One thing "Modern Family" is so great about capturing are those little moments we can all relate to. I have to say, I've felt Phil's frustration on Wednesday night's episode at trying to figure out which smoke detector was beeping around the house on many occasions.
When he finally lost it and attacked the smoke detectors with the "business end" of his old college cheerleading baton (complete with Schwarzenegger-esque one-liners), I'm sure a lot of people have been tempted to do the same (especially in the middle of the night).
Meanwhile, in the Dunphy house, both Claire and Haley spent some time together, sick in bed. Claire took the opportunity to finally confront Haley about her boyfriend, Dylan (who responded to Phil's warning not to get close to the sick Claire with, "Haley told you about that? It's just a dream!").
In true "Modern Family" fashion, Haley confused Claire's metaphorical talk about making the right choice in a guy for a discussion about her parents' marriage – so fear not, fans of dimbulb Dylan, he will be back!
Jay, meanwhile, was invited by the anniversary-obsessed Gloria (she even celebrates first fights!) to a re-creation of their first date - a date he has completely forgotten, of course.
At the same time, Manny - this week's MVP - was fuming about Jay's decision to fire an employee who allowed Manny to drive a forklift, crashing it into a wall. Manny wanted to hire Mitchell to represent the worker in court, but Jay nixed that, leading Manny to give him the permanent cold shoulder. Jay was able to outsmart him by immediately saying "Knock, knock" (kids can't resist saying "Who's there"? after all).
While all this is happening, Cam tried to give Lily her big break in a commercial (after getting off the phone, Mitchell asked, "Cam, did you just sell our baby"?). Mitchell was having none of that but Cam went behind his back. When Mitchell confronted him on the set ("I walked on, it's not MGM, it's a warehouse behind a mattress store"), Cam realized that Lily was hired because she's Asian and the commercial was promoting stereotypes. After Cam confronted the producers about that, he promptly walked off the set - with the wrong baby.
