Brad Pitt grounded by volcano's impact testing captions Add Brad Pitt to the list of celebrities grounded from appearances due to the volcano. The actor was scheduled to appear this evening in New York at a tribute dinner, sponsored by the government of Tanzania, in honor of his brother Doug Pitt's humanitarian work. But Brad Pitt was traveling from Europe - or trying to. His plane has been grounded, like thousands of others, thanks to the power of the volcano beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull glacier. Doug Pitt, a professional photojournalist, is a director of Africa 6000 International, which has been active in supplying fresh water to those in need, according to its Web site. Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete is scheduled to honor Doug Pitt.

ibelieve25: Thank you for clarifying what Doug Pitt actually does for a living. I was just curious being a fellow Missourian. As he is a business owner/humanitarian it makes this situation sound more real for those of us who live in the mainstream. I'm sure he is well-deserving of his award and I'm even more certain his brother, Brad Pitt would be proud to watch him receive it.

Is the US doing anything to bring our stranded travelers home? Boats for instance? No one seems to have a plan in mind. I assume they thought this would not last so long, but it has. Would be interested to know.

Doug owns his own Computer Company in Springfield, MO, that has been very successful. This is not the only charity he is involved in. He began Care to Share, a program that locally helps out students in schools who may not be fortunate to have the money for basic things like school supplies, shoes, or even toothbrushes. He also has helped with the something that hits even closer to home, having to do with his mother Jane Pitt. The Jane Pitt Cancer fund donated a large sum of money for child cancer patients. Doug is very active when it comes to giving back to his community. This is very well deserved for you Doug..congrats! Although I have not seen any of his photography, I am aware that he does so in his free time.

Gee last I heard Doug Pitt was a bank officer or financial/stockbroker something or another in Southern Mo. Where did the professional photojournalist come from? Has anyone seen his work nationally?
The only difference is that since Brad is stuck in Europe he can just camp out at one of his many homes he owns, unlike most of the other travelers.

Wow thats so cool! Brad has a brother and not only that he is following Angelins humanitarian efforts. I know I sound scarcastic but really I'm not. However I do think it is a shame we hear about A-B all the time but some one who is not in the lime light goes un-noticed untill famous brother gets stranded. Now thats scarcasem!
If he really wanted to be there, he of all people has the financial means to have made alternate travel arrangements. No matter where he is in the world, he could've gotten (without flying) to a country unaffected by volcanic ash, and flown to NY. I'm appalled to hear a whiny, pitiful story about how a rich celebrity is stranded in Europe, when I know damn well he's not stranded. Truth is he doesn't want to be in NY to support his brother. Because, if he wanted to, he would be.

Good God. This is news? What importance is this that he has been stranded? Do these bloggers have some king of unnatural fixation on actor types or something and live for every moment they can report some useless bit of info? There are millions of people that have been stranded. So, if PItt has been stranded, soooooo what?
We put up with this ash thing when Mt. St. Helen's exploded in May, then again in July of wheneveritwas.
Ash causes problems with cars, too.
Brad and Angelina, their 6 kids, and his Mom and Dad are in Venice Italy and have been for over a month. Angelina is making a film there. So what break are you talking about?

So when do the other countries start to kick in money to feed these poor people who have been standed in airports for days with no way home, and have run out of money (in an airport, oh how could this happen?). The USA has put out so much money to hurricane, typhoon, earth quake, flood and drought victims, when is it time for OUR stranded, amongst others to get some help? They are virtually helpless by an act of God (oops) and we always seem to come to the rescue of everyone, so I think it may be time for someone else to feed the weary and tired, not to mention, broke and HOMELESS!

Thats unfortunate. Tonnes of people are stranded and its no good. The volcano itself and the ash in the air is additionally important.
