Boy George questions Gaga's occasional drug use

Former “Culture Club” performer Boy George has been popping over to PaperMag.com to blog “from time to time" (from his bed in London, no less), and the artist has recently questioned just how frequently Lady Gaga uses cocaine.

“If Lady Gaga were about to be exposed as a drug user I would understand her recent confession to Vanity Fair that she is an ‘occasional’ coke sniffer,” George wrote. “But why offer up this information on a whim? Could it be that her coke use is not ‘occasional?’”

Boy George, who himself has struggled with an addiction to heroin, said that he believes the word “occasional” can be more generous than one would think when you're taking about drugs.

His mother, he added, had the best take on Gaga’s admitted narcotics consumption, saying that "‘she’s reached the stage where she feels untouchable, you all get there - you did, son.’”

It’s an assessment that Boy George couldn't argue with. But while you’re debating what “occasional” could really mean, the Brit singer/songwriter threw in another question to mull over.

“One has to wonder how much of a grip Gaga has on things," he wrote. “Up until now she has seemed almost annoyingly professional and focused and this seems out of character! Isn't saying your an ‘occasional’ drug taker a bit like saying you're bisexual? That usually means you're raving!”

I met Boy George years ago in London – nothing to do with this gaga thing, but ....he was so nice and can do zero wrong. Gaga IS George (she is cool for now).

Pretty incitful from THE GEORGE. Hope he is doing better and the monkeys are not screeching as loud. Heroin aint no joke to fiddle with and neither is coke for that matter. I was crushed to hear Lady G claim to mess with coke no and then. Some of her stupider fans may think its ok to try out coke and get lost to us all. DONT MESS WITH COKE OR AT LEAST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF !!!!

Her political babblings no wonder she is for illegal immigration how else will she get her coke if its stopped no more mules no more coke. Yeah Ashley Simpson WAS a star until they found out she lip syncs and her voice was edited and soon they will find out the same about Dudely Gag me go away Gaga go live in Mexico they like you there!!

      Wow, what a moron.
For the record: even my soon to be 60 year old mother loves Gaga. In fact, she liked her before I did. I used to hate her until I heard 'Paparazzi' and the Fame Monster dropped. Now all I have is love for her. (I'm over 20, myself.)
As for her being a 'role model', she's admitted her problems with drugs before but she's a mature woman who appears to know what she's doing. She's a human being, not some deity to be put on a pedestal. But I'd say it's cool to look up to her since she's a great artist who WORKED her way up and calls the shots. She is no industry creation. But keep it in perspective.
"Dudely Gag"? She's a biological female, smart one. Even if she had XY chromosomes and/or a penis, she would still be a woman. Transs@xualism is a clinical condition. Look it up.
Honestly, I can't wait for the day when we do have a transwoman (or transman) pop star. I won't hold my breath for it, though.

Why is Lady Gaga's drug use even news? She talked about coking it up in Rolling Stone over a year ago.

As for Boy George, he's just a bitter old queen who hasn't been in the limelight for years so he feels the need to pick on a young person to make himself feel important. I could be all wrong but this happens to many queens when they reach a certain age. It's sad, really. He needs to get his ass out of bed and work on making a 'comeback'. (I am a fan of Boy George, for the record.)

Besides, Gaga is a grown woman who can take care of herself. She doesn't need anyone lecturing her.

Ironically, Lady GaGa may only occasionally use coke, but might abuse Heroin. Thereby, it still makes her statement of occasionally using coke … still true.

If anyone should know about drug use, it's The Boy. He sure has done enough in his time. Drugs happen to most of them when they hit the top, so not surprised there. George is just shooting it straight. I have yet to meet anyone who used coke "once or twice" a year. If it was that occasional she would not even think to mention it. With that, you can tell by her actions that she uses drugs... She will hit the wall, eventually. I wish her well when it happens and hope she doesn't kill herself in the process.

Every time a celeb from an older era criticizes a celeb of the current generation, a number of people will say they're doing it to get headlines. Every time. Doesn't it seem incredibly unlikely that 100% of those cases are attempts to remind people you still exist? People can be so cynical.

It is kinda scary, but I thought the same thing that George did...taken in the context of her interview, it is kind of odd that she just offers it up, sort of out of left field. Sort of like she was justifying it. I guess the question is "occassional" compared to what or who. Compared to John Belushi or Whitney Houston, perhaps three or four times a week is occassional...compared to me or you, once or twice a year is a lot. Obviously BG has no more insight than we do as to how or why she said what she said, but I thought it curious that she chose to say it in the context of that interview, not like she was being accused by the interviewer.

I think the real issue IS, when you have lots of money and you don't have a job you go to everyday and you like to party and be seen at the IN places, you are very likely to start becoming more than an occasional user. And yeah, acid is not even close to being as recreational drug as coke.

I can hear her now as someone or herself pulls out the bullet, "Now I just said I don't do this much, so you didn't see this happening riiiiiiiiiiiight? Tee hee...". I bet she doesn't consider a bump even use, it has to be a totally all night rager for her to call it "use"... Don't let this kid fool you. In the end it comes out, in a book or because it ruined her career. When one admits they don't have a lover of significant other when famous, it's because they have drugs/alcohol and friends who enable them instead... Just ask Lindsey.

He made more than enough $ back in the 80's & is still banking. He has always had a loose tongue & offers his opinions on anything & everything just like everybody else does. She is working an angle. The thing I find most astonishing about Lady Gaga's media dominance (drug-use aside) is the fact that after hearing her songs played ad infinitum on radio, her video rotation on constant loop on t.v. and her face plastered on every music publication, when it comes down to it, she's just making garden-variety dance music. Yes, I agree that Lady Gaga has talent with decent piano skills and a decent voice, but, her music isn't really moving 21st century culture ANYWHERE. It's almost like she is a litmus test how stagnant the pop culture times are. Unless you are 17 or under, if the public actually thinks Gaga is the greatest artist out there, what does that say about the public? The electronica genre has thousand's of artists in it's field, ALL of them creating a more "future-sound" then Gaga. She seems very "status-quo. Not hating, just REALLY puzzled!

An even more interesting take is GaGa is pro-amnestyfor illegal immigrants – yet her occasional drug use contributes to the narco wars south of the border which are causing many to flee here (right or wrong). This woman has blood on her hands. Anyone who does coke, whether habitually or "occasionally" has a lot of complicity in the murder of innocent civilians in Mexico, Central American and South America. That is not in keeping with her love and peace persona that she pulls out whenever it is convenient for her.

Outside of that, why cast shadows on the most exciting time in your life with a substance that is great while doing it, but leaves you only wanting more. Experience the moment, not the pitfalls so many others have fallen to in a meteoric rise to fame and creative work. Pop indeed, but creative nonetheless

Nothing like shameless pop star promotion of a highly addictive lethal substance!

I'm not a Pop fan, but I really like Gaga as an artist. I wouldn't buy her albums but the music and entertainment she does is great work. But she drooped the ball on this one. Not that she uses it , that's her business. Just to bother going on record as advertising it. I was addicted to cocaine for a time myself several years ago but thankfully pulled myself out of the glamourization of it in certain circles to see it for what it really is, a foul corruptive rotten substance.

If evil existed tangibly outside of the human mind and were embodied in a consumable form, coke is it. You just don't go around suggesting that using it ain't such a bad idea when you know people are going to follow your example. It might not be fair that you're required to set an example when you're famous, but thats kind of the trade off for millions of dollars to do art and be in the limelight.

I don't think he is making comments to enhance his career. This guy has been there and done that. Heck, for that matter I believe when he did go down due to the drug use, it was quite elaborate.

I think what he is trying to say, is that when people are all caught up with drugs their perception of "occasionally" is done with "their perception". Hate to be cliche but, it's like saying you are a little pregnant. Last time I checked, you are or you aren't...you can't just occasionally be pregnant. Perception to an addict is not the same perception to a novice.

As far as Gaga goes. I would love to see what she would be like without all the gimmicks and the shock value of what she does. Simply, get rid off all the synths, drum machines, and fixings in the studio. If you listen to her music, most of it is written in the key of C and stays within those 10 notes. Yes, you maybe a performer; but are you actually an artist?

    Just my thoughts.

How about that cat with four ears! Whaaat? You don't know about that? Now, friends, that's REAL news. Even Boy George likes cats! And Lady Gaga eats 'em for breakfast with cocaine sprinkles...

Boy George is taking that out of context. After she said she uses it occasionally, she defined that as "a couple times a year." As a fan of Gaga, I personally don't like hearing that she uses drugs. But then again, I don't believe her either. She's just saying things to keep everyone talking about her in the press. She's not dumb. And it is odd that Boy George is trying to make headlines using Gaga. Sad.

Why would you not believe her when she herself admits to doing drugs? That's what I call denial.

I would question why Lady Gaga insisted on dressing so–er, um–briefly when she interacted with the crowd at Lollapalooza? In the immortal words of Jay Leno when he grilled Hugh Grant about Divine Brown, "What the h*ll were you thinking?"

More importantly... why doesn't Boy George (who I quite adore) know the difference between "your" and "you're"? He gets it correct the second time. :)

If you are going to correct someone's grammar, I would suggest checking your own. BG may have gotten the "your/you're" distinction wrong:

"More importantly... why doesn't Boy George (who I quite adore) know the difference between "your" and "you're"? He gets it correct the second time..."

but there's also the difference between "who" and "whom", where you should have said:

"More importantly... why doesn't Boy George (WHOM I quite adore) know the difference between "your" and "you're"? He gets it correct(LY) the second time..."

WHO is the subject (or the WH- equivalent of the subject to the verb BE) and WHOM is the (direct) object of the verb ADORE. The two "WH"'S are different and signify two different things (and "doers"). Say what you mean and mean what you say...and KNOW what you're talking about (or KNOW about tTHAT WHICH/WHAT you are talking, to be more precise.)

Other than that, BG is right, and he speaks from experience (felony conviction for unlawful imprisonment due to drug-addictive behavior a life-long struggle notwithstanding). Grammar lesson over.

I believe, but don't quote me on it, that he is standing under a yellow light (or several). If you look at the light coming down onto his shoulder, you can see that it is yellow. Could also have something to do with reflection from his yellow hat (probably unlikely though as it is far away from his mouth) like when you were a kid (or one of yours) put a buttercup flower under your chin to see if you liked butter :).

I disagree...for every single addict who goes out of control, there are several folks who only use recreationally and have complete control. Not only have I observed that directly in my life, but statistics on drug use largely confirm that...with the exception of stuff like heroin, crack and meth. I've known quite a few occasional coke users in my time.

Not sure what you mean by 'fake', from where I sit it's called theatrics (or if you prefer – self promotion), and the gaga is simply trying to extend the attempts to shock us made by popular by none other than Madonna.

Whatever it is she does, it aint art (same applies to Madonna).

And Boy George checking in on the topic ... for those who are agreeing with him, remember a broken clock is right twice a day.

I agree exactly. My sister confessed that she occassionally sniffed some coke and she wasn't addicted. Once she got clean she admitted she was doing it several times a week, everytime someone pulled it out she was sniffing it. Anyone who says they occassionally use any sort of narcotic (heavy drugs such as acid, coke, heroin, etc) are full of crap, they're hitting it very regularly.

Why on earth she would even confess this to variety is beyond me. Her audience is between 7 – 20 who more than likely consider her a role model. No pop star who has such a young fan base ever disclose their drug habits publicly and even dismiss the fact the no less.

Well, see, we are not all weak-minded and instantly addicted. You may have been, Boy George may have been; that does not mean Lady Gaga cannot control her vices. I did coke, three different days in one week(I didn't really get much effect the first time), and those were the first, then last, times that I touched the stuff...this was like 2 years ago. Some of us can control ourselves.

@Joe – acid is a heavy drug like coke and heroin? A narcotic? Ummm...no. Totally different class. Read up, then post.

Joe- It is nearly impossible to use Acid regularly. Each time one uses LSD the body produces a near 100percent tolerance to the substance and that will last nearly 1-2weeks.

No one is "addicted" to coke after "one line". That is a bunch of just say no hysteria. Addiction is a physical condition. The body has become habituated to a substance to the extent that removal of that substance causes a physical withdrawal response. You may have an addictive personality, enjoyed your fist line so much that you continued using until you reached the point of physical dependancy (addiction), but to say you were addicted after one line is simply false. In your case, due to your personality type, it is likely that you become "addicted" to anything that you enjoy greatly. Could have been coke, could have been candy bars. Some people can actually use coke (or candy bars) occasionally with little or no harmful effects.
