Meghan McCain slams Bristol Palin on 'Daily Show'

The business of politics got a little dirty on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" Thursday night.

Meghan McCain (yes, daughter of Arizona Senator John McCain) joined Stewart last night to chat about her book, "Dirty Sexy Politics," and the conversation soon veered into Palin territory.

The book, Stewart pointed out, "is a view of the campaign trail that’s very personal" - almost like he was reading someone's diary, he said.

“I basically wrote a very real book," McCain explained. "It’s very sad and I talk about everything – I talk about sex and politics and everything in between and what I think about Sarah Palin, which has gotten a lot of coverage.”

But McCain also had a few words to say about Palin's "Dancing With the Stars" daughter, Bristol.

“I was sent to an image consultant," she told Stewart, admitting that she wasn't on her best behavior or acting as she should while on the campaign trail. "But when you’re sent to an image consultant and [it's] said that you look like a stripper and you talk bad and you’re hurting the campaign when there’s a pregnant teen there, it does a little bit to your self esteem.”

But in the aftermath of that experience, McCain said she’s worked on finding herself, and now has a better view of the Republican party’s potential.

“I’m a believer, I just think that there’s a lot of negativity dominating the media and there’s a lot of angry people,” she said. “I’m just trying to give people that feel like they have somehow been neglected by more extremists that, you know you have a home with me and I’m fighting the good fight.”

The American political scene has always been fraught with differences–that is what it is all about--Republican/Democrat, at least we have the right to choose. Bristol and her Mom have taken more abuse than the average bear. Bristol chose to keep her child while so many teen mothers take the easy route,,,and as for one of the remarks about Sarah having a retarded child–cruel, unnecessary remark!!!!. We all need to pull together in these times of joblessness, forclosures, etc. If one cannot say something positive, then zip the lips. I am a Republican and we have had good Repulican presidents and bad ones just as we have had good and bad democratic presidents. Time to stop fingerpointing. Who in their right mind would aspire to become a president????and besides folks, the Congress and the news media run our country. Keep things in perspective.

One last thought–if Bristol chose to be on DWTS, so what???? She is obviously a bit reserved and if a teen has a child out of wedlock–there again we don't carry on about movies stars who choose the same path, after all they are "movie stars". I would prefer reading about a teen mother who chose to keep her child than read daily about the shenanigans of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton..who just do not get it and stay in trouble because of "s t o o p i d" mistakes they continue to make,,,,,,and continue going unpunished. We can all bet if we the average Joes or Janes of America did the same things, we would be held accountable and properly punished by the judicial system–no get out of jail cards in real life.

Meghan needs to get over the fact her dad did not win and get on with her life. She certainly has her opinions but like rear ends, everyone has one and that will never change.

This soapbox is closing down now, enuf said?

Meghan, there are a lot of high-class fat farms in Arizona that you should consider checking into for a month or three. Not sure what to do about that faaat mouth of yours, and the nasty things that come out of it....

And wilma... you should check that empty head of yours into a boarding school until it grows up. Libturds are a dime a dozen. GWB wasn't a conservative, but he's much smarter than this slick-a$$ phoney polluting the Oval Office at the moment.

Americans are doing on this blog what they do best. They spend so much time in negativity that the country is falling behind in every aspect of development. wake up people make a difference. It is not about Meghan or Bristol. It is about redefining a path to development for the United States that is not buried in partisan nonsense and saluting stupidity. The Tea Party is the worse side of the United States at this time, yet it gives Sarah Palin an opportunity to be important. Get up America you have work to do.

How was that bashing Bristol Palin? She was talking about her internal struggles of dealing with an image consultant telling her she was hurting the campaign and wondering how a pregnant, unwed teen wouldn't be hurting it. I can totally understand why she might have a knock to her self esteem.

I thought we had left a few prejudices behind–I was wrong. The "unwed mother" stigma screwed up more women in the fifties and sixties than anyone ever wants to admit. It led to abortions and forced adoptions which will live with the mothers forever. Good grief! She didn't kill anyone or cause anyone else any suffering and tragedy. It doesn't matter how you feel about her mother–Bristol did not do anything. She seems like a very nice girl and doesn't seem arrogant at all. Maybe the fact that she is gorgeous has something to do with the negative press. Can't we all just get along?

All she said was, she was surprised it was she and not the pregnant unwed teen (whicht, it must be admitted, is not exactly in line with conservative values) who was told to straighten up and fly right. It's not like she laid into Bristol with a ten-minute tirade. Let's take it down a notch (for America), CNN.

Meghan McCain is only giving talks and appearing on tv shows because of who her parents are. She has no more insight then the average person. He views on the Republicans are twisted because of her father. If her insight was so great she would be able to tell the world of the hypocrisy on the part of both parties.

What matters is that you have low level people in the party able to get their family and friends public jobs. These people in turn help their friend in the party get money and volunteers so that higher up politicians and county party heads can influence politicians to get more pay and benefits for the partuy faithful. These county people then go on to choose who they want to support financially and with volunteers at the state level and these state level party people get to choose our national representatives. The problem is that these county and state party representatives have so much power that the corruption costs everyone even those that help these people get in to power and stay in power.

Utah Lady what on Earth are you talking about. The mess is because of Bush and that's why Obama was elected. Let's face it Obama wouldn't have had a chance if people weren't sick of how badly screwed this country is. Bush basically is responsible for Obama being President today.

But Obama hasn't done anything. You realize that the 2 party system goes back to before the Revolution in 1776 and that EVERY PRESIDENT has had to deal with both houses of Congress right? When you said insipid things about Obama being blocked you sound like a clueless automaton bleeting whatever you hear on the Daily Show and Rachel Maddow. The largest part of the job of President of the United States is dealing with Congress to get your agenda passed. Obama is failing his MAIN JOB. It's like looking at a garbage man who won't take away your garbage and blaming the garbage for being there. Obama ain't doing jack. Meanwhile his cabinet is chock full of Neocons and the same people who staffed Bush's White House. No wonder Obama hasn't done ANY of what he promised. He sent MORE troops to Afghanistan, has sold out the Palesintians to the Jews. He hasn't even repealed Dont Ask Dont Tell. He's clueless how to be President.

@suzy diamond: Bristol does NOT live on her own. When she and Levi broke up (again) she moved back into the compound. She quit her job, quit her classes, and decided she deserved "some fun and a new challenge," to quote the dedicated young mother. So now she's off in California dancing 10 hours a day...and not raising her child any more than Sarah is raising her 'precious' toddler. Great role models, these two.

Ladies and gentlemen don't be fooled into thinking this is the Gop eating itself.Far from it in fact this is blatant mis-direction to reel in the young vote that Pres. Obama won ,by presenting a young ,apparently attractive woman as a rational repub. We were all Americans once and that used to mean something, but now we have allowed fear and hatred generated by those who are terrified that the last bastion of "white supremacy"(politics)will be taken over by the black community. This has been the way throughout the history of our Nation.Football,baseball,boxing,track-and-field,basketball,The Tuskegee Airmen. At one point in each of these cases it was decried that Blacks don't have the skill to do well in each of these instances, each time critics were proven wrong. But now as the last wall is about to fall the part of "White America" that has forever been a thorn in our country's side has declared THIS FAR AND NO FARTHER!This a sad footnote to a moment that many thought would never come.People often say blacks only voted for Pres Obama because he is Black, can you really blame them? But in reality this is not totally true if he ran under the GOP he would not have won.though they tried to bill themselves as the party of Lincoln this was only a half-hearted attempt to garner the Black vote.Until this pres election I personally had never heared them use that label before.I would just like to close with this last thought"Those who stand for nothing fall for everything!"God bless us all and help us to remember who we should be as a Nation.p.s. If you don't respect the man at least respect the office.

Let's put aside politics for a moment. Ms. McCain's book and recent "tweets" on twitter show that she needs more than just an image consultant, she needs some professional therapy to address her lack of healthy self-esteem and potentially other issues. I will also say that despite the "average" size in the US or what others want to see /believe is "healthy", Ms. McCain is not a healthy weight and I would bet dollars to doughnuts that she cannot pass a basic physical fitness test and is above the recommended BMI for her height / weight. What is healthy for the body is not a matter of taste or political view.

I love how most of the comments on this page are about her weight. Really? And most of them are made by all you republicans. You sit there behind your screens thinking yourself so powerful for criticizing a young girl about her weight. What exactly does that solve? Surely not the employment crisis or the problems with health care? Or am I missing something? She's a smart girl who is sharing her side of the story with people. When has that ever been a crime. More so, she's doing it in her own words instead of taking it to People Magazine. Furthermore, her feelings about the image consultant and the whole Bristol thing isn't the fact that Bristol "was a young girl who made one mistake" it's the fact that the Palins were (and are) branding themselves as family first and morally grounded with a sense of good religion and blah blah blah, all the while Bristol had been pregnant from the start, something that they at first tried to hide until it was impossible to hide it any longer. It's hypocritical and pathetic and THAT is what Ms. McCain had issues with, I believe. Not the "poor little girl and her one mistake" but the hypocrisy and the way it was handled. Was she perfect? No. Did she claim to be? No. But it's a bit ridiculous to tear her down for being morally damaging to the campaign when there is a teen mom standing next to her. Also...to the "Republican Diva" comments – I'd make comments about the Bush girls if I were her to. People forget that they were snotty little party girls that got away with illegal acts because Daddy was President. And a sucky one at that. 8 years and we got two wars, trillions of dollars worth of debt and millions of people unemployed. Hell, if I met them in person now I'd rag on them just for being W's kids! But then again, I was one of the many who lost my job thanks to his stellar presidency.

Meghan McCain is a refreshing young Republican. She seems sincere and is unafraid to voice her own opinion. Contrast her with Liz Cheney, who is constantly trying to justify the unjustifiable, and totally alienating independent and moderate voters.

Earlier post is correct. RNC picked Palin.McCain wanted Lieberman. And while headline IS wrong, calling CNN liberal media is like saying the sky is green. The Republican Party used to stand for personal rights as well as state's rights, but now it demands that everyone follow its skewed idea of what is "right." AND, remember that one reason the deficit is so high now ios that the Bush administration never, since the start of two wars in foreign lands, included what was being spent over there in the budget.

Any Republican conservative who based their political stance on faith and morality should know that it was Jesus who said that "their are none good but the father". Paul, who wrote most of the new testament said it perfectly " the good that I would do, I do not and that which I would not do, I do". Humans might like to stand on morality but as humans are incapable of being as moral ad we preach. The lord said " I married to the backslider", not on the morally upright or conservative.

That's true Christianity and anyone who says otherwise needs to read their bible and, as we say to everyone else, wake up. The lord sees the hidden sins of the heart and mind, so let's not judge those whose are openly displayed for the public.

      Howie2g,

Another one taking scripture out of context and failing to understand what Paul was talking about. It had nothing to do with morals. Married the backslider? Your post seems to drift all over the place. Read the scripture in context and ask the Holy Spirit for discernment – you could really use some(discernment that is).

    • Howie2g

Why must I need discernment, because I read and accept the word for the word. Only ability needed is to read and faith. But to entertain you I'm sure you believe that one may recieve varying interpretations by scripture which leads to the vast different denominations. I read, accept and believe without over analyzing and adding my own spin or definition.

Meghan McCain wants to attack Bristol Palin, out of jealousy. Word was she bad mouthed other daughter's of Republicans in the past as well. Namely the Bush Twins. It really accomplishes nothing. Meghan is the diva of the Republican party. Bristol and the Palins would have been better never to have attached themselves with anything McCain. It will be the downfall of Sarah Palin. Nothing the left tries to do to Palin will cause her to break, but rather what Palin is forced to do to obey her master John McCain and her Daughter will be her downfall. Because McCain uses people for his own gain. That's why he tapped a somewhat conservative woman to run with him in 2008 when McCain is not a conservative.

The names Lindsay Lohan & Parris Hilton come to mind- 2 young famous, rich, 20 somethings who have served time according to holywood standards.were Meghans' actions the best, no. Neither were Bristols'. Both, in their own ways, have tried to own up for them. This what the basis of what opinions/judgments should originate from. For those of you saying Meghan is a liberal in disguise, so just because you don't agree with EVERY aspect of your party makes you a member of the "opposing" party? How narrow-minded of you. Why do her & her fathers pov have to match (or any other rep) to a T for her to be a rep? Diversity is a wonderful thing, embrace it.as far as headline, you're reading the article aren't you? It never ceases to amaze me how the Palin family is such a threat to women who are liberal and the McCain family. Didn't John pick Sarah Palin as his running mate? Did he do that to lose the election or to win it? Did she outshine him politically? Absolutely! This is the same man who has had 30 years to address illegal immigration and now that it is a politicaly hot button, he is so for it. What a hypocrit. So now Sarah Palin's child is not allowed to make a mistake? Do you think her Mother is proud that she had a baby out of wedlock? As proud as the liberals who think it is just fine to be a single female parent? I don't think Bristol chose that option, she was just not very smart. However there are a lot of young woman who choose to be single parents. At least Bristol took responsibility whereas most abdicate that responsibility to the government to help raise their fatherless children. Get over the hate for the Palins sheeple. Just cause you can't find them cheating on each other does not make them bad people

    September 11, 2010 at 12:42 pm | Report abuse |
    • JohnRJ08

First of all, Sarah Palin doesn't threaten liberals. She does threaten our democracy, though. Second of all, John McCain didn't pick Sarah Palin as his running-mate. Palin was picked by several right-wing conservatives, including Fred Barnes, John Bolton, Robert Bjork, Dick Morris and William Kristol, who all had gone up to visit her back in 2007. McCain barely knew her name when the RNC informed him that she would be his running-mate. The only reason he agreed - without knowing anything about her - is because he was told that she would bring out the Republican base. McCain knew that many Republicans thought he was too moderate, so he calculated that she would help him win the election. Of course, at the same time, he never considered the fact that a totally inept, intellectually inadequate person could have ended up as president if something happened to him. He would have been, after all, the oldest man to ever be elected president. Can anyone actually imagine the kind of damage that Sarah Palin might have done to this country if she had ever been given any real power. Too frightening to contemplate.

Meghan McCain, unlike her father, is honest and speaks from her heart. John McCain is a political creature who has a long history of shaping his convictions to match whatever will get him elected. The most recent primary in Arizona is a case in point. In the last six months, the man has come to stand against nearly everything he once endorsed. Why? Because he was scared to death of the Tea Party. No. Meghan McCain may have some growing up to do, but at least she's genuine. My guess is that within the next two years she'll announce that she's a Democrat.

She is NOT a size 8-10.I used to be that size before I lost 30 pounds, and she is wayyyyyy bigger than I was. And just because that's a few sizes smaller than the 'average' woman, isn't ok. The average woman is fat and overweight. The 'average' doesn't mean you're 'average'...it just means that the average woman is a glutton and needs to lose 30 pounds.

Frank, a little anecdote is in order. While judging a horse show several years back, I was priveleged to the following. A young womoan was practicing in the arena, and was prompty dumped to the ground by her large Dutch Warm Blood. (Frank, this is a specific type of horse) She re-mounted, was dumped, once again. This happened several more times, after which in full view of her trainer began whipping the horse severely. Once done, she re-mounted, once again to be un-ceremoneously dis-mounted. She got up, screamed n a pitch, that only a soprano in the opera could appreciate, "what is wrong"? Her heavily German accented trainer replied, "darlink, yuv only a vip, yu needs a 2 x 4. I can only hope that does not go over your head. By the way, what do you know about the LAW of ATTRACTION? That might be a far more intriguing subject? Bless you all, Randy

What is wrong with people. I hope all the pathetic people with some snide or vulgar remark about Bristol or any of the Palins are teetotaling virgins, with perfect families, who attend church and can recite the Bible frontwards and backwards (which of course is joke in itself, as anyone who has read the Bible wouldn't be saying anything like these things).
I think the only reason people hate on the Palins is because they really see themselves in this family. But – one thing may be radically different. This family supports and loves one another and makes no excuses for being real and honest about who they are.
If only YOU could do so as well. I admire the Palins and since half of most of the babies born in America these days are born outside of wedlock, I see no reason for the rest of you to be throwing stones at the Palins. Most of you probably had or will have a baby outside of marriage – whether you profess abstinence or promiscuity, a baby born is a baby born.
Just grow up and stop this.Unless you really have something intelligent to say, just save us all from embarrassment and humiliation for you and keep your mouths shut.

Only a stupid person would turn down that kind of fast cash. Even IF she gets kicked off the first week thats 200k. And the tea baggers will probably call in and keep her on at least a few shows before she gets the boot. So good for her.

Wow . .. ps the majority of the people commenting really need to grow the heck up. . . this is exactly what is wrong with our society as Americans. . . . we are spoiled little turds who would rather fight back and forth then get anything accomplished that matters to anyone. PS the republican ticket of McCain and Palin was the biggest trainwreck known. After much consideration the Palin family is nothing but rich white trash . . . i mean really her teenage daughters baby daddy didn't graduate high school and instead of working on her education she is running around talking about something she knows absolutely nothing about obviously in between being "modest" on dancing with the stars. . .i mean really isn't she just glamorizing teen pregnancy. . . hell i would love to have been a pregnant teen in our society today . . . glizt glamour, magazine covers fame and money. . hell . . .what kind of example does that show. . . it is all disgusting!!!! so instead of commenting on her weight, and lets face it American is FAT and that ain't with a PH, lets talk about real issues like why we have a semi educated girl influencing our kids.!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, abortion can be a solution. Rather than bring an unwanted child into the world where it may end up neglected, where the (perhaps single) parent(s) are neither emotionally or financially able to care for a child is not out of the question. It is a personal private matter up to the woman and/or husband/partner. It should also remain that way.

Now a days no one blinks an eye and yet Meghan can't understand why she was singled out for her behavior and dress code while Bristol who was pregnant, was not. Well, it's easy-now listen closely Meghan–which is it? Do you approve of out of wedlock women or not, you can' t have it both ways. As to your behavior, I find it quite possible that one's behavior and mode of dress could be a bigger issue than a one time mistake of getting pregnant out of wedlock. Apparently, Bristol has learned this lesson and I hope she continues to, but she seems to be a very polite person (as all of Palin's children are) there are no potty mouths, etc. Perhaps this is what upsets Ms. McCain the most. You can be a "nice" person and still get pregnant. Shame on all you liberals who can preach tolerance, but will pounce on anyone who isn't a fellow liberal.

@Sharon – You do realize Meghan McCain is a Republican, don't you? Instead of going off on a rant about how "liberals" like her have no morals, maybe you try to get the facts first.

@Maxreps I bet you are the one who looks like a troll. She is not fat. Meghan is about a size 8-10 and that is smaller than the average woman. People look bigger on camera so if you saw her in person she's not that big. I think she's gorgeous and you probably could never get a woman that looks like this and that's why you're so miserable.

She's a Republican, which is a turn-off for me, but I would make an exception for her in a heartbeat!

Good for her I won't have to support her with tax money. good luck with everything Ms. Palin. No I am not a Sarah Palin fan, no anyone who writes a book and bashes other's for sales.

"Jesuswuzzazombie" wrote, in this thread, that "She can at least write a book.....Bristol's claim to fame is being able to breed." This of course is thoroughly incorrect, and merely shows Jesuswuzzazombie to be "a total idiot". Bristol Palin's complete "claim to fame", that's brought her to the attention of the national American audience, has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that this lovely you woman was blessed to be able to give birth to her beautiful son ; What it ENTIRELY has to do with is the fact that she's the eldest child of the most recent Vice Presidential candidate of one of the two major American political parties. That's all there is to it. In the totally unlikely eventuality that Jesuswuzzazombie's parent might in the future be a Presidential or Vice Presidential candidate of one of the two major U.S political parties, then THAT would be his complete and total "claim to fame, not the fact that the complete moron known here as Jesuswuzzazombie could [as exceedingly scary as this whole notion sounds !] conceivably be capable of physically fathering a child.

I'm sorry, I missed the part where she was jealous or hating on Bristol. The only thing she said about Bristol is that the Republican Party's image consultant made Megan feel bad about herself because the image consultant was overcompensating for a pregnant teen (Bristol) on the ticket. Could you point out the part I missed, where she's hating on or jealous of Bristol?

How ironic that the people who jump to Britol Palin's defence are inevitably the same people who trash the younger sister of Britney Spears for doing the same thing. The greatest example of this is Bill O.

Meghan is the Paris Hilton of politics. Ditzy blond, marginally cute at best, rich parents, famous last name, but nothing else to offer.

@wilma morris – Please give specifics on why you hate Bush. My experience for the most part with you and other liberals has been that their arguments always boil down to "you people are sorry" and "Bush sucks". You can't say someone is dumb for not wanting the govt to take care of them. My mom just got billed for 60% of her recent $2000 ER visit because Medicare won't pay. Its a govt run system too...

The Time Bomb destroyed McCain's last chance at ruining the USA, after having to sit out for Prince Bush for the worst decade in US History. History will prove the Bush family and thier friends was by far the worst thing to happen to America since white man landed on the shore.

On the political spectrum, I'm about as far left as you can get. I loathe your "typical" modern conservative. My prediction is that Meghan McCain is going to emerge as quite a powerful figure in the Republican Party. I left the GOP years ago when it became clear that Limbaugh was representing the direction that the GOP was heading. And now you have Nazis and pseudo-patriots like Glenn Beck leading the way. Meghan McCain may be the reality check that the RP needs to return to the great party it once was. While she's got some maturing to do, even now I find myself compelled by some of her arguments. If I was in the GOP today, I'd get behind this young woman. I think she represents the future of your party, and I think a lot of people, including Democrats like myself, would support her.

Sorry, Donna. President Obama didn't cause he problems we're having. That is totally the responsibility of Bush and the Republicans. President Obama is trying to clean up Bush's mess, and is getting blocked at almost every turn by the Republicans. Bush is the one who stinks. I'm not thrilled with a lot of the things President Obama has done, but he is FAR, FAR better than his predecessor. And President Obama is a heck of a lot better than Mitt, Huckabee, Newt, or any of the other Republicans who seem interested in the job at this time. I'm just hoping Jon Hunsman Jr. will decide to run.
