The “Dancing with the Stars” cameras were focused on Derek Hough and Jennifer Grey Monday night when audible jeers erupted from the audience, leaving some viewers to wonder if the negative reaction was because of Sarah Palin’s appearance on the show.
Co-host Brooke Burke was chatting with Hough and Grey when the disruption started, causing Hough to turn around to look for its source as Burke told the audience, “There’s booing in the ballroom; we don’t know why.” Grey even asked, “Why is there booing?” before the camera cut to Sarah Palin sitting next to Tom Bergeron.
Once Bergeron picked up the interview, Palin was all smiles and the audience behind her seemed calm and collected. She told Bergeron that the experience “is amazing, it’s so exciting, and it’s great to see all of this courage and joy and exuberance,” adding that she was there to root for “Bristol the pistol.”
But it seems like the boos could've been in reaction to Grey’s low score; People reports that the audience may have hoped to see at least a nine instead of a score of consecutive eight's from the judges.
Update 12:25 p.m.: Bergeron backed up reports that it was the scores for Grey's performance and not Sarah Palin's presence that outraged the audience when the "DWTS" host sat down with Jimmy Kimmel. "They felt that Jennifer got screwed, that she should've gotten nines," he explained. The audience is "hammered half the time," anyway, so take their actions with a grain of salt, we suppose.
