Melissa Rycroft Strickland is pregnant

Getting publicly dumped by Jason Mesnick on “The Bachelor” last year just might have been the best thing to happen to Melissa Rycroft Strickland.

Not only did she go on to marry her true love after Mesnick took back his marriage proposal, but now she’s also expecting a baby.

“It was a shock. We weren’t even trying,” the 27-year-old, who wed insurance agent Tye Strickland in December, told Us Weekly of her pregnancy. "He wanted the kids right away, and I was laughing at him going, 'No, not ready!'"

Now that the couple is expecting a bundle of joy in February, they couldn’t be more thrilled. "He's actually cried more than I have," Rycroft Strickland said of her 29-year-old husband. "Tye is caring, he's funny. He's going to be a great dad."

Rycroft Strickland has already started eating for two - craving everything from sushi to submarine sandwiches - but she isn’t worried about losing the fit figure she famously showed off while competing on “Dancing With the Stars” last year. "Knowing me, I'm going to swell and gain 90 pounds," she said. "But it's not about me anymore!"

Indeed, now it’s all about baby. "It's the most wonderful surprise in the world," Rycroft Strickland said, who will co-host ABC’s “Bachelor Pad” in August. "It's such a blessing."

Congratulationans and may you go on to have a helathy and happy baby.
    Now comes my criticism :
Why is that women think you need to eat for two? Its actually One portion for you and then an itty bitty portion for the itty bitty baby. You are not delivering an adult to eat two adult portions.
Ladies, stop gorging yourselves during pregnancy. This is the worst genetic imprint you can give to your offsprints.
Mothers on lean food, Low carbs , Balanced nutrition and plenty of exercise tend to deliver healthy babies via natural methods instead of induced c-section. These babies also grow on to also become healthy . Look at historical trends of moms by races who eat a certain food and how their children grow up.
Many latin / black moms / or southern white /black women eating a high card food of potatoes , meat , gravy, corn etc are popping out more chubby babbies and these babbies grow to be chubby and the cycle repeats again and again.

So Mrs Melissa Rycroft Strickland, Stop saying stupid stuff that iit is not about you. Yes it is about you since you cant control your gluttony. Also your gluttonious consumption can imprint on the child and end up into childhood obesity et.all...

To the point being made about letting her eat what she wants and gain all the weight she wants, current studies in the New England Journal of Medicine show that women who gain excess weight during pregnancy predispose their kids to obesity, diabetes, and put them at increased risk for earlier onset of heart disease via cholesterol and high blood pressure. In actuality, a pregnant woman's physiology changes such that they more efficiently use the food they eat. As a result, the recommended weight gain for women with a normal BMI prior to pregnancy is 25-30 lbs

Yep @jkom – you are correct – sushi is the presentation with the rice (blended w vinegar and a bit of sugar and stirred up in a nifty wooden bowl.
Re eating it: I had a birthing group that supplied me weekly insights into the pregnancy process and also an ob-gyn. The birthing group folks were ok on raw-fish sushi, the ob-gyn was not. Nobody said a word back then about lunch meats (which are generally just a little icky on a good day).
Times change, new data comes up, fixed ideas get challenged (run and hide, new ideas are coming every day!). When my mom was pregnant you were not supposed to gain weight, later it became cool to bring on the pounds. I think now we're someplace in the middle. The important things for Melissa are to keep her health and well-being in the forefront, don't let the work commitments overwhelm her and, as for the food, a great perspective are the Vicki Iovine books "The Girlfriend's Guide To...." that cover pregnancy, babyhood, toddlerhood and....getting your groove back once you catch your breath. Awesome books. I wish her the best and admire her courage (for Dancing with the Stars) and gumption.

I love how we have all these rules about what women can and can't consume while pregnant or breast-feeding. However, once kids get a little older we give them the worst junk in the world on a daily basis like pop, overly-processed food and McDonald's. I doubt we have all these obese children because mothers have been eating sushi while pregnant. That said, if it's bad for the baby I would avoid it. By the way, sashimi is raw fish. Sushi is rolled-up veggies or fish with rice and seaweed around it.

It is a good thing that I had my baby before all of the rules about food were in place! I ate it all, and STILL had a very healthy 9 1/2 pound baby girl. I hope the same for Melissa!!!

Blah Blah Blah – let people decide for themselves...some of you are acting like she said she's drinking and smoking while pregnant...let it be...make decisions for yourself and not for others – we are in the US still right?? Just checking.

"You can actually eat raw fish/ sushi if it hhas been previously frozen, which kills off the bacterias that are bad for a fetus. Look it up. And let her do what she wants."

Freezing something will NOT kill bacteria. I worked in an infectious disease lab for three years and we would freeze bacterial samples to preserve them. Just want to make that clear so that no pregnant women eat things that they aren't supposed to.

Sushi is raw fish, you are not supposed to eat it when you are pregnant. Same goes for cold cuts and soft cheese bc of the bacteria that might have developed in them before consuming. There is no such a thing as veggie sushi, there's california rolls, etc.

Actually, Sushi is NOT raw fish, Sashimi IS raw fish. Sushi is simply a dish consisting of vinegared rice and other ingredients, sometimes fish, sometimes not. Whereas Sashimi is simply raw fish.

Serioiusly people??? Criticizing over whether or not she should eat sushi and sandwiches...ugh. Every doctor advises differently and people used to eat that stuff all the time and it was never a big deal...if YOU don't want to eat something when you're pregnant then don't, but don't try and dictate what others should do... And to the person that advises against gaining 90lbs for the "sake of her marriage" – really???? How distasteful and shallow can one be???

Pretty much every American OB/Gyn is going to advise no sushi, no lunchmeat, no soft cheese, no hot dogs, no smoking, no drugs, and no alcohol (first 7 months). Even more than that, when these things are known to cause listeria, bacterial infections, birth defects and inhibit brain development, why in the world would a mother risk their unborn baby for some sushi nigiri???

Can't really call it a Bachelor baby cause the couple was not formed from a bachelor or bachelorette just a contestant who didn't cut it in the end. But I am really happy for her and her new husband on there baby to come.

ah, yeah, sushi is a HUGE no no during pregnancy. every pregnancy book in the bookstore will tell you that. not only are you at risk from contaminants from uncooked meat, but sushi also has higher levels of mercury in it. why risk it?
