Can I just write the word “amazing” over and over to describe Tuesday night’s “Rocky Horror” episode of "Glee" and be done with this recap?
The show was incredible from the opening credits, rendered with the big red lips and the script done a la “Rocky Horror,” to the final moments with their version of “The Time Warp." To put it simply: I loved, loved, loved it!
The show’s story line gave us the opportunity to see more depth in the characters of both Will Schuester and Finn. I knew Will really cared for Emma, but I didn’t realize how much until I watched him desperately try and pull together a high school version of the risqué movie just to impress and be close to her.
Meanwhile, who knew Finn was so self conscious about his bod? I loved the chat in the locker room where Artie explained that Internet porn is the reason why men are pressured to look good since it’s allowed for the objectification of guys. Hilarious!!
The musical numbers were all top-notch and infused with that sense of whimsical fun so present at a live showing of “Rocky Horror.” But a big shout out goes to Mercedes for her version of "Sweet Transvestite."
I wasn’t sure if I was going to go for a female as Frank-N-Furter, but it was nothing short of spectacular. She was all attitude stalking across that stage in her boots and bustier. Brava for you girlfriend!
So what did you think? Did Tuesday night’s “Glee” live up to the hype?
Having seen Rocky Horror in college and in the village where they did a floor show, I'm sorry. It sucked. It was great to hear the songs again. I'm glad that they get into Rocky Horror but they butchered chunks of it badly. Their "Time Warp" had no DRIVE (PUMP THOSE HIPS). No one will replace Tim Curry as Frankenfurter and the rest of the cast simply did not have the "pop". I guess thanks for trying but these were bigger shows than I think they realized they had to fill and I'm sorry but young Susan Sarandon was HOT in her undies. I think she still shudders if someone calls her "Janet".
What's next "LIttle Shop of Horrors"?
Even though I have seen exactly 1 and 1/2 episodes of Glee, I thought I would chime in. I gave the show exactly 1 episode (the pilot) and decided it wasn't for me. My wife watches and loves it. But after seeing 1/2 of the Rocky Horror episode, I have decided that Glee is the absolute worst show on television. All the songs are obviously lip synched, the acting is over the top and atrocious, and the teen actors are obviously playing much younger and dumber characters. And Jane Lynch, while a very serviceable comic character actress, is playing a parody of herself. Maybe that passes as a good show somewhere in this world, but it shouldn't. It is horrible. Sure, I'm a 40 year old male and its not in my demographic, but I truly believe that this is at the bottom spectrum of television programming.
Some good stuff...some bad. I realize that it's an homage and not supposed to be a copy, but whats up with the wrong characters singing parts of the songs..... and whats up with TWO Columbias and TWO Magentas???
As Will stated, there weren't enough girl roles to go around so they had to double-up some of the roles.
I personally really enjoyed the episode. I'm not familiar with Rocky Horror at all so I didn't have anything to compare Glee's version of the musical. I think that helped a lot because it seems like a lot of people are unhappy that Glee changed the lyrics or had different people cast in certain roles (like Mercedes playing Frank-N-Furter). I just took the episode at face value – Will getting his kids to do Rocky Horror in hopes of getting closer to Emma. It worked because there was a plot to the episode. The episode had some funny moments and even some of the outcast/self-doubt-ness that has been missing since the pilot episode.
As a tribute epsiode, it fared much better than the other tribute episodes (like the Britney Spears or Lady Gaga). Those episodes were pretty bad because the storylines were flimsy.
After watching this episode, I wouldn't mind if Glee tackled different musicals with the same format (i.e., Glee club rehearsing for a performance) – and I don't even like musicals!
The line of the night was when Sam said he was worrried about " showing some nuttage" Good one
Overall I thought it was a pretty decent show.. all these shows pay homage to the songs and singers.. its not supposed to to just be them singing the exact versions... im not sure what people expect who criticize it.
I think John Stamos is sort of out of his element though
Here's my fourth attempt at criticism...the last few shows have been real let downs. The writers seem to have taken the show away from its focus on these kids as being misfits and are stuck instead on their hormones. Hey, whatever sells, right? Just sad, and the criticism is growing.
Okay, I've tried thrice to offer my criticism, but none of my comments have been posted. So, our comments are not pre-screened?!
Are you suggesting that most of the original cast is dead? Because Frank-N-Futer, Janet, Brad, Eric... those actors are all still alive and cannot therefore, roll in their graves. Also, Brad and Eric's actors even had cameoes in the episode! I would assume they were fine with Glee's reinterpretation if they were willing to appear in the show.
Eric? You mean Eddie? Yes, it was great seeing Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf Aday (yes, that's his last name) with cameos as conservative station managers. and I loved Sue Sylvester telling Stamos the exact thing I said mere seconds earlier. "Hey! That's an Eddie song. You need to sing a Frank N Furter song."
Robert...I would be curious to hear you sing if you think these guys can't. Then again, maybe your just tone deaf!
I've never watched 'Glee' before last night, but I've been a Rocky Horror fan since the 80's, so I thought I'd check it out. The musical numbers were good, but the rest of the show was flat and unfunny. I literally did not laugh once during the entire show (except at one amusing commercial). I'm not sure what people see in this show.
Big Glee fan. Last nights show? One of the 5 worst. When did Schuester become such a wimp? John Stamos' bit was campy and horrid. It was kind of painful to watch.
The 'disneyfication', as Robert calls it, is what exposes the next generation to older music. Odds are few kids in high school are familiar with Queen, Billy Joel and Journey. It's putting all that great art into a medium that introduces it to the mainstream again. Plus, the show is FUNNY! Even without Sue Sylvester's infamous lines, the writing is incredibly witty. The show makes being a dorky choir member cool, which in turn encourages kids to join music programs at school, which in turn helps kids concentrate on other intellectual subjects in school. So I really don't see what is so bad or wrong with 'disneyfication'.
I'm so sad I was not able to watch it last night. My TV service is Cablevision and they still are not airing Fox 5. I'll have to catch it on the rerun. I tired downlaoding it last night but it wouldn't work :(
I LOVED it!! I've seen RHPS at least 200 times in the theater and the play a handful of times and Glee got it right. I wasn't sure about a female Frank either, but she rocked it! Don't dream it, be it!
Wow, I am shocked at the negative comments!!!! LAST NIGHT WAS FANTASTIC!!! I saw the RHPS 38 times back in the 70's, and yes I am die hard fan..I couldn't stop smiling and singing throughout the whole spectacular show!!!!!! Thank you Glee for Rocking my Tuesday like you always do!!
I loved Mercedes as Frank-N-Furter. She totally rocked that song. Loved the whole show!!!
The show just continues to go down hill. While a lot of people loved last nights show... I'm sure I won't be the only one who says that I've had enough... done!
It was plain awful, just bad bad bad...I can't believe this blogger is serious...it was all that is wrong with Glee- had real Rocky Horror performers rolling in thier graves. It's the disneyfication of all real art- and that is all of Glee not just this episode...what I thought would be a show right up my alley turned quickly into a nightmare where these average singers (and some are not even Average, the lead guy couldn't sing his way out of a wet paper bag- just plain bad- how he ever got cast in a singing show is amazing) ruin all the songs I used to love in the past. Luckily more and more people are realizing what a crap fest this show really is. If it wasn't for Sue, this show would have tanked the first season. Thank God for Jane Lynch, and some career advise Jane, get away from this as soon as possible, you are so much better than GLee.
Are you implying that all of the original cast are wonderful singers? Not even close. I cringe when I hear Susan Sarandon singing.
To say the Glee Singers are average is really off base...and yeah Rocky Horror is a cult movie but to compare it to Art lol please
I am a huge Rocky Horror fan and I love Glee. I think they did a great job. I was nervous when I heard the lyric changes and learned that FrankNFurter was going to be female, but they tied those changes into the story and it made perfect sense. I would have been far more perplexed if they writers had somehow written the episode to be completely accepting of the elements in Rocky Horror because it would be considered inappropriate subject matter for a high school production, especially a school in a small town in Ohio like the show takes place. I think any fans of RHPS that were not Glee fans and tuned in just for the RHPS set themselves up for diasppointment - if you want and expect 100% accuracy and reproduction, stick to watching the original movie.
It sucked, the episode was HORRIBLE!
Oh, and the writing of this blog, no offense, is REALLY awful!
I was disappointed with the show. I have seen Rocky Horror many times and although I enjoy Glee they did not do it justice. Hated a female version of Frank – N -Furter and the lyric changes made it worse. I was very disappointed.
Absolutely loved it!! Kurt was awesome! loved it! Not sure I liked Mercedes as Frank-N-Furter... but I guess it worked.
Agree – Kurt was great. Did not like the female Frank-N-Furter AT ALL!
It was amazing!!
P.S. DR, changing the lyrics was part of the story, not to make it "suitable for prime-time".
@DR since your a first time watcher of the show i dont think u truely understand what the go for in the show...bare in mind that this is a highschool glee club even if it is ficticous they have to make it some what real in that since...that alone hinders them from using some of the material in that movie....all that being said i did miss the episode and cant wait for the replay on fancast
Glee was a pleasent surprise last night. I went in expecting a mediocre showing following the announcement of the changes from the original Movie but boy am I glad I got it wrong! The show was great and the performances were top notch. I especially enjoyed the character development present in this episode. While Rachel can be a tad annoying, her convo with Finn about his physical insecurities was both sweet and endearing. The guy talking about body opinions in the locker room was classic and Mercedes as Frank-N-Furter further prove that Glee is great television. It was a pleasure to watch!
It's the first time I watched Glee because I love Rocky Horror Picture Show. It will be the last time too. Putting a girl as Frank-N-Furter was awful and the lyric changes to make it suitable for prime-time somewhat ruined the songs. It just didn't work.
Last nights show was awesome. People will not like it because they are not familiar with the original, it's that simple.
Wrong. I've seen the original plenty of times and love it. I also love Glee. However, last nights episode was just average.
I was sooooo pleased with last night's show! It was absolute perfection!
Luv-luv-luv!!! The writers of Glee never disappoint!!!! The cast always delivers....and that's how Sue 'C's it!
LOVED IT!!!!! I have always been a huge Rocky Horror fan and this was a great homage to the classic movie. Mercedes was so amazing! I really love that the show is branching out with all of the actors more and that they are all getting more spotlight. And wowzer with Emma's performance too! I love this show!!!!!!!!
