‘The Daily Show’ gets the Roland touch

It was an all-ascot evening last night on "The Daily Show."

After repeatedly calling out Roland Martin for having the audacity to don an ascot during a news segment, "The Daily Show" host has joined Martin's ascot call to arms. Too bad Stewart was wearing it wrong for the first part of the show.

“Touche, Roland Martin,” the host said. “Turns out, it’s not so easy.” But he didn’t give up – Stewart continued to wear his golden ascot throughout the entire program, and at one point was joined by Senior British Person John Oliver….also wearing an ascot.

Oliver isn’t trying to become more American – in fact, he doesn’t even know who Roland Martin is. As he explained to Stewart, “I’m wearing this because chilly neck breezes are the leading killer of British people.”

Sadly, Stewart isn’t keeping the look for long. “Roland, I’m going back to ties, and do you know why Roland Martin? I’m not cool enough for this,” he said. “It is clear to me that only a cool man can pull this off and I am a loser.”

Why can't people criticize each others' politics with the same good humor these two are able to bring to their disagreement over fashion?

Just compare this to the O'Reilly/Stewart debacle(s). I understand that ascots are easier to be lighthearted about than, say, bullying, but I just wish someone could give many in the media (and its a tendency I've seen expressed more by the Right than by the Left, I have to day) lessons in grace and humor in the face of sometimes bitter disagreement: and use this interchange as a template.

Just like conservatives. They can't take 1 second to lighten up. You would think after devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile along with other negative events in the headlines, they could enjoy this article for what it is... comic relief. Of course nobody cares about an ascott. That's the beauty of it. and as far as fox beating out msnbc and cnn in the ratings... entertainment always trumps news in the ratings.. Take one minute to see how foxnews is classified and I'll bet you'll find the word entertainment there.. However, you can't really call it that since die har roghties take every word that comes from fox news as the gospel

Race card? Paint dry? You're kidding, right "char?" I think you're confusing The Daily Show with Glenn Beck's and Rush Limbaugh's and Bill O'Lielly's shows, where they never come out and actually SAY the "n-word," but you get their drift from the "code" they speak. The "code" understood by bigots and know-nothings. Martin looked utterly silly in that stupid ascot, and Stewart (cleverly) jumped all over it. Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly and Hannity only WISH they could be as entertaining. Of course, they'd have to first realize that that's all they are: ENTERTAINERS. And in their cases, not very good ones. They show here that it's true:

It's Poe vs. Freud. They both smoked the same opium, but Poe called his writings fiction. They're all entertainers but Stewart calls his show comedy and the others (on both sides of the aisle) call it truth. Get above it all, observe it from the outside and make up your own mind. Don't depend on Ed Schultz or Rush Limbaugh to tell you how to think. You supposedly left home so your parents wouldn't tell you what to do anymore. Why do you let the radio, Web and TV tell you what to do now? At least your mom made you a PBJ once in awhile! What has the TV made for you lately?
I watch the Daily Show because he's an equal opportunity insulter. We are a silly people sometimes and he reminds us of that daily. Great show!

Don't throw bones at dogs that you do not want to keep around. Just ignore the political coat-tail riding fringe and their one track minds. They're trolls by any other name, just like the "This this news?" crew (who constantly and selfishly fail to understand not all news is based on their interests alone).

To all of you right-wingers: Jon Stewart is a comedian who happens to host a faux news comedy show. He has never and does not advertise himself as a journalist or reporter or political commentator and yet he has more integrity and honesty than all of the FOX news talking heads put together. He is not one sided and biased like the O'Reillys, Hannitys, Becks and Limbaughs. He calls it like it is without spin or partisanship. He's self-deprecating, intelligent, humble and honest which are qualities absent in those mentioned previously. It must gall you people that someone who isn't even trying to be serious at all has more clout than the whole neocon cavalcade. Stewart calls out anyone and everyone who deserves it regardless of their liberal/conservative stance and while there are some liberal commentators who walk the party line, he doesn't have to carry anyone else's water but his own.

Only liberals, huh, Heather? As a registered independent, I'd like to play devil's advocate and point out that I've seen Bill O'Reilly interview Glen Beck and the only thing missing is a reach around! Quit kidding yourself with your bull$#!@ partisan viewpoint. Whenever a talk show personality has a guest appearance to their "ideological" liking, it's an a$$-smooch-a-thon on both sides of the political aisle.
Oh, and I've watched The Daily Show for almost 10 years now and John is on top of his game. The show's ratings are indicative of that.

c'mon guys....i mean really. can't you people even stop long enough to just laugh about two people who don't take themselves too seriously about a silly issue. i can't stand people who always put a damper on everyone else's fun. it's all in fun....whether you agree with roland martin or not. he is in no way a bad journalist. he simply gives his take on issues which he cares about, as do they all. if you don't agree, that's o.k. but name-calling.....please, please, get over yourselves. i'm reminded of a story the late richard pryor told some years ago...he recounted an ocassion where he had a disagreement with a caucasian man in a bar. richard was merely interested in settling the argument and moving on. in the course of the back and forth between the two, the man called richard the n-word. i remember the hurt look in his eyes as he stated that all he wanted to do was talk to the man who couldn't even do that without reducing him to something less than a human being. so c'mon people, there are lot more serious issues out there. take a break and have a laugh sometime. that was funny!!!!

The ascot is something that an impeccable dresser can pull off. Roland Martin's shirt collars are too small to get around his fat neck, so he wears an ascot. His jackets are too small for him and his pants are too long. A man his size can't dress off the rack. He seriously needs a tailor. Roland, spend the extra money and get custom fitting.
