Right on the heels of the announcement that David Arquette and wife Courteney Cox are in the midst of a trial separation after 11 years of marriage, Arquette decided to call in to Howard Stern’s radio show to reveal his side of what happened in their relationship.
“Listen, we’re best friends,” Arquette, 39, told Stern of Cox, 46. “She’s the greatest woman I’ve ever met. I’m not the one who called this separation.”
Arquette went on to explain that Cox gave him a motorcycle after their 11th wedding anniversary and told him, “I don’t want to be your mother anymore.”
When the couple headed to Ann Arbor, Michigan to film “Scream 4,” Arquette said he was feeling “distance” from Cox.
“We’re shooting 'Scream 4' in Ann Arbor, Michigan...one of the biggest college towns and there’s all these kids around that are in like their 20’s," Arquette recalled. "I say to her, ‘Well if you’re not my mother anymore, I’m just going to [expletive] be myself. I’m going to be myself.’"
He said he did "go a little crazy," but "not in a bad way" and he didn't have sex with anyone. "I just like, went out and I was myself."
Although Arquette might have been more of “himself” while in Ann Arbor, he was also adamant that he wasn’t unfaithful to Cox during their marriage.
“Listen, I spent eleven years of my marriage [being] the most faithful man in the whole [expletive] world. You can never even imagine,” he told Stern. “I was a [expletive] champion. I’m legendary.”
And as for that rumor that Arquette has acquired a girlfriend, he gives a firm “bull[expletive],” although he has slept with a young lady once, “maybe twice,” he told Stern.
And, Arquette added, just because they've separated doesn’t mean they’ve lost all civility towards each other.
“We co-exist still,” Arquette said. “We have a child. We spend time together with Coco. I stay at the house sometimes, our house...we switch around.”
Arquette said that he and Cox told Coco, 6, about their separation before it went public. “We went to the beach and had a picnic, and sat her down and explained to her that we’re grown-ups. And a lot of the time when grown-ups are growing up they need to figure out their lives....sometimes that takes each other having a little space.”
When Coco asked if they were getting a divorce, he told her, “no, we’re not getting a divorce, we’re just taking some time apart to get to know ourselves better and get to know what we want out of our mate better.”
