On "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Monday, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman opened up to the daytime talk show host about their love for each other and Urban’s past struggles with substance abuse.
Country star Urban told Winfrey he was addicted to “everything,” from alcohol to cocaine, when Kidman staged a small intervention with a few close friends and family members several months after the couple married in 2006.
“You can’t [get clean] for somebody. I couldn’t do this just for her, but to see love in action, to that degree, in that time, in that way, I’d never experienced anything like that,” Urban said.
Urban entered rehab in October and has been clean ever since. His latest album, “Get Closer,” is a love letter to Kidman, and includes the hit “Put You In a Song,” which he sang on Winfrey's show yesterday.
“He’s got a way with words,” Kidman told Oprah. “But the thing that always touches me is he says, ‘Let me put it into action.’”
The fellow Aussies met at an awards dinner in Los Angeles in 2005. Shortly after meeting, Urban said he asked Kidman a strange question.
“I don’t know where this question came from but I said, ‘How’s your heart?’” he recalled. “She said ‘It’s open.’ It was not only beautiful because it said so much about her, but it instantly made me ask myself, ‘Is mine?’”
Urban said it wasn’t hard to stay clean this time, his third stay in rehab in 8 years - he just did everything differently and “surrendered” the outcome.
“[There] was a huge hole in my life that was going to be filled by the right thing eventually or it was always going to be filled by the wrong thing,” he said. “Ultimately for me, [the right thing is] love. … Nic has taught me so much and brought so much to my life and opened my eyes in so many ways.”
