"Welcome to the Hollywood Walk of... oops!"

I'm a longtime copy editor, and I take the Metro to work.  As a result, I made one person laugh hysterically today, and another almost vomit.

Let me explain.

As I emerged from the Hollywood and Vine Metro station this morning and headed for the CNN Los Angeles bureau, I noticed two workmen cleaning off the newest star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the 11:30 a.m. unveiling ceremony.  It was for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, star of "The New Adventures of Old Christine" – and the first "Seinfeld" alum to receive a star on the Walk of Fame.  I glanced at it as I walked by... then stopped, and peered more closely:

"Um, excuse me," I said to the workmen, "but I'm pretty sure that star is missing an O.  And a hyphen."

They were startled, and a little unsure what to do – after all, the ceremony was in four hours, and you can't just print up a new star at the local CopyMart.  I snapped a pic with my BlackBerry, then hustled to work and called Ana Martinez-Holler, the press rep for the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  "Are you sure?" she gasped, and then, understandably, she hurried off the phone.

A couple of hours later, Ana called me back.  "Is everything okay?" I asked.  "Well, I almost puked in my car, but otherwise, yeah," she replied.  It turns out Louis-Dreyfus thought the mistake was hysterical, and wanted them to leave it, but they'd already chiseled out the "Luis" and put a temporary "Louis-" in its place for the unveiling.  It wasn't shiny and perfect, but at least they got her name right.

Ana said they're going to give the "Luis" to Julia as a memento.  I was kind of hoping for that souvenir, but at least I've played a small part in Walk of Fame history... and have a reason to smile every time I walk to and from the Metro station each day.

I think David Daniel personally handled the "situation" quite well. He didn't make a big scene out of it and made sure the mistake was corrected. He didn't criticize Hollywood or the people that was responsible for the error. If it wasn't for him, Julia Louis-Dreyfus probably wouldn't notice the mistake until later. Hollywood is lucky to have these kind of editors surrounding them.

I became disillusioned with the HWF when they gave a star to Vanna White. It obviously has nothing to do with acting ability or number of years in the business. Now I'm embarrassed for the rare stars that had true staying-power, like Cary Grant and Betty Davis, that their names have been lumped in with the likes of someone who turns letters on a game show.

After much soul-searching, and a can of soda, I have decided to launch a campaign to get a star on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame" for Harriet Davis, Ann B. Davis's sister. Of course we all know about her replacement work on the Brady Bunch after Ann's tragic demise, but Harriet also had a slew of other television roles, including:

-housekeeper of Gladys and Abner Kravitz (neighbors of Samantha and Darrin Stevens) on Bewitched.

-housekeeper of Mike Douglas (eldest son from My Three Sons) after he moved out of his father's house unexpectedly, never to be heard from again.

-housekeeper of the voodoo witchdoctor from season 1 of Gilligan's Island.

Clearly nobody played a housekeeper like Harriet Davis (except maybe Ann B. Davis) and for this tireless work she should be honored alongside her Hollywood peers.

I love the amateur quarterbacking. No, not anyone can just plop down 5 grand, and voila! Given most stars have um, a spare $5000 or two sitting around, wouldn't you expect to see just a few more showing up – daily? – if that were the case?

No, the Hollywood Walk of Fame Committee yearly draws up a nomination list. The nominees, if accepted, have to agree to attend an awards ceremony within 5 years, and the actual placing and maintenance currently costs $25,000 – paid not by the celebrity, but by movie studios (e.g., those who can use the publicity to benefit an upcoming release, etc.), or other concerns, even fan clubs.

It isn't quite the idea of "any old celebrity" wanting 15 more minutes of fame, plopping down the dough, and presto! Self-aggrandisement!

Well, that goes without saying RC–just ask Sam the Butcher. And I have it on good authority that she was a terrific speller as well. She placed tops in her 2nd grade spelling test on Monday, October 9th, 1933. When she got home, that top score paper went straight up on the refrigerator door.

Unfortunately later that afternoon, Ann's sister Harriet covered up Ann's paper with one of her own–a picture of a green horsey with purple hooves eating a birthday cake. This was the start of bitter feud that lasted the rest of their lives, but everyone knows all about that already.

It makes no difference at all if a person has their name on the "Walk of Fame". How many people stop and read them? They get a day of media coverage when they get their star, then it is old news. Fame is maintained in other ways, like having produced work that future generations respect. Not by having a star in concrete.

Someone indeed has to pay for the stars (either the nominee or his studio or fans or someone who just likes spending money), but you don't get one just by agreeing to pay for it. There are only about 12 a year added, and before it ever gets to the paying part, a performer has to be nominated by an acceptable party (studio, fan club, agents, etc.) and APPROVED by the Chamber of Commerce. With only 12 or so a year, they turn down hundreds of nominations knowing full well there's money to pay for them. AFTER the nomination is approved, they find out whether anyone's willing to pony up the money. If not, they move on to someone else.

As to misspellings: my favorite was the puzzler Maurice Diller. His star mystified people for decades before it was realized that it was actually intended to honor silent film director Mauritz Stiller. I think they finally fixed it.

ARE YOU REALLY SO NAIVE AND STUPID that you actually brought this to their attention and bothered them during their work with something they have no control over and can do nothing about???

Let's get back the point here–by which I mean Ann B. Davis. Now St. Pete Bill above should be congratulated on his quick use of Wikipedia to look up the "facts", but I think we all know how unreliable that source can be.

In truth, Ann B. Davis died during the taping of the famous "volcano episode" of the Brady Bunch, when Peter's volcano ejected an unexpectedly large mass of real lava. The lava was actually thrown to the top of the Brady house and then burned down through the house right above the kitchen where Alice was busy preparing Bananas Foster. In fact, this terrible accident was re-crafted for the acid burning scene in the hit movie Alien.

From then on, Ann B. Davis was replaced by her twin sister Harriet for the remainder of the series. A tragic loss for America indeed.

Joe, I throw in with the anti-comma crowd. The conjunctive in this instance serves not to join two independent clauses (in which case the comma would be necessary), but rather to indicate a compound verb. As for the stylistic use of the comma, I'd rather he had left it out. It simply doesn't sound right to me.

Joe, you're grammatically correct (there are two objects of the helping verb-verb combination "made vomit" that are separated by the simple conjunctive "and," and thus the sentence does not call for a comma following the "and"), but Mr. Daniel appears to have placed his comma for effect to serve as a caesura and, thus, seems to have wished to impart a speech-imitative pause, for effect, as here. Such is all right when one obviously understands "the rules" but, for the sake of style, purposefully disobeys them.

As for the story, it's pretty darned funny, and one should appreciate the wonderfully open-minded - and expected - reaction of Dreyfus.

As long as we are wasting our valuable time here, I'd like to know who fills out the application form with the actors name, the agent!.

Who sends the name to the engraver (the illiterate administrative assistant for the organization)? Who gives the exact spelling to the engraver and in what format (hand-written off an email without checking the spelling?

Oh yea, you know, Glori Estifan (I just love her) and you know Julia Luis Dreyfus (that cute little bug eyed manipulator).

This should be a much bigger story. If LA and the west-side including Hollywood rakes in the big tourist bucks where everyone goes at least once to be photographed at the Grauman's Chinese Theater and read the stars names, the least they can do is spell them correctly.

There should be a full investigation to determine what percentage of the names are spelled incorrectly. You can't go by their onsite list because they are spelled correctly.

I am simply appalled at this lack of quality control and quality assurance. Are you all with me on this..............OK..... let our voices be heard!

FYI and in response to Mb above –Ann B. Davis (Schultzy to those of us old enough to remember her first role) is not now and was not a native of Guadalajara, she was born May 5, 1926 in Schenectedy, NY. She's still alive, by the way, at age 84 and lives in Leon, Texas. Did you know she has an identical twin named Harriet?

Of course everyone knows that Ann B. Davis' true merit derives from her service rendered to this country during WWII–by which I mean the Water Wars of Isabela Island. I am sure everyone remembers how she used discarded tortoise egg shells to collect rain water and then used that water to grow a fig tree. Once mature, that tree provided shade for a nearly extinct Galapagos creature that helped prove Darwin's theory of evolution. The fact that Ann B. Davis is rarely mentioned in today's elementary science texts is an incredible injustice.

PR? As in Puerto Rico? No, but that is a common misunderstanding about Ann B. Davis. Her heritage is from the Spanish Main, and not the West Indies. In fact, in one famous "lost episode" of the Brady Bunch, Alice and the Bradys visit Cholula where Alice saves the day inside an Aztec pyramid by whipping up her famous pozoli soup to win over a Nauhatl-speaking chieftain.

As a fellow copy editor, I feel your pain! I'm always catching typos on billboards, dedication plaques - and CNN news crawls! My "skill" came in handy one time. Without naming names there was this fellow who was claiming to have been a longtime member of a famous rock and roll band of the 1950s. He claimed up and down that he was, and that he had performed on one of the most famous rock and roll recordings ever. He even had a dedication plaque to prove it. The fact a crucial word on the plaque wasn't spelled correctly sort of gave the game away for the fellow!

Why would anyone confuse a Blog with News??? New disrespect to David here, I think this was great and Hollywood can laugh at itself with the best of them.
But for some commentors on here to take a blog so serious as to confuse it with news is rather frightening. One of our greatest problems isn't perhaps the easy access to media these days but that anyone can publish something and have people think it is the word of god him/herself!
This was a more than appropriate blog post, if you want news dealing with more "pressing matters" go to the CNN homepage :) .
As to why some people have stars and some don't? a variety of reasons exist...did you know that jack nicholson doesn't want one? or that Mel Brooks was nominated years ago but never scheduled a ceremony. You have 5 years from when you are selected to have the ceremony and then you start the process over.
So many people are quick to whine and complain without ever knowing the whole story.

    Nomination process

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame Committee is responsible for selecting a new group of entertainers each year to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. New recipients are announced each June for the following year. In order for a person to get a star on the Walk of Fame, he or she must agree to attend a presentation ceremony within five years of selection, and a fee (currently $25,000, up from $15,000) must be paid to the Trust; some of it ($5,000 of $15,000 in December 2003) is set aside for maintenance and repair, with the rest going towards the installation, security, publicity, and staging costs.[9]

The fee is often paid by sponsors such as film studios and record companies, as part of the publicity for a release with which the honoree is involved;[9] as Johnny Grant pointed out in 2006: "These studios, when they want a star and they've got a picture opening, they'd give you $100,000".[2] On other occasions, the fee is paid by a fan club.[2]
