Alice Cooper, the Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi and LL Cool J were some of the big nominees announced this morning for induction into the 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The full list heralds other music stars like Chic, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John, J.Geils Band, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits and Chuck Willis.
Cooper was thrilled with his nomination and told CNN, "We are honored to be nominated for induction in to the Hall. Anytime you are nominated in your chosen profession, it's definitely a compliment to be recognized."
According to Hall of Fame President and CEO Joel Peresman, the ballots are on their way to more than 500 voters. Peresman says, “We believe our nominating committee has put forth a list of artists that truly represent the wide variety of music that defines rock and roll.”
This year’s inductees will be announced in December and the 26th Annual Induction Ceremony will take place on March 14, 2011.
Did your favorite artist make the cut or did they join the list of the Hall of Fame's most shocking snubs? We're looking at you, Rush fans!
It's shameful that Linda Ronstadt is not already inducted in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. Worse that she has not been nominated. She should be on the top of the list for the next inductees. And what about Stevie Nicks (solo), Heart, Joan Jett and Pat Benatar. They aren't in, either.
Thanks , I've recently been looking for information about this topic for a long time and yours is the best I've discovered till now. But, what concerning the bottom line? Are you sure about the supply?|What i do not realize is in reality how you're now not really much more neatly-liked than you might be right now. You're very intelligent.
This is really interesting, You are a very skilled blogger. I've joined your feed and sit up for seeking extra of your fantastic post. Also, I've shared your site in my social networks
Thanks for some other informative site. Where else may I am getting that type of information written in such an ideal approach? I've a challenge that I'm simply now running on, and I've been on the look out for such information.
The difference between the replacement singers in Journey (Steve Augeri for Steve Perry) and Styx (Lawrence Gowan for Dennis DeYoung)and the replacement singer in Chicago (Jason Scheff for Peter Cetera), is that the replacement singers in Journey and Styx arrived very, very, very late into the game, the late 1990s and early 2000s to be exact and they never had any hits with those singers played on the radio. Augeri and Gowan will not be inducted, and they shouldn't be inducted.
Jason Scheff on the other hand has been with Chicago since 1985 (25 years) and he has written 19 songs for the band's last 7 studio albums and there is more to come. Jason Scheff sang lead on two Top 5 Chicago hits: Will You Still Love Me? (1986) and What Kind Of Man Would I Be? (1989). Songs that are still heavily played on radio. It would look very odd if the replacement for Peter Cetera was not inducted into the Rock Hall with the rest of Chicago. He's a big part of the story.
The appropriate comparison would be Jason Scheff to Sammy Hagar. Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen in 1985, the same year that Jason Scheff replaced Peter Cetera in Chicago. Sammy Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Van Halen. Jason Scheff will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Chicago.
The Rock Hall inducted 12 members of The Grateful Dead and 16 members of Parliament-Funkadelic. I'm pretty sure they can handle 10 or 12 members of Chicago.

@Todd – Please stop your hateful trolling. To classify RUSH or their fans as D&D demonstrates your lack of knowledge of the band's music or their fans. So, instead of surfing around for things to be hateful towards, I suggest you go find a band you do like and talk nice about them. You might find more positive attention that way.

The Chicago Blackhawks have won the Stanley Cup during a Barack Obama presidency, and now Chicago the band will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame sometime between 2011 and 2017!!
Singer-Songwriter and Pianist Elton John and his songwriting partner, Lyricist Bernie Taupin, were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992, but only Elton John was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. This does not make any sense whatsoever. If there had not been a Bernie Taupin, there would not have been an Elton John and vice versa. Their music was a collaborative effort. Bernie Taupin should have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame back in 1994 as a Lyricist in the Non-Performers category, the same year that Elton John was inducted in the performers category.
Bernie Taupin didn’t just write lyrics exclusively for Elton John. Bernie Taupin also wrote the lyrics for songs recorded by Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart, Kiki Dee, Cher, Alice Cooper, Robert Palmer, Melissa Manchester, Rick Derringer, The Hudson Brothers, Olivia Newton John, The Motels, Starship, Heart, Animotion, Stray Cats, John Waite, Martin Page, Peter Cetera, Bryan Ferry, Tammy Wynette, Little Richard, Marianne Faithful, Courtney Love, John Anderson, Willie Nelson, Teddy Thompson, Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, Toby Keith, Brian Wilson, and Leon Russell, as well as for his own singing career, both as a solo artist and as a member of his own late-1990s Country-Western band, The Farm Dogs.
Bernie Taupin’s biggest success outside from his work with Elton John was the 1978 album, From the Inside by Alice Cooper, which included ten songs with lyrics by Bernie Taupin and music by Alice Cooper, Dick Wagner, Steve Lukather, Bruce Roberts and David Foster. From the Inside spawned the Top 20 hit, How You Gonna See Me Now. In 1985, Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to two songs that would go on to hit number one on the Billboard 100 Singles Chart: We Built This City by Starship, and These Dreams by Heart, both with music written by Martin Page. Earlier on in 1974, Ringo Starr scored a Top 5 hit with Snookeroo, a song written for him by Bernie Taupin and Elton John.
Bernie Taupin and Elton John comprise one of the longest running and most successful songwriting teams of all time. Bernie Taupin’s 40 years of collaborative work with Elton John alone should qualify him for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Please induct Lyricist Bernie Taupin into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in the Non-Performers category. His induction is long overdue.
ROBIN TROWER the incredible blues guitarist of Procol Harem and his solo career with the greatest blues singer of all time JAMES DEWAR!
JETHRO TULL!!! Come on RRHOF get your act together these guys are 40 years of real Rock and Roll. Do your job next year!!
Blue Oyster Cult!
Donna Summer??? Seriously?? What about Pat Benatar? She paved the way for a lot of female rockers. It may be because she didn't take any bulls*** from the record companies. She still can rock it! Just sayin.....
Honestly big big props to Tom Waits and the good Dr for being nominated cause they deserve it the most out of all the people on the list.
But come on still no Stevie Ray Vaughan what the he**!!!
OMFG there are some real idiots here if they think a band like Rush don't deserve to bi the HOF (and no I'm not a hugh fan but do like some of their music). These guys having been rocking for 40+ years, have their own unique sound and have influenced so many bands... Its a shame
What is the big deal about Rush? Didn't like them then, don't like them now.
This is outrageous. How can they snub Men Without Hats again!!!! What a joke.
Yeah well...Howard says it best. Personally I am going to boycott the so called hall of fame and never will go there or support it due to the truly influential artists they deny. How many shows were cancelled this summer because of lack of ticket sales...for so many groups. How many venues are filled to sell out or near sell out proportions this ummer? By "old" guys? And about Tom Sawyer...if only you had the PRIVELEGE to see Alex and how he performs this song TODAY, I would give you my next pay check if that wouldn't change your mind. Enuf said.
It should be called the Music Hall Of Fame. Hopefully Laura Nyro, who has been and continues to be such an influence on music, will not be overlooked again. You youngsters should listen to her. Actually RRHOF became a joke to me last year when ABBA was inducted....huh?
As a lifelong Rush fan, I am glad they are not in. The hall of fame is a joke and I wouldn't want them to be part of the joke. Rappers? Child please.
Say what you will, but Linda Ronstadt deserved to be in the R&RHOF 19 years ago (her first year of eligibility) and ever since. She was THE #1 female rock artist and biggest solo female concert draw of the 70s and is STILL recording and touring. Her multiple Grammy's in multiple genres that include, Rock, Pop, Traditional, Country, Mexican, etc. further cement her versatility. Wake up, HOF voters! You are inducting a group who sang "Freak out, le freak, say chic" and "Good Times" before a woman who has sung her heart out with intelligent lyrics and a set of pipes envied by most vocalists for more than 40 years? Come on!
Rush, Journey, Tull, Kiss, Yes the list goes on. The RRHF has no credibility when they induct non-rock artists ahead of these groups. Sheesh.
I know I am dating myself but rock music had two monster groups in the late 60's and early 70's that continually get snubbed:
They were my favorites for years, sold millions of records, packed arenas. Now that the R&R HOF is selecting way down below the pantheon of "mega stars" (Alice Cooper?), how do these bands keep getting ignored?
Beastie boys more infleuntial to music than rush? I like both groups, but have to say that ask a drummer who he thinks is great, ask a bassist who they like. Ask a guitar player the same, the top 10 will consist of members of rush, I guarantee that.
I agree. You just don't know much about rock music if you deny the influence that Rush has made on most rock musicians. To say that the Beastie Boys were more influential than Rush you gotta be kidding me!. Everyone around me right now is snickering and laughing at that comment.
Man, you and your snickering D&D buddies must be right it IS ridiculous to think that the Beastie Boys are more influential than Rush . . . Oh wait, apparently the rarhof thinks so too. Ever heard of Def Jam? Engineers of rap music based on exposure of the beasties. Just because you hate mainstream music doesn't make rush better than Bon Jovi, llcoolj or the beastie boys. Where rush only touches a small population of parent's basement dwelling Canadian glue sniffers, the aforementioned acts have had a worldwide effect on not only music, but culture as well.
Chic? Really? DISCO SUCKS!!!
RUSH deserves a spot in the hall 10x more than anyone they could possibly nominate. Bon Jovi? seriously?
It really doesn't matter anymore if Rush gets inducted into the R&R HoF. Even if you don't like the band personally, you cannot deny what they've accomplished the last 36 years! They must be doing something right, eh? Truth be told ... I hope they do one day get inducted and then they say, "Thanks, but no thanks."
A SIN and ashame that so many 1960's mega stars continue to be side swiped. One example is Neil Sedeka, who had 30 charted hits per the Billboard top pop singles book 1955-2002. This does not even include other songs he has written, or songs he was a part of. Way too much focus on more recent groups, that should spend their time in the penalty box, when great artists and lyrics were being made before so many of these newer groups were even born.
This is why I have not, and will not visit this mockery of what is called a 'Hall of Fame'. Baby Boomer Bill, age 63.
You said it Bill. Let's not forget Pat Boone, Connie Francis and Paul Anka as well.
What about the steve miller band.
Seriously, where is Kiss??? How did the Beastie Boys get on the list instead of them?? Don't get me wrong, I like the Beastie Boys however, Kiss blows them away!
...and I can't fricking wait!! By the way, RRHOF is run by a bunch of idiots
Beastie boys suck. Maiden &Rush along with bon jovi are way better than those idiots of beastie boys
What no lawerance welk if rap is R&R then so is he J. Giles i can understand one of the greatest guitar players ever but cool give me a break.
Tom Waits is golden.
from what ive read all music considered rock roll now days how rap can be considered R&R i have no clue what no lawerance welk.
Flock of Seagulls, Kaja Googoo???? Are u serious?? Those bands were hardley one hit wonders, as for Rush, they are one of the most talented bands ever, Journey should have been in alongtime ago, LL Cool J???? He's gonna get in before Kiss, the people who make these nominations should be ashamed of themselves.
how can any of you say that the beastie boys deserve to be in here. they had about as much influence on music as weird al. red hot chili peppers, kiss, jethro tull. those are great bands that deserve this honor. bon jovi i can see only because he has stayed relevant for over 20 years and had sold out stadiums all over the world during that time. but seriously people supporting beastie boys even being nominated should never be allowed to listen to music ever again. ll cool j has made more of an impact as an actor than as a musical artist. if he gets in we might as well enshrine will smith to the rr hof. all respect to him as an actor, but he lasted longer in music than ll. unless i mistaken nirvana isnt even in the hall, how can anyone enshrine the beastie boys over them.
Beastie Boys introduced rap music to the white mainstream and made it accessible to the masses. Even if you hate rap, you have to acknowledge their widespread influence on the overall music scene not to mention arts and politics. Don't think they are musicians? You haven't listened. Much more influence on music than the likes of Rush.
Ignoring Rush by not even placing them on the list of nominees is beyond comprehension. You would think someone might have noticed when James Hetfield namechecked them, but no. You could just look at all of the modern bands who credit Rush as being critical to their development, and that alone would make a good case, without seeing them in concert and staring in awe at the wonder that is Rush. But, even beyond the inexplicable omission of Rush, one has to look at KISS (paved the way for hair metal), Yes and Jethro Tull (masters of progressive composition, turned rock music into an art form), Chicago (progressive composition, innovators in the use of horn sections), Deep Purple (innovated heavy metal, made one of the most important live albums of the '70s). WHAT THE HELL is J. Geils Band doing on this list???? Who in the heck is Joe Tex???? Even if one ignores Rush, how does Bon Jovi (pop metal at best, more like hard rock) get nominated over KISS, or even bands like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden?
The influence that bands like Rush, Iron Maiden, Yes, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Deep Purple (and the list goes on and on) have had over hundreds of other bands, without them, many bands that exist today wouldn't have released a single record possibly. But I don't expect them to be inducted anymore, after having inducted bands like ABBA (!?) they don't deserve being in there, they deserve something way better.
I think they should create a real Hall of Fame.
I guess the hall will include rap, country and blue grass within the next few years? Why did they call it the ROCK N ROLL hall of fame?
bon jovi, llcoolj, donna summer and public enemy is all i think should be in there kiss too but neil diamond on that's just wrong what was his big rock song hava nagila no offense 2 the jews
he should get in based soley on his ability to stay as relevant as long as he has
Alice Cooper? A one hit wonder joke. Bon Jovi? Bon Jovi? Really? An embarrasement to Rock n Roll joke. LL Cool J? Does anyone remember one of his songs after 1992 joke. Only Dr. John, Beastie Boys and the genius of Tom Waits deserve this. First it was Madonna, then Metallica now this list? The Rock & Roll hall of fame is one bad joke.
You must be twenty years old. The Cooper gang were THE biggest thing in the world in '73.
Being a fan of KISS for many years, I am disappointed that these guys aren't in...
However, You have to take in to consideration that as Kiss' popularity faded in the early 80's BonJovi began to SOAR!!!
They sold out show after show and are still doing so now. I was never a HUGE fan of BonJovi but they did their thing and my hat is off to them.
They should put Kreator on the list
umm hello?! SRV?
What a joke. Rrhof continues to make itself insignificant.
rush blows big d**k
Barry manilow !!!
grow up and stop b****in they could have put worse bands in the list.
Rush isn't as overated as zepplin. Everytime I hear them it makes me cringe.
Rush tops all on the doorstep screwjob list. journey too. any hiphop going in is healthy for The Hall as long as they put in the best ones. i don`t want to see Flava MC the 2011 induction...... i`m still waiting a few more years for Pantera`s induction.
where is flock of seagulls in all of this, how about kaja googoo. but for real rush deserves it more than anyone you guys have listed, and im not even that big of a fan
Tyler... by the way..... it's ok that you're musically illerate.
Rush "overlooked" again.Who are the low life music fans deciding on this years crap nominees?
Tyler!!!! When you say RUSH is God awful, what do you mean by that? They suck because they're 3rd ALL TIME IN MUSIC HISTORY for consecutive gold and platinum records(behind the rolling stones and the beatles). They suck because Neil Peart is the greatest Rock and Roll Drummer of ALL TIME. VOTED BY DRUMMERS. Maybe they suck because Geddy Lee's bass playing has influenced HUNDREDS of current Bass players? Maybe they suck because they're outselling KISS on this current tour? Do they suck when Gene Simmons says that is a disgrace that RUSH is not in the Hall of Fame? I could go on and on..... so get you facts straight before you run your ignorant mouth about a band you know nothing about. When you've listen to every song RUSH has done, analyzed their lyrics and seen them in concert... then formulate an opinion. IDIOT!
Umm how about INXS?
Anyone who says Rush sucks just shows they know very little about music, or are too young to know the bands legacy. Probably the most talented R&R band ever, both lyrically n technically.
Rush.....Rock Gods! They will be the best even in the year 2112.
Rush is a cheap, less-talented Genesis imatation. They are not at all original.
I understand why Kiss fans can be upset about being snubbed but really? Heart and Rush?? They both suck, they are god awful. That's probably why they haven't been nominated. I love the Beastie Boys but Tom Waits deserves it more than they do. Maybe both will make the cut. Oh and yes the Cure should probably be nominated too. They are a huge influence in a lot of different types of music.
Thumbs up for rush tull heart boston and most importantly, ready for this one? YES!
You are damn right! Yes should have been there since the beginning of this Hall of Fame, same goes with Rush...
Jethro Tull deserves being there, too, King Crimson aswell (don't know if they're there, don't think so!).
Can you belive they inducted ABBA, but not Yes?!
Even if you think Rush is overrated, their technical ability and influence is undeniable. They are fantastic musicians and put on an unbelievable show. I am really pleased to see Tom Waits nominated though. It's nice that he got some well deserved recognition.
This is stupid. No KISS. Even bigger disappointment is no JOURNEY, 150 million records sold. At least put Steve Perry in.
JOURNEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE A LONG TIME AGO.
if they are gonna put hiphop acts in (as a hip hop fan I rather they didnt) since they are both nominated Beastie Boys dont deserve to get in over LL Cool J
i would really love to see kiss inducted into the hall of fame but ll cool j?? what the hell?? he's not even rock n roll for god sake. another band i would love to see inducted is motley crue. the committee needs to start using their heads and start thinking to induct bands and singers who deserve to be there not r&b and hip hop singers. the key word is rock n roll you morons
r&r hall of fame isn't only for "rock & roll." it represents artist who have paved their own path in whatever genre of music they may produce(d). soon enough you're going to have acts like sons of leon, possibily fall out boy of course beyonce, and the list goes on, being nominated. soooo keep waiting, kiss will soon be nominated. :)
Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi and LL Cool J are all great artists. However, I agree that KISS should've gotten nominated as well
Jethro Tull should have been in long before *any* on this list. 40 years and still going strong!!!
Yes! Its about time Bon Jovi was acknowledged!
THE BEASTIE BOYS, PUBLIC ENEMY, RUSH, THE CURE, MOODY BLUES, E.L.O., RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, DONNA SUMMER, KISS, DEPECHE MODE, & a lot more should already be in the R~&~R~H~O~F! This partial list represents acts acts that should meet the criteria! They all were groundbreaking and helped pave the way for countless entertainers! The fact these people are still doing what they do best is proof of their power!
All I know is that I want the Beasties, Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Donna Summer, and Bon Jovi to make it solely so that I can see the all-star jam they do together at the end. I'd love to see them all perform Diamond's "America" – HA!
Not a bad list, although I agree with the comment about Heart. Rush should never get in the HOF – they are the most overrated band there is.
Yeah, Rush is pretty lame. Geddy Lee is an annoying prat.
Jeff is the most overrated poster on the internet. You're an imposter of a music fan if you think that Rush is overrated. 3 of the greatest rock musicians ever are overrated? You are ridiculous.
Rush stole their sound from Genesis, plain and simple. They are one-hit wonders at best and more likely described as cheap imatations of real rockers.
GIRLS! And all I really want is GIRLS!
I am so happy that the J. Geils Band was nominated!!! It's well deserved. Their House Party live album/CD (among others) is timeless and outstanding. Bon Jovi, too. Good luck.
What? Rush isn't in the hall yet? If they aren't, that's kinda jacked up to have a rapper in before an actual rock group. Ratings I guess
Rush belongs in the Rock Hall. Wasn't Chic a one hit wonder? Red Hot Chili Peppers snubbed again huh? They're no Rush but still.
Love Neil Diamond! He's been around alot longer, & is an awesome singer! I can actually understand his words & he doesn't have to scream to be understood. I vote for Neil Diamond!!!!
I agree. When we visited the HoF, the first thing I said was where is Neil Diamond? A long overdo nomination
Rush is the bomb.love em to death.rock on.
Where's KISS? Heart? Rush? These folks really deserve to be in there!! I don't know who comes up with these nominees, but they need some serious help!
Love this list of Nominees!!! Beastie Boys, LLcoolJ, Bon Jovi, etc!! Very Cool!
No Heart? No Pat Benatar? No Rush??? Chic, really???
Where's Rush, Kiss, Heart, Deep Purple, Steve Miller Band, Bad Company, Doobie Brothers, Yes, Journey ? Who the hell is Chuck Willis? I'm sure some of these artist are like by many but not Hall of Famers. Isn't Darlene Love the lady who played Danny Glover's wife in Leathel Weapon movies
Darlene Love is Danny Glover's wife in Lethal Weapon!
Love the Beasie Boys!! This is so well deserved.
how can you say they deserve to be in there. the beastie boys were relevant for what 5 years or so in the 90's. journey, rush, the cure, red hot chili peppers, KISS, motley crew. so many other deserve to be in the rr hof the beastie boys should never even be mentioned to be allowed to step foot in there as paying customers let alone enshrined
The cure got snubbed? Who cares. Don't put them in the same category as Rush. Rush has had an influence on every hard rock band that has been inducted since the early 90s. More albums than I can even remember. Put them where they belong!!!!!
The Cure has had more influence on music over all, compared to Rush. Them not being in there is a complete travesty. Same goes for Depeche Mode. Pitiful.
I (and Neil and Alex) are tired of being snubbed by the Hall of Fame hoser judges....take off!!!!
I cannot believe they skipped Rush again! Come on, are you that stupid? This bad is still rocking and continues to sell out to fans around the world...still the same three guys kicking but and working hard. R&R Hall of Fame BOD wake the bleep up for God sake!
" continues to sell out to fans around the world..."
Freakin A Right. Good thing RUSH is is inogural inductee's to the Bad A$$ Hall of Fame!
Bon Jovi? LL Cool J? I don't even know who most of the other people are. No wonder why the S@x Pistols wanted nothing to do with it.
Why isn't Menudo in the Hall?
No KISS, you gotta be kidding!
Kiss is already in the R&RHOF
Um, no they're not guerilla. Unless there is a place for most snubs in the R&RHOF.
GO BEASTIE BOYS!!!!!
Yeah go away because your sorry excuse for music sucks!
I'm so Firsty..... hahahahaha. Beastie Boys Rock!!!
Rush sucks. Geddy Lee sounds like a hobbit! These hack canadians make "hard rock" for dungeons & dragons playing dorks. If I hear Tom Sawyer again I am going to strangle someone.
@Todd – Alice Cooper played D&D, many of the members of Metallica play D&D... Many of the prominent bands and groups have members who play or played D&D. Are they all dorks too?
If they play dungeons and dork . . . Oops, I mean dragons, YUP!
rush is one of the greatest bands of all time! Most underated band! i like the beasties but its rap crap! not rock and roll! they should have a seperate hall of fame for that stuff! all they do is sample and steal other music!
Rush is one of best bands of ALL time, with virtuosos on each of their instruments. They do not make music for D&D players, they make hard driving rock & roll that appeals to the intellect. And besides that, they just kick ass! If they are not your cup of tea fine, but their level of musicianship is rare and undeniable!
As for the Beasties, they are revolutionary. If all you know about them is "fight for your right to party" then you just don't know them at all. Their rap is topical, humorous and full of style. Although they have sampled others music, they also all play their own instruments and write music, not just words. And they are good musicians. They started out as a punk-type band. You can debate whether they belong in the R&R HOF but I for one and glad to see them get some credit.
There's not a band around that hasn't been influenced by Rush or a band that was influenced by Rush, or a band that was influenced by a band that was influenced by Rush.... It's just a matter of time before a band gets nominated, and elected, and then shows up at the ceremony and says: "Sorry, this is a sham. If Rush isn't in, we decline..." and Joel looks like the complete MORON he appears to be to rational Rock & Roll fans everywhere....
@Todd – Hah!!! DUDE!!!!
If all you know about RUSH is Tom Sawyer, then you haven't heard anything!!!!
You have no idea what you're talking about...your loss...
Besides there are a lot of hobbits in R&R – Aerosmith, Guns 'n Roses anyone???
What about The Kinks ??? What band has not covered "You Really Got Me"
