'Conan' beats 'Tonight' and 'Late Show' in ratingsAnd now, for the numbers Conan O'Brien, TBS (which is owned by the same company that owns CNN) and everyone else has been waiting for... The ratings from "Conan's" debut episode. During last night's bow on TBS, "Conan" pulled in 4.2 million viewers, many of whom are on the younger side of adulthood. The projected median age for last night's audience is 30, with 2.4 million viewers falling in the 18-34 age range. Meanwhile, O'Brien's old gig, "The Tonight Show," drew 3.5 million viewers, while "The Late Show with David Letterman" attracted 3.4 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter. If you're planning on tuning in again tonight, you'll catch O'Brien chatting with Tom Hanks and Jack McBrayer plus a musical performance from Soundgarden. |

It was able to beat Leno and Letterman on his debut and perhaps the opening week(s) because he's been absent for such a long time from late night TV. But after a while, his ratings will fall and Leno & Letterman will get better ratings than him because just like when he had the Tonight Show, he had great ratings at firs but he wasn't able to keep it up and he fell to Letterman. But the good thing for him, he won't be kicked out from TBS for that
for a cable late night host to beat a major network host is amazing.

I am so glad to have Conan back. Jay has sucked forever and Dave has sucked over the last 4 years. Conan is awesome. He doesn't pander to bland stupidity (NBC's calling card) and he isn't old and bitter like Letterman. Plus I have a semit lead in to Craig Ferguson.
CONAN SUCKS! He is absolutely one of the most un-funny persons on television.
Just because his ratings were spiked for his first night performance doesn't mean that he'll ever again be on top. And besides, he wasn't up directly against either Dave or Jay so all you teenagers and teenage wannabees who are fans of this terrible comedian. More people are still up at 11pm when he's on versus even a half hour later when Letterman and Leno do their thing.
Oh, and if he was that hot a person, why is he on cable? Answer? TBS is desperate for anything...
I am sorry to say that I have never liked Conan's humor. But I do like Leno and Letterman. At least when I watch them I don't change the channel. That is how I can tell if I like them or not. However, the Mexican comedians beat them all. Their comedy is sooo stupid that is funny. It is nice to understand 3 or 4 languages, that way if you don't like this one, you can change and choose the funniest.

If you don't think Conan is funny then you should watch Leno, since you are probably over 40 years old and think "jaywalking" is the funniest thing ever. Found both Jay and Conan funny on their own terms, but recently Jay has actually been more consistently funny.
Since about the mid 2000's, Conan had changed his comedy (probably in attempts to get others to like him). He started doing less skits and tried harder in his monologues (which have never been his forte). It got to the point where since about 2007 I hardly watched Late Night anymore.
I watched his first show on TBS, and.....meh. I was expecting more for all the hype – I mean seriously, except for the lil skit where he got shot 'Godfather' style by 'NBC' – what else was funny?
An interview with Seth Rogen? Lea Michele from Glee? Jack White? – that's it? Again, seems he's trying too hard to be an interviewer (which also is not his strong suit – comedic bits are).
And last night – Tom Hanks, really? I get it – Hanks popularized the term 'CoCo' but echh – he wasn't even promoting anything!
As a matter of fact, "Conan"s numbers already went down, and Jay beat him last night – That's right: his Rating's are already down.
Meanwhile, the real funnyman: George Lopez has been getting funnier and funnier. From his stand-up career, knows how to deliver a monologue, and from his work in TV and movies, knows how to do cheesy skits and comedy bits, not to mention he has had more interesting guests.
Make mine Leno, Lopez, and Ferguson! O'Brien...I'll watch once in a while, but not holding my breath for laughs.
Lopez is funnier than Conan, Leno, and Letterman combined!

Leno is the rich kid at school whose dad donated alot of money for a new football field so his son could be on the team. its sad and pathetic. but sad and pathetic people need someone to watch too.

Leno, Letterman and Conan – They offer a variety of humor. You can pick and choose who to watch. Everyone has their own favorites and types of humor they appreciate. Like any other program, watch what you like and skip the rest.
What I find funny (besides Conan's new show) is that Leno had a 3.6 million viewers on average (before Conan's show aired), when Conan had an average of 3.5 million viewers on NBC, before the talks started about him getting fired from NBC.
So, NBC paid Conan $45 million, lost a host and his fanbase just for extra 100K viewers – biggest fubar on TV history.
Sorry, I just don't see the "talent" in Conan OR the others. They are not that funny nor do they provide "useful" informaton.
As far as I'm concerned CO still sucks. His stuff isn't humor.

This is true – Craig does way more with so little. I've actually attended a taping of his show and came out an even bigger fan. He's constantly funny and breaking that fourth wall too!
While Conan did have his funny moments many years ago – his last 2 or so years of 'Late Night' along with his 'Tonight Show' run, he seemed lacking.

I used to love to watch Jay then follow it up with some CoCo (Conan was ALWAYS more funnier though). Then this whole Tonight Show crap happened--I can't stand Leno now. Great to see a class act like Conan back where he belongs. And it was awesome to see the masturbating bear again
Way to go Conan!!! It is a big deal that a Basic Cable Show beat out the network shows. Yeah, Conan's ratings will settle down, they always do. That's still quite an acheivment that a cable show beat out broadcast networks shows.
As for the other hosts, yeah Craig Ferguson is funny, a diamond flying underneath the radar. Kimmel is okay, he's finally coming into his own after 7 years.
The rest....well. Letterman was the innovator, but no longer. He just seems tired and is phoning it in. Fallon isn't cut out for late night. Too uncomfortable.
And Leno........unless you're a Tea Bagger, Sarah Palin fan or on Medicare, he's not funny. Period. A total Hack.
i'm too cheap to pay comcast more $ for TBS, but watching coco online is totally entertaining and well worth the wait!
Conan is just another case of "trying too hard". The guy isn't funny. Most of his viewers are young people who thinks anything is hilarious. Just give it a week and he will be back to third place in no time.
His debut show had me laughing at all the NBC Tonight Show jokes but he still isnt funny and i predict that aside from his core coco fan club he wont bring in any new viewers.

Why are so many of you forgetting that being on cable vs. NBC makes a huge difference. So even though it was just a debut, a cable show beating out a primetime network is a HUGE deal and shoes what kind of dedicated fans he has.

Ok...so on the *opening* night for his new show, he beat out Leno/Letterman regular ratings by a smallish margin. Not particularly unexpected. Why he has such a fan base at all, I'll never know. I'll take virtually any other late night show – barring perhaps Jimmy Fallon – over Conan, one of the least funny and most annoying personalities. "Coco"? No, thanks. Run along, ginger.

Welcome back Conan! I used to watch Leno and Conan and loved both shows, but since Leno took over the Tonight Show again, he doesn't seem as funny. He's not able to do things impromptu and everything seems so staged. Conan can react (and most of the time it's over-the-top) with such silliness that it's hilarious. Altho the late night shows compete, the advertisers will still be there if millions of people are watching, regardless of who's on top.
Leno is like Carson. The old folks and the Midwest like him because he is a nice drap interviewer. The great thing is Conan only needs to pull in a 1.5 rating to be considered a success on basic cable. Go CoCo. Leno can have his dream job back and die there like Carson did.

It's funny, which comedian you like should be a matter of personal taste and opinion, but after reading all the Conan-bashing, I think it's pretty obvious what the character of anti-Conan individuals are. The fact that he beat Leno and Letterman while on TBS is pretty amazing. I've always enjoyed Conan and plan on sticking with him for the long haul. Leno is a hack and Letterman has been past peak for about 25 years now.
I'd submit the Late Evening NEWS, Weather & Sports is more interesting, informative and humorous than Conan. TBS should replace him with Johnny Carson reruns.

It was his FIRST show. I don't know who is funnier, I don't stay up that late (unfortunately). But this shows what journalism is nowadays. You can't compare a pilot of a show that has as much controversy as it has had with other shows. Stupid.

Why do you idiot compare rating for programs that do not even come on TV at the same time???? Conan come on a half hour earlier than Leno and Letterman so how can you say who won that time slot when its NOT the same time slot??? You do the same idiotic thing with Jon Stewart when you put him up against Len and Letterman, he also comes on 30 mins earlier, so how can you compare them??? It totally depends on your timezone. Where I live Conan comes on at 8pm and Leno is at 10:30pm. I think it some markets both are at 11pm. It really seems to vary.
Conan who? In the old days when Conan was on after Leno, I tried to watch and enjoy Conan. That never happened for me. I was upset when he was moved into Leno's spot. Now that he's on a cable channel, I still don't care and will not watch Conan. Go Jay, you're the only late nighter for me.
Leno is NOT funny, and NBC is going to lose in the ratings to their superstar former host and eventually cancel "Tonight" before they realize they made a mistake. Maybe without Zucker's leadership it'll finally stick in their heads.
His show last night was mediocre at best. If he's planning to stay on the air, he better do a whole lot better than last night. I suggest getting some rubber chickens and using some of Henny Youngman's material - "Take my gay lover, please!"
Even as a Conan fan, you guys should stop saying how much worse Leno is doing since "stealing" the show, because, he stole the show in the first place from Letterman. Let's not forget Carson disowned of the show because of Leno.

I am 25 and HATE conan, I don't like him at all. I don't think he is funny and he is mean. The only good one left is Jimmy Fallon – he is awesome. Great comedic timing, funny and not mean spirited – he truly is a throw back.

I think Conan is a talented comedian but he is not a good talk show host. Remember he did have Leno's spot for 6 months and his rating kept on going down.

I'm in the forty something range and I get his humor but just don't think it's funny. It's like he's trying too hard to be funny (by any means necessary). I'm with the rest who say give him a few weeks and I doubt very seriously his ratings will stand at number one.
For all you Jay Leno groupies, his ratings are worse now that Conans ever were. The public is fed up with him. He went behind Lettermans back to screw him out of the Tonight Show, then he pushed Conan out. Letterman is number 1 in the 11:30 timeslot, and he's been number 1 almost the whole time Leno has been back. Conan is a comedic genius, and if he would've had a decent lead in, instead of the bomb that was The Jay Leno Show, he would've had good numbers at 11:30. Conan, George Lopez, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and the rest of the basic cable latenight hosts are the future of the medium.
Well hopefully in the future, they all get kicked off of their own shows, and we never have to hear from those clowns again. None of the people listed in your post are funny. I put up with Leno and Letterman, but that's it. The rest are a waste of a TV timeslot.

Letterman is definitely funny at times. Leno on the other hand is not even remotely funny. Any laughs he gets are a result of the applause and laugh sign posted in front of the audience. Conan is a legitimate riot.
Last nights premiere was boring. V disappointing. I'd rather see Bill Maher every night. But he's too smart for that. I love you, bill!

meh, who cares about ratings. obviously studios and actors do as it determines the money, but from the viewers perspective, ratings are a poor poor poor indicator of a show's quality. Even if Leno resumes trouncing Conan in the ratings, that doesn't make Leno's show "better", it just confirms that on the whole people are simple and are more likely to tune into shows that demand less thought and cater more to the masses. It's a sad but true realty. Other examples of better written, better acted, wittier, funnier, more nuanced programs that routinely get beat by simpler, low-brow, mass-consumption programs in the same time-slot: 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights; Mad Men; Community, Parks & Recreation, The West Wing, Firefly, etc. etc.

If you think he's funny, watch the show – if you think Leno's funny, watch HIS show...i mean, you really think YOUR comedic preferences are the only valid ones in existence? Don't forget that TBS is a basic cable channel, which makes these ratings all the more impressive. Maybe he won't be able to sustain them over time, but it is a great start for his new show.
I think all of them are funny in their own way and each one attracts people with differing senses of humor. I like Leno the least, conan and letterman about the same and Stewart the best

Conan is not funny. After a couple of weeks of the same old schtick, his ratings will be much lower. He is not a good interviewer either. He is constantly interupting his guests and trying to complete their sentences with bad jokes instead of listening to what they have to say.

Personally, I think Jack Parr beats them all. Certainly better than Carson. I quit watching TV twenty years ago, so I don't know much about these young kids though.

Leno is really bad! I'm sorry, I just don't see what is funny about him, funny looking–maybe. Dave is alright...though a little creepy, however, he's in NY, which makes a difference! Conan needs to come back to NY. Btw, CoCo nickname is really lame and kind of gay.

Love Conan – have watched him every night since he started in 1991. However – His spastic antics are wearing very thin. He is genuinely funny but needs to relax and just be himself. That is why he lost the Tonight Show. He needs to hire to me to be in the audience every night. He will wear a shock collar and every time he starts into his nervous tics such as the string dance or his nerd schtick I will push the shock button. I think in very short order I can make him much more attractive to a wider audience. I coud have saved the Tonight Show for him as well. It's a shame because he knows what is funny – mainly hiring the right writers.

Well of course his first show had high ratings....it did when he was on the Tonight show also. Give it a few weeks and the ratings will drop just like they did before. He's such an idiot. I'm not an older person, but even though I'm young, I like comedians who actually make me laugh and Conan definitely doesn't fulfull that requirement.

Yeah almost a million viewers is definitely "barely." Don't be in denial that there's solid proof of how badly Leno sucks now.
So Conan beat Leno at Leno's own gig when Conan's Tonight Show received better ratings that Leno is getting now...AND Conan is beating Leno on a completely different, cable network. Leno and Letterman are dinosaurs. Conan will be relevant for several more decades, not just a few more years.

Also important to note, Conan's Tonight Show ratings were higher than Leno's are since stealing the show back.

And Jay is how old? How many more years can he keep doing the show? He admitted that he may pull 10 more, tops. And who will they find to replace him? No one in their right freaking minds would take over the flagship after he's gone without constantly looking over their shoulder wondering when they will be sac'ed. Jay's days are numbered.
1st show ratings are meaningless. Wait 2-3 weeks to see where the ratings are before knowing if he will beat Leno/Letterman nightly.
What really matters is, well, I don't care. He can perform at a .6 Nielsen and TBS will not kick him to the curb and I'll still be watching him while all the Leno fans are demanding how unfunny Coco is and scratching their heads trying to figure out why he's still on TV. The joke, is really on you.

I'm old too (65) and I've always Conan's humor was hilarious. The sad thing is how people have to generalize about everything.....if you're over a certain age, then you must think "this" about something and "that" about something else. Sorry, but that's not always the case. Some people, no matter WHAT their age, are fully capable of thinking for themselves..... well, maybe not Republicans.

There's a reason his show didn't get the ratings the first time around...the whole late night talk show format is dull...no one really cares about celebrity interviews...his sketch off the top and dueling axes with Jack White were killer...Seth Rogen wasn't doing it for me so I flipped channels...the next interview (hot girl from some hit show I'll probably never watch) was hot, but TV is saturated with hotties now...Conan (i don't call him Coco) has to stick with the fast-paced, filmed sketches the way Demitri Martin does in his show, which are hilarious. His guests can participate..new ones for different skits, make it worth their while, instead of having them just 'drop in' for a quick plug en route to the Today Show. Conan knows that sense of humour (the absurd, yet smart) very well..he's a progenitor. Its non-topical, and makes you think. And Masturbating Bear?..c'mon...put that thing away..clean slate, Coc...I mean..Conan..

Conan will do well for the first week, then the younger kids will (20 – 29) will get antsy, bored and thirsty and will go back to the corner bar. Conan's humor is completely too childish for anyone over 30 and JAY will go back to being the king. Mark my words!!!

Most people are just watching the show because it is "sort of" new but once it wear off people will go back to watching the "other" late night shows. If I could watch a late night show it would be Jon Stewart, he is the BEST.

I am 51 and always enjoy Conan and his general silliness. The problem with watching his show is that it is on too late for me to enjoy. I am in healthcare and the day starts early so have to hit the hay early.
