Yes, I did 'Real World'...Don't remind me

Don't expect to see Eric Nies or Heather B publicly endorsing "Real World: New York" cast mate Kevin Powell for Congress.

Democrat Powell, who hopes to represent Brooklyn's 10th District, said he wants nothing to do with his reality-show past.

"Notoriety is great, but it doesn't really mean anything if you don't actually use it to help people, and that's my position and that's been my position for a very long time and I'm 44 years old," said writer/activist Powell, who appeared on season one of "The Real World" in 1992. "I'm not that 25- or 26-year-old kid that was on MTV. I'm far from that at this point."

Sean Duffy, a Sarah Palin-backed Republican candidate in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District who appeared on "The Real World: Boston" in 1997, agrees, and refuses to address his MTV stint in interviews.

"People want to write on reality TV and you can write that story if you want. I'm not going to talk about it though," said Duffy, 38, who is married to Rachel Campos-Duffy of 1994's "The Real World: San Francisco." "That's nearly 15 years ago."

But "Real World" co-creator Jonathan Murray believes both men could benefit by playing up the days when they lived life on camera and discovered what it was like when people stopped being polite and started getting real.

Says Murray, "I think the very nature of being in a house with six other very different people than yourself and having to get beyond the very obvious differences between us and see people for who they are - I think [that] makes you a better person. So I think it is great preparation for someone who wants to be in government and who wants to represent all the people in the district."

Powell, for one, could certainly use a little help at the moment. The New York Daily News recently reported that he owes between $615,000 and $1.3 million in taxes.

I saw that season of,"The Real World" and pretty much most of the others. I think Kevin, like all of us learned some very good life lessons. That's what happens in life, life experiences teach us hopefully wisdom. Look say, Yes, I was a cast member on the season of, "The Real World New York", so what. Ask them have they seen what is being shown on networks such as, "The Jersey Shore"? You live, learn, hopefully grow as a person for the better and move on.

What idiots! "Real World" helped them launch their careers, and now want to bite the hand that fed them? Do they seriously think they would get the attention they have today w/out that show? Doubtful.

To be fair, Kevin didn't even seem to want to be on the show when he was on it. He was probably the least featured of the cast.

You don't have the luxury of running from your past. These guys should not just interview about their past they should embrace it. I, for one, would not vote for some dude who refused to talk about his past partucularly when they were 25 not 15.

Shame on him for not embracing his past and to be proud of what he has become. I remember the show very well and he was always very serious about his career. Who cares about what he owes or his political affiliation? As far as you know, he could be a Republican but is registered democrat. Does Lieberman ring a bell?

I used to be a regular watcher of MTV and remember both Kevin and Shawn. Both have gone on the live productive lives working unselfishly for others. Real World has gone on the become a farce – I wonder what strip joint Trashy Trishelle is working in today?

The Real World of 1992 (and 1997, for that matter) was far different from The Real World we see today. It's a shame that the current generation of cast members casts such a negative shadow of what was once a groundbreaking series.
