Forget all those screaming teenage girls – Zac Efron just might have his biggest fan in Tom Cruise.
In the September issue of Details magazine, Efron, 22, recalls an incident in which Cruise, 48, flagged him down in the lobby of the CAA talent agency and invited him to hang out.
"You ride motorcycles?" Cruise asked. When the “Charlie St. Cloud” star admitted that he didn’t, the "Top Gun" actor replied, “You wanna learn how?”
And so they made a date to hang at Cruise’s pad, where Efron went riding, was taught how a bike’s engine works and got a peek at the superstar’s impressive motorcycle collection – including the Triumphs he rode in the “Mission: Impossible” flicks.
As for why he thinks Cruise took him under his wing, Efron tells Details, “I don’t know. I don't even want to know. It's just so cool that he gave a [expletive], the fact that he cared at all. No one else did that."
Speaking of giving a [expletive], it sounds like Efron wouldn't mind if he gave less of one sometimes...a bit like Shia LaBeouf.
"I’m so jealous of that,” Efron said of the actor's attitude, although he doesn’t know LaBeouf personally. “Yeah, that’s awesome to not give a [expletive]. And Shia still pulls it off. That’s so cool. It’s just awesome. It just comes easy to some people.”
One thing that didn't come very easily for Efron, however, was calling up Kenny Ortega to turn down a role in a remake of "Footloose."
“[A]ll the things I loved about 'Footloose' I couldn’t find in the project," Efron explained. "They just weren’t there. I couldn’t see myself doing it. I love Kenny (Ortega) with all my heart, it was literally the hardest phone call I’ve ever made.”
When it comes to his love life, Efron - who is still dating fellow former "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens - said that while other guys may enjoy playing the Hollywood field, he's not like that.
"Believe me, I rack my brain thinking ‘Why am I not out there playing the field?’ One of my buddies was like, ‘You have no idea what’s going on right now. You’re peaking on Ecstasy and you’re watching TV.’ But it’s not in my heart," Efron said.
His relationship with Hudgens, he added, is "exactly how it should be. It’s real.”
