Sarah Palin comes to Dr. Laura’s defense

Dr. Laura Schlessinger – who’s been enmeshed in controversy over her repeated use of the “N” word during her August 10 radio show – has got a vocal new member on her defense team: Sarah Palin.

The Alaskan has taken to Twitter to offer encouraging words to Dr. Laura, tweeting, “Dr.Laura:don't retreat...reload!”

The radio host, 63, announced on Larry King Live Tuesday that she intends to leave radio after more than 30 years to regain her First Amendment rights.

“I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful, without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and attack sponsors,” Schlessinger said. “I'm sort of done with that."

And according to Palin, Schlessinger may be better off for it.

“Dr.Laura=even more powerful & effective w/out the shackles, so watch out Constitutional obstructionists,” Palin tweeted. “And b thankful 4 her voice,America!”

Sarah Palin is certainly proving to be less and less intelligent, her goal is probably famosity and why John McCain chose her to respresent "the will of the American people" by running alongside him, I can't say that I truly understand. In short, the American voters chose their government, why can't she just graciously step down from the spotlight ? This issue about Dr. Laura could just be another window of opportunity for Sarah Palin to gain even more attention from the nation. If Sarah Palin truly appreciates the 1st Ammendment she would have also commented, "tweeted" positively to those who exercised the 1st Ammendment, voicing their opinions. She seems to lack integrity towards a constructive, progressive vision for a changing USA and world. In short Dr. Laura discontinued her contract of her own volition, if she can't accept that her fellow citizens exercise the 1st Ammendment as well, that is certainly her problem. Some are commenting on sensitivity....if one thinks about that, who really is being "too sensitve" here ? If Dr. Laura had more intelligence, "brainpower", understanding of the 1st Ammendment, she would have taken this opportunity to really open up the forum, the dialogue and could have shown what freedom of speech truly can be. I hope these two "highlighted" women learn from this situation and the voices of their fellow citizens.

Bimbo Palin needs to shut her yap as we all know she has her head where the sun don't shine and if she keeps running her mouth it will end up full of you know what. Oh wait she is already full of that.

These ladies may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer, but neither was George Carlin when he first gave us the Seven Dirty Words You Can Never Say on Television.
And what about CONTEXT? I actually went and listened to and read Dr. Laura's comments, just as I did with the Shirley Sherrod comments to the NAACP. Dr. Laura's comments were not the "racist n-word rant" that the media liars are saying it was. I'm hard pressed to defend much that these people do, but I will defend the truth and accuracy. Where is John King, the defender of context (at least for Shirley Sherrod)?

The real concern here is not Sarah Palin or Dr Laura, but the the future generations. We as americans are still dealing with issues that should be far behind us, in the past!! However, because America has refused to deal with her demons ( RACISM been one) It continunes to raise it's ugley head. Why? Because we as a nation have'nt healed. Until each of us take true accountability for our words and actions, nothing will change. And, the next genarations will pick up the torch and continue this insane cycle of hate!!! IT STARTS WITH YOU! And, me. (At home).

I don't listen to crap so I wasn't tuned in to listen to Dr. Laura but can anybody tell me if she used the word properly? Everybody knows that you have to use the word with the -ah ending and not the -er ending. DUH!!! The -ah ending connotes camaraderie while the -er ending connotes hatred. Next time, she should use the proper ending and she won't be in such a pickle.

What's really crazy is Sarah Palin was so angry when Seth MacFarlane (family guy) had an episode with a retarded girl saying her mom was a former governor of Alaska, this same woman who is supporting this radio talk show host was offended because someone mad fun of a child and indirectly may have been speaking about her. How dare she say she stand by this womans statements and you can't even say retard next to her ohhh plz she's a joke.

I disagree, it does not belong in the entertainment section, it belongs in the garbage. Isn't Dr, Laura the one who criticizes Palin for haveing a "retarded baby" and going back to work a week later, instead of staying home & taking care of it, yes she did, her words exactly.

Interesting to hear Sarah palin defend Dr. Laura's right to use the "N word." It is equally interesting to hear people defend her "First Amendment rights" (which are not universal, by the way) or demand that society judge her intent, not the actual word itself. Where do you draw the line on "intent?" At what point can I use the phrase "jew down prices" or use any of a million other expressions that have long since gone into the dustbin of history simply because my intent was pure? That's silly rationale. She used a derogatory expression that is hateful to blacks. For that reason alone, she's got to go. Just because she meant well or because Richard Pryor or a rap star used it doesn't make it okay.

Well said. I believe you are correct that todays black youth that use the 'n' word carelessly may be far removed from the age where slavery and abuse of Africans was considered acceptable. In that respect, I am curious as to whether you think the continued use by certain African Americans does or does not perpetuate confusion for non-African Americans who are villified for using the 'n' word, yet hear it regularly enough from African Americans?

I think it is an interesting point and I believe that AA who use the term liberally continue the seperatist concept and add confusion to the racial problem. Can it be all or nothing? Do we 'outlaw' the word and no one can use it, or do we allow anyone and everyone to use it?

Let me say this as an African American woman who is conservative I do not use that word nor does my family. My mother who grew up in the civil rights movement is appauled by the N word. Whether black or white the word should never be said. As far as Dr. Laura she has not regret in saying it, she was arrogant and not senstive to my mother's era or their struggle. As far as SARAH PALIN I am disappointed that this "conservative christian woman" continues in her non bibilcal nonsense, you can defend the right to say it but I was surprised at her insensitivity that she thought it was ok. As a conservative african american woman who does not support gay marriage or aborition everytime I hear people like Sarah Palin who clearly do not want me in their party I pull the lever for a democrat. Though I disagree many times with democrats it is those who are like SARAH PALIN that when i walk in the voting booth as a conservative that I vote democrat. Most of my friends who are black 4 are doctors, all are educated a BA or more are conservatives and we are in a party that hates us and who defend actions such as Dr. Laura so every election time we don't feel welcomed. To tell someone to reload as Sarah Palin continues to do shows her ignorance. So who wants us NO ONE but the democrats....

In America you have the freedom to speak your mind. I tell my kids you can say whatever you want, but always be prepared to defend your words. Dr. Laura has the right to say the N-word all she wants, but her defense that because Black people use the word so we should be able to use the word is just plain stupid...especially coming from a Dr.

First of all, "ALL" Black people do not use the word. Most of us view the word to be offensive. Those who do use the word, particularly the younger generation, do not have a clue as to the origins of the word and are showing a lack of respect for themselves and their people. Many people have made milions of dollars using this offensive word in their music and movies. This only show how low our society will stoop to make a buck. The entertainment industry has all but destroyed the minds of both Blacks and Whites with the garbage the create. It is very embarrasing for me to see a young Black male/female using this word as a term of endearment. Know your history or you are bound to repeat it...

Secondly, Dr. Laura is 63 years old. She knows where the word comes from and she knows that it is offensive. Therefore, for her to assume that just because a few ingnorant Black folks use the word, this gives her a license to show her ignorance is again just plain stupid. Dr. Laura is a public figure who has been entrusted with the airways. She has a responsibility to the public and her sponsors and when she failed to uphold her responsibility she was held accountable. Remember....this is America you have the right to say whatever you want, but be prepared to defend your words.

Lastly, Dr. Laura should not hide her "firing" behind the 1st Amendment. After hearing her apology, I was ready to forgive her and move on. But after hearing her excuse on Larry King and attempt to hide behind the 1st Amendment...forget it. "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" Matthew 12:34 Dr. Laura only revealed what was truly in her heart and what is in the hearts of "SOME" White people. Whoever said that with the election of the country's first African American President shows that we now live in a "Post Racial" society must be on crack. This election has proven only one thing....America has a racial problem that runs deep in the hearts and souls of its people.

America is the world's last great hope and it's a pity that a country who has given the world so much, still can't find a way to live together under the same flag.

    1. Don't get caught up in abuse of, lacking of, misconstrued interpretation of one's First Amendment Rights.
    2. As an African-American woman who heard the exchange between "Dr" Laura and the caller, the caller should have known what she was in for in bringing her concerns to this woman.
    3. "Dr" Laura used failed premises in attempts to validate her argument. She was out of her element, and it would have been BETTER if she asked clarifying questions about how the caller viewed her husband and herself in the marriage.
    4. This comment is NOT in any type of support to Sarah Palin. "Reload"? No. But it's cowardly of "Dr" Laura to leave radio. Granted, 30 years is a long time to have a show and despite what some may say, she's made it this long. Even if she decides to leave, it's cowardly for her to blame "a small group" that seem to be swinging a big stick. Learn to duck, drop and roll on, but don't blame others if you get hit.

It really disturbs me to find myself agreeing with Sarah Palin, but the fact is that Dr. Laura was not engaging in hate speech. I wouldn't say she handled the situation like a champ, but 1.) she was clearly talking ABOUT the word itself – NOT directing it at anyone, and 2.) anyone familiar with her show knows that she pulls no punches and is not the type to sit back and listen while you get it all out.

I understand that hearing this stupid word from white people can be hurtful, but anyone who really feels strongly that it should NEVER be used AT ALL should be crusading for that cause in ALL situations – not just some. If you're not going to get up in arms about the word being used POINTEDLY in rap songs or conversational language among African-Americans, then it's ridiculous to take issue with a white person who is simply talking ABOUT the word.

And if you really feel that the word should just NOT be said, then where do you draw the line? What OTHER words should people not say? What should the punishment be? Who gets to decide these things?

I hate that ridiculous word and all the others like it. But this is America, and I don't get to decide what other people say.

Why do white people want to say it so bad? Her use of the word was not even close to hateful but it was beyond stupid, what point was she making? SOME black people use the word so all black people should not get mad when its said? Freedom of speech allows you to say whatever you want but it never meant that people just had to accept what was said and can't be angry. I can say whatever I want but that doesn't mean anyone has to like it. And if those who disagree with it have the freedom to say what they want. The word is offensive to a lot of people black and otherwise but white people just don't get that. Not all black people say it, not all white people saying it is bad. But its a hateful word. If you need proof of why black people hate it go to a Klan rally and hear them use it.

You really want to stop racism? Its simple.......Start raising your kids not to hate others of different color. That goes for blacks AND whites. But for some reason, people just want this issue to go on and on and on. Not one of you have ever been a slave or have ever owned a slave. How many of you are teaching your kids not to hate others of different colors? Not many, I see, since all of you are hung up on this 150 year old issue! Forget about these two women and start teaching your own kids right from wrong....and stop blaming others for your predjudices! Its obvious that CNN doesnt want to help the situation by always broadcasting these stupid people. If you dont like these women, then forget about them. Teach your kids how people like this ruin the country....and how CNN needs to keep this issue going so racism can continue for all of you to argue over and blame the other person! Go on with your lives.....remember, there's not one white person who owns a black person today. Slavery is OVER! What is it you want white people today to do about something that happened over 150 years ago? Name me one white person who is alive today that had anything to do with slavery! Name one black person that is alive today that was/is a slave! No one you say? And yet we cant seem to have any future in this country until something is done about it???? Sometimes I feel that some people wake up every morning thinking of sh## to gripe about. Thats ok though....lets just keep teaching our kids to hate, and you'll never run out of the race issue......EVER! Keep up the good work CNN on bringing this crap up every chance you get. Its really helping people of both races!! But I guess people are gullable and always need something to keep the hate going!

Dr. Laura's comments just goes to show how out of touch she is with the black community. The reason why so many African-Americans voted for Obama is because they're registered DEMOCRATS; about 92% of black voters are registered democrats. What were they supposed to do, vote for McCain out of fear of being labeled a racist for voting for Obama? And Sarah's so pathetic; as a black man I've always had a bad feeling about her and now I know why, and Michael Steele is nothing but an Uncle Tom for leading a party that would tolerate such behavior.

Honestly, I feel like the fact that Dr. Laura claims to be leaving radio "to regain [her] first amendment rights" renders any apology she might have attempted completely irrelevant. Freedom of speech is a two-sided coin – yes, it means that you can express yourself freely without fear of government persecution, but on the flip-side of that is the reality that the fact that, though you may not be subject to legal reprimand, you may very well face social consequences if you use that freedom in a way that offends others. To suggest that she is somehow deprived of her ability to speak from the heart when she is privileged enough to have a nationally syndicated platform from which she can speak is ludicrous. If anything, she enjoys a greater ability to effect change by exercising her first amendment rights than the vast majority of Americans, but that power must be wielded in a responsible manner. It is really just common sense that one can’t throw racial epithets around haphazardly when speaking in a public forum without running a substantial risk of offending someone else. What she is doing is no different from the brat on the playground who takes their ball and runs home when they don’t get to have their way.

As for Palin, the woman is a black hole for rational thought. I am so tired of the media thinking that anything this woman says is worth printing. She is a total moron. Exhibit A: In the midst of a media firestorm brought about by her repeated nonchalant use of the N-word in answering a question, Dr. Laura announces her retirement from radio because she is tired of not being able to speak her mind without special interests attacking her or her sponsors, and Palin responds by praising her for casting aside the “shackles” of her corporate oppressors. Tasteful.

this is similar to Imus in some ways – he should have never been forced off -the guy is a shock-jock -you can't treat him the same way and he didn't say it in hate, he said it in jest – there is a difference – same as any racial joke any comedian makes whether it is Chris Rock and DL Hughley who have done bits on this or its someone like Daniel Tosh or David Letterman.

you are more than free to disagree with her comments and how she handled and made the comments – but the moment someone says something controversial or is taken as offensive, their voices are silenced. The FCC isn't the concern anymore -it is their management at these stations.

People like Sharpton would rather silence the conversation than have the conversation or even a debate – to have an honest conversation about race or religion that doesn't come from an angry place would be a step forward in our country. Sharpton will come down on an issue like that but gets a pass for his anti-semetic comments or calling someone an uncle Tom? It isn't a fair playing field – I would rather see someone go out and make an idiot out of Dr Laura and ridicule her and make her look like an idiot in an appearance, as opposed to just trying to silence her by pulling the sponsors. Yes it is within the same rights of free speech to do that but it doesn't accomplish any goal other than quelling what could be honest and constructive conversation, opening up another forum that is constructive, or in this case using this incident to build a dialog and potentially coming to an understanding of racial dynamics in an intelligent way.

The problem that I have with her comments are not that she said the N-word 11 times like she has Tourette, it’s how she claims that African Americans for some reason only voted for President Obama because he was ½ black as if black people aren’t smart enough to choose a politician based on his views rather than his skin color. That’s IGNORANT of her. Has anyone noticed all the times Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton tried to run and African Americans did come out of the wood work to support him? She also said that since Pres. Obama has been elected that more blacks are becoming overly sensitive about race. It’s not that, it’s that the racist are being more open and letting the tongue slip more than ever. And as far as Sarah Palin is concerned she couldn’t hold down her job as governor so she quit, that’s EXACTLY why she/they didn’t win the election. The use of the "n" word by descendents of slaves to each other in a context that is not belittling or degrading is not the same as the use of the word, in any capacity, by descendents of non-slaves or any beneficiaries of slavery and segregation. It feels different, it sounds different, it lands different. That is the reality. And, on a bigger plane of thought, the people the word was used to denigrate have the right to decide if it is offensive or not and the people it was used to denigrate should have that privilege. White people in this country need to really think about privilege, the existence of it, how it shapes the world around us. Why is it so hard to let the people who are/were historically the recipients of bigotry have the floor as experts and the benefit of the doubt in discussions concerning racism and what’s acceptable?

Dr Laura knew the rules. She knew that as a white person, it's taboo to say the 'n-' word in public. She knew that there's an unfair amount of leeway given to other black people who use the 'n-' word in public. She know that a fierce backlash would come her way for saying it. She knew that such backlash does not exist when it is said by rappers. She knows that this is the way things are in America, and it will not change anytime soon. It's unfortunate, but there it is.

Having known all of this, the repercussions from what she said (repeatedly) are because of her blatant disregard for these social rules. She stirred up a hornet's nest and cried foul when she got stung. This is stupidity on her part, and she must've thought she could get away with it after all these years of getting away with her anti-gay rhetoric.

The woman who called in was on CNN this morning and besides being upset about Dr. Laura's use of the N-word, she is also upset because Dr. Laura never asked nor addressed in any way the question she called in wanting help with. Also she was offended because of a comment made by Dr. Laura that implied that the caller was trying to set her up in some way. The comment, if I remember from the interview this morning was something along the line of " Good Try". She didn't accept Dr. Laura's apology, or hadn't this morning. Freedom of speech is one thing, deliberate attempts to incite hate towards our fellow humans is irresponsible and should have consequences. We all have choices to make in our lives...actually our lives are a succession of daily choices...whenever we make a choice that harms someone else, whether physically or mentally we are abusing our right to free speech. I doubt seriously that our founding fathers intended its use to include bashing others because they don't look like, think like, or live like us...whether us is our country as a whole or us as in each individual. Apparently American self-esteem is so low that we now argue about when it is ok to degrade someone and who qualifies or "deserves" being degraded. how sad is that?

Jessica: You make some valid points in your argument and I agree that if the caller brought up the conversation then she gave Dr. Schlessinger every right to use the word in there discussion. One thing you will never understand however, unless you are black or a person of color, are the images and pain that the use of the word by non persons of color cause. Being oppressed and discriminated against in this country for your lifestyle will never equate to the horrors suffered by blacks for centuries here in the United States and across the world. The repurcussions of which we still see today. People try to equate slavery and discrimination here in America to the jewish holocaust but three times the amounts of blacks died during the middle passage and many more afte then they were enslaved, beaten, killed and discriminated against for years. That is what is conjured up when whites and other's who are not considered black people of color use the word. We all know what the literal meaning of the word means but it is not used to describe any other ethnicity or race but blacks. You will never know the pain and anger the word causes. Yes people have tried to state that their use of the word is a reclamation and for some it is. It has been used as a term of affection by some but mostly it is used in a derogatory sense even in the black community. It is almost a form of self hate that has been engrained and made acceptable. Your dismay however towards Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton is misguided. They both have led movements to ban the word and have come under attack by comedians, musicians, rappers and others who have made fortunes using the "N" word. I believe on this point you are very much misinformed as most people, especially whites when it comes to the use of this word. My suggestion. Reach out to two very old men born and raised in the deep south. One white and one black. If they will talk to you about it ask them what comes to mind when they use the word. When they bring up the images of children being chased and bitten by German Shepards, Brothers, cousins, fathers, sisters, involved on both ends of hangings, white robes and burning crosses then maybe you can get a sense of why it is not ok for whites to use the word.

As valid as your point is, THERE WILL NEVER BE EQUALITY WHILE ANYBODY GETS SPECIAL RIGHTS. The word is horrible, and nobody should say it. Still, if somebody gets to say it, everybody gets to say it. It doesn't matter the word, or the color of the person saying it. Society will never progress without equality.

That means if I want to I can use the N word, The S word, The F word, and anything else any sub-sect of society uses. Choosing not to is my path, but I will not suffer double standards. I don't believe anybody should.

That illegitimate term was created to differentiate the "black" community from the rest of society, which is the opposite goal of what that community has supposedly been striving for: "equality". It's an illegitimate term because: 1) as you said, most were not born in Africa; 2) a white North African Arab or white South African etc who has immigrated to America would have to be included in that group, which I guess never occured to whoever made the term up. So I now refer to myself as a EUROPEAN-AMERICAN because everyone else wants to differentiate themselves.

As an educated black man, I do not condone the use of the N-Word and correct people that utilize around me. Why do black people use it among themselves and get offended when others say it? Simply put, it's like someone telling their spouse their in-laws are insane and stupid and trashy. Your spouse can say whatever they want but when you say something, it's an issue. Yes it's totally a double standard. Even though I don't agree with Sharpton and Jackson on all issues and don't believe they're the voice of all black America, make sure you have your facts straight. Sharpton and Jackson came to Detroit with the NAACP about 2 years ago and had a BURY THE N-WORD CEREMONY. If you think it's easy being a minority and think black people, or minorities, are overstating their case.....Go to an all black bar, Go to an all black church, or go to an Historic black college campus. That uneasy feeling of always being watch and scrutinized and even despised by a few is how 'most' minorities feel on a daily basis living in America.

I find a theme in this society to be, people putting too much value in the words of other people, and little value on their own words. The minute any group, gets to say and do things nobody else can, it's not equal. Now, I'm not saying it's been equal all this time, but I always thought that was the common goal. No special rights for anybody. Period, just in case you didn't see the period at the end of the sentence.

Was Dr. Laura right? That's subjective. Do I care? Not really. If somebody I respected used terms I found hurtful, I might get offended. When it's a silly, pseudo celebrity saying things, I just can't be bothered. I seem to remember while growing up something many adults tried to tell me. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

You want to take the power of words back, stop caring about them. Put stock in your words and commitments, not people trying to keep dissension amongst the ranks.

No, genius. The caller was asking for her advice on how to deal with some her husband's friends (her white husband) who would constantly use the n-word casually. In response, Dr. Laura not only tossed around that hateful word, she told the caller she was being "too sensitive". The woman is trash and should have been tossed to the curb a long time ago.

I just read the transcript of conversation between Dr. Laura and the Caller, and I must say, that Dr. Laura shouldn't be allowed to give advice to anyone. I think she came off as a racist. It sounded to me that she was glad this woman called, so she could get her own racist views off her chest. The comments she made were not even relevant to the conversation. She turned the converation into a sideshow! No advice at all, just a bunch of dumb comments, and cheap comments about blacks, and why blacks voted for Obama.

To all of you who say she was simply having a conversation that is the biggest crock I have heard. Aconversation consists of two or more people expressing their thoughts through spoken word. Dr. Lousy only repeated a word over and over to rile up the caller without giving her a chance to respond.

Also, there is a double standard as with most things in this world. The "N" obviously has negative conatations but has somewhere turned into sort of an enduring word in the hip hop community. This still does not justify any person from a different nationality to use the word ESPECIALLY when talking to an African American. It's the same principle as you talking negatively about your mother, but as soon as someone else does who is not in your family-it's on like donkey knog.

It's mutual commiseration a way to tell the other person "you're no better then me". The word no matter how it's disguised is always negative. I would like to know WHY Dr. Laura would even want to use the word. Especially since she is old enough to know the history of it. So my question is (if the there was no resistance from the black community) How would a white person use the word??? or would said white person even want to used the word???

I asked him to stop but he either wouldn't or couldn't because it was a habitual word for him. I had a choice to tolerate him and the word or not be around him. He was a good friend (otherwise) so I just learned to tolerate his words. This situation is very common experience for black people.

On the Laura issue. Canada refused to allow her to speak due to her imflamatory comments against gays. That is considered a hate crime here. We do not wait until someone dies to call it a hate crime. We like to nip that in the bud before blood spills and lives destroyed. That the N word is offensive and hurtful is widely known and there is no excuse for using it. It lets us all know that she is at the bottom of the barrel in terms of having any class or decency. But then, she never has had. Only in America does freedom of expression mean you can curse out people who are different.

Sarah Palin may embrace Dr. Laura's use of that word, but I'll tell you what: Black people can use the n word as much as they like. They're born Black. They, like any other people who share the same heritage and background, may call themselves whatever they like in jest or in music. Just as Jeff Foxworth and his friends call themselves "Rednecks." That said, obviously, it would be unkind and insensitive for anyone who doesn't understand or share who they are to use that term. That said, my kids would be grounded for a YEAR if I ever heard them use the "n" word. I don't want them using it if they hear it in a song. We have NEVER used this word - even in our home or amongst ourselves. Not ever. I find the world not only ludicrous for people that are not Black to use because we all knowhow hateful and incendiary that workd is to people of color. We have no reason to use it. Not in any context. Dr. Laura was out of line and she insulted that woman. Having Sarah Palin jump into the fray to all but say that Laura has thw right to not only use that word but that its use is protected by "free speech" and that its use is American is as baseless and silly as anything else she has ever said. If anything, we should wake up to see how dangerous people like Sarah and Laura are: attention hungry, irresponsible and unenlightened women who should not only be unseen, but unheard if they embrace this kind of insensitive nonsense.

And why do you feel that you're missing out on life because you can't use the word? What is making you feel like your english vocabulary is not complete until you can use that word when speaking to black people.

Why don't you start referring to asians, and caucasians, and latinos as the n-word and see what type of reaction you get. And it should pretty much explain to you why it's not right to use that word for black people. Even if there are some black people too stupid enough to know not to use it themselves.

Pure hypocrisy. You'd never say that to a Jew that were openly called the 'K' word by nazis or anyone else on radio or provately. You wouldn't say just forget about it, their ignorant. Of course not.

I'm not sure I'm following – she's been on the year for 32 years, so it was inevitable that she would go on a long, offensive rant? I don't buy that. Plenty of people have long careers in media fields and don't do that. Only those filled with anger and hate do.
And I would hardly call what she said a true apology, it was just more whining about how oppressed she's been and how her rights have been trampled. That's not an apology, and it's not even legally correct, as her rights have not been diminished in the slightest.
Get over it...really? Progress is only made when people don't "get over" intolerance, hatred, and bigotry, but confront it and refuse to accept it.

Why wouldn't she be supported by someone that has the intelligence of a white trash trailer dweller yet feels it appropriate to claim she would be better at dealing with national and international issues than the President of the US. Dr. Laura didn't quit. She was forced out by the market place. Advertisers pulled their support. There was no where to go. Dr. Laura wades into these conversations with her foot half-way into ther mouth. This time she shoved it down her own throat and cried foul. Certainly she can take to the internet and blogosphere. I've listened to enough Dr. Laura to know that she would not have a kind, gently take on any of that sordid history.
Palin = irrelevant. RUSerious said (I thought it bears repeating) : "Do you all really think what DrLaura said to Jade was in any way acceptable?!?

Laura may not have actually called Jade a N- (though she did spew the word enough times to demonstrate she enjoyed saying it), and she may not have actually told Jade she shouldn't have married out of her race (though she did allude to it fairly clearly). What Laura did do, however, was to tell Jade that it was her own fault for feeling the way she did, that she was just being too sensitive and that she should either lighten up or shut up. Mike, based on your comments, and those of your supports, it's quite obvious that none of you have never been the object of racial, religious or ethnic scorn. So what would you know about it at all?

But it's even worse than that. Jade called Laura, a psychiatrist, for advice on how to deal with a distressing situation, one that Jade wasn't causing in any way except for being a certain ethnicity. But Laura turns the whole thing completely around and makes Jade out to be the bad guy (girl), and in doing so takes a nasty, cheap, racially biased shot at an entire ethnic group that has been historically persecuted. That's bad enough for just anybody to do, but when you consider Laura is a psychiatrist with a bully pulpit that reaches and influences millions of Americans, it's just unconscionable.

You and your ilk ought to be ashamed at yourselves for coming to the defense of someone in an indefensible position. Unfortunately, your demonstrated lack of intelligence makes that all but impossible."

Being black and having grown up in nearly all black lower to middle class neighborhoods in the 80's, I can tell you that in my personal experience, using the N-word was not common nor was it acceptable amongst my black neighbors, friends or family members. Even now, having a sizable circle of friends, many of whom are black, NO ONE uses that word, at least not in public. Many went through a stupid phase in high school when they threw it around, but they grew out of that sort of ignorance. But even during that time, I never heard a black person use that word to put someone down.

I personally don't care what words people want to use, but I wonder why people are so intent on being ignorant. I hear white people on TV and in open conversation throw out the term "white trash" all the time like it's nothing, but I can't for the life of me imagine calling someone that. And although I've no idea how my white friends would react if I called someone "white trash", I'm happy to never know because I don't plan on ever using that term.

The ridiculousness is idea of ownership and usability of phonetics and symbols. It is stunted to think that words can only be used by certain humans and not others. Or that words can be replaced by other words, for instance the N-word being replaced by using the N-word with out it actually losing its value. Why not use the damn word when referring the word. Or if I am not black, while typing this sentence would it be appropriate for me to outsource my typing to someone who is black to type the word for me. It is stunted, thinking the controlling of words and symbols. They themselves have no inherent value. Just the value that people choose to give them. I choose not to use some words, but reserve the right to be able to form them in my mouth and let them out, cause that is my right as an American. All words have equal value in the end, gutteral noises. The audience can choose to give them the power they wish to.

No what's ridiculous is resorting to the sticks and stones defense. We aren't 7 anymore. This is not about ownership of a word. No one owns a word. It's about you knowing your audience. And for the same reason you don't walk around an elementary school hallway dropping F-bombs because you heard little Johnny say it out on the playground, you don't use the N-word around black people. It's just flat out inappropriate.

If words were just a collection of phoenetics then why do we care about anything that's said? We should be ambivalent to it all. That's where your whole theory breaks down. The sad thing is you really probably believe you are making a strong point but you're not.

Okay, let's get something straight, let me educate you about the 'N' word as a black man myself. Your opinion has absolutely nothing to do with you trying to understand why you think black people can get away with saying the 'N' word, and others can't. The fact that "you" have to even ask that question is more than enough reason and proof enough as to WHY you SHOULDN'T be saying it at all! Personally, I hate using the 'N' word, and don't at all. Not every black person likes that word, and it's origins are every bit originated from colonialism/slavery and white supremacy.

Do some black people use it a lot, YES! Is it wrong? YES! Just because black people on HBO use the 'N' word does not automatically mean that all black people accept them or that word, or that it's right. No more than some of the ignorant actions seen on the "Jersey Shore" or the "Sopranos" defines the entire Italian race, neither do some comedians/rappers/actors/etc using the 'N' word for black people.

Is it a double standard? Yes, many times it is. So? How does that still make it right for you, or give you the desire to use the 'N' word knowing that you're not black? It may be hypocritcal for black people to use the 'N' word because of their ignorance, but you have to be a complete moron to not be a black person using the 'N' word, not having a clue of the implications! Why would you use that word as a white person and you know for a fact that you have no understanding whatsoever what that word means to a black person? Just don't use it, period. There's nothing you can say or try to justify to make that word positive in any way. It's impossible. You don't see Jews, Asians, and other ethinicities calling each other out on tv with racial slurs as if it's a compliment, ever!

As for Ms. Palin, well, in the wise words of Forrest Gump, "Stupid is what stupid does!"

James, good question. I think this is what should have been done with the caller on Dr Laura's show. Discussion. The Nword has followed African Americans around, and what they did was they took it out of the hands of the people who were using it and put it into our hands. And they use it the way they want to use it. When it is said by African Americans it takes away the negativity that the word was first created to convey. When non-blacks say it, it returns to the negative origin it began as, a hateful word that belittles a race of people. I think you have raised a good question James and I think discussing it is what many need to do.

I feel that she should be suspended for awhile and take away some of the serious money she's making but don't shut the radio show down. That's not getting at the real issue.

Although I had a problem with her using the N-word several times, she never really answered the young lady's question. If she's suppose to be helping people with problems, that was a stupid remark for her to make. When you love someone, it doesn't make a difference what color they are. Love has no color so she could have told the young lady to confront her husband about his friends remarks instead of saying if she's so sensitive, don't marry outside of her race.

This is not about freedom of speech! Palin backs the "sensitivities" of the 9/11 victims' families. Why doesn't she back the "sensitivities" of black–and all–people who are deeply offended by the use of the n word? To think she could have become VP of the USA and maybe even Pres. in the case of a death. Very, very disturbing. Yet look how many people voted for her. Woe is America...

This is exactly why the Republican party is becoming synonymous with hate and bigotry. People that are supposed to be examples and leaders of the party continue to back intolerance and act like it's not only acceptable, but should carry on. This is NOT a smart strategy whatsoever. I can't believe anyone is aligning themselves with Palin, what a horrible idea. Then people keep asking like their freedom of speech is being compromised. Hello, this is reality. There are no rules in media, tv, film, etc. that say you can say whatever you want on the air without facing a backlash and being held as accountable if you were face-to-face. Yes, you are free to preach bigotry. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. However, censorship in media exists (in fact, it's pushed by conservative Republicans themselves). If you say something hateful on the radio, it doesn't just affect your immediate audience (which can number in the millions) but also the lives and jobs of the show's sponsors, channel, and a trickle affect that affects the finances of all those who back a show. So no, it's not all about you. People have a right to weigh in, especially when there are financial investments.

The point of the conversation should be its not right for anyone to use the word. The only time heated discussions like this start is when white people want to justify using it because blacks can. In reality no one should be saying it including black people. Sarah Palin is ignorant white woman that most likely uses it in regular conversation. Her spot in American History will alway be stupidity.

I don't think anyone came down on her like she complains. The government or the FCC didn't get after her, so her free speech is safe. Sure,if McDonald's is your sponsor, and I don't support you, I won't listen to your show or eat at McDonald's...that's the way it's supposed to work! Of course she may say any words that she wants to say; I just have the right to be offended and believe that she is a bigot. She wasn't being a racist, and neither is Palin, they are bigots. If you want to use that word so bad, then go right ahead. I'm black, I don't use it, and I am offended by it. I don't care about the context, it's offensive what she said to that caller and quite insensitive I might add.
She wants to be able to say what she want without backlash, and that isn't what free speech is, it's protection from the Government. As citizens we have every right to listen and decide for ourselves. What she appears to want is to offend people and still have them listen to her show. She can't have it both ways.

Let's be clear about this – It is NOT ever acceptable for anyone to use the N word or any other racial slur (period). Just because a rapper says it-whatever – – – how many of us want pattern ourselves after rappers??? However, because of sensationalism, attention seeking, racists, thugs and just plain idiots, these words will probably always be a part of our society. You and only you are responsible for what comes out of your mouth. Do your part and don't use words like that. I've been around people who swear and cuss every other word and they always appear unintelligent to me – unable to express themselves in a complete sentence so they resort to cuss words.

FYI – I am black, extremely proud of my heritage and confident in my abilities. I was also born and raised in the Deep South (Alabama), I've lived in the Ghetto and I currently live among bankers, nurses and golf pros – so I've seen a lot when it comes to race and it's nothing new to me. I still chose to rise above all that. I'll call you by your given name and you can call me by mine.

Dr. Laura's biggest misstake was not saying the N-word. Her biggest mistake was believing that African Americans sit around all day using it like we're passing around water. I've heard people ask why there's a double standard with its use . . . . there is no double standard, there is an ignorance on your part to assume that just because comedians, rappers and someone you saw on HBO uses the word, its acceptable for anyone else to. Most black people DO NOT using the word in normal conversation. My friends and family don't use it and i'd admonish them or anyone else I hear using it. Dr. Laura tried to learn black culture from television and assume that it applied to all blacks. All black people do not listen to rap music, black people are involved in every type of music there is (Opera, Country, R & B, Gospel, Classical, Heavy Metal, Rock . . .) and we have comedians & actors that perform everyday without using the N-word. Stop generalizing!

"Don't retreat – reload?" This coming from the person who quit her job as governor of Alaska to go make millions spreading hate and intolerance? How would Dr. Schlessinger feel if some used anti-semtic remarks to get their point across? As for the people who don't understand why it's okay for blacks to use the "N" word but not others – where you born in this country and do you know it's history? The "n" word is a racist derogatory word invented by whites to hurt and categorize blacks. Blacks may use the word as a term of endearment and to take the sting off of it. Those of you who don't see the hate behind this don't truly understand what blacks have gone through. As for Palin, well what else do you expect from a person who's not very bright? You don't have to be smart or an intellectual to preach hate and divisiveness – which is what Palin does so well; it's easy. I thank God Palin will never be President nor Vice President of the U.S.

For those who have posted, 'the African American community needs to do something about the n-word,' it has already been started. Both Jesse and Al Sharpton, have said the word's usage should cease in the Afram community, ditto for the Urban League and, I believe the NAACP. So, there is an internal struggle. But, the most visible black users of the word are those who are making millions off it in an attempt to give them street cred - comics, rappers, etc. When money is involved, a complicated process gets even more complicated. I've seen a real dip in word usage among fellow African Americans in social settings over the course of the past decade. But, you wouldn't be able to tell that by what is broadcast. I'm confident Laura and Sarah are unaware of the internal struggle re: the word and are basically indulging in their lust for hate speak. I have no clue who Laura is, but Palin is a joke. I'm not kidding, I have NEVER met anyone who supported her and I ask all the time. I just want to have a face to face with someone that is so whacky they believe in this woman as a role model. Lets just remember the "N" word has never been used by whites as a term of affection, endearment or friendship towards blacks. It has always been deragotory, demeaning and used in anger. I don't like that anyone uses the "N" word whether they are black, white, comedian or a rapper. The use of it by blacks towards blacks is usually used among friends and in a manner that is not degrading. When it comes out of a white person's mouth it takes on a whole different meaning. Let's not forget where this word came from. Look at the history of the word and that may explain the sensitivity.

Seems to me, saying the N word repeatedly to someone who is obviously hurt by that word, negates this statement and "Dr" Laura is just trying to spin this in her direction. She's nothing but a bigot and I'm wondering about Paliln as well.

So, which words are not ok for hyphenated Americans to use? You know, the ones who have alliegence to other countries, like Africa? When they have only one country to hold their alliegence to, and thats America, then let them complain. Americans hold NO alliegence to any other country. If they cant say they're Americans , then as far as Im concerned, they can go to the country they hold alliegence too! PERIOD! And if this offends anyone, then tough sh##!
As long as they separate themselves from being Americans, this issue will always come up. Why isnt the question this....Why is it ok for some Americans to use certain words, and not for other Americans! Ever think of that? The only reason this is a race issue is because the word "african" is always thrown up in Americans faces. In my opinion, the N word should never be used, but to amplify the issue by using the word African is a slap in everyones faces. Why cant these people leave Africa out of the issue? Africa has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. Yes, there are racist in America, and some, believe it or not, are "African-Americans"! Racism will never die as long as people are brought up to hate others.....in ANY race...black AND white.

"Free speech" does not mean free from consequences. It means only that you will not be jailed. It's fine for Dr. Laura to speak her mind, but I am not surprised, nor do I think it is incorrect that there is a back lash from the public. That word is an emotionally charged one. Sarah Palin, GO HOME. No one cares what you have to say.

As a Caucasian liberal trapped against my will in the Bible belt, I hear this "n-word" all the time. It makes me sick and angry to think that in 2010 the world has still not evolved to the point where words of hatred, such as the aforementioned slur, have not been abolished from the world's vocabulary. Just for the record, that word is NEVER acceptable. EVER. No matter who says it, or in any context, the word continues to be a verbal legacy of hate and intolerance, and should NEVER be used. I'm sorry. i don't care who you are, or where you're from. DON'T say it.

As a 19 year old black woman who has been dating her WHITE boyfriend for 2 years and has NEVER used a racial slur in my life. I find it saddening that it is ok for ANYONE to use a racial slur. Dr. Laura is in the wrong to use the word, plain and simple. Just because other people use the word doesn't make it ok to use it. These are things we learn from growing up and maturing. My parents raised me to accept everyone no matter what race, and using a racial slur just shows that you haven't evolved. It saddens me that women like Dr. Laura, and ESPECIALLY Sarah Palin are in the media. They are not the type of people i would want as role models to kids. Racial slurs are not needed. Instead of worrying about why one person can use racial slurs while other s can't, how about we just do away with them? They are unnecessary.

I see your point, Claudia, and I applaud your att!tude. You are clearly a strong and wise person with respect for all. My question is just a philosophical one and nothing more: isn't there a difference between simply using a word and creating a racial slur with it? Just because a sentence has the word "jerk" in it, for example, does not mean that I'm actually calling anyone a jerk. I might even extemporize for a while ABOUT the epithet "jerk" without actually directing it at anyone. While I don't think that Dr. Laura handled this situation well at all, isn't it possible that her use of the 'n'-word might not const!tute a racial slur?

It just so happens that she is using it in such a way that she sounds like a hard-charging leader...and that's what makes her so dangerous. People without developed critical thinking skills or awareness just follow right behind her ambiguous remarks, thinking that their point of view is supported by her bs. And of course, if any of her ambiguous statement gets her in trouble, she'll just say that the left misinterpreted her comments and are looking to "lynch" her and "string her up". All this so that she can stay in the news and be relevant to less and less people.

The argument nowadays among many young blacks is that they are taking the word and using it in music and art as an attempt to give the word a positive meaning! How can my generation (I'm 28 years old by the way) take this word and make it positive when we can't even begin to identify with what our parents and grandparents experienced decades ago???

However, the history of the term is that it is hateful and racist. So I would think the ideal situation would be for no one to use it rather than a select group saying they own the term and can throw it around however and whenever they want, but no one else can.

Anyone who listened to what Dr Laura said objectively realizes that she did not use that word towards anyone and used it in the context of Black athletes and Comedians using the word all the time and it being acceptable to many in the black community and it creating confusion. She was making the point that some can be overly sensitive when it comes to race and this whole controversy has done nothing but prove her point. Now if becomes proven that she has hatred or intolerance of a particular race I would not defend her views, but I do not believe this to be the case.

I read the full transcript of that conversation and I don't understand how you or Izmer could anyway defend what Dr. Laura said to that woman. Instead of addressing her question, she uses her time to launch an attack on why people think there is there is still racism and just spews a digusting word around. This is NOT the action of a doctor trying to help someone. Maybe the caller had some inside knowledge that Dr. Laura didn't know that would negate (why do black people do this) as innocent questions. But she didn't care, she only cared about rating and frankly that's what we're giving this joker. In addition, this blog is really about Sarah Palin's support of her, which I don't think she has a leg to stand on considering how offended she was with the word "Retard". In addition, we can discuss context, but that was not an intellectual discussion on the use of the N-word, in was a charged rant at another person (I saw the transcript, the caller barely got a word in) so context is mute. It was unacceptable how she talked to that women. period.

      Paul,

I don't think anyone is really "allowed" to use the N-word. I'm black and I can't stand the fact that many musicians and comedians use the N-Word and there are many other blacks who share my sentiments in regard to this issue. Dr. Laura appears to believe that ALL blacks use this word and simply don't want whites to do so. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! All blacks do not walk around using this word, so people need to stop perpetuating this STEREOTYPE!! In fact, many blacks have dencounced the use of this word!! Using the N-word is NOT ACCEPTABLE!

I believe Dr. Lauras point was that it is hypocracy to tolerate black america using the word in "music", stand up comedy, and other forms of entertainment, while telling white america that it is an unspeakable word for them. It is either appropriate for all or inappropriate for all. Move on from your white guilt and your black sensitivities. It has nothing to do with racism.

Are you and those who replied in support of your post serious?!? Do you all really think what DrLaura said to Jade was in any way acceptable?!?

Unfortunately, your demonstrated lack of intelligence makes that all but impossible.

You are completely right. It's clear most the posts where people say Dr. Laura was spewing hate speech come from people who did not hear the actual audio of the call. The whole point of her use of the word was to point out the IRONY of how it is used. Amazing that the media has spun this into a fakeroversy and ignorant are buying it. That being said, I've never really liked Dr. Laura, I think she is insensitive to her callers unless they stroke her ego, but that doesn't negate the fact that her use of the N word was completely taken out of context here.

There is a tremendous amount of difference between Jesse Jackson and Sarah Palin. Jackson, for all his failures, has always spoken about enacting positive change, primarily through individual empowerment and community action. His voice would be welcome as we try to pull away from the cynicism and apathy that have taken root in political discourse.

Sarah Palin (as well as Laura Schlessinger) have been about negative change – stop letting the liberals run your life, stop whining, don't do this, don't let that happen. Palin does not know the damage she has done herself and, perhaps, that will prove a good thing as she follows Ann Coulter on the "push-my-buttons,pull-my-strings lecture" circuit. Schlessinger, on the other hand, knows fully what she has done and, while like Imus she will have her fans still, no self-respecting radio station or media outlet will have her again.

I do think the African American community needs to decide wether use of this word is unacceptable by EVERYONE. It is very annoying to hear African Americans getting offended when the "N-word" is used by non-African Americans but not one word is said when black rappers have the "N-word" splattered throughout their music and it is blown off by the African American community as artistic experession. Either the word is offensive or it's not. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I'm black and I'm not offended. I think it is being sensitive to get upset because a white woman uses the "N" word. I mean, black people do it all the time and it's supposedly ok because it means friendship. If it's wrong for one, it's wrong for all. Plain and simple. Niger is supposedly slanderous, but yet Niga is supposedly friendly. Niga is just a derivative of the original. Changing a letter on the end does not change the meaning behind it. So yeah, I'm black and I don't get angry about it because it's just silly to get upset when we say it to each other all the time.

      @Lisa,

Point 1: You are correct. Niger isn't offensive. It's a country in Africa.
Point 2: I seriously doubt that you're actually black.
Point 3: I agree with the sentiment that the offensiveness of the term should not be dictated by the color of the person who uses it. However, I think you've reached the wrong conclusion. The appropriate conclusion is that the term is offensive when anybody uses it.
Point 4: My problem with this whole issue is less about Dr. Laura's use of the word, because she did have a valid point about the hypocrisy in who can and can't say it (see Point 3). However, her suggestion that the woman was hypersensitve and shouldn't have married outside of her race was idiotic. Further, using the NAACP as a negative verb ("don't NAACP me") was improper. When you listen to her entire comments, it becomes clear that she has issues with race.

I heard the clip of the broadcast this morning. I have to say I disagree, in part. I am not a fan of Sarah Palin, but Dr. Laura's comments were taken way out of context by the caller and the media. She was not even allowed to finish her response before the caller jumped on her. She wasn't given the chance to make her point before being attacked by the caller. But, given how she then handled herself, maybe she is right in deciding to end her show.

As long as we as human beings and continue to make a gap between the black race and everyone else we will have bigotry. Why do I still have to pay for something done by people 200+ yrs ago. When ever you are weak, look for a crutch don't try and fix the problem. Point out the other guys faults, don't tell us how you can fix it. Condeming a word will not fix the problem.

As much as comfortable white people want to whitewash history, the racial wounds are still quite fresh. I had a classmate last year whose uncle was lynched in Mississippi because a bunch of whites thought he was leering at a white woman.

The N word was the least racist part of her rant. She hardly let the caller talk and vented her deep hatred of black people as if this one black caller was supposed to take the blame for every black person. Do white people take the blame for every white person? NO. Then why should black people. This caller had a husband that let his family call his wife a N word and did nothing to defend her, and "Dr." Laura was bad at the black woman? Wow.

JAMES – The "N" word is NOT acceptable in ALL African American homes. Don't assumed that because some African Americans use/say the word that ALL African Americans deem it acceptable or use the word themselves. I'm African American woman and it was NEVER accepted in our household growing up. My parents, both educators and grandparents who LIVED during segregation explained the TRUE meaning of the word and it's LEGACY.

I'm an adult now and still chose NOT to use the word in any form or context because I know the sacrifices associated to the word. I also teach my children and grandchildren on what's acceptable and NOT acceptable in our household.

Just like being a RACISTS is a LEARNED behavior and is taught at an early age, so does the choice of using the "N' word. Our youth today uses the word without truly knowing and understanding it's history. Majority of kids who use the word feel "no connection" to their own African American legacy, nor are they aware of the self-degraded reflection they themselves cause by using the word. To them it's "hip" to use the word, to call each other the "N" word, but to majority of other African Americans who respect and KNOW its true meaning, IT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE.

If you could take those who use the "N" word back in time to the days of SLAVERY, they would NEVER utter the "N" word again because they would KNOW the true meaning of what the word means in regards to the thousands of slaves who were hung, persecuted or burned back in the day.

We have a black culture today who have NO idea from which they come from, don't KNOW their family's history or legacy. We have children today who don't feel any "connection" to their past or their roots and don't CARE what their family's legacy is because they fell it does NOT impact their lives today. So they think......

I'm white and I'm offended by the n-word. Everyone should be – and no one should use it – but especially not on broadcast radio or television. The 7 words you can't say on TV should be the 8 words you can't say – and Al Sharpton agrees – so stop giving the Rev a bad rap on this one.

So we can't say the N word for fear of angering people while they use it freely. The first amendment protects against that but won't protect people laying their soldier, sailor, marine or airman to rest from picketers throwing words of hatred at them. Makes a lot of sense people. If you want 1st amendment rights its going to have to be a bit more open. Sarah Palin is turning into the Jessie Jackson of the Republican community...both are morons.

I despise this sack of human filth (dr. laura). However, she did not call a specific person or a particular group the N word. She was trying to have a discussion on race and the word itself, and it was the caller who initiated the discussion.

Dr. Laura allowed her elderly mother to die alone, adn her body was not discovered for many weeks after. THAT is worth HATING someone fore. Trying to have an open and honest discussion about race is not a valid reason to attack her. Her personal behavior and lack of morals is.

Besides, if the the black community does not wsant to hear us whities say it, no matter what context, they damned well better stop saying it themselves.

The reason it is okay for blacks to use that word about each other is two fold: 1) Because they are usually saying it like n–ga', which means "partner", "homeboy"; and 2) It's always more acceptable to talk about your own. Those hearing it inherently have a better understanding of how it's said. The black speaker can't mean anything bad by it because the speaker is also black. But it's understandably not as acceptable for someone in a different 'group' to use that word for a black. Especially because the historic use of the word by whites was always negative. In short, you can talk about yourself but be careful what you say about 'others' (or different types). It's really not that hard to understand the difference.

Those individuals who are attempting to "reclaim" a word that they don't like by using it in everyday languageI would love to hear them explain to my 9 year old kid why it's ok for them to refer to themselves as a N-, D-, F- or whatever, but no one else. Consider two brothers who fight all the time. They call each other names and even physically violent but the moment someone picks a fight or offends one brother, the other is there to defend him. If this still doesn't make sense to you, just quit analyzing the whole "N" word thing and just accept the fact that it's not OK for you to use it. You're too stupid to grasp nuance.

Most African Americans are and have been subject to systemic and pervasive discrimination from birth to the grave. Look at the educational data and other data resources available on line. Statistically, African Americans die early from the stress of this systemic and pervasive discrimination. Just think of the effects of a daily diet of attacks put downs and comments such as the use of the N-word. Some African Americans have embraced the N word to desensitize themselves from the onslaught. But we all know that you will tolerate inappropriate comments from family members that would be insults from strangers. I know of no other racial or ethnic group that is subject to the use of racist perjoratives like African-Americans on such a frequent basis. Based on the history in this country and continuing disparities please have empathy and tolerance. Using the N-word, if you are not African-American, is like shooting a man in the back or kicking him when he is down.

I find it interesting that during these classes and in every day life I have never met a black person that's not a racist when push comes to shove or when it's to their advantage. I've come to believe when people of color (all colors) begin thinking of them selves as a man and woman and not an African/American, black, brown, white, red or yellow then this nation of cowards can address these issues and move beyond all of this.

What it does not protect her from are the consequences of what she chooses to say with that freedom. Other people with the same right to free speech are more than allowed and within their rights to come after her because what she said has upset a large portion of the population. 2. With free speech Dr Laura can say whatever the hell she wants. As a public figure with sponsors who pay for her show, she also should be aware that if she alienates a large enough of the population that sponsors get uncomfortable, then there will be a backlash. None of her rights have been violated at ALL.

    3. Why do whites ask for "sensitivity" in the Mosque situation in regards to 9-11, something that killed a few thousand while at the same time saying blacks need to get over the N word, something related to millions of deaths through slavery?

    4. Why are white people so up in arms over her "rights" yet seem to not care about the rights of these people who want to build their mosque?

It is my experience that anyone who demands that one group has a right or privilege that is denied another group either implied or sanctioned by written law is, in fact, guilty of discrimination. In this case, to say that those of one color of skin may use a certain word while condemning someone of another color who uses it is racism. Those who condone such double standards are clearly guilty of racism.
