Leno continues high ratings streak

The results have just come in from Nielsen Media Research's fast nationals (preliminary ratings), and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" is yet again No. 1 in its time slot.

Leno's total viewers were just slightly lower than the 5.8 million who watched Tuesday night; he had with 5.4 million viewers overall for Wednesday night's show. David Letterman's "Late Show" on CBS had 3.7 million and ABC's "Nightline" had a midweek slump with 3.4 million, down from the 4.1 million who watched on Monday.

Jimmy Fallon isn't doing bad either. He's holding his own as No. 1 in his time slot at 12:35 a.m, and had 2 million viewers in comparison to the 1.7 million who watched Craig Ferguson on "The Late, Late Show."

I'm not surprised that Leno is enjoying success during his first week back, but It won't last. Look at Conan--he had super high ratings in his last week as Tonight Show host. Soon enough the gawkers will dissipate and go back to Letterman or Kimmel and Leno's ratings will be in the basement where he rightfully belongs.

Conan was hilarious. Leno was too...but come on! He obviously failed at the other time slot. Freakin' bad move, idiot! Its too bad that the network pulled him back in...should of left his butt.

Good job, Conan. You made out like a bandit with that payout!

No need to bash Leno, Conan or Letterman. Watch the one that appeals to you. Personally, I am glad to see Leno back. Letterman has some interesting interviews with certain guests, but Leno's monologe is funnier. I wonder what Letterman thought of Jay having Alaska's Wonder Woman on his show? I turned the channel once she pranced through the door.

The only reason his ratings are so high is because everyone is curious about what he was going to do or say in his first week back; he still is lame. I refuse to watch anything on NBC or even pass the channel to give them any sort of ratings, they do not deserve it.

Conando will always and is always the best late night host there is. Love you Coco!

The guy reminds me of the kid in school that would narc on you, stab you in the back, lie, and act like they didn't know what they did wrong. And to top it off, whines " I don't know why people pick on me" Yuck, the guy is creepy......get rid of him.

If Craig Ferguson had the chance to host the Tonight Show for just one week he would be revealed as the TRUE heir apparant to the Carson seat. Ferguson is funnier than Dave and Jay combined....he just needs to be seen EARLIER.

Letterman used to be funny, but now he's a bitter old man who can't do anything but insert politics into every show. I don't watch late night to hear his political views.

I loved him back in the 90s when he would go into restaurants and do skits etc. None of that stuff is really done anymore, and Stupid Pet Tricks is a very rare event.

Since nbc screwed the pooch and replaced Leno with Conan. And made the mess it created, finally put Leno back where he belongs through controversry of it being Leno's fault, I think they need to get rid of Jeff Zucker. He really did a lousy job at his job. Tell him to quit thinking. Leave Leno where he is.

I don't get it, Leno just isn't funny. Everything he does is stale and predictable; you can fill in the punch line before he does. He and Carlos Mencia must be channeling each other. How they both came to be known as comedians is beyond me.

I wish everyone would stop blaming Leno, or Conan for that matter. The whole debacle was COMPLETELY the fault of NBC. They made promises to Conan that they didn't want to keep, tried something insane to make it work (and save money) and then pulled the rug out from everyone when it all came crashing down.

Leno will fall into his old routine and America will eat it up. He's so middle of the road. He's comfortable. He'll rule once again when everyone wants to mellow out with their old pal.

Conan is a funny and talented guy who got shafted. He handled it with class by stepping down but still securing extra money for his staff (and gave up some of his own settlement for them too, I heard). I hope he does move to fox at 10:30 or 11 pm. I don't care for any of these shows enough to stay up to or past midnight.

I wish one of the guests would put Jay in his place and make people see the chin for what he really is: A conniving little monkey who should have been off the air years ago. Why do people still think the man is funny?

And let's not forget, all these numbers are speculated upon by the 25,000 ratings boxes out in the world. I suspect that Leno gets far fewer viewers than reported, but maybe I have a higher estimation of IQ levels in the US than they deserve.

There’s a lot of debate here about who’s funnier, Jay or David.
For a real laugh, why not count (it might take a while!) the absolutely huge number of comments generated by this bit of showbiz trivia, and then have a look at some of today’s other articles – possibly starting with ‘Americans cooling on climate change, survey says’ – to compare the relatively paltry number of blogs generated by those stories.
Funny, isn't it, the things people seem to care most about?

For those Conan fans, you must remember he is solely responsible for his own demise. He attempted a coup against Leno 5 years ago by threatening to leave if he was not annointed Tonight Show Czar. It is his bed now he can sleep in it. He should have done the right thing 5 years ago and just left if he did not think the time table for his ascension was fast enough. But I suspect he knew he could never beat out Leno in the ratings so he took the coward's approach.

Leno is aweful. Not funny at all. Letterman has been the only true late-night comedian in the 11:35 time slot. He has a way of humorously discussing current issues, including headlines concerning his personal life. So who will retire first, Leno or Letterman? Where will Conan pop up? Fox? This will be fun to watch unfold.

"It bothers me when people conflate "better" and "more popular". Clearly Leno has proven to be more popular than both Conan and Dave, but that doesn't mean he's better. That's like saying a Chevy is better than a Ford because GM sold more cars last year."

This comment by another poster is the most intelligent comment I have read to date on the subject. I tuned in to watch Jay the last few nights out of curiosity. What did I see? The same tired old routines like "headlines" and "Battle of Celebrity Jaywalkers (Jersey Shores Version)". Jay is popular because he is "vanilla" and predictable, not because he is original or "better" than Conan. Conan's originality, creativity, spontanity, and humor far exceed Leno IMO. I'm afraid these same attributes were too much for older audiences who prefer the bland humor of Leno.

As for the ratings, the jury is still out. My thought is that Leno is a survivor and his ratings will stabilize. He was hurt, but people will get over this and watch him again because they watched him before.

Old people do watch Leno and he is OK with that. His humor caters to the 55+ crowd without offending other demographics (except the coco crowd)
One problem I have with watching Dave is how much he has moved his show to cater to the AirAmerica demographics. His only political jokes are decidedly partisan, Like he views his show as a bully pulpit for the Dems, always bashing any conservative. I think most of us want our commedians to be funny, but when they show an overt agenda, it just isn't funny anymore.
Now that the liberals have all branches of government, he has no material, he is literally using two to ten year old material bashing Bush because he is stil having his Obama orgasm from 2008. His AirAmerica group is shrinkin, they were a younger domographicd, and Dave is a 60+ ogre. The Dems even closed down airAmerica from lack of interest. If / When Coco returns, he will take more of dave's virwers then Leno anyway.
Dave was the funniest in my mind until a couple years ago, But to get his numbers back, he is going to have to make his show less politially slanted. I don't know if he is willing to give up his bully pulpit to make that happen. In the meantime, Leno will dominate the slot

While I might agree some that Conan wasn't funny, and his schtick was old-farty, Leno's impersonal stage and stale gags are not cutting it for the much-vaunted Tonight Show. Dave should have that one, and see it out with grace over the next five years or so.

I tried watching Jay for three nights this week, and had to turn off during the monologues. I came back for the guests, but he was still plodding-it's not just his writers who are tired, it's the whole set-up. I didn't expect a totally new Tonight concept, but did expect both energy and humor. Dave is such a better interviewer, isn't afraid to take chances, and is much easier to watch-he's terrific.

Jay does have high first week back ratings but they are no where near what Conan did in his first week on the Tonight Show. When you consider that and the fact that Jay does not have to follow a primetime show by a has-been TV personality (being Jay Leno) with ratings that are pitiful it is no surprise he is doing well (there is nothing driving viewers away from there TVs). Now i am no fan of Jay (he is a little to arrogant and smug and to me it looks like he has stopped caring about the show a long time ago) and i will admit i do like Conan (hopefully he doesn't end up being on fox somehow i think that would taint him) but really The Tonight Show has been dead for a very long time and NBC should let it die already. I'm sorry fellas but Jay needs a personality transplant before I'll ever watch his show. I don't like watching him at all compared to Conan O'Brien who in my opinion is much more fun and entertaining to watch. Older people who have watched Jay for years will continue watching because they don't adapt to change and get used to doing things without thinking it through.

He just had Sarah Palin on his show... WTF ppl?!? This woman is so retarded why does anyone even watch her? It scares me to think people are interested in watching retarded politicians so much I'm building a rocket ship so I can fly to another planet....

Having been a pretty devout Olympics watcher and a big fan of NBC over the years, I was *half* tempted to watch Leno the first week back. And then I remembered how unfunny he is, and how upset I am still about what NBC did to Conan, and I said to myself: "Self, you're better than that. Don't fall into the trap. I know you're proud of our U.S. athletes and you'd like to see their interviews, but then you'd be watching LENO...and that's not allowed."

Speaking of Olympics, my podium looks like this:

    Gold – Craig Ferguson
    Silver – Jimmy Fallon
    Bronze – Jimmy Kimmel
    Copper – David Letterman

    ...and... (wait for it) ...

    Aluminum – Jay Leno

I like it that Jay Leno is back at the Tonight Show. Jay should never have been forced out in the first place. His ratings were high. I think right now the best late night talk show host is Craig Ferguson. If he were to compete with Leno it would be close. I also like to watch Jimmy Fallon as well. He is a nice guy and a funny guy.

Leno's #1 in the ratings? Who cares. The general public has never been an arbiter of good taste. If they were, Michael Bolton and Celine Dion would have never sold any CD's. Letterman dwarfs Leno in humor, wit, and off-the-cuff, razor-sharp irreverant banter.

Leno is vaniila and painfully boring. He's a puppet in a suit that sniffs Hollywood movie stars jocks....thats his ammo. All the stars come on his show cause they know he'll pander to them. With Letterman, you're gonna get challenged. He's edgier and he thinks outside the box.

Jay Leno is a class act. Letterman reminds me of a high school jerk.and is mean spirited. Leno was asked to go to a new spot where NBC could give Conan his old slot. Conan was going to take his ball and go home because he did not get to play in the time slot he wanted. Leno got the shaft, Conan got the slot. ONLY...Conan could not carry the show.....He was not Leno.....and when the chips were down, he was not a class act either. BOO HOO Feel sorry for me. I do not think so.....CONAN....Jay gracefully stepped aside. His feelings were hurt to be cast aside.....No one has thought of that.....Pull your britches up in that weird way you have Conan and go along your merry way.....You got 35 mil to leave and can get a new show soon. NBC exec who came up with the idea to replace Jay Leno with Conan O'Brien should get paid to find another job outside television. Who in their right mind really thought Conan could fill Jay Leno shoes. Even with his own show he rarely won his time slot. To be quite honest he really wasn't that funny at all. In fact Sarah Palin was lot more funnier than he was. Thank god I lived long enough to see a black president, the Saints win the Super Bowl and Jay Leno back on the Tonight Show. Life is good.

I wasn't a fan of how NBC handled the Conan vs. Leno affair, but will watch Leno over Letterman. I think Letterman can be funnier, but his comedy has become mean spirited...there's enough negativity out there without comedians joining in. His jokes, like those about Palin, are personal and subsequently come up a bit short of being, at least to me, funny. I'll take Jay's pot-shots/jokes and think they're funnier simply because they don't seem to be coming from as dark a place. Dave's starting to come across as a grouchy old man. Fallon's numbers are good, we believe is because of his nicely promoted, "anniversary week"...
Craig Ferguson...in our opinion the best of them all...will be a fantastic replacement for Letterman...
The fact that he's Scotish (US citizen now) might cause problems for some blogs...(because of accent and sense of humor)...not for us...

Ferguson is far and away the funniest guy in late night. Jon Stewart is also a comic genius but his is a different kind of show. Haven't decided about Fallon yet. I think he just need a little seasoning and he'll be very good.
Carson understood one thing neither Leno nor Letterman will ever get...how to really showdase their guests. Johnny never talked over his guests and never tried to be funier than they were...he showed nothing but respect for them. Oh Johnny, how we do miss you.

Leno is a hack! He stole that show back because he couldn't get the ratings competing in primetime with real programming. I disliked Dave Letterman and always watched Leno, not because he was specifically funny, but because he was the only alternative to Letterman. Now I'll only watch Letterman. And, btw, Craig Ferguson is funnier than all of them put together.

Basically, Dave Letterman caved in this week. Dave knew that Leno would be a hard-charger out of the chute.....so he really didn't book much against Jay.
Jay will whip Dave's butt this week but gradually tail down to only being marginally better than Dave.
Thats where Dave likes it. Cuz Dave's audience is more sophisticated and up-tempo where Jay's is less IQ and such.
    The no-minds love Leno.
The upper crusts and sophisticates (of which there are a limited supply) love Letterman.

Leno is very formulaic. Dave is too, but slightly less so.

Leno stopped being funny ever since he took over the Tonight Show. He gives a terrible interview and appears quite awkward at times with his guests. A majority of his skits and material are ideas he's taken from others and he's shown no class in his stand with NBC. A real man with some class would've left to find another job given the prior agreements he made with NBC execs. Of course when you're not funny, not original and can't relate you stick around to what you know.

I guess I do not understand the anger against Jay. He was forced off by NBC and Conan. Conan came in and took over the leading late night talk show and ran it into the ground. The reason NBC brought Jay back was not that he demanded it but the Conan tanked. Based on the dismal ratings NBC had no choice but to bring Jay back in hopes of recovering.

Geeeeezzz!!!! So tired of everyone blaming and hating on Jay Leno. Get over it already. If sooo many people loved Conan so much then why weren't you watching him giving him the support he needed then. Jay got screwed over first. If you were doing something you loved so much and one day someone tells you it's over and then you get the chance to do it again...wouldn't you. If Jay didn't take the job back it would have went to someone else and I for one am glad to see him back where he belongs. He was number one until the day he left and Conan could not produce those numbers. If he had the ratings it wouldn't have been an issue. So if you were one of the ones not watching Conan...blame yourself.

To say Leno isn't funny kind of sounds stupid when you look at the plain facts that he led the ratings for 17 years and is doing it again! Are you serious? Jay Leno is horrible. Anybody who knows the art of comedy knows that Leno is a hack. His jokes are lame and only appeal to those who can't understand the complexity of Dave or Coco's jokes. Conan has won Emmys for his writing on SNL, the Simpsons, and Late Night. He actually has credibility. Leno, on the other hand, reads off a prompter and is essentially a lackey for NBC big wigs. Conan an is in the same air as Stewart and Colbert. The people who enjoy Leno are the same a** clowns who probably feel that Larry the Cable Guy is funny. Jay's monologues are painful to watch. His jokes are just plain "simple" and rather insulting to viewers who actually understand comedy art. The reason old people like Leno is because they can say "Oh wow, he referenced something I actually understand!" Pathetic. Get that crap out of here.

Who cares if Leno had anything to do with the NBC fiesco. The bigger point is that watching him is about as fun as shoveling kitty litter. Yes, Leno has the best ratings–blah blah blah. If you want to use the argument that this means he is the most talented, worthwhile, or whatever–then I suppose you would also argue that Britney Spears is a musician of superior talent, McDonalds produces the highest quality food, and cookie-cutter suburban homes are architectural masterpieces. C'mon folks–quality is somehow always less popular. Besides, could Leno ever have outpunked Joaquin Phoenix the way Dave did?

So, I haven't watched any late night tv on a consistant basis in years. When I did watch back in the day I was a Carson and Letterman fan. Then round one of the late night wars began and Letterman moved to CBS and Leno got the NBC job....I moved with Letterman. I never found Leno to be funny in the slightest. I did however find Conan to be a breath of fresh air when he joined the scene and made an effort to watch him. I think he is naturally gifted and funny as all get out. Fast forward 17 years and the late night wars the sequel occurs. I haddn't watched any late night in many years and my curiosity got the better of me so I DVR'd both Leno and Letterman for the first three days of the week. I would watch one and then the other to compare. After 17 years I STILL don't get why people like Leno. His jokes are lame, his delivery is awful, his interviews are horrid. Whereas Letterman, to me, is far more entertaining all around. Regardless, I do believe that when Conan comes back, in whatever he does, he is going to rule. This is quite funny. If people actually knew the history of Jay and how underhanded and dishonest he is, I can't see them watching. "The Late Shift" is fun to watch. Jay is just so talentless it's amazing. He's a joke-reader, not a comic...no comedic timing or original ideas at all. He bulldozes through questions when "interviewing". He screwed Johnny, he screwed Dave and he ROYALLY screwed Conan...it's par for the course with him. He was given multiple options, not just the 10pm show and he turned them down. There is a erason NBC are preventing Conan from taking another show until September; they know that head-to-head he will blow Jay away and they need time to prop up Jay's ratings. If you are looking for "junk food" TV for the simple-minded, watch Jay...that's who his show is written for. That's not just a snide comment; his writers are told to pander to that group. Anyway....watch if you want to, it's quite telling. Jay is getting the same ratings he had before and at 10pm. The problem for NBC comes down to the demographics of his audience. Conan's demographics were better suited for advertisers. Jay's are not. That was the whole reason NBC made the decision to move Conan in his spot in the first place.

When Conan goes to FOX, he probably won't beat Jay in head to head ratings but he will crush him in advertising demographics and will make the company he works for the most money. That is the business end of things.

As far as who is funnier, I personally love Conan more. I think he is more relavent and the future of late night. I used to love Jay earlier in his career but he has just become more stale and just not funny. His skits are just plain excrutiating to watch. The funniest thing he has done in a long while was the "Dave Letterman" promo during the Super Bowl. That was awesome.

He appeals to an older crowd, which I belong to. A lot of his followers are retired and are going to give him consistent ratings.
Dave is an immature egotistical fellow that is very political, mean spirited and takes advantage of his female staff, not a very nice person. If your primary perspective is politics and you are very liberal and you think women are only good for sexual pleasure, then you will like Dave.
Conan is a young fellow that appeals to a young crowd. If he gets a slot on another network I think he will bite more into Dave's crowd, which again will be younger and more liberal.

I just don't get Leno's attraction. He's so Hollywood, so Vegas, such a cheeseball. I prefer the laid-back humor of Carson and Letterman. Although Ferguson's show is the funniest these days. No band, no sidekicks, no big stars, just off the cuff humor

I agree with the previous commentor...love Craig Ferguson, he's the funniest guy, I record him every night and watch him first thing in the morning – he makes my day.
Jay, Dave & Conan all are talented and have their individual style, Jay is middle of the road (like most of us), Dave more sarcastic, and Conan irreverent, and that's how their ratings play out.

Why do people say Leno "retired" or "stepped down"? He was dismissed from the Tonight Show with 5-year notice when he was still #1 in the ratings because NBC thought he wouldn't keep it up for five more years. But he did. There's no accounting for taste, but he is more popular across a wider section of America and will therefore probably still come out on top again.

Sadly, this has become a political issue. Conservatives hate Dave because he's a liberal who took aim at Sarah Palin. However, at the end of the day, Dave (and Conan) are far more intelligent, smart and quick witted than Leno could ever be. Leno's just afraid to take chances or push any buttons so he plays it safe so everyone will like him. It makes him look like a dull baby.
And just so all you Leno lovers know, JAY'S A LIBERAL who HATES YOU GUYS AND EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR. It's just sad that some people aren't intelligent to pick up on that.

Leno's ratings are nearly twice Letterman's, so they won't fall far enough to put Dave on top anytime soon. Conan is now best known for sinking two shows at NBC..LN, and TTS. Is Fox ,ABC, or anyone else, really going to give Coco the chance to sink their top shows? I doubt it. Conan's LN fans failing to tune in to his TTS broadcasts are what sunk him....that, and the fact that he lacked the talent to win new fans.

Leno fans put their viewing, and spending, where their mouths are. Conan fans did not. Conan fans blog endlessly on FB, Twitter, etc, about how they love him...but they won't bother to change time slots to see him. When Conan left LN, to take TTS, his LN fans started watching Colbert. As such, Conan: lost his LN fans to Colbert, lost the Leno fans to whatever they watched after The Jay Leno Show, and failed to win new fans from among other people. Conan just wasn't as popular as he had thought he was. Now Fox/etc are less fond of him, too.

Conan's ego caused him to ruin the LN success he had, by urging him to grab for the brass ring of TTS; which he wasn't yet qualified to hold. His fans did not support him, Leno's fans did not support him, and no one else supported him...so Conan ruined TTS, too. It takes a special kind of non-talent to ruin two good shows in just 7 months. David Caruso quit NYPD Blue-without ruining it, or any other shows-and he was blackballed for 8 years afterwards before being given another chance with CSI Miami. Conan ruined two shows in his departure, so he will most likely be blackballed for a lot longer than Caruso was. I think we have seen the last of Conan O'Brien...for the rest of this decade, at least....unless he pays somewone to take him on.

Jay Leno is always trying to get the laughs even if he means he has to overshadows his guests. Even when he has animals on the show he is constantly trying to ruff the fur a little too hard on the lion cub so he can get the big laughs. I think he needs to focus on his guests a little bit more & not be such a show-off. He is a jackass.

The thing is people move forward, and that was the plan until Jay (and NBC) screwed it up. Our comedy tastes grow and develop and Conan was ushering in the new era. Jay will probably continue to rule late night for awhile, but soon Late night will disappear as my generation and the ones that follow won't and to a certain extent already don't watch television. Other internet and multimedia mediums will take control.

I completely agree w/ EJ. Leno was great as "The Tonight Show" host. I knew when the announcement was made that Conan would not survive with the audience that normally watches. He's just not cut out for the mid-stream, middle-age audience. He appeals to a much younger crowd who thinks for whatever reason a puppet throwing up is somehow funny over, and over, and over......
Jay is back where he belongs. And for those of you who continue to blame Jay for what has occurred....he doesn't OWN the show or the network. Seriously, get your heads out of your a**es and use your brain. It's not that difficult to figure out. It comes down to $$ people.

Remember that audience size doesn't mean quality. Brittany probably sold more records in the last decade than anyone else, but I doubt anyone would refer to her as a talented musician or singer (talented "performer" or "celebrity" – sure). Brittany's fans will always buy her latest album and listen to her recycled pablum. Jay's audience will tune in to his "aww shucks, isn't he cute" schtick. I'll take Dave any day.

Here's a fun fact. If you of course, like Jay Leno (which I have no problem with!). Harvey Korman of the Carol Burnett Show Fame is credited for discovering Jay Leno. Harvey used to live next door back in the late 70's to Johnny Carson. He took Johnny to see Andy Kaufman at an LA comedy club. Johnny didn't like Kaufman, but Harvey said stay, I want you to see and meet Jay Leno. So, Harvey is credited for discovering Leno and introducing him to Johnny which led to the hosting and re-hosting (pre-owned hosting) of the Tonight Show. Rest is peace, Harvey. You're always missed. FYI: as Harvey's cousin I know this story to be true first hand from Harvey.

He STAYS with NBC because he claims he still had 7 months left on his contract and couldn't go anywhere to do another show. NBC offers him a show at 10pm because THEY know he will go elsewhere and do well. Leno takes the show becasue he's NBC's dog. Get's FIRED AGAIN by NBC then takes ANOTHER job with NBC. Question: if you've been fired or pushed out by a company, wouldn't you move on to another job? Leno really is a no talent talk show host. Nothing makes me want to watch him. Many people who watch Leno are used to the "Tonight Show" brand and in case many of you forgot, when Leno took over for Carson, Leno's ratings were dismal.

i've always liked Leno. that said, i've grown tired of him as most people have; while Letterman and O'Brien have ventured into new territories with their shows, Leno continues to do the same old tired bits simply because they've worked in the past. this is why his 10:00pm show was doing so poorly in the ratings. television is one of the few places where the term "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" does not apply. Leno offers nothing new, and his ratings are good now only becasue he's regained his old time slot. he hasn't been nearly as funny as he was in his prime for several years now, and the ratings spike will be short lived. Jay needs to grow a pair and bring something new to the table, especially since he's received flak for the whole situation with NBC pushing O'Brien out to put Leno back in.

I have no doubt that Jay and Conan respect and admire each other; they're both great comedians and late night hosts, but you can only captivate the same crowd with the same old material for so long...

The amount of animosity toward Leno on here is kind of scary. Are that few of you actually well-adjusted or do you just have no business sense? Leno at 11:30 provided strong ratings, constantly beating Letterman. Conan's ratings at 11:30 were awful, Leno's at 10pm were awful as well. So, here's NBC's options...ditch Leno, and let Conan continue to bomb at 11:30 while Leno likely went to another network and likely beat both Conan and Dave. Or, ditch Conan and let Leno go back to the spot where he got them the best ratings, which is 11:30. I don't believe Leno demanded 11:30 back, and even if he did, he wouldn't have gotten it if NBC hadn't known he could get them better ratings than Conan, and so far he has proven them right. I doubt that will change once Conan's mediocre comedy comes back in September with another network. Leno will still be # 1, Letterman will be # 2, and Conan will be be # 3.

I think they're both good, Leno just happens to appeal a bit more to mainstream US, and Letterman is a bit edgier.People seem to act like one or the other should win some type of war, but lots of people watch both. There is room for both shows–depends on the mood you're in.

First, no one on this board knows Leno or Letterman personally, so takl about nice guy this, jerk that, no one really knows. As for the ratings, Leno has his following, granted, that following is getting older and older and older, but he'll likely hang on for a few more years, then he'll be gone along with his elderly audience.

I think people have finally come to see that Jay Leno really isn't funny and made millions from a show built by Johnny Carson.

Well I've never really liked Leno. Sure he was funny a long time ago but now he just seems humorless to me, like he gave up being a comedian. In any case, Conan's fan base is younger people and those same younger people would continue to watch as they're the new generation. The older folks...well they'll eventually pass and it's today's younger generation that should be the focus. Besides, the rating system is a bit skewed anyway. Everything's done online and I've watched Conan's shows and skits countless times over the years. I bet online viewing wasn't really counted in the ratings calculation.

quoting Junaid "no surprise because he is actually talented .. unlike conan who rightfully got booted out but had the nerve to actually complain while still making millions".

I disagree. Sure Jay is talented, but what do you consider more of a talent. To be able to follow a structure script and make moderately funny jokes? or to be able to be spontaneously funny, and create smart and witty comedy? I'll chose the latter. Jay beat Conan on ratings mostly because of the population he attracts. Middle aged to older people who 1) find his type of comedy more appealing and 2) are more likely to diligently watch a show on a nightly basis. Conan's population tends to be much younger and, at least now, are less consistent about tuning in. In due time I think Conan will come on top. But for now, hope Jay continues doing good.

Jay won't be able to keep up the pace of the big "get" guests he's been getting. The olympic push will ebb. NBC spent big time ensuring he would restart with a splash. NBC spent big time to make Conan move on. My guess is that in a year's time, NBC will still be in the hole economically on all this...but if Jay stays and does his middlin' thing for enough years they will do alright, financially. The late night audience is not very demanding...y'know?

I think we all forget, that Jay was asked by NBC to go to the 10:00 p.m. slot, because they, in their wisdom, wanted to keep Conan around. Jay went to 10:00 p.m. but would have preferred to stay at 11:35 p.m. Then when Conan didn't get the viewers, they asked Jay back. So none of this was Jay's fault, it was NBC's. I love Jay and I also love Dave, so I go back and forth between commercials. I think Conan is too silly sometimes. I love Jay's little skits when he goes to people's homes and they do some great "musical" or something else. Keep going Jay......and Dave.

now that they've been proven wrong, it's a whole new song and dance "oh wait 'till the newness blah blah blah"

Leno is a much better late night host than either Letterman or O'Brien and the ratings are proving that. The latter are mean-spirited men at heart. Leno appeals to the masses. O'Brien is a whiney baby and Letterman is a pompous ass. Leno America's guy right after Johnny, of course.

Leno never was any good...he was just well-marketed. He's shown the world what he really is...a back-stabbing, lantern-jawed egotist, who never was really very funny to begin with. He steals his ideas from others, but with the Peacock behind him, he gets away with it. Screw regular TV...give me Dave Attell on cable anyday!

No.........."The "newness" of Leno" will NOT wear off. Leno happens to be at his best in that time slot, and for me it was a comfortable feeling being able to tune in to the Tonight Show after the news, and this is the way it is for many, many viewers, which will once again put Leno at the #1 spot in late night viewing.

Jay will continue to improve as the premier late night host. Conan should have taken the deal, letting his ego put all of those people out of work then blaming Leno is weak. Letterman has a good number 2 spot. They are all wealthy men so we can all stop snickering and let them do what they do. "Make us laugh"

I predict Leno's ratings will stabilize at where he left off last year, right around 5.3-5.4. If Conan starts a new show in the Fall we will then see how it goes for Leno, but for now Leno will continue to beat Lettermen in the ratings race like he did for 17 years previous to the last 10 months which we can blame on Conan.

I disagree. Leno owned Letterman for years in the ratings until he walked away and let Conan take over. That isn't going to change even with all the flak he got regarding Conan. People still love Jay and most are blaming the execs for the Conan stuff anyway. I am not sure who came up with 10 oclock show ideas but he is already 10 times better back at 11:30. The show just flows better and is much funnier. I think his ratings may level off from the first night but not drastically so he will be fine.

    Go Jay!

Leno's rating caontinue to fall (albeit slowly) but Dave's ratings are stable. Leno and Conan both started this way and they will be end below Dave. The "newness" of Leno is already starting to wear off.
