Full statement: Ricky Martin confirms he is a 'homosexual man'

Ricky Martin has released the following statement on his website:

A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life. From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside. Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating.

For many years, there has been only one place where I am in touch with my emotions fearlessly and that's the stage. Being on stage fills my soul in many ways, almost completely. It's my vice. The music, the lights and the roar of the audience are elements that make me feel capable of anything. This rush of adrenaline is incredibly addictive. I don't ever want to stop feeling these emotions. But it is serenity that brings me to where I'm at right now. An amazing emotional place of comprehension, reflection and enlightenment. At this moment I'm feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share.

Many people told me: "Ricky it's not important", "it's not worth it", "all the years you've worked and everything you've built will collapse", "many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature". Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.

If someone asked me today, "Ricky, what are you afraid of?" I would answer "the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war...child slavery, terrorism...the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith." But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment.

These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed.

What will happen from now on? It doesn't matter. I can only focus on what's happening to me in this moment. The word "happiness" takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.

I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.

Hi just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren't loading correctly. I'm not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I've tried it in two different web browsers and both show the same results.

Ricky, I knew your real "self" the first time you really came into the musical scene. I, too, had to make a decision many years ago to free myself, stop sabotaging my life, and face the truth. It was not easy and there was much fall out; however, I have survived as you will. Ricky, you are a beautiful soul both physically and spiritually. Being "gay" is not the full essence our who we are; but just a part to the whole person. It is not the only gage that defines who we are. God Bless You and your family, Ricky. What a joy it would be to set down and talk; but, this is the only route to take at this time. Take care!

It is not surprising that he announces that he is gay. In Puerto Rico it was the worst guarded secret in the Island. Maybe some people was hoping that he wasn't and nobody made a fuzz about it because he is a very likable person. Anyway, it gives a whole new meaning to "Living La Vida Loca".

Many, many people may find this as a joke to say certain things like 'DUH' or 'So what else is new'. It's hard however for one individual to even notice the truth of who they truly are when they've been told one thing and can't live the way they came into this world. It may be funny on some levels which hopefully a man of his popularity and look pass what his fans and other people say of him and just focus on who is. It may be funny for some but to actually be in his shoes is such a difficult position. I applaud him for what he did. Congratulations.

Seriously? Wow! No clue. BTW: Pity when an artist of any form believes it's courageous to come out. Usually it's too late 'cause they're (unfortunately) terminally ill or it's waaaaaay past it takes courage. Ellen coming out (while also not a shock) was much more courageous 'cause back in her day she could've easily been shunned and ruined. Elton John coming out took some balls.

But for him to say like he did that he was told, "don't do it you'll ruin everything you've worked for," puh-leeeeeze! Dude, gay artists are not only accepted, it's almost a cliché. I'm with Diana on this one, great! Now that your career is pretty much dead and buried you want to come out.

Great call Ricky, I'm sure your courage will inspire scores of gay men and women who are closeted and surely suffering in silence for legitimate, albeit wrong, reasons.

maybe a new musical production is coming out soon and is a new behavior of the artists to splash a scandal before a release to get the attention of those that do not known them and increase the sales and fanatics...

remember Noelia and Elvis Crespo and their respective scandals??
many people that didn't knew them, get the attention and started to get interest to know more about them.....

incredible, what biz do for $$$...

...and there are few hundred thousand women now crying around the globe...But, better honest with yourself than living a lie.

Although this lie made him a superstar. Come to think of it, acting straight made a lot of certain people famous. Interesting...

Regarding all the "oh, we knew he was gay" comments: betcha didn't think that when he jumped on the scene, especially writhing around with the ladies in the videos he made.

oh who cares – what a bunch of psycho babble that didn't even make sense. you act like the first person that ever came out of the closet. we all knew it anyway – so even if you had come out when you were 'on top' you would have survived. now this just looks like a ploy to get your name out there – because as they say, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Sad that he felt this was such a burden...that he really thought it would matter...I noticed a lot of gay people don't know that we already suspected. We don't care...and for the trifling few that care...they probably already knew too and did not support you anyway so WHO CARES. This just makes me love you more...I have been a fan since I was a little kid and you were in Menudo.

Wow, I'd never have guessed. In other news, Sean Hayes (of Jack in "Will and Grace" fame) also came out last month. Wow! I'm shocked. But seriously, when will these celebrities realize that most of America doesn't care if you're gay or straight, and the ones that do probably weren't in your corner in the first place.

Now if only the two resident Queens of the GOP Senate would come flying out of their closet. Seriously, Lindsay Graham and Mitch McConnell, even Stevie Wonder can tell you're gay from outer space.

Sure, it's easy to come out when you're career is basically non-existent these days. If he had come out when he was at the top of his game, THEN I would have thought he was brave. Oh well, at least he finally did it. Now when are all the other closet cases in Hollywood going to come out?

It's about time, most people already assumed it anyway. Now it's time for Queen Latifah and Anderson Cooper to do the same. Just come out, no one really cares but do yourself a favor and get the monkey off your back and live life fully. People like that are only lying to themselves and causing inner hidden turmoil.
