Susan Boyle hits a rough note on 'The View'

Susan Boyle got a little choked up during a rendition of “O Holy Night” on “The View” Tuesday, but sadly, the "Britain's Got Talent" sensation didn’t recover.

It’s a moment that was seen by East coasters who were tuned in to the daytime program, and (by now) peeps with Internet access, as the video’s been making its rounds on the Web.

It all started out well enough, with Sherri Shepherd introducing the chart-topper, who was there to promote her new album, "The Gift."

Dressed elegantly, Boyle approached the mic and launched into the lyrics of the holiday classic. But mid-song, right after the point where one would sing, “Oh, hear the angels voices,” Boyle hit a rough note that caused her to come to a full halt.

She turned to stop the music, and as Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg joined her on the stage, it was explained that she’d had a frog in her throat.

Boyle, who is expected to perform at the Christmas tree lighting special tonight on NBC, taped a do-over without the hiccups for the West coast, according to EW.com.

I saw John Prine lose some of the lyrics to a song he *wrote* (and has performed thousands of times in 40 yrs) on Saturday night. He's a seasoned pro, let the song go around again on the guitar, laughed and went on. It made him seem even more human, real and a bit humble. This happens to the most professional of performers, not just to talented newcomers like Susan Boyle. The instant stardom did rob her of the dues-paying years that teach a performer how to play these inevitibilities off gracefully. She will get there. YOU GO SUSAN!

What nobody else has mentioned on here is that due to bad weather in Scotland Susan was not able to fly to the US as scheduled. She had to wait till the next day for a flight. She was fighting jet lag as well as a tight schedule to try to fit everything in during her short stay. Anyone else might have said to heck with it, I'm tired, my ears are still adjusting to ground level and I haven't had a decent nights sleep. But being the trouper she is and not wanting to disappoint her fans, she got up on that stage and attempted to sing. She didn't forget the lyrics to the song. She is a perfectionist who only wants to give her best. Like the lady she is, she stopped the performance with dignity and grace. In her own way she showed millions of people true humbleness and that it's okay to be human.

If you didn't get to see her re do it for the west coast viewing audience – she belted it out of the ballpark!

She has a stunning voice and I'm glad she is sharing it with the world. To me she is beautiful inside and out.

Interesting that CNN and the Marque Blog chose THIS clip instead of her perfect NBC performance LIVE last night at the christmas tree lighting in NY... or the redo of The View performance that was perfect. Anyone who has ever sang alone or in a group could hear the "frog" in her throat. When she was allowed to clear it and sing the song again which was posted on The View website, Susan was lovely as usual. Get a life people!! This was not news. This borders on bullying... and we wonder where the kids are learning it! How about we look in the mirror... show some love for goodness sake!

I was a cellist in 2 of her performances with back-up orchestra this past year-at this talent level, it shows very poor preparation when you completely stop and/or make awkward faces when you have a lyric problem. Her handlers and coaches have not given her proper instruction if her solution is to flat out stop. Most "live" concerts cannot just stop, you lose the audience when the artist shows error. Is it unfair that she is heavily scrutinized? Debatable. Under the microscope that is celebrity, this comes with the territory. The "frog in her throat" or whatever her PR people want to call it is just damage control. Lyrics and lack of preparation are to blame. There are ways to make up for "flubs" on the spot...i.e., make words up, sing open syllables, etc. The pros do this all of the time. At her level, this should not have happened.

I agree!! You are spot on. Also, she had the opportunity to have a "do-over" for the West Coast feed. How often do top artists get to have do-overs on "live" tv or in a live concert? This never happens. ABC was very accommodating to allow this considering it was on her end that the flub happened. She messed up. We all know she is good. When you are this good, these flubs should be non-existent. I will say it is unfair, but that is what she signed up for in this business.

Agreed. This also comes down to the fact she is not a teen pop star or the likes...the classical genre in which she embodies does not allow glitches on her part. This genre is much more perfectionist-oriented (as the vocals are very meticulous and exposed). Most top classical artists are held to a higher standard by the nature of the genre. It is a commanding genre and as such, she should know how to recover and get through a performance without giving up and receiving a generous "do-over" from ABC.

This is the bane of overnight sensations...they didn't start at small venues and develop, moving to bigger and bigger ones as they become more conditioned, become more capable mentally of handling the situation, and they have to learn how to handle this sort of incident in front of millions who have high expectations instead of in small unknown venues when people are too busy talking, drinking, or playing pool to care what you're doing...and in such a venue you learn how to deal with this cooly and calmly instead of freaking out...Susan Boyle's story is a fascinating one in many ways, but it's going to become a tragic one if she and her managers don't realize the difference between her situation and other entertainers and take steps to deal with it.....

Good for her. In this day and age many singers would have a "band in a can" on a show like that and lip sync to it. The fact that she did it live means she takes what she does very seriously and she's humble enough to react honestly to the snafu. How refreshing, Susan. Keep it up. I guarantee you even Celine Dion DOESN'T DO IT IN ONE TAKE!

    And that's the truth.

The woman is an amateur, after all.

How many of these amateur-hour contests have occurred in the last ten years – and how many people are still around? A handful, at most.

Nice lady, nice that she's rich, but don't expect much by way of really stunning, professional singing.

kd, it is a common phenomenon for performers to have "do-overs"; that's why most performances aren't live; I grew up around the business; my mother was a headliner in Broadway nightclubs, my sis was in the New Christy Minstrels, my dad an Academy Award nominee, and ;my uncle was a producer/songwriter with 5 Academy Awards. I am bringing this up only to let you know that I have some knowledge in the matter. It seems Susan wasn't aware this was to be a live performance, but these things happen. All of us who sing know this. Susan Boyle is a beautiul person with an angelic voice; she is superbly talented.

She is little more than a circus freak.. she can sing about as well as many people who have a trained voice and no better.. The witless consumers that buy the fallacy peddled by Simon Cowell and his minions would do better by giving their money to charity, rather than squandering it on this mediocrity. True charity is borne out of human compassion, not simply the manipulative practices of a profit-making television spectacle, whose greater aim is to humiliate most of those who take part, whilst exploiting the occasional idiosyncratic sensation such as Susan Boyle.

Here's the deal people – when 99% of the "singers" out there are lip syncing to EVERYTHING (including live concerts that you just paid $150 a seat for) it's a tribute to this woman that she had the guts to sing something LIVE!!! Especially when she was having vocal problems. Kudos to her for trying!! To so many of you who criticize her weight,,,everyone is not a size 6-get over it!! Would you have criticized Pavoratti (sp?) I do not think so. She has a great voice second to none that I have heard. Her performance at Rockfeller Center last night was very well done. All performers have moments. By the way, at Rockfeller Center last night, the young performer from the the Philippines did not do so well with Jingle Bell Rock either........ Susan, you just keep on doing what you do so well....just slow down and rest your voice.

As a side note, there is absolutely no reason for people to be unnecessarily cruel in their remarks...it only shows a weakness in your character. Remember when one points their index finger (figuratively) at someone else you have three pointing back at you. No one is perfect.

Did you hear the applause following her stopping singing ?(check her CD sales and downloads if you doubt her following). Also, if the oxygen deprivation at birth which has caused her problems throughout her life had anything to do with this, do you think we value her any the less? You could not possibly be a fan to have said this. Happily your opinion doesn't count for much in the equation.

It's easy to criticize when you've never performed. I'm nowhere near Ms. Boyle when it comes to singing, but I had a moment much like that as a senior in high school. I was selected to sing the National Anthem in front of the entire student body. I worked for weeks on it, and I knew the song completely. I had it down pat. Then I got in front of everybody and got nervous. Part way through, I was horrified when I forgot the lyrics. I ended up skipping a few beats and starting off again at "At the rockets red glare." Susan is performing on a much larger stage than I could ever dream, so I can hardly imagine some of the feelings she must have being on national TV and getting worldwide attention. I just know how easy it is to be taken by the moment and to completely lose it. So, no judging her or any singer for flubbing a performance from me... I just hope that if you ever flub up like that, people are as gracious as my friends were when I flubbed and not at all like you are now.

As an amateur musician, I agree with Mark–the hardest thing when you're singing, believe it or not, is to remember the lyrics, even to songs you know well...you're so busy trying to hit the note right, put in the requisite emotion, make it sound right, and it's especially tough if you're playing an instrument at the same time...now add to that bright lights, big crowds and knowing you'll be televised to millions, most of whom can't sing or play and all of whom will jump on you if you're so much as a quarter step off...I rarely perform in public for this reason...music might look easy but believe me-it's TOUGH...I think that Susan's voice is not conditioned to repeated live performances, and she hasn't developed the mental resilience that those who started performing in small unknown venues and built up slowly to larger and larger venues developed over years of experience-this is the bane of overnight successes and is why she is having so many mental issues now...she hasn't developed the skillls to know how to handle this kind of incident as those who came up the long hard road did, and she's learning in front of millions now instead of in small clubs in early days where no one really hears what you're doing or cares. So cut her some slack–she's really VERY early in her singing career and has the misfortune to have to develop and learn in front of milliions who have higher expectations than they should at this point....

Susan DID recover! she sang the whole song and the show with it was a delayed broadcast on the west coast. you can see it on The View's net site. there's no stopping Susan!! actually it was a privilege to see the live take. it proves that Susan just keeps on going and there's more to come.

Unfortunately there are those out there ready to jump on any little mishap concerning this beautiful soul with the angelic voice. They are looking for any little tidbit they can proliferate into something sensationalistic. Surprised there weren't headline in some tabloid that she'd suffered a breakdown on live TV; as it is, there were hints of stress issues. I do hope that she isn't pushing herself too hard, though; this business is grueling, for sure.

I love Susan Boyle, and it wasn't her fault that she had a frog in her throat. She handled it well. She is so lovely.

Never mind, Susan...all that foggy smoke coming off the floor would choke me, too. You're the singer whose CD Albums we love to listen to and millions love you.'

Sing on, Susan! That part of the song chokes me up a bit every time. Thank you for being human and not lip-synching like a Barbie doll.

Proof Positive that even celebrities are human and thusly fumble their performances from time to time. Welcome to live TV. Better luck next time.

Please don't call her a 'celebrity' – that's no compliment. To me, she is a very nice lady who has a very talented singing voice, and I respect her ability and her real-ness. I'll take her over Britney anyday of the week.

Peter, she didn't tear up, so don't fret. She handled it very graciously and was laughing during the interview, and when she was given the second chance she performed beautifully – still no tears! Too bad she didn't have an opportunity to re-do the whole thing during the original performance, but we got to listen way to much about Joy's bra instead.

yes, that makes you a hater. Another negative person, that does not allow for people to make mistakes. Susan can captivate and audience by just being present on the stage and sing. Look at all the other "top" singers, and look at all the stage designs and light shows, they need to have to keep people watching.
Susan, Keep doing what you love, and enjoy yourself. We love to see the "Positive" vibes you bring to the world.

Bless your heart, Jesse Knight. What a miserable soul you must be. Probably "bah humbugging" it everywhere you go. Susan is a lovely lady who can do what I dare say you could NEVER try to do and that's perform in front of our nation and the world. So why don't you go pick up Jen from down the page a bit. I do believe you would make a lovely and nasty pair.

Are you completely nuts? What an awful thing to say .... One tiny problem and you say something like that.
She wouldn't be doing anyone a favor to stop singing .... she has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
Have you no class? No Manners? Or are you just an ignorant jerk?

I think your comment was the only negative- oh well. most of the time it's about 50/50, seems the positive comments and good outwin this time- Go Susan, you're amazing. I'm a singer too and i can tell you i always think about my voice cracking or hitting a bad note while performing, it can happen to anyone.
