Move over “Gossip Girl,” there’s a new teen drama in town.
“Pretty Little Liars,” which could pass for the high school version of “Desperate Housewives,” has quickly gained recognition for its action-packed episodes and dynamic characters, like bisexual Emily Fields, played by 23-year-old Shay Mitchell.
“I love 'Gossip Girl,' but 'Pretty Little Liars' is a lot more relatable in the sense that I think we're more like everyday American girls. … [The show] deals with issues that I think a lot of people are going through, especially my character,” Mitchell told Parade.
Though Mitchell said she’s different from her character in so many ways, she’s enjoying the journey.
“From her wardrobe, being so sporty and competitive, and even with her sexuality,” Mitchell said. “I was just so proud that ABC Family is putting a character like this on TV, who's not in one category or the other. It's been a gray area to try to figure herself out, so I thought that was very cool.”
But teens aren’t the only ones tuning in to ABC Family on Tuesday nights.
“It's been great to know that the age groups watching the show are all over the map. We're getting an older audience that I wouldn't have expected in the beginning,” she said.
In fact, “Pretty Little Liars” is doing so well that ABC Family ordered an additional 12 episodes for season 1.
“If we go into college, that's great,” Mitchell said. “We've only scratched the surface of each of these characters. I think there's so much more to learn and to go through with them. So I'm saying sure, let's do a musical, let's do college. I'm so ready. I love the character I play, I'm excited to see where the writers will take her.”
