    To k:

You must have either been drinking or under the influence of drugs when you watched both of these pictures (The Hurt Locker & Avatar), either that or you didn't watch either of them. The Hurt Locker had zero plot and what is worse is that its screenplay was simply horrible. Avatar is an OLD story, but presented in a different and unqiue way with an imagination that is far beyond what most could imagine. The film making was innovative & creative and yes even ground-breaking in some respects. For Hurt Locker, I really couldn't even tell where the beginning was and where the end was, just a bunch of soldiers blowing things up. No sorry, between the two of them Avatar was clearly the better movie and not because of its ticket sales or revenue, but because it told an old story in a unique and creative fashion and most of all because it entertained. This is why it should have won, because it is and was entertaining, not because it is the biggest money maker in cinema history, and that is what the motion picture industry is all about – entertainment.

Dear Rhye and all the poor people who think that Avatar is a good movie. It is a over glorified TV show with way too many special effects. James Cameron is a hack and a year from now the phenomanon you think of now will be perspective. Hurt Locker is art Avatar is rehashed story with amazing effects. It got all the awards it will ever deserve. Selling tickets doesn't mean best movie it just means an amazing number of stupid people with not taste or sense of what quality.

I'm very happy that UP won as well as Sandy as Best actress! All the winners are deserving except The Hurt Locker and Bigelow! I hate it! It should be Avatar and Cameron. Avatar is extraordinary and exceptional than the Hurt Locker.

Also, to everyone saying money should be considered when choosing the best picture, then Harry Potter, Ice Age, Transformers, 2012, and Twilight should have been nominated, too.

By that rationale, the Backstreet Boys should have won handfuls of Grammys, and so should have Britney Spears, because they've sold millions and millions of albums.

How can anyone claim Avatar is original? It's a story that's been told 100s of times! It's Fern Gully meets Dances with Wolves! And if pretty pictures and images make for the best movies, then Transformers should have been nominated. Did anyone notice there weren't any acting awards for Avatar? You know why? Because the acting was awful and laughable. The first hour was fun to look at it, but, Jesus, the story was horrible!

i think the next Oscars at-least 5 to 6 million viewers should boycott the show that will send the message home to the Oscars to stop favoring politics and concentrate on entertainment that's what they do not try to sell war for the politicians and men that sell arms. the real question is who got payed off at the Oscars to vote the war movie in as best picture and director.

It's amazing to me that someone saying "fat black slob" gets vilified in these posts as an evil racist. Sure, the comment may be insensitive and rude, but it doesn't make someone a racist. I can't watch cable TV without stumbling on a black comedian making jokes about "skinny white bitches" and "white people," which sends the black audience into roars of laughter. Yet I don't ever hear anyone, including white people, calling those comedians racists - or insensitive, for that matter.

Neither "Hurt Locker" nor "Avatar" have captured my heart, and it seems you guys should check with the you-tube community more, about what real good movies are about. "Avatar" is supposed to be groundbreaking or visualy renewing? I don't think so, as most computer games have better graphics & stories these days. Mostly a waste of money if you ask me, if you see what simple independent studios all over the world are doing. Is the win for "Hurt Locker" deserved? Well, it is atleast a controversial win, something the "Oscars" have become famous about. Prediction for next year's big winner: Tim Burton's Alice!

Why does it surprise anyone that the Academy showered its most precious (no pun intented) awards on movies like The Hurt Locker and Precious? Does anyone remember 1977 when the first Star Wars film was nominated for 10 awards, winning 7, but NOT Best Picture? Annie Hall took the award that year and although Annie Hall was a decent movie, it wasn't even close Star Wars as far as something that was ground-breaking, leading edge, would change the film business for years to come, innovative/creative and above all entertaining, wanting you to go back to the theatre again and again to see it. Avatar is this years equivalent to the 1977 Star Wars. Cameron already has his awards for Titanic, which, in my opinion wasn't that good either, not the likes of a Star Wars or an Avatar. The Academy doesn't award the best picture any more, they have completly lost touch, but this has been going on for years. For those who think Avatar got screwed, well your not in the club alone, it was not only the Best Picture of 2009, but probably the Best Pictur since Lord ot the Rings – Return of the King and remember Lord of The Rings (the last installment) actually broke the mold of Hollywood, before LOTR there hadn't been a Fantasy/Sci Fi picture ever to win Best Picture and it took the making of three of them in installments to do this. Hollywood is into Hollywood, they don't really care what is popular or not or what the biggest box office is, they simply can't bring themselves to award a picture that is in that genre (Fantasy/Sci Fi), no matter how creative or entertaining or money making it is. I was fortunate, I saw all 10 of the nominees this year in theatres, I saw two of these; UP and AVATAR more than once. The Hurt Locker was okay, but I would rate it as an average picture. I liked Blindside, UP and Avatar. I thought the rest were second tier pictures and still do. I'm glad Bridges and Bullock won and I'm happy a woman finally got Best Director, but to award Hurt Locker Best Picture was just sad. I will certainly continue to go to movies, but I will no longer watch or be interested in the Academy Awards because they are simply meaningless, they have just become an excuse for the Hollywood elite the dress up and party, thinking they have done something magical by awarding sub standard performances and pictures.

What a disgraceful Academy Awards that was!

The Academy (And it certainly wasn't Plato's!) really did play it safe this year in terms of how they nominated / voted.

The hosts and the jokes were completely sexist, racist, and homophobic to say nothing of completely mean-spirited and insensitive and I've never seen worse.

Sandra Bullock wins Best Actress over all of those other more talented actresses and nuanced performances?

You have got to be kidding me and it looked like even Sandra herself realized how rigged, ridiculous, and biased her win was given the talent and roles of her competition. It's not that she couldn't or shouldn't win for something but this just wasn't the one and was just another covertly racist movie about Noble White People saving Black People from themselves. It's like a time-warp back to Julia Roberts winning for playing Erin Brockovich.

Hollywood seems to have a love affair with sassy blond southern women fighting evil and winning without actually engaging in real feminism that shakes-up the status quo.

"The Hurt Locker" winning was a slight surprise and felt extremely calculated and political but I can live with it.

I still think Avatar should have one a bit more.

Avatar looks like it took 12 years to make. Hurt Locker looked like it was filmed in the desert someplace in two weeks. Probably wasn't even Iraq. A repetitive, dull movie about an adrenaline junkie beat the epitome of what you go to the movies for. Hollywood is always for the underdog, but this time, the champion deserved the title.

Haven't seen Crazy Heart, Jeff Bridges is a solid actor who pretty much always delivers.

Hurt Locker over Avatar for best picture is arogant and obnoxious and moronic on the part of academy voters. Why don't they like JC? Avatar has a world wide gross of $2,600,000,000 while Hurt Locker is $21,000,000. Avatar has grossed more than 100 times as much as Hurt Locker. Avatar has been in theaters for a little less than 3 months while Hurt Locker has been in the theaters for a little less than 9 months. So, let's see, Avatar has grossed 125 times as much in one third the time. Well, of course then, it shouldn't win best picture. If Best Picture does not coincide somewhat with what the people who pay for movies like then it makes no sense. I have a news flash for the academy volters: If we don't like the movie you don't get to make it. Maybe the public voting with its money should carry a little more weight in the Best Picture category.

weak choice on Hurt Locker for Best Pix. Up in the Air and Nine (which was totally robbed) were much better movies. Don't get me wrong, Hurt Locker was good – just not THAT good.

Best Actor to Jeff Bridges!!???!!!??? Very weak. George Clooney was at least better but would should have happened is Daniel Day Lewis get nominated and win for Nine.

Best Actress should have gone to Meryl or Helen – hands down. Sandra is very nice but doesn't stack up talent-wise.

The awards have become a joke. It really shouldn't have even been close. Avatar was ABSOLUTELY FREAKING AMAZING. Pretty good story line, very good acting and awesome effects.

The moment I got out of the theater, I wanted to go back in and see it again before it leaves the theaters.

While I didn't see the Hurt Locker in the theaters, there is NO WAY it would have compared... NONE. I fell asleep at home watching it. It was an okay movie, but nothing that said "must see" to me. And the military movies have been over-done the past decade or so anyway. Hurt Locker was a decent movie that had me feeling like I've already seen it before... similar to other military movies.

Then again, why should this be a surprise? It seems almost every year, the movie that is far and away the best movie... ends up 2nd. Perhaps it's all about the "surprise factor"??? That's gotta be it... because there really is no other explanation. 70 out of every 100 people would tell you Avatar is the picture of the year. So how is it that the minority ends up deciding it?

    Stupid.

The directing for The Hurt Locker was not overrated at all, maybe the movie was but it was the only real movie made this year. Congrats to Sandra Bullock, I'm looking forward to The Blind Side on dvd but the real Michael Oher looks mean and the guy in the movie looks like a big teddy bear so I decided to wait. The Razzies is such a joke, they stole publicity from Sandra Bullock, she shouldn't have honored that. I didn't see All About Steve but how much worse than all those types of movies could it be, really? The fact that Gamer didn't win every Razzie award shows what a gimmick it is.

    To Joe,

America is a big continent and the US is just another country. So first, please talk correctly. The fact that have been taken as the same during time doesnt mean its correct.

The US is not the world. We are all humans living on this planet with common and particular issues. Films are arts that can depict profound human conditions. As such, there is nothing wrong in having a recognition to the best foreign film by pairs in the film industry in the US, as it happens during the Oscar ceremony award. At least people in the film industry is not entirely closed up to things going on in the US. A good film is a good film as a good person is a good person, doesnt matter from where it comes or their appearance.

Well said Charmaine. This board is fairly appalling.

In the spirit of discussing racism, I will mention that anyone who voted for Obama JUST because he is black is a racist – choosing someone based solely on skin color is the very definition of racism. As so many have admitted to choosing him for the color of his skin vs. the promises made in his rhetoric, innovative ideas, leadership or any other much-needed qualities intrinsic to running the most complex country in the world, we would be perpetuating racism to choose Obama again or another black president JUST because he is black. Here's a novel idea: let's choose the most qualified person to run our country, regardless of race, gender or even sexual orientation. Perhaps some of our problems could be solved by someone with a brain and some common sense.

Lula or whatever your name is, your internet "shorthand" is ridiculous. I'm feeling doubtful about a BS in English Literature given that "ur sntncs" are very difficult to interpret with little logic in their shorthand, and you begin sentences with the word "But" (very bad grammar). Besides, educated adults write in an educated manner unless conversing with teenyboppers with little of subtance to say.

The Academy Awards needs to decide what it is - a critics choice award show or a show that showcases what was best about last year. I was very reluctant to see Avatar but did - what a surprise - I loved it. Surely one of the prerequisits for being a "best picture" is that it has had to been seen by a good lot of the "paying audience". The Hurt Locker was not - it stuck around for what a month at the most and disappeared. People went to see Avator not once, or twice but three or four times - that has to say something. If you are going to nominate 10 movies in order to pull in the public then please don't trick us into believing that perhaps the "politics" of the Academy Awards has changed. Today you proved it didn't. All those "big budget movies" that make the studios money to allow for those "smaller art films" still have a slim chance of winning.

no offense to hurt locker but - james cameron shoul have won best director and best movie. Obviously the peole who voted have NO IDEA what goes into making an epic movie like Avatar, and how could they? It had never been done before!. He basically re-invented cinema with it. Camreon's genius may be unacknowledged tonight – but history will tell the tale. In 20 years we will still be looking at Avatar going"ohh and ahhh" at it's seamlesness, it's perfection of craft and most importantly for it's relevant socio-environmental themes. ANd in 50 years, when the rest of the world catches up with James Cameron – it will by then be acknowledged for what it is – an American national treasure. EVeryone should see this movie. Forget the Oscars. God Bless James Cameron for making Avatar..

You must be kidding – Avatar was utterly amazing – and it's ridiculous that it didn't win. I'm sure Hurt Locker was a good movie, but I would think that the success of Avatar would or should have given the Academy a hint of the relative impact of the films. Oh well, guess relevance is not an issue to the Academy...

I think its a political correct award. So my impression is that best film goes to Avatar. I think Kathryn deserved this one as a director because the hurt locker constantly created psychological tension and you could almost feel like someone thats in the ground and all the confusion and terrible issues war brings for real. Times and moments and dialogues are well picked up in this film.

Now Avatar has something that no other picture had, message, potential for selling, very entertaining and new technology. I wouldnt be surprised as Avatar being picked as best picture because of that and being political correct

I agree with Glenn, Waltz was incredible, but there were at least one too many "Monseur Lapadite"s in the opening scene, it got tiresome, like get on with the killing, but the rest of the movie he was stellar. Quentin Tarantino had mixed results with his cast though, most of the foreign actors/actresses were phenomenal but Brad Pitt looked like a dork in there, some of the worst acting I have ever seen, it was as if Tarantino was just happy to have someone who could sell dvds. Brad Pitt is far past his prime, if he ever had one. And what was Mike Myers doing in there?

I absolutely agree with the decission about the foreign film award. The secret in her eyes its a great movie, an unusual combination of almost every genre type of film done in a natural way. The script its also a great adaptation and it has many many reflexive philosophical, poetical and humorous lines. Add to that unexpected and expected twists. Its a clear example that touching films can leave messages unintentionally, without the need to invest millions to suceed.

Thank you Obama, Oprah, Tyler, Samuel, Gabbie, Mo'Nique, Hattie, Jennifer and so many others for insighting such a racial riot on CNN's blogosphere. In 2010, we live in a huge wonderful country of hypocrites – proud to be American and proud to be racist. Until we become one nation, free to express our different cultures and be proud without degrading one another, we will never prosper. Our hatred will be our destruction. To disrespect another's success is only a snapshot into one's own selfishness and prejudice. The comments on this message board are rude, hateful and ignorant and a thorough highlight of the rude, hateful and ignorant authors. Congratulations to ALL of tonight's Oscar winners and God bless those who seek to separate and divide us even further in 2010! If nothing more comes of Obama's election, the world sees that racism is still very much alive and kicking which is all the morning reason to make sure Obama wins again in 2012!

Avatar is the Best Picture hands down, Hurt Locker was a good flick, but nothing like Avatar. I walked out of Avatar in a dream world and couldn't wait to see it again. The 1st movie in 15 yrs I've seen twice at the theater. Hurt Locker just doesn't have that effect.

One of the winners went on stage and said that she was glad that the Oscar was finally being awarded for merit of one's work instead of something political... That was actually very rude, insensitive, and giving herself WAY too much credits. I wonder why she never learned any manners or the values of being humble as a kid... I am not saying she did not deserve the award. I am just saying that her speech was just rude toward all the other excellent nominees!

Davit, the woman who came up to accept the award for Music by Prudence was one of the producers, in fact she was the person who came up with the idea and funded the film from the start. The man, Roger, also producer, impolitely hurried to the stage and tried to deny her her tribute to the real heroes of the story. Elinor Burkett has given a voice to the marginalized children of this down-trodden nation. Roger Williams only did it to make money. We applaud Eli for doing the right thing.

You hold your "First Amendment" right against the United States government, not against corporations. That is to say that other than time, place and manner restrictions, the United States government cannot interfere with the content or viewpoint of your speech. However, a corporation, on whose site you are posting comments, can regulate its own community as it damn well pleases.

I wonder who from this comment board has even seen Precious. It was a good film with solid acting. With two women who are black (as I am) and yes overweight, they were both confident and TALENTED enough to give outstanding performances, when they could have easily cowered from the challenge due to fears of what people (like those posting) might say. Kudos ladies. If an award is won (and one has been)....it was earned, but being nominated in itself is an awesome feat. As an aside, regardless of the work Mo'Nique has put out in the past (some trashy, yes)....it is THIS project she is being judged on, and she did a very good job.

Avatar, while gorgeous and an astounding technical achievement, is a theme park ride, not a best picture. I bet it will be nearly unwatchable on a small screen.

Hurt Locker, on the other hand, was incredibly well crafted and it skirted the fine line between scathing anti-war commentary and poignant homage (of the sacrifices our troops make for us) with finesse. I think it deserves the award. Plus it features mostly unknowns (vs. big hollywood money) and is still able to hold it's own on a budget. Have to respect that.

If not, Up in the Air should get it. Depressing as all hell, but well directed, well written and well acted.

    Up was HORRIBLE.

First off, it was a real snoozer. Secondly, I do not see why we needed to have a miscarriage and death of spouse in a cartoon. They could have left that part out.

Jana- I cannot BELIEVE you would say something so offensive: "black slob?" I would ASSUME from your remark that you are a size 0 and a completely clueless blonde. Just because someone is heavy does NOT mean that they are a slob- in many cases, such as my mother and I, precisely the opposite. Nor does being heavy as an actress make one less worthy of an award if one is a quality actor. Having never seen the film, I can't say whether she deserves the nomination- but obviously those in the business saw fit to nominate her, so there must be something praise worthy there, so stop denigrating someone for something that should have NO bearing on the awards process.

NONSENSE!!!!! The "Hurt Locker" wins best "original" screenplay. It was a good movie, don't get me wrong, but there can only ever be so much originality in the dialogue of a "straight up" military film. On the other hand, Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," although a semi-war film was the very definition of originality, to the extent of rewriting history. It was superior to The Hurt Locker in every conceivable way.............

That' 'black slob of an actress' is a thousand times more successful that you'll ever be. Jealous much?

I must agree with Uncle David. Inglourious Basterds is a garbage film. Tarantino's name alone wasn't enough to float this loser, so he had to recruit Brad Pitt. Even the spelling in the film's title is a cheap trick to garner the public's interest. The movie's essence is a few of shocking graphics (scalping, finger in bullet hole, etched swastika); then, a lame story was built around the graphics. Zero character development (hey, Tarantino, if you want to see how you could have done your film properly, watch _The Magnificent Seven_).

Anyone who thinks Quentin Tarantino makes quality films also must think G.W. Bush has an IQ greater than Einstein!

    Inglorious? More like GARBAGE!

It would be nice if the Oscars joined the modern age and allowed viewers to see this show live online. Seems archaic to me, to still just watch something solely on tv.

Might be one of the very worst movies I've seen since my first 'show' about 50years ago. It was 50 cents. I spent 9 bucks to nod off and spill popcorn through this one. How I stayed awake remains a mystery.
