 'Oh, I was just kidding around' once it comes to trial. I'm glad he's going away...he deserves it.

Hey Brandon, Snipes has a will. He is willing to dump it all for what he believes in. Putting people in jail for tax evasion is deplorable.Your contempt will bite you in the ass. They picked the wrong person to fool with. He made his money for the work he did; why should we have to pay for our good deeds? Jesus was against tax collection. Wesley is against tax collection. We have tax laws for a reason and the citizens that come to live here or are born here yet don't like the laws and think they shouldn't apply to them because they don't like them; there are consequences to every action – unfortunately for Wesley it's jail. I think Brandon's post is on the mark and says the fact straight out.

In regards to taxes, tax credits are stupid....do we really want tax credits later...no! We want tax credits now! If you dont want to give us tax credits now, then dont offer them! End taxation! How does our country pay for debts without taxation?...It's easy, we put our money in your Government banks and the interest pays, a national lottery, realistic military spending(not paying $200 for a plane toilet seat)-– Government taxing forces corporations to tax the people even more. If you are going to tax us we should have the right to tax you. Eliminate taxation, it is proof we are still under a monarchy. Taxation is old and unfair.

This case has not nothing to do with racism, but that being said it is a travesty. Martha Stewart who last time I looked is white went to jail on B.S. charges that she manipulated the price of the stock of her company. People on Wall Street drove this country to the brink of financial disaster with their legalized corruption and no one served a minute of time. Corporations get away with not paying taxes all the time because they have the best lawyers money can buy. The feds should make Snipes pay the money and/or do community service. For him to sit in jail is B.S. in this case.

As some have said already, it boils down to not filing taxes for 3 years – You really can't compare the Congressman's case to Snipes case. I do think the sentence was harsh but then again I was not present in the court room nor was I able to note Snipes reaction/demeanor to the whole process. I seriously doubt he will serve his whole sentence but is it deserved? – sorry, he knew what he was doing and that it was wrong – you do the crime, you do the time – why should he get special treatment when any person off the street would have problem been in the same boat. Again I really don't compare the two cases of the Congressman and Snipes – separate issues as far as I'm concerned.

Finally, I get to post a comment to an article! What's with CNN? For most of their articles there are no means to post a comment.

With regard to Mr. Snypes' tax difficulties, I see that many comments are directed towards congressmen for failing to pay their taxes also. Keep in mind everyone, that it is we, the "sheeple", who choose and vote for our Congress people to represnt us in DC. That's what happened in 2008 and that's what happened this year. Personally, I'm sick and tired of only having two choices (for the most part) when election time rolls around. We either vote for the party of "No Ideas" or vote for the party of "Bad Ideas", to steal a quote from Lewis Black.

All I can say, is you get what you pay for. Keep voting for these morons (either Dems or Reps) and you will keep getting the same outcome. Remember this, "The epitomy of stupidity is trying the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result." As far as I'm concerned, we need to get rid of the entire lot. Vote them out and establish term limits. The last thing we need is another lifer like Robert Byrd or Ted Kennedy! (No offense intended for those of you from West Virrginia or Massachusetts.) Also remember that your vote does count.

And people please its all a game. The wealthy against the poor. The whites against the blacks. The conservatives against the liberals. It's easy to keep you controlled when you are always arguing about something. Wake up!! While we are blaming Obama and/or Bush, the economy is getting worse, people are losing jobs and we are no better than we were 20 yrs ago. Stop arguing and start really looking at facts not the fiction that gets you upset and takes you away from the issues.

@ Everyone–Snipes didn't pay taxes he needs to be face some sort of reprecussions. I agree about the irony mentioned earlier- that taxes will now pay to 'house' a person that didn't pay taxes to begin with. The IRS should just recoup their money and move on with the understanding that if he does it again-he goes to jail. At the same time none of us are his accountants or financial advisors–how do we know that he didn't get bad advice from people entrusted to handle these affairs for him?? I believe that the only reason the feds initiated the charges was to make an example. The gov't is not run by idiots- although they often seem that way- but by very smart and calculating people that have hundreds of years of political history from which they derive their tactics. They were able to forsee the economic collapse of '08 and were scrambling to soften the blow in as many areas and ways possible. They figure that if they can get a high profile scapegoat- it'll scare others into coughing up the dough they owe, as well. What Snipes meant by the 'white IRS' are the administrators- the decision/policy makers in DC, not lowly federal employees in local offices. As a black man in America- it doesn't take an incredible leap of faith to know that statement may have more merit than most are willing to admit. As far as POTUS Obama and the 'never want to pay taxes' comment- I don't recall EVER hearing that in ANY statment President Obama made or see in evidenced in his policies. What I see and hear is him having a genuine gameplan to fight this uphill battle to help America regain our footing in the world economy. He wants those who have an abundance of money(who just happen to be the majority of the complaining minority) to do their part and give everyone else an honest chance to raise our families and have a real shot at the 'American Dream' by taking inventory of where the taxes we currently pay are going and how the allocuted funds are utilized. Cut spending where you can, still have the best interest of the American citizens in mind, protect Americans home and abroad, and try to get bi-partisan support (from many of the culprits who are to blame for the current state of the nation) to do it. The man has one hell of a task at hand- it's one thing to clean up someone else's mess, but I know I'd be damned if they gonna tell me how to hold the broom while I do it. -Racism still alive, they just be concealining it. It's no surprise that given his wealth, he fell for a nonsensical movement that believes in their right to not pay taxes. Don't feel sorry for him. However, it is outrageous that people like Rangel and Geitner, people who cannot use dumbness as an excuse, evade taxes and it's all explained away as "bad record keeping".

Ahh.... And no other person, of any race/color/creed, causes ANY problems? The whites force "minorities" to make poor decisions? The whites force "minorities" to commit crimes? The whites force "minority" women to have six children out of wedlock with four different men? The whites force "minorities" into receiving public assistance for life, while they keep squeezing out more babies? The whites force "minorities" to receive public assistance so they can then drive around town in their luxury cars, spend hundreds of dollars on their hair, nails and designer clothes – all at the white taxpayer's expense? The whites force you to drop out of school and thus limit you to a lifetime of low-paying jobs? Ahh... I see. Man up, already. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and take responsibility for yourself and your actions. Whites do the exact same things I listed above. The difference is that 99.9 percent of whites don't insist on pulling the race card and don't insist on blaming anyone and everyone except themselves for their lot in life. A minority makes poor decisions and it is automatically someone else's fault. There's no accountability. You say you want equal rights? Wrong... You want special/superior rights.

I tend to agree with you about only jailing people who are a physical danger to society. However, the reality of that situation is that many white criminals would not get jail time and would be stripped of their assets instead. This would lead to an even more disproportional level of minorities in jail and would obviously lead to claims of racism in sentencing, with claims that they are buying their way out of jail.

Lol another fine example we have here, proud Tea Party member. It seems to me there was a group of people who looked at the recent election of 2008. They saw a masterful plan unfold. Unable to stop the tide and recognizing the genius in the execution, the Tea Party was formed to imitate the success of the Democrates in 2008. It is the easiest and smart to ensure equal success. But the motivation and objectives of the Tea Party are divisive. Regaining the banner of superiority and the privileged to recognize the basic philosophy, that if you r weak and can't get up you deserve to die. That if you can not find a way to design a business or be apart of an organization that presents a front of legitimate purpose that's sole purpose is to generate profits at all cost, you have failed. Big business is king. The Tea Party has modeled it mode of proceeding to that of the Democrates most recent Presidental victory. Their purpose is to build momentum to get buy in to their narrow veiws of the haves and step on the have nots. This view is old as Indian peace treaties and false idea of fairness. Tea party a mask of the new oppressor

Those roads that he drives on are smooth because you paid taxes to keep those roads in good repair. That water he drinks is safe to drink because your taxes paid to regulate how many toxins can be in it. The food he eats in restaurants doesn't make him sick because your taxes paid the Health Department to makes sure the kitchen and food are clean.

I'm a single mom working 2 full time jobs and supporting 2 kids on a total of only $28k a year, and I paid more in taxes than a millionaire like Wesley Snipes did. I don't resent paying taxes; I realize their necessity to society. But those of us who contribute to a functioning society should be OUTRAGED at those who are too selfish to do their part, yet expect to benefit from what the rest of us pay for.

@DICK She she would. Bush did not eliminate taxes for anyone except those who make 12,000 or less, by giving them an earned income tax credit. That drops off way below 28K, and it was enacted by Clinton, not Bush. Check your facts before you blindly sing the praises of Republican tax philosophy. Like the Republican view now that they oppose raising tax on people who make over 1,000,000 a year, yet they will cut off unemployment checks COMPLETELY for folks who don't even have jobs. What hipocracy. More of the same Republican "trickle down" hoodwink.

Julia, Obviously tax preparation is too complex for you to understand. I advise you to take your return to H&R block, pay the $200 and have them do it right, then you will see that you pay no effective income tax. Just because you see a tax rate listed doesn't mean you end up paying any tax at all. Less than half of american workers pay that income tax.

What Dick said. Likely your income is somewhat limited by your inability to properly understand complex math...that leaves me paying large amounts of taxes to subsidize the services you use, despite your lack of tax paying.

    • Julia Randolph, J.D.

@DICK and Smartandpaid: Now both of you are not checking your facts before speaking or before trying to insult me. It would probably surprise you to know that I have a law degree from Duke and education in taxes and that I make more than $50,000 a year. I may or may not make as much as you, Mr. paid, but I may enough to know that I do pay taxes. I do understand "complex" taxes, but this is not complex. Here's the deal: If you do not get back all of the Federal Withholding that is taken from your check (Not Social Security, I know that doesn't come back, of course), then you pay taxes. Ann knows whether she gets a refund or not, more than you do. If Ann says she does not get a refund, that means she pays taxes, because its taken out of every check but is not given back to her. If the government keeps any of your money, then you pay taxes. Period. So again, you both may want to learn more about the people you are trying to talk about before you make assumptions to fuel your points that are wrong and instead make your point look as dumb as it is. I feel where you're coming from, Ann. Nothing else needs to be said in response to these "know-it-alls . . . not".

@dick you obviously have never been a struggling single mom. I am intelligent and understand tax code perfectly well, but I am not in a financial position to own property. This means I cannot take deductions for mortgage interest or property taxes. I don't own a business, so I can't take business deductions. I don't use my vehicle for business, so I can't take vehicle or travel deductions, I don't "do" business lunches, so I can't take those deductions, I am also not in a position to donate so much to charity that I could take charitable deductions - not when every spare penny is much needed to keep us out of the food bank, so we don't take food from those who don't even have jobs and need it even more. Which means my standard deduction is greater than anything I could itemize.

Instead, it is my wealthy slumlord who gets all the tax breaks, while I pay the taxes on all my income over the standard deduction. That is still more than Wesley Snipes paid. He refused to pay ANY taxes.

So @dick and @george, it's one thing to be jaded and skeptical of people. But don't go throwing judgments and pronouncements out there based on having only a tiny fraction of information about the people you judge. That's called making assumptions. And I hope you know what it means to assume.

People like me want HONEST discourse. people present all these arguments backed by "Facts," but when confronted by truth they claim you're racist or whatever.
The fact still remains that, if what you are now saying is true, that you can file as head of household and still get more than you paid in taxes back..... If you aren't I suggest you go do what I mentioned in the first comment and take your return to H&R Block.

    • Ann

@DICK there you go making assumptions again. Full time is whatever the EMPLOYER defines as the standard full-time work week – usually anything over 35 hours per week. The standard 40-hour work week for minimum wage earners disappeared along with most of the low-wage jobs a long time ago.

      Job #1: $7.25 x 36 hours/week = 261 x 51 paid weeks per year (no paid vacations, but unpaid forced week during slow summer season) = $13,311 at Job #1. Job #2: $7.30 x 38 hours = 277.40 x 52 weeks = 14,424. Job 1 + Job 2 = LESS than 27,736. I work an extra half hour or hour overtime whenever it's available and whenever it doesn't conflict with the other job, which isn't often.

I'm not asking for pity. I'm just sticking up for 98% of simple hard-working people in this country, who are up against intolerant, over-privileged, selfish know-it-all's like you. It's WE, the ordinary working-class, who DO pay taxes, and who have the most reason to be outraged at people like Snipes. And that, after all, is the original topic of this article.

Now, I don't have any more time to waste on you, @Dick (very appropriate name for you, by the way. I'll leave it at that, rather than lower myself to your level of vitriol.) I have a job to get to and a family to provide a home for.

@ Dick Once again, you made the wrong assumption. Ann can't even use a child for that credit, which also means she has NO EIC. so while you and Dan and whoever else keeps telling Ann what she is doing, ANN KNOWS THAT SHE PAYS TAXES. That's all there is to it. @Dan. The only reason that is the case is BECAUSE of this latest deal. Republicans DID want it to stop. Check your facts and check what other actually say before responding and again, sounding uninformed, judging, ignorant, and having way too much to say about someone's situation that you REALLY know nothing about. Did any of you speaking on Ann's situation even ask her what it is before espousing all your ill-informed opinions? Now on that, we CAN ASSUME the answer is no.
@Ann – Your situation is your situation. Your comment about the real problem opinions is well stated and well taken. too bad those same people will not consider they may have been mistaken. It's those that need to. But here again, that is part of the problem with the political conversation in this country. You know your situation. I hear you!! He is going to prison for not filing three years worth of tax returns (tax evasion) not for tax cheating or fraud. There is no "debtor" prison, but there is a prison for failing to follow the laws of the United States, which requires everyone with "earned" income to file a federal tax return

Everyone is comparing this to congressmen.
How about Ken Lay, Jeffrey Skilling, Bernie Madoff or Bernie Evers (Worldcom, in case you forgot).

All of a sudden according to the fickle American public, it is the politicians who are the crooks.
If I were a rich, crooked head of industry/banker, that is EXACTLY what I would want you to think. And once my bank and I could contribute to a group to make negative campaign ads, i could spend millions to distract citizens from the billions my company/bank was escaping with. And the American public just laps it up.
Bankers almost broke the WORLD and now earn larger bonuses than ever. THATS their punishment. How much did Charlie Rangel get away with? I'm not saying that Wesley or Charlie should be excused. I just want them to have company from Citigroup or Bank of America, so those clowns will be a lot more careful next time!

Wesley Snipes is a good man and a god actor, he did a crime, he'll do his time. But for the idiot in congress that did the same thing, he should be tried in open court, and sentenced, no special treatment.

Beat your wife, maybe 90 days in jail. Car jacking, maybe a year or two. Get busted not paying taxes 3 years. Our so called justice system has its priorities all screwed up. Not saying he shouldn't be held responsible. But 3 years. Which cost how much in taxes.

Hmm, 3 years seems a bit much for not paying your taxes. Not saying that he shouldn't get some type of punishment...I just find it sad. There's been murder cases where the accused only got 2 years.

gotta make an example outa somebody I guess..............wonder how many millions in unpaid taxes slip through the cracks with illieagl immigration. If Snipes got free hospital care, free schooling, free everything else and didn't pay taxes maybe he should have been striped of his citizenship and then 'still' allowed to live in our conutry working and not paying any taxes. What? he paid no taxes at all?....................what a joke. Just garnish his future earnings via the database of social security numbers so he can keep earning not jail him so he can't. How's he gonna contribute to the cofers of the illeagals from in jail?

I don't know the specifics of his case, but if he blatantly avoided paying taxes, he should go to jail. Everyone else has to pay. If he got away with it many others would stop paying.

      Russ,

specifically, he didn't file tax returns for 8 or 9 years.....he had about $40 million of income during that time; so figure up to $15 million in taxes not paid. That would be if he had no tax deductions or tax shelters at all.

FWIW.....he has had ties to an organization that believes that the Feds have no rights to tax.....so it appears that this was no......accident.

Now you know the government's priorities – kill someone – two years. Don't fill their till – 3 years. The Fed's main goal is to keep their jobs, and keep their masters happy. If they lose out on money – they ain't happy!
I wouldn't care about WS getting 3 years if so many politicians and bankers hadn't walked all over us and kept going.
      Priorities, indeed!

After researching the other side of the story, I feel Mr. Snipes is fortunate to have received only a three year sentence. Like Michael Vick, his eventual downfall seems to stem from associating with the wrong type of people. I don't buy his trust argument either. Too many red flags developed in the course of events here which could have minimized if not totally eliminated his exposure to being heavily involved in breaking the law.

    @james: how about this one:
An arrest warrant is soon to be issued for former Vice President Dick Cheney, according to Godwin Obla, prosecuting counsel at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, located in Abuja, Nigeria. The warrant, according to Obla, is for allegedly being part of an bribery scandal involving Halliburton Co and five other foreign companies totaling over $180 million in an effort to secure a $6 billion liquefied natural-gas contract in the 1990s.

Cheney was CEO of Halliburton and its former engineering and construction unit KBR Inc., from 1995 to 2000, when he left to be the Vice Presidential running mate of George Bush.
