Adam Lambert missed ‘Idol’ because of laryngitis

Adam Lambert wasn’t absent from the finale of “American Idol” because he bailed on rehearsals – it was because the “Idol” contestant turned pop star got a case of laryngitis, Lambert’s rep told EW.com.

Roger Widynowski of 19 Entertainment told EW that Lambert had been approached by “Idol” producers to join other top “Idol” stars for the last show of the season - which was also Simon Cowell’s last go-round as an “Idol” judge - but Lambert never confirmed that he’d be a part of the program.

And after he came down with laryngitis over the weekend, Lambert was placed on vocal rest since his own "Glam Nation" tour kicks off June 4, Widynowski said.

Yet in a PopEater.com article, an unnamed source said Lambert sent producers into a tizzy when he didn't show up for rehearsals because they didn't know "‘if Adam is sick, being a diva, or worse, planning something that he does not want people to see," adding that Lambert's "non-appearance will be played off by claiming Lambert is sick.”

Widynowski told EW that the report is “completely fabricated.”

Larry King has Lee and Crystal, the winner and runner-up of “American Idol” Friday night. Watch “Larry King Live,” Friday night at 9 ET on CNN.

What a pity that there are so many mean spirited people so envious of Adam Lambert's once in a lifetime incredible talent that they have to spew hate , outright lies and when supplied with informed facts, still can't comprehend it. They expend so much time and energy trying to discredit this really honest genuinly nice guy that is just trying to entertain and make music exciting again that I think they secretly realize he is the superstar of this century. I pity their poor, sick, afflicted souls. They're so unhappy and filled with hate. Adam's fans love him because he's kind and non judgemental of others.

@annie – Um, yes Bret Michaels could have died. He had bleeding in the brain which is something Gary Coleman died from today. Geez, you Lambert fans are so full of hate. It makes me wonder what kind of person Adam is since he attracts people like you.

This CNN right? Aren't you supposed to get the stories correct? Well, this is DEAD WRONG! If you follow Adam Lambert, and I do , you would know that he wasn't even scheduled to be on Idol . He is preparing for his Glam Nation tour which is kicking off next Friday night in Wilkes Barre,PA. He does have a little laryngitus, but he is resting his voice. OK? So there's the REAL truth....not some garbage that you decide is a good headline.....It's wrong and you should tell people that you were wrong! You are CNN, right????

So much ado about nothing! Ryan Seacrest said on KISS radio show this morning that Adam Lambert was NOT asked by AI. So why does it matter what false rumors say, or whether he had laryngitis or not, or anything else for that matter. Can't be part of the show if you are not asked to be. Sounds pretty simple to me.

Too bad Adam's own press agent says Adam WAS approached by producers to be part of the finale. I think they're all having a hard time getting their stories straight. Anyway, considering American Idol gave Adam the honor of being the first former contestant to be a mentor it isn't believable that they'd snub him from the finale.

So a bunch of people weren't there David Cook, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Daughty, Katherine McPhee, Adam etc. And even though Adam let people know last weeks that he wouldn't be there he's the one that gets stories and rumors made about him wow. The finale must have been very boring if people are writing about this stuff.

Well, guess the slimey liar at Popeater got the hits he wanted. That's the name of the game when it comes to a media magnet like Lambert. Always an inviting target. Lambert's a great guy and a great singer, but this sort of garbage will be his fate for a long time. Amazing how much vitriol is out there – maybe Lambert's right – people need to get laid more.

Part of the reason he's an internet media magnet is because his herd comments over and over on anything that is written about him. If I had a dime for every comment I've read by someone claiming to be a middle-aged woman whose life has been changed and given meaning by Adam Lambert I could retire right now.

ADAM is a kind hearted caring individual who says nothing but nice things about/to all the people he is/has been associated with including those who are less than nice to him. He was disappointed when AI did not have a slot for him to perform but said nothing derogatory about them. He has publicly thanked AI numerous times for allowing him the chance to platform his talent on the show. He thanks everyone all the time ... and never takes anyone/anything for granted. He is Eloquent .. Articulate .. Refreshingly UNfiltered & Talented. If he says he has LARYNGITIS & it has been CONFIRMED by others ... then why not believe ADAM? Why choose to believe that filthy gossip RAG reporter instead? Is he any more credible ............. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

While it is always a treat to see Adam Lambert on tv, I was okay with him not being at the finale. He had his big moment that week when he came back to mentor the contestants. He did not only provide insightful and articulate advise, but ended the whole gig with a stunning performance. That was huge and a big honor. All the attention about Adam and David Cook missing and Simon leaving seems to be just as big as who actually won the contest. There certainly are very unique people in this world who give us something to talk about....

Cami? No. He has never acted like a Diva OR Divo (the male term for it) Adam has been gracious to a fault through every moment of his Idol journey and beyond. Even his dancers and bandmates praise him for having so much patience and professionalism. As for the media, believe NOTHING of what you read and only HALF of what you SEE. It really is all about sensationalizing. Adam was never slated to appear on the finale and is too busy gearing up for his long tour....plus it has been verified that he IS on vocal rest. OK? OK People, LISTEN UP.....because I'm only gonna say this ONCE.
Adam has ONE...and only one, instrument. If it gets "broken", their is NO replacement, no exchange, no repair, period. So all this BS about if he should have been at Idol, or not, finale, blah, blah, is irrevlevant in the bigger scheme of things. He should go sit in the audience? Or stand on the stage, merely "mouthing" the singing, faking it? PERISH the thought! The people who think like that...are the same idiots that would bring a Stradivarius to a barnyard Ho Down!
Adam has had to be on vocal rest before. Isn't the first time, and will not be the last.No one in the world knows better than he, how to take good care of that instrument. It is even more rare than the afore-mentioned Stradivarius.
It is a once-in-several generations instrument. Those of us who are true vocal connoisseurs (one who enjoys with discrimination and appreciation of subtleties) can surely appreciate the rare talent that we are fortunate enough to witness in our own lifetimes, right? Idol, schmidol! Adam, along with most of his fans, have already acknowledged Idol's role, in getting a National platform so that we could see and hear this awesome performer.
But Idol is over for Adam, and the most important thing happening in his life now is his own Glam Nation tour.....first in the USA, then Internationally.
Adam? Don't worry about rumors, gossip and hate dear...just polish and take care of that golden instrument and we will all be waiting to see you on tour! Thanks! (stepping off the soapbox now...) ;)

What a beautifully stated comment. Is there a way you can send this to Adam? I read comment after comment about Adam to see if there are other people who "get him" like I do–always saddened by the cruel ones. (I don't think he's oblivious to all of the mean remarks even with all the practice he must have had over the years. Although he's pretty close to as perfect a human being as I've ever witnessed, he is still human.) I honestly am astounded and have come to believe that people just can't get their minds around the immensity of Adam's talent. In all my life (and I've listened to classical, jazz, rock, musical theater) I have never heard a voice like his–ever.

To Kentucky Fan, Thanks so much but as you well know, we (you and I) are actually in the majority and we are in fine company, since most of the music world gets the fact that Adam is a rare talent, indeed. Paula said it best...ICONIC.
When the man who was never slated to even appear on the finale of a major show, gets MORE attention for not being there, than anyone that was actually there, and more than the actual winner and runner-up...well, doesn't THAT...say it all? LOL!
I hope you have tickets to see him on the tour! We saw him in Indio, at Fantasy Springs and when he sang that last-minute jam of the acoustic "Whole Lotta Love", 3,500 people were absolutly rivoted. We were mesmerized, hypnotized and thoroughly Glmaorized! Led Zep might just as well hand that song over to Adam, because he completely owns it now.We will be seeing him 3 more times on the Glam Nation Tour and my husband (who is a rock musician) and I are totally stoked! Thanks again! :)

I thought Lambert sounded like a jerk on twitter. He sounded ungrateful to the show although I don't really believe that is the case. He should learn to take a breath before he rants and raves. I have to agree with Andy that if Bret Michaels, who could have died, showed up then Lambert, who owes the show a lot, should have been there. It does seem like he's acting like a baby.

      @KelleyAnne,

I recall on the Season * Idol Tour Kris Allen was sick for one of the venues. Adam graciously sang Kris' s part on 'Don't Stop Believin" . He sang it the way Kris would have sung....softly,gently. He didn't try to grandstand him. Adam is very aware of his friend and his good fortune. Should we lambaste Kris for nor mustering up enough energy to perform that night?

Do you honestly think for one minute that had Adam been asked to participate in thefinale,he wouldn't have jumpd at the opportunity and made scheduling plans accordingly? He has been very thankful to Idol (watch this season's performance of WWFM....he thanks Idol after his performance...watch it,I dare you!)!!

This is ridiculous! Adam is constantly being subjected to this crap! I don't see other past Idols having to explain their whereabouts!

How many times does it have to be said that Adam was meeting with people for his tour. He was working with equiipment that had to be shipped back the next day. He did not get home to after 10:00. If every other runner up that wasn't there can be excused then why can't Adam. Just a few weeks ago after a stunning performance of Whatya Want From Me he stood on the stage and thanked American Idol and said he owed them everything. What more do you want? I haven't seen every other idol say that. Even when the truth is said a million times there will still be people like you that only hear half of it. That is exactly why it is so upsetting when these lies come out. Either you don't read, or you are so jaded that you don't even hear the truth. Are you wondering about every single other contestant that wasn't up there on stage? No, I didn't think so. The won't be called names. Sad that this is the way it goes no matter how much truth there is people would rather believe the lies lie you.

Good god, even Bret Michaels, who's suffered an appendix rupture, a stroke & heart problems this year alone & who has no connection to Idol, was brave enough to show up & risk getting ill on stage! And Madame Lamebert couldn't bother to stand on a stage, lip synch & smile for the man who gave him his break because.... awwww... widdle baby had a sore throat? D.I.V.A. And a liar to boot.... Idol insiders already spilled the beans that he didn't show up for rehearsal & was dropped. Pretty unprofessional.

Has that never happened to you? What's it to you anyway? Haters hated when he was on Idol and now they can't stand that he didn't appear. Note to Adam Lambert and David Cook: if Idol stays around next year, look in advance to the calendar and clear your stupid schedules for the finale. You better learn that Idol made you and the fans who watch the show can easily forget you. If Carrie Underwood, Barry and Robin Gibb and Hall and Oates can show up to kiss the ring, you best get on board and do the same. You're not better than any of these people. David Cook as a winner, I am particularly looking at you. What exactly does he (Adam) need to do to prepare??? gargle salt water! Gimme a break! He could have been there. As for David, as mentioned before – David Cook was unable to attend as he chose to honor a prior commitment to a charity event (and rightly so!) in Kansas City (reportedly, the callout to past Idol winners for an on-stage 'reunion' for Simon only went out this past Friday). The event he was committed to was for Shadow Buddies Foundation, an organization that provides help to children with cancer (Cook's older brother died of brain cancer in 2009).

As far as the prep theory. It does take Adam awhile to get ready because he is a full,glammed-up entertainer. Care to ask Christina,Beyonce,Gaga how long.....no?.....didn't think so! Do you have a problem with that?

Prepare?? FYI, the BEST musician/singers/artists in the world spend a ton of time on preparation. That's what makes them the BEST. Paul McCartney is famous for spending literally HOURS after a venue is set up, rehearsing and going over each song, adjusting all the mics, instruments, etc, lighting, before each and every show. And it shows in his stellar performances. So, while a little "salt water gargle" may be OK for the opening act, it is not enough for a true headliner.Adam is in great company and you are apparently uneducated and/or uninformed.

Lambert said over a week ago that he was not asked to perform on idol, and has had to cancel interviews today because he has laryngitis, less than a week before his tour starts.

Too bad, His tour is starting this week and it's going INTERNATIONAL in the fall. His record is number one in Germany and gold and platinum in many countries. If you THINK AMERICAN IDOL wanted him there to outshine Kris Allen and these pathetic Season 8 contestants, you're living in dream land.

I agree with this to some degree. I'm not saying he should have stayed for the whole show but since he's right there in LA it would have been nice if he'd showed up for a few minutes to say goodbye to Simon. Simon definitely supported Adam during his season. He even recently said Adam should have won.

@There's a Reason For That Actually more important than the laryngitis is the fact that ADAM WAS NOT TO PARTICIPATE WITH PAST CONTESTANTS. Adam said on Twitter "I have now just been made aware of more gossip and rumormill: First of all, I was never asked to appear on the finale in any capacity. Was put on vocal rest yesterday from MY show's rehearsals which doubled the work 2 do 2day since all equip. had 2 be sent back east tonight. All i ever heard was:"you've not been asked to perform on finale. Would you like to sit in the audience?" Me: sorry-Too much work to do today." Ryan Seacrest on his radio show this morning even said he could not understand why AI had not asked Adam to participate since he had been such a huge part of Season 8. Everyone needs to give it a rest already, especially when you do not know what you are talking about..

Get your facts straight before you knock someone. Adam happens to be busy preparing for his first headlining tour and trying to make it perfect for his fans. He spent the entire day and evening in rehearsals and meeting with lighting designers, costume designers, etc. for the tour. He didn't get home till after 10pm so how was he suppose to fit it in? He was not even asked to perform but just sit in the audience.

And where was Daughtry? Only Adam was the subject of lies and uglyness because of his absence. He tweeted at least a week ago that he would not be on Idol, but he would be on Ellen and Leno. His fans know that he would NEVER miss a rehearsal, and he is NOT a diva. It's the haters that rear their nasty heads and spread flatout lies.

Thank you CNN Entertainment for setting the record straight. Adam is working his a** off getting ready for his huge 60+ city North American tour starting next week. The tour is nearly sold out, and Adam wants to give his fans the best show ever. The international tour follows.

    • There's a reason for that

Adam was the only one with a lame excuse! Laryngitis, Really??? He could have made an appearance! They didn't ask the DIVA to sing just show some respect to Simon and be a part of the show! LAME LAME LAME

Why isn't anyone reporting on the fact that several other former and successful participants were not in attendance such as Chris Daughtry, Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson (just to name three)?? There really seems to be an anti-Adam Lambert campaign in the US media. Is it because he is succeeding not only on the national stage but worldwide as well? I agree with Jonathan C.'s comment about him being on AI just a month ago where he had plenty of time to thank Simon Cowell. After all, the entire planet was made aware of Simon's departure last January. The US should celebrate Adam Lambert's successes, not denigrate it...jeez.

The even bigger picture is how these media sources were reporting the story. That Shuter guy couldn't wait to use the word "Diva". Would he call a straight man a "diva"? I think not. There is strong sterotype about gay men and a lot of people in the media (male bloggers in particular) who look for any nuance in Adam's behavior to throw the word Diva at him. Lambert stated weeks ago he wasn't attending. If you go back and read the story Shuter wrote you will see how he is feeding into the stereotype. Lambert canceled a press conference the previous day that had nothing to do with Idol. It was to do with his Glamnation tour. Shuter knew before he wrote the article that Adam stated he was suffering from throat problems. So Shuter maliciously made that statement that Lambert was going to claim illness when in fact he already knew Lambert was ill and had already canceled an appearance. Sleazy.

Love Adam, would have loved to have seen him last night on AI finale. I wish people would stop fabricating stories about him. Instead of having Adam on the show AI wasted people's time with Robert Platt and those other characters that were with him. Adam Lambert rocks!

CNN: Did you read Adam's twitter @adamlambert. He explained the whole thing. Weeks ago he said he was not going to be on American Idol. Then all of a sudden this Robert Shuter from Popeater – about as reliable as The National Enquirer started saying Adam bailed on them. As Adam stated a couple of weeks ago and once again last night he was never slated to be on the show. So how can you bail if you weren't slated to be on the show. Shuter made the whole thing up. Come on now – a publication called Popeater.

Than't a great point JohnathanC. Since when is the main story about who did not perform bigger than the show itself? It must be American Idol 9 which only had one show this season worth watching. Let see, OH YEAH WITH ADAM!!!

I hope Adam is ok when he starts his tour! i don't like people calling him a diva, he clearly isn't. He's never said anything bad about Idol, only positive things.

Just the fact that more media are reporting on Adam Lambert's absence than on the actual winners and show itself proves that he is without a doubt a bona fide superstar. He was on American Idol just a month ago giving THE performance of all performances on that show since its inception. He spoke with Simon at that time and probably wished him well. In his many, many interviews (nationally and internationally), Adam Lambert has ALWAYS thanked American Idol for the opportunities the show gave him. He also thanked everyone at AI again last month for EVERYTHING. What else is required? Let him be an artist and be proud to have such a great star to represent you America.

Well, Adam is by far the most exciting idol to talk about. I just LOVE how he handels all the negativity with so much SMARTS and CHARM. He is a TRUE champion!!!!
I can't wait to see him on tour this summer. This guy gives a preformance you will NEVER forget.
FYE, his album is AMAZING!!!! WWFM is a great song and IF I HAD YOU will be a great HIT!!!

Those of us who get how phenomenally talented Adam is–and what a kind, honest, all-around great person he is–and are getting tired of all the hate thrown his way, care. Adam is the best thing to come out of American Idol. . . he's a superstar in the making.

meh, who cares who won, they were both mediocre. I guess Lee was bit more "current" and Crystal had this look the whole time like she had it in the bag so I'm glad she lost LOL Besides, the story of the night was BRET MICHAELS! the dude is a true rock star!!!

I'm sorry but quite honestly, WHO CARES!! No one is asking why David Cook was not there. Adam is a great talent but he is sooooo blown out of proportion. Sorry... JMO.

It's the media who blows him out of proportion, dissecting everything he does and says no matter how simple (i.e. "Oh, look! Adam went to Starbucks!" *cue hoard of paparazzi dashing towards him*). And if you do have "great talent" (which is lacking greatly in many mainstream artists these days), then yeah, it's fresh, new and interesting. At least he's handling the negativity with grace and positivity. What more do you want? :)

David Cook was unable to attend as he chose to honor a prior commitment to a charity event (and rightly so!) in Kansas City (reportedly, the callout to past Idol winners for an on-stage 'reunion' for Simon only went out this past Friday). The event he was committed to was for Shadow Buddies Foundation, an organization that provides help to children with cancer (Cook's older brother died of brain cancer in 2009).
