We always knew Matthew McConaughey had a bit of crazy in him – after all he was arrested in 1999 for reportedly disturbing the peace by playing bongo drums… naked. But his latest venture into the music industry has us g-ape-ing.
McConaughey directs and stars in country singer Jamey Johnson’s new music video, “Playing the Part.” In the seven minute clip, the actor leads us through the streets of Los Angeles dressed in a gorilla costume.
The song is from Johnson’s new album, "The Guitar Song," which released in September. Johnson and McConaughey are good friends – the singer performed at McConaughey’s 40th birthday party – and Johnson asked the actor if he’d want to help him with the video.
"I called him up at 3 in the morning with a wild-ass idea," McConaughey told People. "I talked about it, then said, 'And then the gorilla's drinkin' Mad Dog!' And all I heard was him laughing."
Johnson's deadpan response: "Why wouldn't you want to do that?"
Our favorite part is when McConaughey starts breaking it down on the tiny stage of a country bar with Johnson and his band in the background. As the GAC blog noted, it’s clear there was some serious “monkey business” going on during filming.
We’re out of bad puns, so just watch the video for yourself.
