Whedon and Abrams enter the great 3-D debate

Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams came together for a meeting of the minds at Entertainment Weekly's "The Visionaries" panel at Comic-Con, something of a "dream come true" panel for fans of both writers.

When the subject turned to Hollywood's new fascination with 3-D movies, the duo had a little disagreement.

While Whedon said he’s " totally into it,” Abrams isn’t as in love.

"The 3-D thing for me, I'm not totally on board with," the “Star Trek” director said. He prefers the "more immersive" IMAX movies, and won't release his upcoming "Super 8" in 3-D.

For Whedon's "Cabin in the Woods," there will be no 3-D, either. "What we want to do is be the only horror movie that's not in 3-D," he said. "That way, we can advertise: 2-D! You'll believe things can move across the screen!"

Whedon also made it official for the first time in public that he’s indeed directing "The Avengers," the Marvel comic mega-movie set for 2012.

He also had a lot of praise for Abrams' "Trek," talking of having "moments of sheer [expletive] panic" over how highly he thought of the movie.

When asked about the finale of "Lost," where his involvement was minimal after the pilot, Abrams praised the work of producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse: "I think Damon and Carlton kicked incredible ass and came up with a finale that ended it well."

Whedon also said he would love to do a sequel to one of the most popular web series ever, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." He blamed "the studio of me" for keeping it from happening, as well as the cast and crew's ever-demanding schedules.

The audience was clearly enjoying every minute of these two riffing on subjects across pop culture, leading one to think that maybe one day, they might even work together.

Just don't ask them if the project will be in 3-D.

This is what Comic Con should be all about. Great to see two talented directors debating at this and not highlights of some Angelina Jolie spy movie. http://bit.ly/asbaet
