"Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" star Jeremy Renner says he could replace superstar Tom Cruise in future editions of the spy thriller.
"It's a franchise to potentially take over," Renner, 39, tells MTV News. "I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea."
As Marquee previously reported, Cruise, 48, and Paramount studios had been seeking younger actors to join the "M:I" team to help breathe new life into the enterprise and take the helm. But whether or not Cruise will hand over the reins in "Ghost Protocol," Renner can't say.
"I can't really go into the details of the script, because that's still evolving," the "Hurt Locker" star said. "It's Tom's baby. He's the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we'll see."
The Oscar nominee was, however, more than happy to dish about Cruise – particularly his skills as a stuntman.
"He's crazy, that guy. It's unbelievable. He's fearless. He's great to watch," Renner said. "He inspires me to want to be better. I'm training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up."
