'Golden Girl' Rue McClanahan dies at 76Rue McClanahan, the actress known for her roles as the blowzy best friend Vivian on "Maude" and as the prowling Southern belle Blanche on "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 76. Her manager, Barbara Lawrence, told CNN that she died at 1 a.m. Thursday at New York Presbyterian Hospital of a stroke. Her family was at her side. For the full story, click here.

Thanks to Hallmark Channel, before I go to bed....Golden Girls, when I wake up in the morning....Golden Girls! So nice that all of them live on in reruns and in the hearts of fans. RIP Rue, you made Blanche a larger-than-life character; you will be missed.

She will be missed dearly, but she is in a better place in the heaven with Jesus and God and is so happy to be with all her friends and family.

I'm really sad to hear about Rue McClanahan's passing. She was absolutely PERFECT as Blanche! The Golden Girls is may favorite sitcom of all time. Betty White (the oldest Golden Girl) is the only one left now. This is truly a sad day. I'm almost in tears, literally!
I used to watch Golden Girls with my Aunt Carol who passed away from breast cancer in 1990...I loved the show and always will!!! Rue will be greatly missed!
I always looked forward to the Golden Girls, Rue remiined me so much of myself. That program made me laugh so much and made my day. My sympathy to the family and friends, God Bless
I remember watching Rue and Bea in 'Maude' and loving it! I remember watching Rue and Betty in 'Mama's Family' with Vickie Lawrence and Carol Burnet. The group of them we know as 'The Golden Girls' were comedic geniuses and total class acts...RIP Rue, Bea, and Estelle.

So sorry to hear of Rue's passing. Like some of the other posters, when I was having a bad day, the Golden Girls always made me smile. I'll watch the GG today, and especially think of you, Blanche Devereaux.
The Golden Girls has made me smile for years and years.. I watched them with my grandmother as a kid and they are on jsut about everyday... Seeing the ladies die one by one kind of reminds me of when my grandmother died...We will me you Rue.... Thank you for being a friend.....

Very sad news....just another reminder of how fleeting time is.... and how everything changes. As so many others have said, she was a wonderful actress who brought happiness to so many people.... Golden Girls was, and continues to be a source to turn to when life has you down and you want to feel better.... a huge contribution in anyone's book.

Whoever put it together did a great job of bringing laughter, and toucy subjects out in the open to find humour in humans behavior. I watched the Golden Girls religiously when I was growing up. Every time we lose a cast member, it feels as if I've lost a very dear friend. Rue, thank you for the joy you've given me, you will be greatly missed by this world, and please give Estelle & Bea a big hug for me!

I wish someone would put " Maude" in reruns. It was a great show, and would still appeal to the current generation of viewers. Maude and Golden Girls were reminders of the essential goodness of human nature.
not many people can say that they made other peoples lives happier, but she did. she was a real Dame...I'll always remember her as Ms.Blanche Devereaux and the magic of a show about 4 older broads living together- nobody believed that it would make it...but it did – thank you Blanche, Dorothy, and Sofia for making me laugh and making me happier...someday we'll all sit down and have some cheescake!!!!
I still watch the Golden Girls all the time – what a show!! Pretty groundbreaking for the time – 4 single "older" women looking for love, sharing their lives with each other and eating cheesecake. They were not the typical "grandmas" who knitted, sewed, cooked or sat on a rocking chair pining for their dead husbands.
How heartbreaking that there is only one survior left from the show – Betty White.
The three original Golden Girls may be gone, but the show will go one forever in reruns. I think Blanche was the original Samantha from SATC (except older).

Sad to hear of this. I hadn't watched Golden Girls when it was orginally shown, but did watch it as re-runs. A good show, with good acting and fine writers. Blanche was one of my favorites. The show is still better than most of the half-brained crap that passes now as "entertainment."
This is sad to hear, but she is off to a better place...so in the famous words of Blanche Devereaux, ".. if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go take a long, hot, steamy bath, with just enough water to barely cover my perky bosoms."...RIP

The Golden Girls was one of my Grandmother's favorite shows and after she passed I continued to watch for sentimental reasons. Watching these graceful and funny ladies always reminded me of happy times spent with my Grandmother and, although I didn't know Rue McClanahan personally I will still mourn her passing and continue to cherish the memories via reruns. Rest in peace and thanks for the memories.

wow...this is hard to hear. i'm crying as i write this. i'm only 30 & i grew up watching her on the 80s on golden girls and mama's family. most lygg though. i have the dvds of the golden girls and love watching every minute of it. i will very much miss her sassy humor.

I had a chance to work with her and drive her around a bit when I was a Production Assistant on the "Golden Girls" in 1989 and she was an amazing fun sweet person and a joy to spend time with. My love to her always.

There's a lump in my throat. As someone who has watched and committed most of the GG episodes to memory, I am truly saddened by her passing.

So sad. I watched this show when it first came on. I still watch on reruns. This is one of my all time favorite shows. It full of constant laughs. I know some episodes so well that I know the words. They worked so well together and seemed to have so much fun doing the show. Blanche will truly be missed! Her character was great. Heaven will definitely be brighter.

What a huge loss for all of us. I was hoping to see her on SNL
I remember watching the Golden Girls with my grandmother as a child! I have continued to watch them, I guess as a reminder of those times after losing her. Now that I am an adult it's reality that we all move on and I will always relate each of the Golden Girls to my grandmother. In a way we are all like each of them in 1 way or another, I like to think I am a Blanche! Love you always Rue!

I thought Rue would be the last Golden Girl to go, being the youngest. I was hoping she'd recover from her recent illness. So sad. She was always my favorite 'Girl" I know she did other things, but she'll always be known for Blanche. A fabulous creation. R.I.P.

Rue is missed already. So sad that she was only 76. I, too, watch four episodes each night on Hallmark. At least we know Sophia, Bea, and Rue will be sitting in their kitchen sharing cheesecake. (In real life, Bea Arthur hated cheesecake.) May they watch over Betty White and let her stay with us for many more years.
