The latest episode opened with Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer taking a walk through the woods - dressed to the nines, of course (except for maybe Hanna, who was channeling “Flash Dance” with her off-the-shoulder sweatshirt).
The girls were looking for a shed (presumably the same one they set fire to before Alison’s disappearance) and they talked about their plans to make a shrine for Alison there (because what else is there to do when you’re receiving incriminating text messages about events only known to the deceased?).
But right in the midst of their ‘maybe we should build the shrine in town so everyone can see it’ debate, in comes another text: “Heads up BFFs. It’s open season on liars and I’m hunting. -A.”
Later, over a lemon poppy seed muffin, Aria’s dad asks how she likes Mr. Fitz, which is the single most awkward question you can ask your daughter if she were, say, engaging in an intimate relationship with said teacher. (Which she is.)
Luckily, the conversation was cut short when Dad’s former mistress - played by Jody Sawyer from “Center Stage” - walks over to the table right after Aria’s mother ran inside to grab her another muffin.
In another part of town, Spencer can’t seem to understand why her sister Melissa is still mad at her for making out with her fiancé. She also can't seem to escape the tension and dirty looks from her family, as her mother tells her going to her room is simply not an option because she just had her bedspread dry-cleaned. Naturally.
Though Spencer does get points for trying to clear the air when she takes the train to visit Wren, she needs to stop pretending she’s innocent. “Tell them what really happened,” she asked Wren. No, Spencer, allow me: You flirted with your sister’s fiancé and then the two of you made out - that's what really happened.
The girls later run across a surprise at school when Toby Cavanaugh and his sister Jenna walk down the hall, arm-in-arm. A flashback reveals that the girls saw Toby carrying Jenna out of the burning shed, and Alison told the girls to stay back while she talked Toby into taking the blame for the accident. What could Alison possibly have on Toby?
He showed up again in the girl’s locker room (of all places) when Emily's boyfriend surprised her by pinning her up against the lockers, and not in a good way. Thankfully, Toby was randomly lurking in the locker room and was on hand to beat the crap out of him so Emily was free to go.
The detective who has been “investigating” Hanna’s mom far past the "call of duty" had already held a totally inappropriate conversation with Hanna in the principal's office - during which he accused her of losing weight and styling her hair to look like Alison - topped it off by rummaging through her purse and spotting the bracelet Alison gave each of the girls.
Emily and Maya wind up taking their friendship to the next level when they make out in a photo booth at the party, but someone grabbed the pictures before the girls came out. Maya doesn't seem upset by this, which only strengthens my initial reaction of her – this girl is no good.
When Emily gets home from the party, she sees Toby sitting on his porch across the street and walked over to thank him for rescuing her in the locker room. After she heads home, Jenna, who was creepily sitting in the shadows behind Toby, asks why Emily thanked him. All Toby would tell her is that it's not what she thinks it is.
At the end of the show, the girls venture back into the woods where they find Alison’s bracelet on the ground. A clue! Sort of.
The episode ended with a shot of a darkroom wall covered with the pictures of Emily and Maya kissing from the photo booth. Is it sad that my first thought was, “A darkroom? Why wouldn’t they have just had the photos reprinted at Costco or something?”
What did you think of last night’s episode?
