I am 49 years old, I enjoy a good entertainment as much as the next person, and I always thought that people enjoyed music, dance, comedy and drama for what they actually are: ENTERTAINMENT, that entertains, so why this tendency to over analyse something that is so particular and individual such as taste. Having said that, I freaking love Lady Gaga, as I loved Madonna when she appeared, with the difference that more talented or less talented Madonna was a ground breaking female star, and any respectable female performer nowadays is inspired by her. Thank you very much!!!

Very well said! I am 43 and never heard any of her music until a month ago, now I am hooked! I totally respect other's opinions (good and bad), but in my opinion she is a true ARTIST. I respect and applaud her creativity and her ability to entertain. It may not appeal to some people, true. The people that call her a freak just do not appreciate ART. She writes her own music, plays the piano and has a vision like no other when it comes to her costumes. I feel the same about Annie Lennox, one of the most talented entertainers EVER.

If you've ever listened to one of her cd's she actually has some normal sounding music that is really good. All of her famous songs you hear a lot are over the top and crazy, but she also sings ballads and things you can enjoy when you're not on a dance floor. A few songs I love are "Speechless" "Brown eyes" "Teeth" and "dance in the dark". Dance in the dark may be more upbeat, but it's something I'm sure a lot of people would like.
Say all you want about her but she is like any actor or president...she gives people what they want. If everyone ignored her she would go away but society needs someone to either admire or loathe. Watch her acoustic performances and there is no doubt about her talent but the more people demand from her, the stranger she'll get. Actually, the same people that criticize her are most likely Michael Jackson fans. Now there was someone to look up to...:)
Wow, so many strong opinions! She writes her own songs, all of which I adore as do most people (so the charts say). Her purpose is to create music and entertain as many people as possible. Damn good job so far! I love her and hope more people take advantage of our freedom to make as much money as we want wearing as wild (or as little) clothes as we want!
She is a shock/pop artist. She conjures up an image of a female version of Alice Cooper(the original shock rocker not Marylin Manson) singing techno-pop instead of hard rock. Because she is female and prettier than Alice Cooper she is more of a pop sensation. Her fame will not last anywhere near as long as Cooper unless she starts writing songs that have some emotion and arent all about using annoying antics to stick in peoples brains like barnicles. Her music sounds very superficial to me. She has talent but lacks the intelligence and depth to do something great with it. She would rather have the brightest 5 minutes ever supported by musically ignorant youngsters than amaze people of all ages. She could easily outrock any of the newcomer wanna be rock bands but she wastes her vast creativity on this unemotional useless commercial pop. Gaga take all of your audaciousness (which is a gift) and put it in the sound of your music not just lyrics and "on camera" shenannigans and the world will be reminded of what creativity is....I hope you read this!! I saw Alice Copper in 2009 as well as Alice in Chains and Daughtry(a friend talked me into that joke of a show);Ive also seen Ozzy twice,AC/DC,Aerosmith and kiss and nothing came close to the showmanship of Alice Cooper and he is over 60 freakin years old....you have a long way to go GAGA!! but your more capable of greatnest than any new artist Iv'e seen in the last 16 years.

Y'know, all I gotta' say is that whether or not Lady Gaga is crazed, a druggie, or an extremely calculated commercial success, you can't deny the impact that she's had and it's incredibly unfair to insult the people who do like her by calling them cattle. It's all been done, yes. But it's all been done for centuries. Not much of Shakespeare's work was original, but it all depends on context. I wasn't very fond of Gaga, but she's grown on me and I've become fond of the music. People have attacked her for 'copying' Madonna when she's paying tribute to someone who inspired her. It's all a matter of how you want to see it. Again, it's not right to insult people for where they get their inspiration and fun. My mom gets inspired by Lifetime reruns and my dad from golf. My sister enjoys training animals and working on cars. I like color, simple wit, and explosions (which is why I like Luis Royo and video games).
I guess the simple thought is that when I hear "Alejandro", "Poker Face", and "Paparazzi", I wiggle in my seat. I ENJOY it. I'm not a pop-guppy. I listen to alot of different things, and my playlist includes "Por Ti Volare" (Bocelli), "Lux Aeterna" (Requiem), "Rise" (Origa), etc. Only thing I don't like is rap. But, frankly, for me, Lady Gaga will always be a thousand times more entertaining than Elvis. So it makes sense that I bought Ale, Poker, and Razzi for my iPod, and those that like Elvis got their Elvis songs. Why all the hate?
More exciting than Elvis? Okay, that's where people lose me. She has only made one album and seems to only been known for a couple of hit songs. For all her talent, creativity, and potential, I honestly can't understand why people compare her to the likes of legends. Maybe after 3-5 successful albums down the line, I could understand the massive hype and the pretentious statements, but at the moment, it is pure hyperbole. She is a pop star and entertainer, and she does it well. Her songs are catchy, but please, no matter how obsessed you are with the woman you can't tell anyone that she has the same kind of music in the likes of all these idols that everyone compares her to. Her music is catchy, pop drivel, 10 years time nobody is going to really care about "Poker Face" and "Paparazzi." Wait and see where she is five years later, THEN say that she is more exciting than Elvis, until then, seriously, why can't she just be taken for what she is instead of being idolized for what she just isn't at at this point of the game.
I can see why people like Gaga: her songs are catchy, the costumes are fun, her performances are top notch, and she kind of takes this self-important gimmick she's got going and makes it her own. Most of all, she is talented. What I don't get is why everyone is so worked up over her and worshipping her like she's some God. She has only released one real album, an album that is more or less, if it weren't for Gaga's persona, would be long forgotten. It's rubbish. As of now, I hear more people talk more about what she's wearing next or what weird thing she said last week instead of her music. If she wants to be taken seriously, she needs to eventually create music with substance that would both showcase her talent and bolster the "weird" persona that she's trying to shove down our throats. Otherwise, for all her talent, she may be a flash in the pan if she doesn't learn to act more human instead of this over the top persona, looking and acting like a weirdo can only get you so far. It has already taken her very far, it can't really get any higher than this.

Seems like a lot of people get upset over well nothing. This person I find attractive and very amusing. I like the odd stuff she wears cause to be frank I can go out and see people dressed "normal" day in and day out and it's dull to be frank. My take? I don't understand the mania just yet. She may be talented and she may yet turn into an artist of substance. However, as of right now, she's only got one real album out. I don't understand why people are tripping over themselves to show her so much love yet. I can't believe people are willing to give $175.00 per ticket to someone based on only a handful of songs. I don't get it. I refuse to buy into the hype. If she's still around in a few years and has put out a few more albums that people like, then maybe I'll understand. Right now? No. All she's got right now is a handful of songs and a whole lot of costume changes. She's smart enough to have figured out that in this media-obsessed age, you've got to force people to look at you. Well, she has definitely grabbed the spotlight. She won't let go, though, not even for a minute. Her whole "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!" routine is already a bit trying, in my opinion. I don't want to see Lady Gaga doing some new kooky thing every single day of the week. Her best bet? To be taken seriously by everyone, fans and haters alike, is to write some new good songs and play them live while cutting back on the constant "in your face" thing she's got going on now. Don't feel compelled to come up with some crazy new look for every day of the week. You don't need to always look like the crafts store blew up while you were in it! Take a cue from Elton John–cut back on the parade of crazy outfits and just concentrate on the music. Because right now she does look like the "flavor of the week," the thing the public's focused its ever-wandering eyeballs on. She's a little substance but she's mostly style. That will only go so far. Thus far, she deserves more credit for her visual aspects than for her music. That's got to change.
I totally agree with you 100%. She is talented, but let's face it, her claim to fame is more so about her style and the way she dresses, not so much for her music. I don't understand the hype over her music. It is just typical pop dance music with absolutely no substance, but because Gaga dresses in outrageous costumes and says kooky things, it makes people assume that she is an artist with substance. I just hope in the future she will translate all of that creativity into showing the world that she's not just another Madonna/Elton John knock off, but an artist with substance with the music to back it up. Enough with the theatrical, self-indulgent, "little monsters" act, it is getting so old and just really doesn't give her talent justice at all.

I read as many of these as I could before I felt truly angry. Look, she is more talented than any of you and while her style is not for everyone she is really a very good song writer, who gives a voice to people who have, by a society full of conformist, been made to feel "less than." She is interesting, and let's face it: most of you are not and will not be remembered so get off your high horses.

Everybody makes their own creativity, isn't that the catch of being creative? Doing what you want, regardless of what people, think, say or do? Some become "artists" for their creativity and of course criticism comes with the job, but to hate/dislike someone on what they look like or dress like is purely a racist ideal. She is an artist, that's all, and a popular one nonetheless.

I love her. I think she's a one of kind superstar that reflects the open and creative culture that is embraced by most of Gen Y. Everyone needs to get used to celebrities embracing their freak flag because as far as I can tell most of Gen Y seems very comfortable ridding our culture of useless social stigmas and cultural barriers. I'm 50 plus years old, Ive seen The Who, The Peppers,GnR more than once same with AC/DC,Tom Petty, and on and on. This seems like a very talented young lady as well as interesting taks on things, seems to mean no harm to anyone, as Kris Kristofferson said " if you dont like hank williams honey you can kiss my @ss" the moral being dont listen or bpay attention if its not your cup of tea. You Gaga bashers are so out of touch. She's all about the show– the game– the burlesque. If you don't understand this concept, then don't comment– you don't get it. Re comparisons to Madonna, she out-Madonnas Madonna ten-fold. Madonna had shticks that she kept for months at a time– boustier (sp?), MM persona, etc.– whereas Gaga presents totally different at every venue, with a highly unique, flamboyant, outrageous persona each time. I'm by no means the #1 fan of Lady Gaga, but it's hard to deny how influential she's become in today's society. She definitely voices/reflects a lot of the sentiments of the younger and emerging generations. I'm almost positive that most of the angry/rude comments on this article come from an older demographic bitter by the fact that they're being replaced by a younger generation with a different mentality and way of life. I'm by no means saying that Lady Gaga and her comments fully reflect every single young adult, but there are some parallels between her and this rising liberal generation.

I saw her in concert last week and she worked her butt off for two hours and put on a heck of a show. She loves her family, travels with one of her parents at all times, and gives back tons of money to her foundation that helps homeless LBGT teenagers whose lousy parents threw them out of the house. I saw Lady GaGa in concert last week...it was like seeing a play and a concert all in one! She is an amazing performer.....and if you have seen any of her interviews on TV, she is very down to earth and almost normal!!! She knows that being an artist means that you entertain people....this is how she has chosen to do it. You don't have to love her, but you must respect her for performing for us and letting us see her talent. Go on youtube and listen to her song "Speechless" or "You and I".......you will see a whole different side of her with each song she has written. Please people, don't judge what you don't understand. However, Madonna (who did it first) does sometimes go back to being just a human being (like her most recent appearance on Letterman). GaGa, though, apparently feels she can't be seen by the public without doing something totally outrageous. I don't understand the constantly referencing of Madonna as talented. Madonna did the exact same thing with LESS talent. she does not/did not ever writer her own music. She has pretty much always taken other peoples songs and sang and danced to them. Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, etc. are all doing the same thing. The difference is (I believe) that Lady Gaga writes most if not all of her own music. Madonna and Lady Gaga are using the "shocking" and somewhat off kilter perspective on the world as a way of "marketing" themselves .. nothing more ... nothing less. I'm tired of people saying she has no talent. She does have talent, she is a very acomplished songwriter and pianist. But the majority of her songs before the "Gaga" phase were things that appealed to people in Europe, especially places like France and Germany. That stuff doesn't sell well here so she changed it up and created "Lady Gaga." So obviously she has the talent because she changed her entire repotior (sp?) without a hitch. Many of the songs you hear started off as more "highbrow" concert pieces that did well overseas and changed to excite the youth and comnsumerists of America.

Dude, it's all an act. That's all it ever was. She knows how to constantly make headlines with her statements, her fashion, her demeanor. All that equals butts in the seats and record sales. And it's WORKING. She's a gazillionaire. She's the Madonna of our age and the current queen of pop.

Marco, not sure how old you are but over 40 years ago there was another flamboyant performer who did over-the-top things, wore outlandish costumes and constantly said outrageous things. He was obviously gay though never really said so (the times and all). He was a piano virtuoso but chose to ham it up on schmaltzy tunes to please a mass, low-brow audience. He took a lot of heat from high-brow types and snarky comments in the press. And no, it wasn't Elton John. When once asked about how he "felt" about the criticism, Liberace replied, "oh I'm crying...crying all the way to the bank." Fast forward through the years and you get Elton, Madonna and now, this trollop and a hundred lesser wanna-bees. Some have real creative talent, some don't but have simply got the shtick down pat.
Other comments here have it right. The whole shtick is a calculated formula and commercial strategy to sell to another generation of young people who fancy themselves fiercely individualistic but are in fact part of a lowing herd. There is nothing so conformist as an "individualistic" youngster, and not so young youngsters in our culture these days, and if you can find a formula to appeal to a segment of them you will get rich. The best kind is that, like Gaga and her predecessors, allow the person to flatter themselves that they're rebelling and breaking away when they are really just filing into the cattle chute with all the rest.

Whoa, whoa, wait a minute! Have you actually seen her perform live? Why is Lady Gaga such a unique talent in today's shyte, computer-simulated music industry?
1. Lady Gaga can sing. Really well. And without the need for computers in the studio to fix inaccurate intonations (off-key singing). Just download her live SNL performance - this is no Ashlee Simpson lip sync'ing no-talent, wannabe.
2. Lady Gaga actually plays an instrument: The piano. Really well. Not just a couple of chords but this woman actually knows what she is doing.
3. Lady Gaga backs up her talent with true Vaudevillian showpersonship. She has the panache of Madonna but with much more than average talent (sorry, Madge).
I will go as far as to say that Lady Gaga is not the Madonna of her generation, she is the Elton John of her generation!
