Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

Alice Cooper, the Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi and LL Cool J were some of the big nominees announced this morning for induction into the 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The full list heralds other music stars like Chic, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John, J.Geils Band, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits and Chuck Willis.

Cooper was thrilled with his nomination and told CNN, "We are honored to be nominated for induction in to the Hall. Anytime you are nominated in your chosen profession, it's definitely a compliment to be recognized."

According to Hall of Fame President and CEO Joel Peresman, the ballots are on their way to more than 500 voters. Peresman says, “We believe our nominating committee has put forth a list of artists that truly represent the wide variety of music that defines rock and roll.”

This year’s inductees will be announced in December and the 26th Annual Induction Ceremony will take place on March 14, 2011.

Did your favorite artist make the cut or did they join the list of the Hall of Fame's most shocking snubs? We're looking at you, Rush fans!

  1. It's about time

It's shameful that Linda Ronstadt is not already inducted in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. Worse that she has not been nominated. She should be on the top of the list for the next inductees. And what about Stevie Nicks (solo), Heart, Joan Jett and Pat Benatar. They aren't in, either.

Thanks , I've recently been looking for information about this topic for a long time and yours is the best I've discovered till now. But, what concerning the bottom line? Are you sure about the supply?|What i do not realize is in reality how you're now not really much more neatly-liked than you might be right now. You're very intelligent.

    To Vince

The difference between the replacement singers in Journey (Steve Augeri for Steve Perry) and Styx (Lawrence Gowan for Dennis DeYoung)and the replacement singer in Chicago (Jason Scheff for Peter Cetera), is that the replacement singers in Journey and Styx arrived very, very, very late into the game, the late 1990s and early 2000s to be exact and they never had any hits with those singers played on the radio. Augeri and Gowan will not be inducted, and they shouldn't be inducted.

Jason Scheff on the other hand has been with Chicago since 1985 (25 years) and he has written 19 songs for the band's last 7 studio albums and there is more to come. Jason Scheff sang lead on two Top 5 Chicago hits: Will You Still Love Me? (1986) and What Kind Of Man Would I Be? (1989). Songs that are still heavily played on radio. It would look very odd if the replacement for Peter Cetera was not inducted into the Rock Hall with the rest of Chicago. He's a big part of the story.

The appropriate comparison would be Jason Scheff to Sammy Hagar. Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen in 1985, the same year that Jason Scheff replaced Peter Cetera in Chicago. Sammy Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Van Halen. Jason Scheff will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Chicago.

The Rock Hall inducted 12 members of The Grateful Dead and 16 members of Parliament-Funkadelic. I'm pretty sure they can handle 10 or 12 members of Chicago.

@Todd – Please stop your hateful trolling. To classify RUSH or their fans as D&D demonstrates your lack of knowledge of the band's music or their fans. So, instead of surfing around for things to be hateful towards, I suggest you go find a band you do like and talk nice about them. You might find more positive attention that way.

    A CHICAGO CONSPIRACY THEORY

FIRST, BARACK OBAMA, A BLACK CHICAGO POLITICIAN FROM HAWAII, BORN IN 1961, IS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN 2008. THEN WITH THE HELP OF BARACK OBAMA, THE CITY OF CHICAGO GOT IN THE BIDDING FOR HOSTING THE 2016 OLYMPICS AND THEY LOST. THEN IN 2010 THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE’S CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS WIN THEIR FOURTH STANLEY CUP IN FRANCHISE HISTORY, BUT THEIR FIRST SINCE 1961, THE YEAR OF BARACK OBAMA’S BIRTH. THEN PETER CETERA GAVE THE SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPEECH FOR DAVID FOSTER IN 2010. THEN CHICAGO THE BAND IS INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME SOMETIME DURING BARACK OBAMA’S EIGHT YEARS/TWO TERMS AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (2008-2017).

BARACK OBAMA IS BLACK AND HE IS FROM CHICAGO. THE CHICAGO NHL TEAM IS CALLED THE BLACKHAWKS. CHICAGO THE BAND PLAYS THE MUSIC OF BLACK PEOPLE.

IN 2010, DUSTIN BYFUGLIEN (PRONOUNCED BUFFLIN) BECAME THE FIRST BLACK GOAL SCORER AND FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN IN NHL HISTORY TO WIN THE STANLEY CUP AND HE DID IT DURING A BARACK OBAMA PRESIDENCY. GRANT FUHR WAS THE FIRST BLACK GOALTENDER AND FIRST BLACK HOCKEY PLAYER PERIOD TO WIN THE STANLEY CUP AND HE DID IT FIVE TIMES WITH THE EDMONTON OILERS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1990, BUT GRANT FUHR WAS CANADIAN. WAYNE GRETZKY, WHO WAS GRANT FUHR’S TEAMMATE ON THE EDMONTON OILERS, WAS BORN IN 1961, THE SAME YEAR AS BARACK OBAMA, AND WHEN WAYNE GRETZKY RETIRED IN 1999 HE HELD 61 NHL RECORDS. JOHN F. KENNEDY WAS ASSASSINATED IN 1963. WAYNE GRETZKY WORE THE NUMBER 99 ON HIS JERSEY. WHEN WAYNE GRETZKY RETIRED IN 1999 HE HAD 1,963 CAREER ASSISTS IN REGULAR SEASON NHL PLAY. JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. DIED IN A PLANE CRASH IN 1999, THE SAME YEAR THAT WAYNE GRETZKY RETIRED WITH 1,963 CAREER ASSISTS IN REGULAR SEASON NHL PLAY, THE SAME NUMBER AS THE YEAR OF JOHN F. KENNEDY’S ASSASSINATION. JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. DIED ON JULY 16, 1999, ONE DAY BEFORE THE ELEVEN YEAR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF WAYNE GRETZKY AND JANET JONES.

The Chicago Blackhawks have won the Stanley Cup during a Barack Obama presidency, and now Chicago the band will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame sometime between 2011 and 2017!!

Singer-Songwriter and Pianist Elton John and his songwriting partner, Lyricist Bernie Taupin, were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, but only Elton John was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. This does not make any sense whatsoever. If there had not been a Bernie Taupin, there would not have been an Elton John and vice versa. Their music was a collaborative effort. Bernie Taupin should have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame back in 1994 as a Lyricist in the Non-Performers category, the same year that Elton John was inducted in the performers category.

Bernie Taupin didn’t just write lyrics exclusively for Elton John. Bernie Taupin also wrote the lyrics for songs recorded by Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Kiki Dee, Cher, Alice Cooper, Robert Palmer, Melissa Manchester, Rick Derringer, The Hudson Brothers, Olivia Newton John, The Motels, Starship, Heart, Animotion, Stray Cats, John Waite, Martin Page, Peter Cetera, Bryan Ferry, Tammy Wynette, Little Richard, Marianne Faithful, Courtney Love, John Anderson, Willie Nelson, Teddy Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, Toby Keith, Brian Wilson, and Leon Russell, as well as for his own singing career, both as a solo artist and as a member of his own late-1990s Country-Western band, The Farm Dogs.

Bernie Taupin’s biggest success outside from his work with Elton John was the 1978 album, From the Inside by Alice Cooper, which included ten songs with lyrics by Bernie Taupin and music by Alice Cooper, Dick Wagner, Steve Lukather, Bruce Roberts and David Foster. From the Inside spawned the Top 20 hit, How You Gonna See Me Now. In 1985, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to two songs that would go on to hit number one on the Billboard 100 Singles Chart: We Built This City by Starship, and These Dreams by Heart, both with music written by Martin Page. Earlier on in 1974, Ringo Starr scored a Top 5 hit with Snookeroo, a song written for him by Bernie Taupin and Elton John.

Bernie Taupin and Elton John comprise one of the longest running and most successful songwriting teams of all time. Bernie Taupin’s 40 years of collaborative work with Elton John alone should qualify him for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Please induct Lyricist Bernie Taupin into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in the Non-Performers category. His induction is long overdue.

Yeah well...Howard says it best. Personally I am going to boycott the so called hall of fame and never will go there or support it due to the truly influential artists they deny. How many shows were cancelled this summer because of lack of ticket sales...for so many groups. How many venues are filled to sell out or near sell out proportions this ummer? By "old" guys? And about Tom Sawyer...if only you had the PRIVELEGE to see Alex and how he performs this song TODAY, I would give you my next pay check if that wouldn't change your mind. Enuf said.

Say what you will, but Linda Ronstadt deserved to be in the R&RHOF 19 years ago (her first year of eligibility) and ever since. She was THE #1 female rock artist and biggest solo female concert draw of the 70s and is STILL recording and touring. Her multiple Grammy's in multiple genres that include, Rock, Pop, Traditional, Country, Mexican, etc. further cement her versatility. Wake up, HOF voters! You are inducting a group who sang "Freak out, le freak, say chic" and "Good Times" before a woman who has sung her heart out with intelligent lyrics and a set of pipes envied by most vocalists for more than 40 years? Come on!

I know I am dating myself but rock music had two monster groups in the late 60's and early 70's that continually get snubbed:

    MOODY BLUES
    JETHRO TULL

They were my favorites for years, sold millions of records, packed arenas. Now that the R&R HOF is selecting way down below the pantheon of "mega stars" (Alice Cooper?), how do these bands keep getting ignored?

Ever heard of Def Jam? Engineers of rap music based on exposure of the beasties. Just because you hate mainstream music doesn't make rush better than Bon Jovi, llcoolj or the beastie boys. Where rush only touches a small population of parent's basement dwelling Canadian glue sniffers, the aforementioned acts have had a worldwide effect on not only music, but culture as well.

A SIN and ashame that so many 1960's mega stars continue to be side swiped. One example is Neil Sedeka, who had 30 charted hits per the Billboard top pop singles book 1955-2002. This does not even include other songs he has written, or songs he was a part of. Way too much focus on more recent groups, that should spend their time in the penalty box, when great artists and lyrics were being made before so many of these newer groups were even born.
This is why I have not, and will not visit this mockery of what is called a 'Hall of Fame'. Baby Boomer Bill, age 63.

Beastie Boys introduced rap music to the white mainstream and made it accessible to the masses. Even if you hate rap, you have to acknowledge their widespread influence on the overall music scene not to mention arts and politics. Don't think they are musicians? You haven't listened. Much more influence on music than the likes of Rush.

Ignoring Rush by not even placing them on the list of nominees is beyond comprehension. You would think someone might have noticed when James Hetfield namechecked them, but no. You could just look at all of the modern bands who credit Rush as being critical to their development, and that alone would make a good case, without seeing them in concert and staring in awe at the wonder that is Rush. But, even beyond the inexplicable omission of Rush, one has to look at KISS (paved the way for hair metal), Yes and Jethro Tull (masters of progressive composition, turned rock music into an art form), Chicago (progressive composition, innovators in the use of horn sections), Deep Purple (innovated heavy metal, made one of the most important live albums of the '70s). WHAT THE HELL is J. Geils Band doing on this list???? Who in the heck is Joe Tex???? Even if one ignores Rush, how does Bon Jovi (pop metal at best, more like hard rock) get nominated over KISS, or even bands like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden?

    September 29, 2010 at 7:16 am | Report abuse |
    • Bedul

The influence that bands like Rush, Iron Maiden, Yes, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Deep Purple (and the list goes on and on) have had over hundreds of other bands, without them, many bands that exist today wouldn't have released a single record possibly. But I don't expect them to be inducted anymore, after having inducted bands like ABBA (!?) they don't deserve being in there, they deserve something way better.
I think they should create a real Hall of Fame.

Being a fan of KISS for many years, I am disappointed that these guys aren't in...
However, You have to take in to consideration that as Kiss' popularity faded in the early 80's BonJovi began to SOAR!!!
They sold out show after show and are still doing so now. I was never a HUGE fan of BonJovi but they did their thing and my hat is off to them.

Tyler!!!! When you say RUSH is God awful, what do you mean by that? They suck because they're 3rd ALL TIME IN MUSIC HISTORY for consecutive gold and platinum records(behind the rolling stones and the beatles). They suck because Neil Peart is the greatest Rock and Roll Drummer of ALL TIME. VOTED BY DRUMMERS. Maybe they suck because Geddy Lee's bass playing has influenced HUNDREDS of current Bass players? Maybe they suck because they're outselling KISS on this current tour? Do they suck when Gene Simmons says that is a disgrace that RUSH is not in the Hall of Fame? I could go on and on..... so get you facts straight before you run your ignorant mouth about a band you know nothing about. When you've listen to every song RUSH has done, analyzed their lyrics and seen them in concert... then formulate an opinion. IDIOT!

Anyone who says Rush sucks just shows they know very little about music, or are too young to know the bands legacy. Probably the most talented R&R band ever, both lyrically n technically.

I understand why Kiss fans can be upset about being snubbed but really? Heart and Rush?? They both suck, they are god awful. That's probably why they haven't been nominated. I love the Beastie Boys but Tom Waits deserves it more than they do. Maybe both will make the cut. Oh and yes the Cure should probably be nominated too. They are a huge influence in a lot of different types of music.

r&r hall of fame isn't only for "rock & roll." it represents artist who have paved their own path in whatever genre of music they may produce(d). soon enough you're going to have acts like sons of leon, possibily fall out boy of course beyonce, and the list goes on, being nominated. soooo keep waiting, kiss will soon be nominated. :)

rush is one of the greatest bands of all time! Most underated band! i like the beasties but its rap crap! not rock and roll! they should have a seperate hall of fame for that stuff! all they do is sample and steal other music!

      September 29, 2010 at 8:15 pm | Report abuse |

Rush is one of best bands of ALL time, with virtuosos on each of their instruments. They do not make music for D&D players, they make hard driving rock & roll that appeals to the intellect. And besides that, they just kick ass! If they are not your cup of tea fine, but their level of musicianship is rare and undeniable!

As for the Beasties, they are revolutionary. If all you know about them is "fight for your right to party" then you just don't know them at all. Their rap is topical, humorous and full of style. Although they have sampled others music, they also all play their own instruments and write music, not just words. And they are good musicians. They started out as a punk-type band. You can debate whether they belong in the R&R HOF but I for one and glad to see them get some credit.

There's not a band around that hasn't been influenced by Rush or a band that was influenced by Rush, or a band that was influenced by a band that was influenced by Rush.... It's just a matter of time before a band gets nominated, and elected, and then shows up at the ceremony and says: "Sorry, this is a sham. If Rush isn't in, we decline..." and Joel looks like the complete MORON he appears to be to rational Rock & Roll fans everywhere....
