Within a matter of months, Bret Michaels was subjected to an emergency appendectomy, a brain hemorrhage and a warning stroke. The 47-year-old rocker also recently learned he has a hole in his heart, which Michaels told Parade he’ll get an operation for in late fall or early winter.
And while just one of these events would have anyone else taking some serious downtime, Michaels - who is currently on tour and preparing for the July 6 release of his solo album - chose to cope a little differently.
“Whatever it is, I live my life passionately,” he told Parade. “And music is a powerful healer for me. I've learned a lot of it is mind over matter. Once I knew that I had a chance to survive the brain hemorrhage, I was taking life and grabbing it for everything I could.”
Another thing Michaels is in the process of grabbing is a spot on “American Idol’s” judges table. The former Poison frontman is one of several people in the running to take Simon Cowell’s coveted seat on the show.
“They did a poll and I think it was Madonna, P. Diddy, Howard Stern and myself, and I took 50 percent or 60 percent of the vote and that's tremendous. I would love to be a judge on 'American Idol.' I think I would bring a lot to the table,” Michaels said.
“I think if they have someone in there to try to imitate Simon, it would be a mistake,” he added. “He's an original. Bring Bret Michaels in to be original to who and what I am. Bring someone who can bring a little grit, true grit back to the show.”
