Jon Hamm: A porn star is not a movie starJon Hamm has some harsh words for those housewives, bachelors, and Garden State "guidos" and "guidettes" so desperate for fame and fortune: You're no better than a porn star. So says the "Mad Men" actor in the October issue of Details magazine. "L.A. represents opportunity," he says. "And, as has been proven over and over in the current media landscape, it doesn't take much for them to put you on TV. If that's all you want, you can be on 'The Bachelor' or 'The Real Housewives' or whatever show just wants oversized personalities, ridiculous behavior, and zero dignity."
Hamm equates spotlight-loving celebrity wannabes to those who star in skin flicks. "If you just want to be famous. . . that's not that much different than porn. 'I'm a movie star!' Well, no, you're not," he says. "You're a porn star, and that's completely different. And you know, hey, mazel tov - porn probably built half the houses out here, but you're selling your dignity in a way that I feel I'm not. And once you sell it, it's gone. You ain't getting it back." That's not to say 39-year-old Hamm isn’t enjoying his ascent to Hollywood's A-list. "You get to sit at the big table with the big boys and hang out," says the actor, who stars in Ben Affleck's gritty crime drama "The Town," in theaters Friday. "Sean Penn and Meryl Streep are having a conversation, and you're standing next to them, and they stop and turn to you and say, 'Oh God, we love your show.' Yeah, that wasn't happening with my work in [the 2006 ABC series] 'What About Brian.'" |

Hear, hear Jon Hamm!
Thanks for sharing, I discovered this article while googling for movie news, attractive comments and splendid points made.
Jon Hamm is a talented actor, and remember 1st amendment, we can all agree to disagree. I commend him on his courage to speak up..hey its his opinion, and if you don't like it, don't read it...Go JON....
"Meryl Streep and Sean Penn are standing there having a conversation and they turn to you and say, 'Waiter, could you bring us more drinks?'"
He's a doosh who will be on Celebrity Rehab in a year or two
Being a star means getting to insult anyone and everyone you feel like insulting, many of whom are just trying to get by, while you get to become a millionaire because you are a "real actor". Interesting that someone here compared you to George Clooney – another snob!
THANK YOU, Mr. Hamm. FInally, a REAL celebrity speaks the truth. These reality stars are TALENTLESS, ARTIFICIAL LOSERS! I long to see the day that one of them is famous for anything besides getting drunk or having too much plastic surgery! If you don't have anything to bring to the table, your 15 minutes are UP!
I've never posted a comment before, but what in the hell is wrong with all of you people? Why do you spend any amount of time posting your worthless opinions about an entertainment article. Is this what your life is all about? Pathetic. Get off of your asses and do something that actually has a purpose.
you mean like acting ha ha ha ..... You sound as judgmental as Mr Hamm (fitting name for an actor who is full of himself)
We should be asking you the same thing. "I've never posted a comment before." Right... and even if that were the case, you just went and posted. Congrats, you are an idiot.
Maybe if you'd stop eating my a55, I could get off mine.
Tried to watch Mad Men, really did. I just couldn't. Jon Hamm isn't the only actor on that show who just seems to stand around looking pained, but he is the one I remember. Ok, all you fans out there, write in, how he the greatest actor in the history of the wordl and the rest of us should be grateful that he is around.
I love how everyone is getting mad because he spoke his mind about trashy reality shows. I bet the majority of those who are upset are losers that:
A- Look up to Jersey Shore
B- Probably have x-rated pictures taken with a cell phone camera floating around the internet
C- Didn't finish Jr.High School
D-Have had at least 2 kids before their 18th birthday.
Which brings me to the conclusion that John Hamm and those who agree with him are class acts and the rest are filth-pigs who should crawl back under their rock.
I agree with A. Then... your credibility goes downhill. However, when I go back to what I believe is your basic idea... then I totally agree... reality shows are garbage and it says volumes about those who enjoy watching them.
Hamm and other real actors work at their professions; reality show "stars" and the like don't and have no talent other than being, for the most part, totally obnoxious (Spencer and Heidi, for instance). They only lucked out. I agree with him totally.
"Reality shows" killed television and I have never watched them and I'm not going to start now. If they want reality tv they should come film my life, but it's not for sale!
What a pompous dolt. I get to hang out with A listers so I'm better than everyone else. I've never even heard of him or his show. Must not be missing much based on his demeanor.
You can thank the writers strike for the explosion of reality TV programs. If there was no strike then producers/networks would never have figured out that you can produce TV programs with equal ratings at about 1/50th the cost of a normal show with writers/actors/directors. Now all you need is a cameraman and a producer and you are in business.
why don't they just call those types of shows 'un-reality' shows, or no-reality. Some people do have 15 minues of fame, and their clocks are ticking out now.
He's right.
I totally agree with Hamm, my son is a struggling actor who spent years studying his craft and works hard. These reality "stars" are not actors and should not even be grouped with the likes of Streep,Penn, or yes even Hamm.
SO WHATS NEXT???, A SHAMELESS, VALUESLESS, GENERATIONS KILLER DRUGDEALER BECAMING AN ACTOR?!!! JUST BECAUSE HE KNOWS THE "RIGHT" PEOPLE?? WHAT KIND OF WORLD IS LEFT FOR OUR KIDS???
LIES! you aren't Iron Man. If you were Tony Stark then you wouldn't care about any ones celebrity status but your own! Get off the comment box you faker!
The truth is you are wrong. I have never heard of this guy. A list? more like D list. As far as adult movie stars at least they are more fun to watch and entertaining. I'd rather watch Jersey shore than this AMC D list actor.
Says a lot about you then, huh?
Never heard of him, but of all the articles out there you picked THIS one with his name and photo to click on and read. Tammy: Both Bitter and Dumb - an ugly combination.
Anybody who knocks this guy is probably a Jersey Shore/Snookie fan. Talk about being full of ones self? Who calls themself "The Situation"? Seriously. I want to smack that little creep.
Self respect and dignity is everything. There is no talent in stripping or committing lewd acts. If you wanna see some animalistic behaviour just switch to the Animal Planet channel. Young people today has no concept of self preservation.
Anyone recall who his character was in What About Brian? Loved that show but don't remember him.
90% of you should Die!!
I totally agree with him. 99% of reality tv is a scam to get raitings. no talent wanna be whoring themselves for 15min of fame. it is a shame that our culture has fallen to such to such a low as to give crap like this any merit whatsoever. reality tv sux....more REAL actors should speak out against these morons making a mockery of a fine art.
I can honestly say that I don't watch 1 reality show. They all suck.
Hamm you got balls, no truer words spoken. Shame more "legitimate actors", I'm talking the BIG SCREEN stars, don't come out and say the same thing.
Who censors these comments? His publicist?
These commments are HILARIOUS! I think they should base a reality tv show on this comment board. lol I just wanted to post something with righteous indignation. Huff!
I'm sorry...John "who?"
Maybe if some of you tools read the entire article from the source, your opinion would change.
One other thing, I do agree with him about reality tv though, gzzz what a waste of time. But its just a sign of how shallow our country is becoming.
What an egotistical jerk. I can't stand people who think they are better than everyone else. Wow he gets to sit at the big boy table, sounds like an insecure child to me. I'll be sure not to see your movie. If you are as good an actor as Ben, you are surely just a flash in the pan and we won't have to read anymore stupid interviews about how wonderful it is being an A-lister....pfft.
I agree with him! The only thing that bothers me is the fact that he isn't including himself! Does he know how to spell the word, act. That show really sucks just like the new one Rubicon!
this guy is intimidated by the lower rungs of the entertainment industry, mainly because they get less money for their less skilled entertaining work, which suits the producers well, but not guys like him, who is dying to be an elitist snob
go paris and snookie
and, oh, jenna too!
This is why you should never booze it up over an interview... You just come across as an @as, even if you are right.
Don't drink and comment either.... @ss.
It all ended in the cesspool when the laugh track was used. We are made to believe that something is funny when it is obviously not. Reality tv ? S our reality which is flawed since we have to see a false perception of life as seen through a nitwits pen. How much longer must we have to know be exposed to snl?
"I will have the dignity and respect, that I deserve...." (sniff)
Reality TV. Stink. Stank. Stunk.
I just wanted to comment and i did!
Taking himself waaaaaaaay too seriously. Go to a soup kitchen and feed the homeless. Get over yourself.
This is Adam G. I agree.
What kinda guy who earns millions talks crap about people who make thousands.. it would be like me talkin crap about the bum who gets the free bowl of soap at the local salvation army... this guys a tool..
Bravo Jon !!!! for telling like it is.
Who cares?
Voting Republican in November!
Who cares.
I still say that p@rn actors are more creative than the bevy of reality show nitwits. This guy is still a fame wh@ring idiot, though. Does anyone even watch his show?
'Fraid so, bub.
Speaks the truth. If more like him wouldndo the same thing then I would not have to hear about Paris Hilton anywhere. Please spare me. This guy has balls and integrity.
This dude sounds very self-important to me. Who the he!! died and said that you were the one to judge every other celebrity (yes, you heard me right, CELEBRITY) on the planet? Go do something really important with your life, like tend to injured and homeless cildren in Hati, and then maybe you will actually be worth noting.

Do you think saying this three times is going to make me agree with it?
One thing he doesn't say is what he and "reality" stars have in common: luck.
Jon has a valid point. Reality tv is filling a vacuum. Its hold on that space is quite tenuous. The RTV 'actors' are merely placeholders. 5 years from today will anyone know what a snookie is? Fifteen minutes can' come quickly enough for me.
What's a "snookie?"
There is one truth to this, Hamm will have acting gigs for life, a reality star will have acting gigs for ?????
I read these barbs being traded back and forth between comment board users, and I can't help but imagine what kind of lives you live . You can actually afford to spend time, stress and energy insulting people.?...over jon hamm???????
Incredible really.
And yet, here you are doing the same. Funny don't you think?
Hey Jon, nobody watches AMC or your show. Critics hype it up which is the only reason anyone has heard of it.
This man sounds like a self adoring wad of nothing special.
Jon Who?. Never heard of him.
Q: What do you call an actor between gigs?
A: Busboy.
This sounds like a really nice down to earth guy. NOT!!! More the kind of guy who would help a struggling actor by destroying their aspirations of being an actor. Are you kidding me this guy sounds like a self-centered pompous ass.
Who knows, maybe this guy is just jealous because he put more work into it and they got rich without really even trying too hard. I understand most reality stars are not rich and will fade quickly, but some manage to spin it into fame and fortune. But one thing is clear, he needs to be careful. It's not like he has had an extensive career. He is still new to Hollywood and most of these folks just disappear.
Easy to say stuff like that once you're famous. But I mostly agree. Talented, trained actors and writers can't find work because people would rather watch Barbara from kentucky eat a donkey spleen for a prize. Don't fault the people on the show, though Jon. Fault the millions of people who watch that garbage.
As far as "real" actors go, I'm not sure grown people who are paid tons of money to play make pretend for a living are really that much better than people who get paid for, or are just seen, on television for an hour per week for a couple months.
I agree. And you are right. I don't see the difference between TV show actors and so called movie stars. I do think we average joes really should be given more credit. We do not all worship celebs as the media seems to think we do. I do not think celebrities live in the same sort of reality we do. They seem to believe that everyone wants to know their business. The media makes it out to be this way, but it just isn't true. I know people who don't even watch TV let alone movies. Celebs seem to think all we average joes and janes just wanna sit around and watch them all day. I guess there are some people who do. I am not one of them. I hate reality TV. I could care less what happens in the lives of celebs. I have my own life and own problems to worry about.
As for reality TV stars, I don't think we will be seeing any of them win an oscar anytime soon. I can't believe what some people will do and say for a little fame or noriety. Its shameful. Unfortunately as long as people watch the crap it will be on TV. I also believe millions of dollars to act is excessive when you have police, military, teachers and other people with way more important jobs making a lot less income than celebs. Its sad when a celeb's realtionship business makes national headlines instead of more important issues. Again I blame the media for a lot of that. Would we even know what was going on with these people if the media didn't print or report it? No.
And all those magazines we see out there showing so and so doing whatever. Most of that crap is lies and just a waste of money. When I was a kid the most gossipy thing you could find was The National Enquirer. Now everywhere you look some magazine is posting someone's business and some of these celebs just eat it up. The reality show stars are gonna ride their star till the flame burns out. There was some reality show star on TV the other day and my hubby asked, "What has this person ever done that was so important that someone would think you would want to watch them on TV?" I answered "Got me?"
Kind of funny he is dpeaking ill of other's on TV when all he is, is an actor. It's not like he is curing cancer and yet he acts like he is better than the others. All of these people are easily replacable.
I'm so sorry he didn't live up to your career choice expectations. Not everybody has the same drive or ambition and those who aspire to be actors are no less worthy than those who aspire to be doctors or research scientists or politicians. At least Hamm isn't shallow like you appear to be.
Nah, he's just a starstruck fame wh@re judging by that last paragraph. He's just another actor.
That's funny Jack. You are comparing actors to doctors and research scientists and you think others are shallow? What's the matter Jack? You sound like a frustrated actor. If you REALLY believe actors are all that, then you need a huge dose of reality.
@ Actors are ALL Overrated: I'd suggest YOU take a reality check pal. It is shallow to conclude that everyone should pursue the career goals that people like you think they should or they are somehow not worthy as a human being. Do you know what incredible jerk you come off sounding like or are you as stupid as you are shallow?
@Jack Dude, seek help. Are you this actor's mother or something? Actors do a job that a million other people could step in and do. This is why their "Star" fades so quickly. And the way you seem to be defending him to everyone on here is so absolutely pathetic. You are like a teenage girl insisting the Backstreet Boys are the most talented group in history. As I said, Seek Help.
@Actors are ALL Overrated: YOU are the one who needs to seek help. I pity your existence if all you think of someone's worth is how much they contribute to society as a whole. Mr. Hamm may not be a research scientist or a doctor but to an enlightened person (which you obviously are not) he contributes something to society, I'm really sorry that your estimation of a person's worth is based on your vaunted notion of what they contribute to society. I am not Hamm's mother and I'm not a teenage girl nor am I an actor. I'm just a person who apparently is more enlightened than you ever will be. You on the other hand are a pathetic jerk.
So... Jews haven't been around for thousands of years?
Aren't you a smart one? Go back to your trailer park.
Er@tic art has been found in many different cultures all over the world, before the Jews even. Ancient cultures weren't as uppity about s@x and the human body as we are in our more 'enlightened' 'advanced' cultures.
@ P. Tato.
Racism used to be cool. It ain't anymore! Besides, out of all the businesses in the world you pick the one and only one that has been invented and dominated by Juden to claim that their wanna be Italianos? Grow up dude. Erm actually... I guess you are already pretty old... Say 1930's.
May I get that again in English, with punctuation, so I can actually figure out what you are talking about?
@ P. Tato.

P@rn wasn't invented by Jews. It's been around for thousands of years. Get a clue.
Lmbo. I guess he told all those reality show losers.
Jon Hamm is not only a very fine actor but is going to be a HUGE movie star...if he gets the right roles, he could be the next George Clooney...just look at the guy-he`s a movie star!
self-righteous much?
Imbecile.
He's one to talk as I have no idea who this person is.
As for p@rn, I would feel insulted if someone compared my line of work to trash tv.
He's only the star of one of the biggest shows on television. That's your fault for being ignorant.
I know who he is now, smart ass. Just another full of himself actor.
be who are if people dont like it screw them
I'm sorry, I'm confused... is that English?
I agree with this Guy, Absolutely True.
Used to like the guy. Now that he thinks movie stars are something special, I am going to puke.
yeah, it's not so much that he's wrong about reality show "stars", because we all know they're crap.....but thinking acting as a profession is somehow dignified and respectable??? Haha he plays dress up for a living...yeah he's so above those idiots. And I love the retards on here who credit him with having "courage" to speak up about these things LMFAO!!!!! He's a real pioneer in that area–up until now, nobody has been brave enough to criticize reality shows LOL
I agree. This guy is an a$$ clown. He is an actor for christ sake. It's not like he won the nobel prize in physics. The next time I hear some sanctimonious blow hard babble about the "craft" of acting I'm going to vomit on their shoes. You play make believe for a living buddy, we are not impressed.
The new Fall season hopfully will bring new blood to TV viewers - Hawaii 5-0 looks really good !!
He makes me want to poop, again and again. I'm going to each some cheese.
"Each some cheese"? Do you read what you type?
Thank God somebody in Hollywood preaching the truth...this generation has no concept of real talent
Amen to that.
I knew I loved this guy...someone with dignity and a sense of self...also not afraid to speak his mind...
He comes off as bitter. You know, like a man who struggled to get noticed, is finally there, and has to watch a bunch of young retards climb to celebrity status overnight.
That and he's probably mad that more people know who "The Situation" is than they do "Jon Hamm".
He sounds like a snob. It is just a tv show not Schindler's List or Sophie's choice. he sounds like someone is taking attention away from him. Get over it.
Actually, you two couldn't come up with a dozen synapses between you.
Why does someone who chose the name Darth Vader feel the need to defend this guy so much? Gees dude... got a crush on this guy or something?
What about you Mike? What makes you feel the need to respond to Darth Vader's comment? Gotta crush on Ron or are you just a blowhard?
You're completely out of your mind aren't you Jack? You don't even know how to come up with a decent comment to debate do you? You crack me up man. Defending a Hollywood actor that thinks he is better than everyone else just because he can read some words off of paper.
Yeah, the "Situation" will be a joke in a few years, if not already. Reality "stars" have a short shelf-life. Jon Hamm isn't bitter about their so-called fame, he's calling it like it is. No one respects reality stars. They are laughed at and those people who emulate their behavior are laughed at too. Not laughed WITH, laughed AT.
Actually, he comes off as someone who is smart. Take lessons.
No Mike, I think YOU are completely out of your mind. You sanctimoniously talk about me not being able to debate a comment but YOU are the one who got your panties in a bunch over something Darth Vader said. It seems to me that you're good at dishing out uninformed criticism of others but not so good at taking it yourself. Perhaps some much needed therapy will resolve those problems you have about measuing someone's worth based on their occupational choice.
Actually, he came off sounding like a sanctimonious jerk...kinda like you. YOU take the lessons, brainiac,
Mike and Jack – girls, girls, girls... This is about Mr, Hamm's observation on 'reality t.v. participants', not about you. LOL!!!
If he's 39, then it's been a hard 39.
True dat.
A hard 39? Hey, dunb-dumb, this guy is considered by most of the world to be one of the best looking guys on TV. And what kind of response is "true dat"? Yo momma mus' be proud, playuh'."
And by the way; for anyone who is wondering, all reality shows are scripted. No producer would leave his/or her hard earned cash in hands of a bunch of morons. They are told how to be ... it is all planned and reality is just a term they use to get our attention. They are saving money by not paying professional actors.
that information would have been new and enlightening about 10 years ago, but thanks for the heads up.
I admire his courage to speak his mind. I work in Hollywood, (nothing glamorous, trust me) this town can turn on you real quick. More power to him.
You are so right. It is an extreme act of Bravery to trash people in a forum where they aren't given the chance to respond. It's just amazing how he found the courage to think he's better than everyone, when really, he's just as attention starved as they are. They just don't hide behind fake dignity, and an undeserved sense of pride. By the way, Life of Brian was horrible, and I can't sit through more than 5 minutes of Mad Men- so, there you go. We're both disappointed with what we see when we turn on the television these days.
James, maybe you should quit while you're this far behind. Everything you've said on this forum is idiotic. Haven't you noticed that 90% of the anonymous comments left on these forums are negative and insulting? Including YOURS.
Oh I am live. sorry I am a fool
He's right, there's nothing dignified about reality TV (an oxymoron if I ever heard one). What is it with so many people willing to do anything just to be on television?
That is so funny, bc I thought I was the only one who wondered about the whole "reality tv" thing. Lol
"Reality TV" is such a hit because it demeans people, and like it or not there are a lot of people out there that like to watch people being demeaned. I have not watched any "reality TV" for this simple fact.
The guy is a moron
No, he's not. Snookie, Paris Hilton and Heidi Montag are not a talented actors or singers who clawed their way to the top like Hamm. They didn't wait tables to get acting gigs like Hamm, or live with countless roommates in roach apts. Some of them found these jobs by misbehaving or having rich daddies. Hamm earned his way to the top after being a struggling actor. And he deserves his dignity and respect. If only the rest of us could be so ambitious and relentless. Hamm, I am a huge fan and wish you the best!
Actually, you are an idiot, which is two steps below a moron.
Your comment just makes you look stupid. And you probably are.
and why is that
HEY! The sole creator of the "Poof" deserves a bit more respect than that. Snookie is vital to our every day lives, and the skin-tight dress store would be out of business without her. Do you have any idea what it takes to maintain the body of sponegebob squarepants?! I don't think you do! She spends most of her day tanning, and swallowing her top lip- that's a life full of pressures and obstacles that you and I will never understand. I think you owe her an apology!
Nice try, stupid imposter. Grow some balls and use your own alias, please.
Yep, the jury is in - looks like it's YOU who is the idiot.
He sounds correct to me.
Oh puleeaazzee this guy needs to get off of his high horse. If he didn't look the way that he does he'd be making me a grande latte right now.
LOL this guy speaks the truth!!!
Now that's what Hollywood is all about.. All that talk about drama school, and for what? Bah!!! Humbug
Id like to know how did Jon Hamm got noticed? Also, I dont think he is a big enough star to have a opinion. He is just burning bridges with his future employers.
He's not big enough to have an opinion... but you are, Jason?
