Talk about an unbelievable admission - one time “American Idol” champ Fantasia Barrino has opened up about her shocking drug overdose just two weeks ago.
In a new VH1 “Behind The Music” airing today, Barrino confesses that she purposefully swallowed a combination of aspirin and sleeping pills to end her life.
She tells VH1, “I just sat in the closet and looked at the mirror and took all the pills in the bottle. I wanted to go to sleep and just be at peace. I knew exactly what I was doing. You can't accidentally take a whole bottle of pills."
You would think it would be hard not to sympathize with Barrino's disturbing story, but believe it or not, a lot of people are taking to online message boards to criticize her.
Some feel it was irresponsible of the single mother to knowingly leave her 9 year-old daughter, Zion, motherless. Others support Barrino, realizing that she’s overcome unimaginable life events and sympathize with her emotional fragility.
But, it is rare for a celebrity to speak out about the details of a suicide attempt at all, and the fact that Barrino is speaking out the day her album is released has also raised some eyebrows about the timing of her confession. So in our "Showbiz" flashpoint today we’re asking: Is she making a big mistake by putting herself out there like this?
Another huge story we’ll be talking about on the show tonight is Tiger Woods’ big divorce! After all the stories about the night Woods crashed his car into a tree, the multiple alleged mistresses and the hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren have finalized their divorce. Some reports estimate Nordegren may have walked away with $100 million, but considering Woods could be worth, perhaps, ten times that amount of money – we want to know if you think she deserved more? Let us know by voting in our "Showbiz" poll!
We’ll also show you something we think is pretty cool, and that's the amazing new covers of the fall fashion magazines! We’re big fans of the September issues of fashion magazines, but we’re absolutely loving the fabulous faces over 40 on the covers this year. We’ll show you the faces and bring you all the big entertainment stories of the day on “Showbiz Tonight,” live at 5 p.m. ET on HLN.
And remember, we're still TV's most provocative entertainment news show seven days a week at 11pm ET/PT!
