Kelly Clarkson concert banned in Jakarta

An Indonesian Islamic organization is saying an upcoming concert by Kelly Clarkson in Jakarta is banned under Islamic law because it is being sponsored by a tobacco company, according to a report Wednesday in the Jakarta Globe.

Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in the world’s most populous Muslim country, has previously declared all smoking forbidden under Islam, according to the Globe report.

The head of the organization’s fatwa, or religious edict, department, Yanuar Ilyas, told the Globe that the no-smoking fatwa applied to Clarkson’s concert.

“We do not need to put another fatwa on a thing that is already clear,” the Globe quoted Yanuar as saying.

The U.S.-based campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has also raised objections to the Clarkson’s Jakarta concert, scheduled for April 29 and sponsored by L.A. Lights cigarettes. The organization is asking Clarkson to cancel the sponsorship.

"If Kelly Clarkson goes ahead with this concert, she is choosing to be a spokesperson for the tobacco industry and helping them to market cigarettes to children," said the president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Matthew L. Myers. "If she rejects tobacco industry sponsorship, she can send a powerful message to children in Indonesia and around the world that they, too, should reject the tobacco industry's deadly products and marketing."

While many nations do not allow tobacco sponsorships of entertainment events, Indonesia has yet to sign on to such a ban, according to the campaign.

Clarkson’s fans are weighing in on her Facebook page, posting numerous comments calling on her to drop the tobacco sponsor.

But in a blog posting attributed to the singer Wednesday afternoon, she says her only option would be to drop the tour date, something she cannot do without disappointing her Jakarta fans.

“This is a lose-lose situation for me and I am not happy about it but the damage has been done and I refuse to cancel on my fans,” says the posting titled “Jakarta Mishap” and signed “Kelly.”

Concerts tours are very expensive, there is no way the artist can afford to pay for the tour themselves not even a single night. The corporate sponsor spends more money putting on the show than the return from ticket sales. So if you really feel a need to "get back" at the sponsor then go to the show, enjoy the show, but don't buy the sponsors product.

And stop issuing "religious decrees". What is wrong with people anymore?

If she is taking the money from a tobacco company as a sponsor, that is the same as endorsing their product and endorsing cigarettes is an awful thing for her to be doing. She is showing her fans – mostly impressionable teenagers – that she likes this product and they should too. That is the message that the kids will get whether she wants to admit it or not. That is the reason that companies use famous people in their advertisements.

it's not true, that she's banned because the tobacco company sponsored her concert. She was suggested to cancel her concert because the sponsor for her concert is a tobacco company (which she's not realized earlier) and more concern on youngster's health. Now the tobacco company cancelled their sponsorship and her concert will be held in Jakarta.

Isn't music prohibited in Islam? So why does Indonesia have concerts coming? If they sell tobacco there, they should not get a visa to come there. In the US alcohol and tobacco are legal and then people complain when drunks and druggies drive and cause harm to others...it makes no sense. And it makes no sense that an Islamic country would allow haram but somehow think that it would be less haram if tobacco were prohibited?

Hey please can everybody cool it? Islam in the Prophet times preaches peace, just like Christianity. They believe in a single God, just like Christianity. If you all are open to the teachings of Islam, then you will understand that the only deluded people are those radicals and governments who misuse and misintepret these teachings in order to control its people. Mankind is not perfect. Noone is perfect. Noone in the right mind wants any bloodshed. We steer off the religious road from time to time. For both christians and muslims. This does not mean that Muslims around the world condone such acts of violence. They are merely victims and pawns to both political and social advances or violences. No race or religion deserves this kind of disrespect. So, please please please respect ALL religions! Focus on the real issue; was Clarkson notified by her management about the sponsorship?

Smoking is a legal activity that some people enjoy. If parents don't want their children possibly exposed to a few signs at the event they can keep them home. That is the responsiblity of the parent. Society does not have to parent for you. Most of those attending will be adults over the age of 18 and they have the right to see a concert sponsored by any company they wish. It's called liberty. Those who may want to attend under the age of 18 all have parents who can make the decision as to whether or not they will attend. No need for fascist censorship. It is amazing how many people want to live in a totalitarian society.

Just being overdramatic for some people who are attacking Islam directly. It's definitely uncalled for. Hitler represents a common enemy of the world.

Anyways, I concur that smoking should be banned. It's definitely an effective means. However, Kelly stated that she didn't realize the situation. Her management is solely to be blamed, but i guess no one would really know what happened behind the scenes. A lesson learnt for Miss Clarkson.

I am not the most devout Muslim in world (and I am considering being a Christian), but I know one thing – Islam does NOT advocate war! They promote peace and inter-religious existance on this shared planet of ours. So if those Islam haters want to blame all terrorist activities linking to Islam, then blame those radicals who destroy the image of Islam. Shouldn't we be finding a way to throw these people in the slammer, instead of trying to eliminate all Muslims? If elimination is what people in Western community are thinking, then they are not any better than Hitler trying to ethnic cleanse the world from Jews. After all this time, we should be bonding as a human race instead of trying to segregrate based on faiths and religious beliefs. We are facing turmoils and catastrophes in the natural environment and we must unite. Try to understand all differences, instead of being against it. If not, I guess mankind hasn't evolved at all since its inception.

I think that she only has a certain degree of control on these things and definitely has a whole lot on her plate. Rhetorically i mean. Her management should have anticipated such predicaments and consequences arising from such relations to the the tobacco company. However, she must also be sensitive to these implications. But everyone has to consider that she is just human, like all other celebrities, we all make mistakes and we try to ammend those mistakes the best we could. I think she is genuinely trying to take neccessary actions, but one must consider that these sponsors have a certain contract that sometimes could cost a whole lot or is difficult to break away from.

Cigarette sponsor pulled from Kelly Clarkson showThe Associated Press, April 22, 2010
    Related: News, Kelly Clarkson
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Pop star Kelly Clarkson's upcoming concert in Indonesia will no longer be sponsored by a cigarette company, the promoter said Thursday following protests from fans and anti-tobacco groups.

Clarkson, a past American Idol winner, had previously said that while she was surprised to learn that billboards announcing her April 29 concert in Jakarta were prominently branded with the logo of the popular cigarette L.A. Lights, the show would go on with the controversial sponsorship.

"I refuse to cancel on my fans," she wrote in a posting on her blog. She added that she's not a
smoker and does not advocate it.

Though Clarkson initially indicated that the sponsorship could not be pulled, promoter Adrie Subono said that his company Java Musikindo had reached a "final agreement" with cigarette company Djarum, the maker of L.A. Lights, and the sponsorship had been
canceled. He said it would take one or two days to remove all the billboards and pull other advertisements, including those on TV.

"There will be no (L.A. Lights) media promotion at the Kelly Clarkson concert," Subono told The Associated Press.

Attacking Indonesia as unfriendly to women is pure ignorant. It might be in Saudi where even driving is outlawed for women. We have women cab driver, gas attendant, finance minister and at one point in the past a woman president (not a very good one, but that's a different matter). Arab is generally anti women. Islam does not mean Arab.

Why Jakarta, Indonesia is the 5th most populous country in the world. You need people to market your stuff, it would be stupid to ignore market that size.

As for Muhammadiyah, well people are free to not listen to them. Banning is not an accurate term here. They have no power to ban anything. The media use "ban" to attract attention.

In order to have integrity as an artist, you should be able to flip those who write your paycheck. Reading the posts here makes me less convinced about some
of Richard Dawkins' arguments. I think bad atheists are just as
    dangerous as religious fanatics.

The tobacco fatwas by some Indonesian Muslim organizations
were the result of lobbying from anti-smoking groups (both
domestic and international) who realize that fatwas will carry
    some political weight.

I don't understand the logic in some posters. Because
smoking is a problem in Indonesia they shouldn't try to
combat it? Hmmm. What is so hypocrite about trying combat a
problem? There are many big problems in Indonesia
including corruption, overcrowding and pollution. Luckily,
extremism is not a big problem yet.

They don't do beheadings nor honor killings in Indonesia.
And what is this comment about fatwas against terrorism?
Muhammadiyah and most other major Muslim organizations
in Indonesia don't think fatwas are needed because in their
view, terrorism is already clearly forbidden by the Qur'an. And the
vast majority of Indonesians, Muslims and non-Muslims, are

So, it is wrong for a singer to have a tobacco sponsor but no one cares if a singer has a beer/alcohol sponsor?

I go to concerts sponsored by liquor companies and see the singer raise a toast and the entire crowd then drinks... and most of those in the audience drive home afterwards.

Doesn't just end with music... look at all the Super Bowl alcohol ads. I bet teenagers watch the Super Bowl too. Maybe they should be banned from that?

Imagine if some nutball like Pat Robertson were running this country – what kind of laws would all you have to comply with? To think that they (the other – the Muslims) are the bad ones and we are the good ones is to engage in a pure form of exceptionalism: our rules aren't wacky, illogical, old-fashioned, arbitrary, etc. – why? because we're GOOD!

Ok, so let me see if I have this straight. Islamic clerics are banning Kelly Clarkson's concert because it is sponsored by a cigarette company. This cigarette company is based in Indonesia where it is legal to promite tobacco products on TV, billboards, and in magazines. So, they are legally able to sponsor a concert. So, rather than working to change the laws in their country, the Muslims of Indonesia are banning an artist (who according to her had no knowledge that her concert was going to be sponsored by a tobacco company). Talk about misplaced priorities and backward logic.

Hooked on phonics people. An Indonesian Islamic organization has issued the "fatwa" in question. It doesn't necessarily pertain to all of Islam, just Indonesia, and among whom look to this particular body for their religious guidance. Much like the Mormon church saying 'no alcohol'. This move by an Islamic organization is simply about not letting the young people see a woman in a dominant position.

Even the woman warrior who in battle was continuously saving Mohammad's life was supposed to be submissive to him (I forget her name).

In Islamic society women are supposed to be docile in public – cover themselves and be submissive. They may be the dominate one in private especially if they are the older one but not in public.

As many have mentioned muslims seem to smoke as much as any other religion and certainly more than mormons.

    Controversial Clarkson Sponsorship Deal Extinguished

There is unlikely to be any post coital cigarette smoking after it was announced on Thursday that the brief yet fiery relationship between US Singer Kelly Clarkson and an Indonesian tobacco company had been stubbed out.

Adrie Subono, CEO of music promoter JAVA Musikindo, told the Jakarta Globe that it had severed its relationship with PT Djarum and its brand LA Lights and confirmed the concert on April 29 would go ahead without “its main sponsor.”

Adrie said all offending billboards and other promotional material featuring Clarkson and LA Lights had been removed.

He did not say how much the move was likely to cost the company.

“This is Java’s commitment to Clarkson and her fans,” he said, adding that the company had done everything according to the correct procedures.

Clarkson’s upcoming concert at the Senayan Indoor Tennis Stadium on April 29 became the focus of criticism after it became clear that Djarum were backing it.

Huge billboards promoting the concert feature the Grammy Award winner — who shot to fame after winning the first season of American Idol — with a logo of the LA Lights cigarettes just above her head.

Muhammadiyah, the country’s second-largest Islamic group with about 30 million members, has declared smoking haram, or forbidden under Islam.

It said all things related to smoking — including the concert — were also forbidden.

“We do not need to put out another fatwa [religious edict] on a thing that is already clear,” Yunahar Ilyas, who heads Muhammadiyah’s fatwa department, told the Jakarta Globe.

Even the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI), which considers smoking undesirable but not forbidden, says young people would be wise to avoid the concert that was certain to be used to promote the habit.

Writing on blog.kellyclarkson.com, the artist said she had no idea that PT Djarum brand L.A. Lights was sponsoring her Jakarta concert.

I was not made aware of this and am in no way an advocate or an ambassador for youth smoking. I’m not even a smoker, nor have I ever been.”

She said she was going ahead with the concert because of her fans.

Sure smoking is bad but a country shouldn't be able to dictate what the people watch for entertainment or their sponsors. She would be there if not sponsored by a tobacco company but it isn't worth it. Stand up Kelly and do the right thing. Tell them to take their views and shove it. You can't need the money that bad. Then just dropt he tobacco sponsorship. You don't need that anyway.

I spoke with a friend of mine in Jakarta this morning, and he explained that fatwas are issued ALL the time. However, the Indonesian people are extremely tolerant and pay little to no attention to such declarations.

He stated the concert WILL go on, and he has already purchased his ticket.

You can chose to smoke or not to smoke...if someone is that easily influenced to smoke because a company sponsers a concert, then they have some serious problems. Why comment on Kellly's weight...who cares. Someone said Sarah Palin is a Muslim on this...come on do you have to use every story to make some kind of comment about Sarah Palin...once again who cares...Oh wait maybe you want the US government to control everything...well, your comments about Palin would still be allowed but not about King Barack.

So sick of people harping on anyone who does not agree with their "thing of the moment". First smoking is glamorized, people get hooked, then they are demonized. Check! Then we have the fast food joints popping up, they get promoted, and folks start getting fat and unhealthy. Then, of course, they are demonized for being fat and unhealthy. Check! The advertising folks are laughing at everyone and raking in the dollars, puffed up with their own power. I see a trend to demonize everyone not at the top of the pile. I'll stay at home with my cigerets and my home grown veggies. I smoke but I'm skinny. Guess that makes me a half-demon. OK, no problem, I'll just be the unicorn! One-horned demons are, what, half as scary? NO...the moronic masses who buy into whatever is popular are scarier than hell at it's deepest level.

Smoking is a big problem in Indonesia. Cigarettes are very cheap (a dollar or two a pack) and often have cloves in them which increases their addictiveness. I can understand Muslim authorities being concerned that the concert focused on youth is being sponsored by a tobacco company. They don't want their children being seduced into thinking that smoking is a good idea, particularly with clove cigarettes being so easy to obtain and hard to quit.

If only we lived in a country where people had certain freedoms. I wish there was a place where people have the freedom to choose any LEGAL organization to promote their product. Wait a minute.....there is such a place. It's America, the place where we (ok, some of us) live. Clarkson can get anybody she wants to promote her tour. It won't influence anyone as to wether or not to go to her show. If you're a fan, you'll want to go, and the sponsor won't make a difference. If you don't like her, you won't go, no matter how much you like the sponsor. This isn't going to make kids more susceptible to start smoking. You either will or you won't. (And it isn't all parenting, either. Some of it, but not all)Do you think people would stop going to football games if the main sponsor was Pepsi, instead of Budweiser? If they stopped selling Bud at the game, that'd be another argument......However, this argument only applies to her American tour dates. Since we're talking about a differnt country with different laws, that's different. I realize we're not talking about a law, but respecting and not judging the customs of others is important. Especially if they do not respect ours. It shows how much better than them we are (that last part's a joke).

Regardless of how anyone feels about this issue, Ms. Clarkson has a legally binding contract that obligates her to perform at every stop on her scheduled tour. She will be sued (and lose everything) if she cancels her performance. She will not be sued (or couldn't possibly lose a lawsuit) if she is not responsible for not being able to perform. All she can do at this point is wait to see if the show is shut-down by another party, and show up with extra security, if it isn't. Her hands are (legally) tied. As far as I'm concerned, people that are so stupid as to think their children are going to smoke just because of advertising, shouldn't take their children to the concert. Children don't pay attention to advertising, unless it's toys or cereal or candy. Parents (as mine did) have the power to teach their children that they can't have what they want. As far as advertising goes, I'd rather return to the days of my youth, when cigarette advertising was allowed on TV, but condoms, Rx drugs, various birth control devices, and ambulance chasing lawyers were not. Several times every single day, I cringe, hearing a TV commercial spouting that a birth control pill does not treat STDs, including HPV, AIDS, etc. How could ANYONE be so flaming stupid?

Bull! This is more about whoever is controling the cigarette market over there not wanting another product having more promotion over their product coming in. Plain and simple. And yes many Muslims smoke like a freight train, be it hash or tobacco (maybe not all but many do). Its always about territory or money. Faith was just being used as an excuse (In this case). As for Muslim beliefs; get it straight with your own people first...don't preach it to us till your own house is in order. Islam is always a peaceful religion according to you people (on every forum) after one of your flock went out and blew innocent people up.

It's silly to believe devote this much attention to one specific Muslim group as if it is representative of all Islamdom. The fact of the matter is that many, many, many Muslims smoke, including Muslims who consider themselves to be and who are considered to be pious Muslims. However it is true that if devout Muslims drink alcohol they are aware that it is alcohol consumption is widely frowned upon in Islam. In any case, giving credence to one particular group as having the authority to speak for Muslims is like saying one particular group of, let us say for example, Mormons has the authority to say that all Christians must be celibate before marriage, never be unfaithful to their spouses, and that it is okay to commit acts of violence against doctors who perform abortions–and that such a group could be representative of all Christendom (including Catholics).

I suggest you guys read the article below, before making any negative posts here, yes, It' may be double standards, but whatever it is,.It's been very concerning the depth of consuming cigarettes in Indonesia and I think it's a good move for an influenced organization in that country to "ban" smoking....:

“Indonesia is a big concern, a big epidemic, a big population, and very little control,” said Dr. Prabhat Jha, a tobacco control expert at the University of Toronto’s Center for Global Health Research. “They have a chaotic taxation and regulatory structure. They have made the mistake of letting the Marlboro Man into the country.”In recent months, anti-tobacco forces have rallied. A new health law has declared smoking addictive and urged the government to hammer out tobacco regulations. An anti-smoking coalition is pushing for tighter restrictions on smoking in public places, advertising bans and bigger health warnings on cigarette packages.

Public debate also exploded last month after Indonesia’s second-largest Islamic organization, Muhammadiyah, issued a fatwa banning smoking. Though not legally binding, the religious ruling does put pressure on smokers in the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

IF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GET UPSET AND ANGRY OVER ONE OF KELLY CLARKSON'S CONCERTS BEING SPONSORED BY A TOBACCO COMPANY...

THEN THEY ALL MIGHT AS WELL GET UPSET AND ANGRY AT THE MOM NEXT DOOR, SPREADING 'KRAFT' MAYO ON HER SON'S SANDWICH.

HUNDREDS OF PRODUCTS MOST OF US USE ON A DAILY BASIS, ARE OWNED BY TOBACCO COMPANIES!!!!!!

(IF YOU WERE NOT ALREADY AWARE OF THIS)

AND KRAFT IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY COMPANIES THAT THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY OWNS!!!

EVEN SOME OF THE ANTI-SMOKING CAMPAIGNS ARE RUN AND FUNDED BY TOBACCO COMPANIES!

...NICOTINE GUM AND OTHER PRODUCTS USED FOR TRYING TO QUIT SMOKING ARE MOST LIKELY FUNDED BY THEM AS WELL,
-HENCE THEY MUST BE A CUSTOMER OR HAVE SOME SORT OF DEAL WITH AT LEAST ONE TOBACCO COMPANY IN ORDER TO GET SOME OF THE NICOTINE THEY USE IN THEIR PRODUCTS.

CARTIER JEWELRY IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY, OWNED BY A BIG TOBACCO COMPANY.
WALMART IS ALSO ONE OF THE TOBACCO INDUSTRYS NUMBER ONE CUSTOMERS, HENCE MAJORITY OF THE JEWELRY AND PRODUCT THEY SELL THERE IS OWNED AND DISTRUSTED BY A BIG TOBACCO COMPANY!

YOU MIGHT AS WELL RETHINK 'STARBUCKS' COFFEE
BECAUSE KRAFT DISTRIBUTES TO THEM TOO!

SO I HOPE THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE UPSET OVER THIS 'KELLY CLARKSON' ISSUE, HAVE INTEGRITY.
    MEANING:

-YOU AT LEAST HAVE NONE OF THESE TOBACCO SUPPORTING PRODUCTS IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD, OR CONSUME THEM IN YOUR DAILY LIVES.

(WHICH I MIGHT ADD, IS KINDA HARD TO 'NOT' DO) :)

OTHERWISE, IT WOULD ONLY BE FAIR TO SAY, YOU ARE JUST AS BAD, IF NOT WORSE (BASED ON HOWEVER MANY YEARS CONSUMED) REGARDLESS OF HOW SMALL OR HOW MUCH SPENT, ONE THING IS MOST CERTAIN:

YOU ARE STILL SUPPORTING THESE BIG TOBACCO INDUSTRIES!

I would not set one big toe into that country. You could easily do something that might offend the authorities. They just passed a law this week that upholds the "blasphemy" rule about offending Islam. You could get 3 years or more for saying that Muhammad smoked weed or Muhammad is not real. These pathetic souls are doing more harm than good in a pitiful effort to elevate religion higher and higher and higher until everyone has to pray all day long and nothing else gets done. I do agree that cigarettes are bad for you, but smoke in moderation and please moderate your religion. God has not spoken to you and you are not "all-knowing". Accept that fact and give me a light.

Before making rude comments, one should do a little research on
    Indonesia and Islam in Indonesia.

Indonesia is not formally an Islamic country, although almost 9 out
of 10 Indonesians claim to be Muslims, and divorces must go
    through religious courts.

Indonesians in general (and by extension Muslims in Indonesia)
are tolerant. (I would say they are so tolerant that corruption is
allowed to reign free, but that's a another topic.) The two biggest
Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah are
    therefore quite moderate.

Smoking is a problem in Indonesia, and the tobacco lobby in
Indonesia is very powerful. That is why Indonesia has not
signed on to ban tobacco sponsorships.

Fatwas by big Islamic organizations are not legally binding
but do carry some political weight. Before declaring that
tobacco smoking is "haram", they weigh the pros and cons
of tobacco and decided that the cons far outweigh the pros,
so the fatwa is not without base.

I do not necessarily agree with all the fatwas, but in this
case I laud Muhammadiyah. Of course you are free to
agree or disagree with this, but please base your comments
    on actual facts.

I'm going to defend Kelly again here.

It is really not her decision to drop the sponsorship, because the agreement is between the sponsor and the promoter, not with her or her management. The promoter then contacted the management and so on. Both parties (the promoter and the management) should have been aware of controversy-provoking issues like this and hopefully are more careful in the future.

Apparently no one told the Muslim population who are doing time as guests of the state of California that their "peaceful" religion bans tobacco. I guess it's o.k. for the Imam to keaster stash it and bring it in to his disciples though. That must be the purification process.

It's quite hypocritical for this Islamic organization to ban Kelly Clarkson's concert. Cigarette companies sponsor nearly all music concerts in Indonesia, so it's foolish that they would only hold her up to that standard. (It is also foolish for them to ban smoking, which actually is NOT forbidden in the Islamic religion. There are few prohibitions in the Islamic religion, and these include pork, drugs/alcohol, running blood, or animals that are already dead when you encounter them.)

I am a Muslim who lives in Jakarta, doesn't smoke and plan to attend her concert. How on earth did she know that she's sponsored by a tobacco company? There was no consent about this whatsoever, and this is clearly the promoter's responsibility.
I have to also point out that smoking is NOT forbidden in Islamic rules, but it should be prevented, whatever the religion is, for it causes health problems later in life if not immediately.
And, tobacco companies are ones of the few that give the highest number of tax to the country, so while its existence is harmful and dangerous, we are still living in hypocrisy, I have to admit.
But nonetheless, it is certainly NOT Kelly Clarkson's fault and I believe those group of Muslims don't hold anything against Americans or American Idol in general, and please, do not tag all Muslims with anti-American label. As hard it is to believe, there are more Muslims who love peace that what appears to be.

You people that are attacking Islam because it seeks to ban cigarettes are ridiculous. When you attack muslims for a real fault like targetting civilians thats fine and understandable but when you attack muslims for something that health organizations seek to do as well thats just pure hate. that is why muslims are distrustful of us and are upset when their religion or prophet is mocked. you claim its not a real attack and its just satire and its just a cartoon, but they see it as a real attack and that is corroborated by the fact that you even attack it for something good. if you are not racist then you must recognize the good as well as point out the faults, but if you attack both the faults and the good then you are a racist. pure and simple fact.

why do some of you people have a problem with muslims banning smoking or being against smoking? thats a good thing. health agencies are allowed to do it but not religion? the ban doesnt stem from an idea that cigarettes are evil or anything. it is a logical ban based on health concerns and part of islam says that humans should take care of their body. you people are so caught up on hate of islam or religion in general that you don't recognize any good that comes out of it as good. kind of like fanatics closing their eyes to anything other than what they think. dont be hypocrites.

Some of the disrespect that's being directed toward Kelly in here is a bit shocking and uncalled for. In order to understand this situation, you need to better understand her career. None of these things are under her control – they're under the control of her record label, and in the case of touring, her management. Keep in mind that her management is actually run by Narvel Blackstrock, husband and manager of Reba McEntire. These people do not typically have to deal with managing worldwide tours, because their artists are country artists. In that case, it's no wonder that they'd make such a mistake.

Cut Kelly some slack. Also, anyone bashing her fans, please do your research. If you knew anything about her, you'd know she's really quite the anti-pop star, by modern definition. Truly a class act and a flawless voice.

YES, she signed a contract. And other contracts all budgeted with this and other sponsors. She could even be sued by the LA Lights company if she says negative things about them – her "lose/lose" comment could get her in trouble. You don't knock your sponsors. We have an outdoor concert hall in Dallas called the "Smirnoff Center" – I personally thought it was in poor taste, but Smirnoff updated the center and made it beautiful and a great place and it brings name artists to the area. It's business.

But – for Pete's sake, people, this is not about Muslim. Since you brought it up – are you aware there are more Muslims than any other single religion in the world? Dissecting or making fun of the word "fatwa"? I'm sure "being saved" puzzles them too.

It's a bit unfair for Kelly to be taking all of this heat, when it's really not something she deals with. Anyone that follows Kelly knows that she's not one to attract drama, and this is the last thing she wants.

Besides, why are we focusing on this, but no GaGa wearing a pair of glasses made out of lit cigarettes, or The Black Eyed Peas, whose world tour is sponsored by Bacardi? Talk about a double standard.

The link to this article on the main page read "Fatwa bans Kelly Clarkson concert".....I find this a little difficult to understand

This is a bit of an assumption on my part, but Just because there is a fatwa against her concert, that does not necessarily mean that it will have to be banned, at least not in Indonesia anyway. If it was Saudi Arabia it would be different because there sharia is the law of the land and fatwas are taken seriously by the government.
I have not been to Indonesia, but as far as I know, Indonesia isn't a secular state per se; the ideology it is founded on is Pancasila, part of which is religious in a general sort of sense, but in Indonesia grants religious freedom, although there are five religions that are considered "recognized".....Still there are some parts in Aceh province where Islamic Fundamentalist have gained power and opened Sharia courts, but that's a small province in Western Sumatra, and more than 60% of Indonesia's population lives on Java, where Jakarta is.

So is she being banned at all?? or is this just an edict given by a religious organization with no "real" power??

If she is really "banned" is it because of the Fatwa?....or the general concern that it will encourage children to smoke?

I bet no one would have even known who was sponsoring this concert, if this hadn't been brought up. She should just go ahead & play the concert & sing her heart out like she always does. I lived Jakarta for many years and am proud Indonesian. I'm pro for "no smoking for kid" and "no sponsorship from tobacco industry" but it's up to the fans. Muhammadiyah (or Indonesian goverment) should ban the tobacco industry not the concert, then there won't be any kind of sponsorship for any concert. Muhammadiyah (or Indonesian goverment) should ban the Muslim people to watch the concert, (again) not the concert itself. The concert is not desctructive but it's for musical appreciation. The concert area may be declared as non-smoking area for health & safety reason. Indonesia is the biggest Muslim population in the world, but there are other non-Muslim people who also don't smoke and want to see the concert. Live it up to the people to decide! I love Indonesian to grow up to decide what the best for them rather than to be banned from everything.

Cant we all just get along. Islam and Christianity call people towards good, yet some of their followers are born into these religions and may not be perfect followers, and when they do something wrong it is only fair to judge them as individuals and not generalize by taking some people's actions and judging entire religions.

Just like we don't judge all priests or lay the blame for their perversions on the religion of Christianity (Catholicism) which they claim to follow so too must we be just and fair in assessing the actions of Muslims and not cast aspersions on Islam.

    Hi Chris,

People of different faiths have used and still use religion as a cover to kill innocents whether children or adults. Hypocrisy is not confined to any religion. It would be wise to see past this and judge a religion on its own merits, not on the actions of someone who uses it for political cover.

The term you use "they" sounds like they all think the same and have the same motivations. Just like followers of other religions, muslims are different in their outlook depending where they originate. It is sad to see that many suffer from ignorance and choose to stereotype others because their education about islam and muslims comes from film and tv, hardly independent and truthful sources, more like propoganda machines.

There was a time when film and TV spewed propaganda about "Chinese", "blacks", "Red Indians" and now its the time for "them bad Muslims". Its unfortunate really that people eat up this rubbish, not realizing that they being misled.

To make it clear it is forbidden to hurt any innocent in name of god. By the way Allah means The one God and it is the name used in the arabic language for the One true god by muslims and christians.

    Interesting facts about Islam.

Muslims believe in: One God the creator of all the universe, life after death, angels, all the prophets from Adam to Muhammad (may gods peace be upon them all), the day of judgement, Jesus (May god's peace be upon him) is the Messiah, who will return before the Last Day and will destroy the Dajjal (Anti Christ).

An islamic tradition: The best believer is the one who is most helpful to mankind.

I'm waiting for the Fatwa that deals with people getting their heads lopped off in the name of the Almighty.

Certainly, the influence of the Muslim world is selectively brought to bear on items that present the least political challenge.

I respect all faiths, but not all religions. Religious organizations fall down miserably when they are afraid to enforce or scared that they might offend. It's a qualified disgrace and a pity. Perhaps the problems are too "complex." Right. Ahem........

Instead of playing a higher profile role in bringing the insanity of the rogue offshoots under control, they chose to go after smokers. A noble cause to be sure, but one that falls well short of the mark for where any responsible religious organization should be positioned in the world that, today, needs them so desperately.

Wow, look at all the self righteous people here telling Clarkson to drop the gig!

    1. This is her job. I don't know about you, but I don't work for free. I also don't pay to come to work, which is what she'd be doing if she paid for this concert.

    2. Rock stars don't make as much money as you think.

    3. Touring overseas is a tremendously expensive proposition. I doubt Clarkson could pay the expenses for this one gig comfortably.

    4. She has hundreds of people in her employ while on tour that depend on the concerts.

So, think before you type. Or practice what you preach, and go to work for free tomorrow and show your support for Kelly.

TimM, islam forbids intoxicants like drugs and alcohol, you're right that cigarrettes or tobacco wasn't around 1400 years ago, but the general principle of not poisoning oneself/killing oneself slowly still applies and was used to derive the prohibition of smoking. although many muslims are ignorant of that and/or addicted to the drug. I would imagine that most of the tobacco industry's revenues come from international sales, they wouldn't like this type of religious prohibition to gather any steam.

Islam reminds people to maintain their bodies in a pure state and respect it as a temple. Smoking, being unhealthy should be avoided. However in todays world many muslims do not follow perfectly the principles of Islam and have fallen prey to the harms of smoking, which was introduced into their societies from abroad, while those countries themselves are banning cigarette smoking in most public places. Hopefully it wont be long before the muslim countries follow with these type of bans.

Finally it must be noted that Islam is a way of life that models noble values and should not be faulted with the failings of many people who claim to follow Islam but who are followers in name only, while falling short in practice. As an example Islam teaches that its followers should value the virtues of kindness, generosity, tolerance, peacefullness, self sacrifice etc, and while many who call themselves Muslims strive to implement these values in their lives, some who call themselves Muslims, actually follow the path of materialism in their daily lives. It is the same with followers of other religions. Ultimately for the sake of being just and to maintain clarity it would be wise to distinguish between the true teachings of most religions and the failings of those who claim to be their adherents. For example Islam may dislike cigarette smoking, yet many muslims smoke and this would not be Islamic or Muslim culture, it is but the practice of some people.
We should not attribute a practice to any religion, unless it is specified in its belief system.

Whether, christian, jew or muslim the believer is only as good a believer as his actual practice which if imperfect is only a reflection on him and not on his religion.

Well, finally nice to see a newsworthy Fatwa by an Islamic organization that is positively motivated and actually trying to save lives (not only Muslim ones presumably).
Ordinarily when one sees "Fatwa" in a headline it is to condemn, outlaw, and often threaten the life of authors like Salman Rushdie, Danish cartoonists, or the creators of South Park, so this is refreshing.
The sooner organizations like these focus on life enhancing ideas and not mindless, divisive and belligerent rantings against the US, Israel and the West, the sooner peace can come to the world.

Muslims use tobacco though. Anyone who has been to an Islamic country knows that cigarettes and hookahs are popular in that culture.

Why don't they ban breathing to. I'm hoping for all religions to die, wether's it's Islam, Christianity or Judaism. They've got to go.

It all about the money for these artists. Kelly could probably care less about cigerettes, she just want to get paid. I guess this going to cost her big time in the pocket to have her concert cancelled.

Ok, is dropping the tour date REALLY her only option? Don't you think she has enough money on her own–and enough other potential sponsors–to stage the concert anyway, "for the fans," even if the profits aren't as great?

She needs to either drop the tobacco sponsorships or cancel the concert.

Maybe I am just cynical, but I would have had a lot more respect for her if she just said "I am OK with kids smoking" or even "I don't care" or even "I want the money" but come on she is doing it because of the "fans".
