It's official: 'Law and Order' is done

NBC has officially confirmed reports that the original "Law & Order" series is canceled.

Its last episode will be on Monday, May 24.

But, as we reported earlier, that doesn't mean the spinoffs are also disappearing: NBC has officially picked up "LOLA," a Los Angeles based version of "Law & Order," and "Law & Order: SVU" is moving forward.

Said NBC president Angela Bromstad in the release, " ‘Law & Order’ has been one of the most successful franchises in the history of television, which is why it is so critical that we continue this important brand and our relationship with Dick Wolf and his team with ‘LOLA’ and ‘Law & Order: SVU.’ "

The network didn't provide a reason for the cancellation.

Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's tough to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and visual appearance. I must say you have done a amazing job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very fast for me on Internet explorer. Excellent Blog!

Who cares about the spelling? It's not that important. Keep the comments on the subject please

Law & Order hasn't been that good for awhile now, or at least for me. I'm actually surprised it lasted this long, to be honest. Nowadays, people seem like like boring shows though, especially in America, either that or reality shows.

With that being said, I wouldn't say to cancel it. I can think of shows I'd rather see canceled like Lost, Survivor, the bachelor shows, all these doctor shows, etc. I'm not surprised though, since those shows I named have lots of ratings.

Now I'm no fan of NBC since they're known for making stupid decisions but the decision to cancel it could be NBC but there could also be numerous others who decided the cancellation as well. take that into consideration before you jump to conclusions like people always seem to do.

Law & Order is the best show on TV. Slowly saying goodbye to ABC, CBS and especially NBC for channels that listen and care.

They are making a big mistake by canceling law and order alot of people will set and watch thier episods by the hour. The new reality shows aren't worth watching, why not take them off the air. For as many more channels that we have today we should be able to select the channels we want. Paying for channels you never watch is a waste of time and money.

The biggest star of ALL the L&O incarnations is and always has been NEW YORK CITY. Dick Wolf has proven over and over that the cast can rotate, be added to or subtracted from or even completely replaced and the show will still suceed because the procedural drama set in the greatest city in the world just works.

Law and Order set in LA will flounder and fail because it lacks the working-class ethic and general conservatism that NYC has at its heart.
LOLA cases will involve spoiled children murdering their parents and getting off when the jury feels sorry for them because they're orphans, after which the whole cast will retire for a wine and cheese buffet...

First 24 and now Law and Order in the same season. One is Fox and the other is NBC but at any rate, two of TV's greatest dramas are ending this year. What kind of drama is left for the intelligent audience to view ?

I assume one the top reason for this, is that this new L&O in LA, is closer to their main studios, than the original L&O in NYC is.

Maybe the cast will all be charged with violating the Good Samaritan law in New York and be locked up until they are released for a new season. Oh that happened already on Seinfield. No wonder the history channel is ahead in ratings.

It's too bad they're cancelling. This is the one I show I watch with any regularity. CI and SVU don't do it for me like the original series. But I guess all good things must come to an end. I'll check out LOLA, but I've always hated LA. i can't imagine I'd be interested in a show based there. I bet the stories will be drugs, immigration problems and the craziness coming out of Hollywood. No thanks.

I quit watching SVU when they turned it into the Mariska Hargitay show, complete with scenery chewing. Nothing else on NBC appeals to me, so goodbye NBC. As for L&O in La-LA Land...fuhgeddaboudit! Hey John. Pronouns. Possessive of I is my or mine. Possesive of you is your or yours. Possessiven of he is his. Possessive of she is her or hers. Possessive of they is their or theirs. "It's" is a contraction of "it is" never a possessive. No literate person would ever use I's, Me's, You's, or They's. Neither should they use "it's" as a possessive.

Not too surprising a move by the morons running NBC, unfortunately. The network has a penchant for closing down any crime drama that requires thinking on the part of the viewer. When they cancelled "Homicide: Life on the Streets" after a 7 year run that received a number of EMMY awards, I lost interest in anything they had to offer and opted to watch L&O (all versions) via reruns on other channels.

wish the networks would cancel the "reality" shows like Survivor, Biggest Loser, Wife Swap, Amazing Race, Bachelor, Bachelorette,...etc Pathetic people out for their 15 min of fame. Yuk. I refuse to watch them. There is so much trash TV on evey fricken channel and yet this network chooses to take off a very popular show. Where are the shows like Mary Tyler Moore, The Jeffersons, etc. There are few cute sitcoms on but the trashy reality shows have taken over the networks and personally I'm opposed to it but, apparently alot people like them otherwise they wouldn't be on. I don't understand Law & Order...that seems to be a very popular show.
I AGREE WITH THIS PERSON WHO SAID THIS ALOT. ONLY A PERSON WITH A LOW IQ WOULD WATCH THESE SHOWS. WE NEED LAW & ORDER. IT ALSO KEEPS US ON ON SOMES LAWS.

    Jaynecia,
I feel your pain. I wasn't sure I wanted to adjust to L&O without S. Epatha Merkerson. Then again I've remained a fan through many departures: some of my favorite characters have been played by Fred Thompson and Steven Hill as DAs; Chris Noth, Jesse Green, Jerry Orbach, Benjamin Bratt, and Dennis Farina as detectives; Michael Moriarty, Angie Harmon, Jill Hennessy as legal eagles.

I like the L&O formula (focus on work not personal life). It makes the story the star of the show unlike CSI where for example we've seen various forensic technicians fall in and out of love in various combinations. Horatio Cain (played whisperingly by David Caruso) the lead lab tech in CSI Miami even jetted off to South America after some drug cartel baddie threatened an ex-wife...or was it Horatio's new-found son...anyway you get the drift. With such a complicated backstory I imagine it will be Caruso's call as to when CSI Miami can do without him.

L&O has been a staple of quality programming for two decades. Looking back, it was elementary, but as the show grew, the stories developed and grew into something that was wonderful to watch. It brought conscience to a subject, a human face on crimes and causes that everyone had an opinion about, whether they knew it at the time or not. NBC's cancelling of it sends a message that everyone should pay close attention to: Better to have no opinion than to have the wrong one.

NBC's programming executives should be fired, pure and simple. They have been insulting our collective intelligence with reality programming for so long, they mistakenly believe it is quality TV compared to L&O. I hope they come up with something that is at least a little mentally stimulating, though considering who we are talking about, I don't think I'll hold my breath.

Are you a teacher from England or a teacher who teaches English? Um? English word? Im ? Did you mean to type " I'm" ? Just curious, because one who teaches English and corrects someone making a mistake about contractions and then make a similar mistake makes me wonder how good a teacher they are.

If Ms. Merkerson stayed on, would L&O continue another year? Maybe a cable outlet will pick up the mothership and give Mr. Wolf his record. In any case, nobody would cough up the bucks needed to surpass the numbers of Gunsmoke episodes.

When Jerry Orbach passed away, part of the show went with him. However, they tried to fill his shoes with Dennis Farino and Chris Noth for which those men did a good job....but they were not Jerry. Over the years, we saw a number of the original cast members leave....Jesse Martin being one of them. The only 2 left now are Epatha Merkeson and Sam Waterson and they alone cannot carry the show. The storylines are as good as they have always been but something is missing and the 'new' cast just doesn't seem to cut it. Even Sam Waterson's air time has been cut down considerably which should have been a clue. S. Epatha Merkeson is an excellent actress and how she handled her cancer crisis was so real and convincing. We still watch L&O but if we miss an episode, that's o.k. Good luck to those remaining people who tried their hardest to keep this show on top, but I guess it just wasn't enough.

There are so few thought provoking dramas on network television anymore and it is such a shame to see it go. Good luck to all the cast members over the years you have done a remarkable job.
NBC you are making a mistake. I only watch your network for two programs and now one of those is gone. If you lose SVU there is no other reason to watch this network. I know that you are trained to program to the lowest common denominator and that reality tv is cheaper to produce but it is trash tv. No wonder network television is losing all their viewers to cable networks and it is because of stupid decisions like this one NBC. The programming department of this network needs to go back to school or get off of the drugs. You have ruined this network with "junk" programming by removing what few intelligent programs that remained.

The possessive of "it" actually is "its". This is one of the exception to the general rule of adding an apostrophe to indicate a state of possession by a noun. I presume it is because "it" typically refers to inanimate objects which are not to be personified as a general rule.
The word "it's" actually does mean "it is". I hope this helps.

You would think NBC would have learned from their previous mistakes. Take for instance all the great shows they canned to make room for Jay Leno's amazing new show at 10:00 p.m. We all know how that ended. And now, Law and Order – the original ?? Let SVU go instead (or not now that they all got a nice increase in salary – sort of seems ironic, doesn't it). This cast of characters is doing a great job – but to NBC what difference does that make. I am almost positive that I used the singular "is" correctly in that sentence. I don't want to start a long debate like the previous one about it's or its.

    Two points:
1/ re/ grammar : I happen to have a copy of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style – the grammar bible – right here at my desk and I can confirm that all those who pointed out John's error are correct. As S&W put it: "A common error is to write it's for its, or vice versa. The first is a contraction, meaning "it is." The second is a possessive." They give this example: "It's a wise dog that scratches its own fleas." Just remember that line! The CNN article, which posted : "Its last episode...." – where the "it" refers to NBC, was correct. It is a posessive example.

2/ re/ L&O – LOVE this franchise but especially Criminal Intent – sorry to see the original go, but I'm more bummed over losing the great D'Onofria/Erbe duo in Criminal Intent. They were fantastic. BRING THEM BACK – move them to LA show if you have to – figure out a reason they could end up there – that would be a great show -same great team but a new city and a whole new bunch of story ops.

Another show worth watching is being cancelled. Law &Order is a great show, one that I always record in case there's an interruption such as a phone call, visitor, etc. But really... It's only a TV show, but by some comments made here, it must be more than that. The news that it's being cancelled really brought out strong feelings in some people, and I want to comment on one in particular.

@Brickell Princess: Just what type shows do you like to watch? What makes you “feel intelligent”? I get the feeling that: (#1) you don’t understand what’s going on in an intelligently written show that usually deals very closely with a topic similar to a recent news story from somewhere around our country, and you, therefore, feel less than intelligent (should I say ‘dumb’?) and jealous of those who do understand and enjoy the show; (#2) you have a problem with seeing police and the court system deal with those who commit offenses and are, in most cases, taken off the street; (#3) you neither understand the ‘feel good’ moments in a medical drama when, even though scripted, someone is healed or recovers or has some breakthrough with problems and moves on with their life, nor have much respect for those who work so hard in the medical profession to save lives and/or make life more comfortable for those who are suffering from an illness, injury or mental illness (in medical dramas, yes, it is scripted but probably very close to someone’s real life situation); and, finally, (#4) you think everyone should like what you like and think like you think. I am personally thankful that not everyone is what you appear to be from your comment – self-centered and stooping to name calling and belittling others because they like something you don't. The world is a big place and there are lots of TV stations, so if you don't like what's on, change channels. Just remember that it takes all kinds to make up this world, and it only makes sense that it takes diverse tv programming to satisfy everyone. Seek what you enjoy and let everyone else do the same. Because you don't like something doesn't mean it's bad – it's just your choice. God bless the USA for our freedom to choose (profession, religion, where to live, etc. – yes, even TV shows!)

I loved LnO and watched it religiously through its cast changes. At first I thought that was a bad idea, but after awhile it started to make sense because different people brought different experiences and perspective, pretty much what you'd see in that type of environment with employees coming and going.

What that being said, this last cast ensemble is the worst cast selection to date. I never warmed up to Jeremy Sisto and Anthony Anderson. I can't even tell you the names of the two ADAs and Jack McCoy being made the DA and getting his passionate arguments out of the courtroom made things worse. Anita Van Buren's realistic cancer dilemma brought some realism to the show after years of lagging but when S Epatha Merkerson announced she was leaving, I was done. Without her and with McCoy not being in the courtroom plus with Jerry Orbach dying a few years earlier, that was all she wrote. I'm glad that SVU is still there because that cast is stellar and I probably won't watch LOLA. I'm sorry but LA-based shows never work out. Nip/Tuck jumped the shark when it moved to LA. I can imagine a Hollyweird-like atmosphere and honestly – who cares about self-absorbed celebrities, celebritarts and "ripped from the headline Hollyweird" stories? I can get that on any reality show.

Anyway, RIP LnO. We hardly knew ye...

As a loyal viewer who has faithfully watched every episode of L&O since it first aired, I cannot tell you how disappointed I am that this thoughtful, well written drama is being removed from the airwaves. L & O is one of the best shows ever on TV. You know when you see the disclaimer in the beginning that the show actually is based on a real, recent event. I've been a fan ever since day 1, except for Dennis Farina years. No knock on him, but maybe a downer after Jerry Orbach passed away. Hopefully, USA or TNT will pick up the show. It is still relevant, still has good writing and acting. It is amazing with all of the cast changes over the years the show keeps on rolling along. It will be missed. Not only the cast, but also crew, catering, small businesses loaning their store fronts for scenes, extras, N.Y.P.D., N.Y.F.D., EMT services, etc as the original I read several years ago, brought in $1.5 million dollars every three weeks into NYC economy. Most small businesses and hospitality service industry craved the business they received and now that 1/3 of the city's economy is now affected, it makes NBC look foolish. I used to be an avid viewer of all the L&O and L&O SVU shows but, in recent years, the political overtones in the shows began to turn me off. TV dramas should not be a forum for pushing political views. However, they often show a liberal bias in their characters, lines and plots, which is something that does not sit well with everyone.

But now even that is a moot issue with me. Since I watched the major networks news programs pander to that same liberal political bias during the 2008 primaries and beyond, rather than remaining objective, I have almost totally quit watching ANYTHING on the three major networks, and I never watch CNN or MSNBC. I even get my local news from an independent channel instead of those affiliated with the three major networks. I am done with all of them.

Actually, there is much better stuff to be found on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Animal Planet, Home & Garden, National Geographic, etc. They provide information and expand knowledge......and none of it comes with ideological overtones or political bias.

I hope the major networks wise up about these things. I, for one, have learned I can live quite nicely without them.

It is true, Jerry Orbach was a tremendous loss. Not only to the show but to entertainment. However, the writers continued to maintain the integrity of the show. Cast members come and go, but my interest level never wavered. What a loss.

One comment about reality TV. Unfortunately, it's a lot cheaper for the networks to make than scripted drama in that you don't have to pay actors and scriptwriters. Also, they draw in decent ratings. If more people would stop watching shows like "American Idol" and Survivor," then maybe there would be more scripted TV and shows like L&O would still be on the air.

    Bill,

Contrary to what you mention, there have been many successful shows set in LA. The original "Perry Mason" with Raymond Burr was set in LA and lasted for 9 seasons before it ended. "LA Law" also had a decent run as well. The original "Law & Order" obviously had a great run at 20 seasons, and it's rare that anyone will match that anytime soon. Unfortunately, it was losing steam and viewers even before NBC made its ill-advised attempt to have the Leno show in prime time. Some of that might be due to the departure of favorites such as Jerry Orbach and Angie Harmon. Besides, "SVU" has definitely outstripped the original in popularity and the new LOLA series will definitely have the same format except in a different city, much like the CSI franchise is doing for CBS.

L&O was and still is a trailblazer and it will still live on in syndication, home video and in its numerous spin-offs. It's a shame that it got cancelled, but that happens to every show eventually. (Except "The SImpsons," it seems.)

I read, over the Internet, a lot of comments with grammar problems. Well, this is America, for many English is the second (or third) language. IMHO, this is tragic news. I have been a fan of the original series, as well as SVU, since day one. Stuck with it through all the cast changes and have, in fact, been impressed that the quality of the shows has improved of late. Yes, I miss the days of Jerry Orbach and Chris Noth, but I think that the entire ensemble has been well constructed and the stories are still relevant and compelling. I suspected that there would be a problem when S. Epatha Merkeren decided to leave the show and news was released that Alana de la Garza is expecting a child in the fall. In fact, I turned to my husband and asked him what he thought would happen to the show. I thought it might be something exciting, like the ADA being attacked or Jack getting involved with her (don't say it's never been done), but never expected this. It is sad that a show of this quality will be dropped so that we can be entertained by yet another idiotic reality show or something of that ilk. God forbid, we force viewers to think about relevant social issues. I guess that I will have to continue to watch my reruns of L&O in order to see quality TV. Dick Wolf, to you and the entire cast and crew, thank you for 20 great years. May your future ventures be as entertaining, intelligent, and fruitful!

Of late the trials have become a trial as they have moved from one twist to another. If they in fact applied law so sloppily in real life, they would be eaten alive by the defense. You can't change who you want to prosecute willy-nilly or your credibility will be crushed.

Law and Order is the BEST crime show on TV. This is a BIG MISTAKE. They should keep Law and Order and add Law and Order Los Angeles just like they did with NCIS and NICIS LA. I and I know many others can't get enough of this show and it will be watched in re-runs for years.

"When Law & Order debuted in 1990, only CEOs had cell phones and Sam Waterston was just the guy from The Killing Fields. For the next two decades, through several rotating casts of cops and lawyers, the show proceeded to build a whole universe of shadowy intentions and cross examinations. If you’re like me, you were never a regular viewer, but you still somehow managed to watch literally hundreds of hours of Law & Order. And so, you’re probably feeling just a little twinge of sadness at the news that NBC has canceled the venerable cop show."

    English Degree Holder,

You need to learn how to read! Checkyourself was completely correct to post:

Come on, CNN... It should be "ITS last episode", not "it's".

(Well, except that the period should have been inside of the end quote.)

The complete sentence to which this referred was: "Its last episode will be on Monday, May 24." CNN apparently corrected it from the orginal (grammatically incorrect) post which read "It's last episode..." CNN's sentence was incorrect when checkyourself made the comment, but is correct now. John was always incorrect. English Degree Holder can't read.

But, to the subject that's really at hand, I never got into the original Law & Order. SVU & CI are much better, in my opinion.

    To all you L&O fans:

Orbach was off L&O before he died. He was in his own spin-off named "Law and Order – In the Courts" or something like that. Died while making the 6th or 7th episode, I think. Sharon Stone was signed up to be a cast member for the May 24th show, along with the USA's top female skier (don't remember name). Guess she asked for the spot.

L&O – Criminal Intent was on NBC for around five years, then went to USA. Still there with a whole new cast – it's third cast.

L&O – SVU has been on 15 years with it's original cast! Got my VCR (or whatever) programmed to record every episode. I really like SVU better than I liked the original L&O, but they were close.

Really gonna miss "Law and Order." Now I know why NBC is ranked behind Fox.

WHAT?? I can't believe that one of the best shows on tv for this year or any year that it has been televised is now getting the boot! NBC keeps cutting its own throat with replacements that last maybe 8 episodes. At least it was one of the shows I always watched while all the other network drivel (reality show junk) was broadcast. If any of the L&O shows needed to be booted, L&O:CI should have been gone after the big mistake was made by eliminating Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe and replacing them with Jeff Goldblum, Mastrantonio and some unknown. I'll still watch SVU but am appalled that the original L&O has been junked for WHAT? A finer showcast could not be find anywhere as all the actors have done a great job over the years, especially Markerson and Waterston and the newest group consisting of Roche, DeLaGarza, Sisto and, especially Anderson have done a great job and I'll miss them. L&O had lost a little bit of its audience recently, but it is still an excellent show. In my opinion, SVU has become the premiere L&O. I hope L&O gets the Criminal Intent treatment and just picks up on a cable network. The current cast is still a good group and the writing still top notch. Another brillant decision by the same people who thought Leno at 10:00 was the next great thing only to be compounded by their handling of the O'Brien Show. It's quite apparent that they have no clue. I didn't realize that a broadcast company who had to scramble to fill five hours of prime time air had the luxury of dismissing a rock solid show.

The people who are unaware of the difference between "its" and "it's" do not strike me as Einsteins (plural, not possessive, so no need of an apostrophe).

Can anyone provide me of an example of Albert Einstein misspelling a word?

First, I love this show. It will come on for hours and I would watch it late into the night.
Second, John is right...google it. "The possessive case of nouns in English is formed by using an apostrophe plus the letter s" grammarmudge.com
"It" is being referred to the show. "It's" is showing the "it" (show) is owning something i.e. the last episode.

NBC really stinks. First you moved Law and Order all over the map this year because of your idiot move with Leno and Conan, and it was a disgrace. I still made sure to DVR L&O every Friday night, and then NBC changed it to Monday night. Now of course they are giving it the axe. I wonder what will be replacing it. I am sure it will be something ridiculous like a reality show that I will have no interest in watching, but will cost them roughly about 20 cents to make per episode. After all that was the hope with the whole Leno fiasco wasn't it. Pretty soon the networks might as well throw in the towel.

For the grammar police (Geez, nuttin better to do?) The rule here is simple: Possessive pronouns don't use apostrophes. His, hers, whose, yours, theirs, ours, its. If it's a possessive, it's spelled without an apostrophe.

FINALLY! The writing on L&O was so terrible this year that I could barely watch it. Better to go out while people are still watching than to remain on life support after the writing has gone down the toilet. The opening-scene one-liners haven't been the same since Jerry Orbach, and lately the courtroom scenes have usually ended with some completely implausible cross-examination meltdown that left me wondering whether I hadn't tuned in to a soap opera by mistake. I've been watching since the '90s, but nostalgia for the days when it was a well-written show was the only thing keeping L&O on my Tivo for the past year or so.

No, this is run down in a Washington Post article, which you can find online. It's not even really that close–apparently, TV seasons were longer then:

"At the end of its 20 seasons, "Gunsmoke" has churned out 635 episodes. At the end of its 20-year-run, "Law & Order" will have produced a paltry 456 episodes"

Those morons in charge up there screwed up every other good bit of programming the network had and now they have screwed this up too. I see why this network is having problems. They can't keep viewers because when they get something that works they have to go and fix it. Well they have lost one more viewer and I also understand that it doesn't matter to those executives because they are getting their big bonuses. That's all that matters to them.

I watched Law and Order during its earliest days, with Michael Moriarty, Chris Noth, George Dzundza...I had good times watching it with my Dad and enjoyed the show all of these years. A 21st season would've been an amazing accomplishment. You have failed so much in recent times, NBC. The other Law and Order versions are not comparable or as entertaining or as straightforward as the original. I really wish you would reconsider and allow Dick Wolf to produce a full season of Law and Order, not just a few episodes to fill in wherever you see fit. The biggest and most exciting change this year was when the two detectives shaved off their beards....and that's sad....they should study "24" to find out how to get some real excitement and interest going. Does this mean they will be canceling its 50 million spinoffs like SVU as well?? Don't worry L&Oers...there are enough episodes of this show to last the rest of your lives in syndication.

I can't believe the travesty of television today!!! First, I get the news that "24" is going of the air. But atleast Fox have the right frame of mind to put out a movie that should be nothing less then STELLAR. Now, NBC has gone and lost what's left of their civil minds and gotten rid of LAO. I like that TNT pickup comment. Maybe get a movement going because I'm gonna miss this one. NBC execs are officially nuts – this has been a pretty class show for the most part. Over the years, I've adjusted to cast tweaks and departures and now find myself looking forward to watching Linus dig himself out of all his self-made holes. He's such a wonderful twit and I'm going to miss him. And it's not like there's a lack of headlines for ideas – some pretty crazy stuff is going on. Seriously sorry to see this one go.

Wow, Law and Order has been my saving grace for "regular" tv. If it had not been for Law and Order or X-Files, I probably wouldn't have bothered watching non-cable tv the last 20 years. I agree with Renee who said, "I used to love Law and Order, but after the advent of great cable shows like Dexter, Deadwood, True Blood, Big Love, Oz, Nurse Jackie, etc., these shows just become inane." I would just add The Wire and The Sopranos to that list. All I can say is if they cut SVU, I'll officially be done with "regular" tv.

Another clarification on why this is, John...

Possesive forms of proper names like "John" or "Kate" have apostrophes, i.e. "John's" and "Kate's". However, "its" goes right along with other possesive pronouns like "his" and "hers". No apostrophe.

I'll lay off the subject of correcting someone's correct grammar incorrectly. I think you've had enough:) Strangely, "someone's" is also a possesive pronoun but has an apostrophe. I give up:) English is confusing.

And I see that CNN made the change. Hooray for grammar nazis!

GUNSMOKE was the longest running drama on CBS. (20 years), L&O has had a great run and maybe Dick Wolf wants it to go out while it still on top, like so many other great TV programming: M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore, Frasier, etc. Buy your boxed sets now and watch them on DVD. Tacky reality shows suck like "Biggest Loser," Bachelorette," "Wife Swap," cheap to produce and mindless. I stopped watching standard Network TV fair years ago and now when I have time I only watch shows on cable like National Geographic, Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, BIOGRAPHY – shows where you can learn something educational and be informed, although they have their crap too, like "Jon&Kate Make 8" – trash! "19 & Counting", Oh come on sorry, but the Mom is a human puppy mill. The Duggars need to be spayed and neutered respectively. What, are they starting their own Country? Just remember the good times with L&O and maybe A&E will pick up the re-runs.

Bummer....I started watching reruns on TNT/USA network, then got hooked on SVU, followed by the "original". Such a great show, with very compelling characters. Even though DA's, Detectives have changed over the years, the actors were very strong, and you grew to like the new guys soon enough. Very disappointing, especially after they fired all of the best actors on L&O, Criminal Intent. I hear they planned to have the DA (de la Garza) end the season leaving a bar with someone...a one night stand...and that she comes back next season pregnant...she is in real life. As she was single and unattached, it would have made for a very interesting story line, especially if she had gone off with Linus Roche's character...another good one bites the dust. I'll enjoy the last 3 episodes...

Nice one, NBC. Kill the last show that had a chance of anchoring your primetime schedule after that Leno fiasco. SVU has just deteriorated to a cheap CSI knockoff, and the rest of the schedule is dime-a-dozen sitcoms and bad reality tv, even by reality tv standards. But I doubt that we ever will since these types of shows make the simpletons that watch them feel intelligent. You think you're so clever sitting there as the scripted TV show feeds you clues and you "solve" them right along with the characters. Or you feel empowered watching the lawyers defend the victim on yet another lame scripted law show. Of you feel like a hero watching that medical drama–you feel the pain, the anguish, the satisfaction of going through the patients mysteriously–yet scripted–medical drama. For me, it means that they do not want me as a viewer. No problem NBC, I'll be glad to part company with you. I can't believe this show is on. It 'Jumped the Shark' years ago. I guess the blue hairs and Grammar Nazis kept it alive so long.

To John: You're incorrect. Possessive case is "its." "It's" means "it is."

"It's" is a contraction for "it is". "Its" is the possessive pronoun. Get it?

    To "John",

The possessive form of that word is "its", no apostophe. "It's" is the conjunction of "it" and "is", which would not be correct here. Seriously, if you're going to try to correct somebody please try to be correct yourself.

The cast on right now is excellent and didn't deserve the treatment they received this past season to make room for the crapfest that was the Jay Leno Show. Thanks NBC for shooting yourself in the foot yet again.

I wish the networks would cancel the "reality" shows like Survivor, Biggest Loser, Wife Swap, Amazing Race, Bachelor, Bachelorette,...etc Pathetic people out for their 15 min of fame.

Hm, seems like they fixed 'Its', but I think checkyourself was correct. Its is the correct usage here. It's is the contraction for it is. Its is actually the possive.

Its last episode – would be the correct usage. Not it's (or it is) last episode....

Law & Order is the best show on TV. Good stories that challenge your view of the law and justice. I am done with watching TV... after Lost and Law & Order there's nothing interesting to watch

Hey TNT, here's your chance to swoop in and do what you did for SouthLAnd. Show that the cable networks are more relevant these days than the bloated "major networks" who don't listen to their audiences desires.

There has never, never been a successful tv show of any type set in LA (maybe Adam 12). It is uninteresting to anyone except people living in LA. Even the law and order episode that had a major part in LA was durable only because McCoy went there and reamed out the judge. Land and Order is about to jump the shark.

    John,

"checkyourself" is correct. The general rule is that an apostrophe is used to indicate possession, but this is not the case with "It." You should only use "It's" when you mean "It is" not when you mean possession.

Okay, I was wrong. They haven't fixed it. I wasn't, however, wrong about the usage of "It's" and "Its".

    to "John"

actually "its" is correct as the apostrophe is only used with that word to indicate a contraction of "it is". The correct possessive form is quite certainly "its" as in "grammar has lost its hold on people"

this is a very common confusion and of course the apostrophe is used elsewhere to indicate possession but not in the case of "its".

    it's =it is

John, if you're going to be a Grammar Nazi, at least know what you're talking about.

"It's" is a contraction of "it is".

"Its" is the possesive form of "it". It's an exception to the rule of possesives.

CNN's usage is wrong. Checkyourself is right.

John, with all due respect, you are wrong.

It's is a contraction meaning "it is"

The possessive form (belonging to IT) is actually "its."

Actually, checkyourself was correct, and CNN has since corrected the error. "It's" is a contraction of "It" and "is". "Its" is the possessive form of "It"...

Looks like money overtakes viewers choice. I've enjoyed this show and continue to enjoy it. I won't have much to watch when this goes off air.

I agree with a previous post. It was hard getting back after Jay Leno messed up the 10pm slot. I love the show and all the franchises. I hope that NBC will learn to truly negotiate as they will lose alot if the original is cancelled.
