The results have just come in from Nielsen Media Research's fast nationals (preliminary ratings), and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" is yet again No. 1 in its time slot.
Leno's total viewers were just slightly lower than the 5.8 million who watched Tuesday night; he had with 5.4 million viewers overall for Wednesday night's show. David Letterman's "Late Show" on CBS had 3.7 million and ABC's "Nightline" had a midweek slump with 3.4 million, down from the 4.1 million who watched on Monday.
Jimmy Fallon isn't doing bad either. He's holding his own as No. 1 in his time slot at 12:35 a.m, and had 2 million viewers in comparison to the 1.7 million who watched Craig Ferguson on "The Late, Late Show."
I really liked the article, and the very cool blog
Huh? What? You mean someone's trying to claim Johnny Carson's spot? Who? When?
I'm not surprised that Leno is enjoying success during his first week back, but It won't last. Look at Conan--he had super high ratings in his last week as Tonight Show host. Soon enough the gawkers will dissipate and go back to Letterman or Kimmel and Leno's ratings will be in the basement where he rightfully belongs.
Conan was hilarious. Leno was too...but come on! He obviously failed at the other time slot. Freakin' bad move, idiot! Its too bad that the network pulled him back in...should of left his butt.
Good job, Conan. You made out like a bandit with that payout!
No need to bash Leno, Conan or Letterman. Watch the one that appeals to you. Personally, I am glad to see Leno back. Letterman has some interesting interviews with certain guests, but Leno's monologe is funnier. I wonder what Letterman thought of Jay having Alaska's Wonder Woman on his show? I turned the channel once she pranced through the door.
The only reason his ratings are so high is because everyone is curious about what he was going to do or say in his first week back; he still is lame. I refuse to watch anything on NBC or even pass the channel to give them any sort of ratings, they do not deserve it.
Conando will always and is always the best late night host there is. Love you Coco!
Please state your age if you like Leno. They'll all be over 40.
They're all a waste of time. Turn on the science channel or Natgeo.
I can't believe that people still watch Leno.
The guy reminds me of the kid in school that would narc on you, stab you in the back, lie, and act like they didn't know what they did wrong. And to top it off, whines " I don't know why people pick on me" Yuck, the guy is creepy......get rid of him.
I'm glad Jay has the ratings. I just wish he had moved to another network and taken those ratings with him. NBC doesn't deserve them and then Jay could have avoided all this hostility.
I like Jay and the fact that his jokes are funny but not hateful like so many other comedians--
I like Leno, but I do think the ratings are because it's his first week back. Give it a month or so and this to shall pass.
If Craig Ferguson had the chance to host the Tonight Show for just one week he would be revealed as the TRUE heir apparant to the Carson seat. Ferguson is funnier than Dave and Jay combined....he just needs to be seen EARLIER.
It's just a matter of who has the right joke at the right time.
Dave rules!! Leno is wimpy and safe. Simple humor for simple people. Jay robbed the Tonight Show from Carson and Coco... he's a coward. We'll see where his ratings are in the fall when Conan comes back!!
what a surprise - First in his time slot for the previous 13 years and number one again.
Letterman used to be funny, but now he's a bitter old man who can't do anything but insert politics into every show. I don't watch late night to hear his political views.
I loved him back in the 90s when he would go into restaurants and do skits etc. None of that stuff is really done anymore, and Stupid Pet Tricks is a very rare event.
Since nbc screwed the pooch and replaced Leno with Conan. And made the mess it created, finally put Leno back where he belongs through controversry of it being Leno's fault, I think they need to get rid of Jeff Zucker. He really did a lousy job at his job. Tell him to quit thinking. Leave Leno where he is.
To me Conan was not very funny, and Leno is better than Dave. So I think Leno will own late night TV for many years. Conan will end up on Fox and will beat Dave, but not Leno.
I don't get it, Leno just isn't funny. Everything he does is stale and predictable; you can fill in the punch line before he does. He and Carlos Mencia must be channeling each other. How they both came to be known as comedians is beyond me.
Jay is comfortable, light and easy....something people like to watch at the end of a long day, before they turn out the lights.
I'm just waiting for TEAM COCO.. if all the same to you guys!
"The newness will wear off".....oh really? The 16 YEAR 'newness'? You Letterman hacks make me laugh. Oh well, at least you do, because HE cant, what with being so unfunny and all. Keep writing, your wishful thinking is quite amusing. Jay Leno is a talented, funny performer and a decent man to boot. HE did not do anything wrong.
Good point Roy! No way anyone should watch Jay, not after that whole Conan drama – that's the real Leno, power-driven, old fashioned cold pizza.
I wish everyone would stop blaming Leno, or Conan for that matter. The whole debacle was COMPLETELY the fault of NBC. They made promises to Conan that they didn't want to keep, tried something insane to make it work (and save money) and then pulled the rug out from everyone when it all came crashing down.
Leno will fall into his old routine and America will eat it up. He's so middle of the road. He's comfortable. He'll rule once again when everyone wants to mellow out with their old pal.
Conan is a funny and talented guy who got shafted. He handled it with class by stepping down but still securing extra money for his staff (and gave up some of his own settlement for them too, I heard). I hope he does move to fox at 10:30 or 11 pm. I don't care for any of these shows enough to stay up to or past midnight.
I wish one of the guests would put Jay in his place and make people see the chin for what he really is: A conniving little monkey who should have been off the air years ago. Why do people still think the man is funny?
And let's not forget, all these numbers are speculated upon by the 25,000 ratings boxes out in the world. I suspect that Leno gets far fewer viewers than reported, but maybe I have a higher estimation of IQ levels in the US than they deserve.
yah lets see how long he lasts at #1...
I used to watch Leno, but not after the way he treated Conan.
There’s a lot of debate here about who’s funnier, Jay or David.
For a real laugh, why not count (it might take a while!) the absolutely huge number of comments generated by this bit of showbiz trivia, and then have a look at some of today’s other articles – possibly starting with ‘Americans cooling on climate change, survey says’ – to compare the relatively paltry number of blogs generated by those stories.
Funny, isn't it, the things people seem to care most about?
Letterman is not a nice person nor is he funny. How he stays on the air with so many talented people out there is amazing.
I would have dumped him years ago. CBS you paying way to much for this clown, show some guts and brains get rid of HIM asap.
Leno does well because he is a nice guy, you can't say that about Letterman.
For those Conan fans, you must remember he is solely responsible for his own demise. He attempted a coup against Leno 5 years ago by threatening to leave if he was not annointed Tonight Show Czar. It is his bed now he can sleep in it. He should have done the right thing 5 years ago and just left if he did not think the time table for his ascension was fast enough. But I suspect he knew he could never beat out Leno in the ratings so he took the coward's approach.
I never been a Leno fan. Letterman is funnier.
I am sooooo happy Jay Leno is back he is funnier than all of
I like Leno the best. I stoped watching Dave because of that frut cake band leader, he is a fool. Coan is just bad...He loves himself to much. The best thing about all of these guys being on so late is that they are on so late. Coan should just go lay down by his dish and stay there.
Leno is aweful. Not funny at all. Letterman has been the only true late-night comedian in the 11:35 time slot. He has a way of humorously discussing current issues, including headlines concerning his personal life. So who will retire first, Leno or Letterman? Where will Conan pop up? Fox? This will be fun to watch unfold.
"It bothers me when people conflate "better" and "more popular". Clearly Leno has proven to be more popular than both Conan and Dave, but that doesn't mean he's better. That's like saying a Chevy is better than a Ford because GM sold more cars last year."
This comment by another poster is the most intelligent comment I have read to date on the subject. I tuned in to watch Jay the last few nights out of curiosity. What did I see? The same tired old routines like "headlines" and "Battle of Celebrity Jaywalkers (Jersey Shores Version)". Jay is popular because he is "vanilla" and predictable, not because he is original or "better" than Conan. Conan's originality, creativity, spontanity, and humor far exceed Leno IMO. I'm afraid these same attributes were too much for older audiences who prefer the bland humor of Leno.
As for the ratings, the jury is still out. My thought is that Leno is a survivor and his ratings will stabilize. He was hurt, but people will get over this and watch him again because they watched him before.
The numbers would have been higher on Tuesday, but I didn't want to take a chance that watching Jay would be a vote for the Tina Fey wannabe.
I think if Jay would have left for good then Conan's ratings would have been much stronger. Conan got a raw deal and Jay stinks and I'm waiting until Conan has his new show on Fox!
I just cannot watch Letterman an more knowing he sexually manipulates his staff. I am glad Leno is back on at his old time slot – it gives a good alternative and some one who appeals to me better than Conan did.
my god leno is horrible. Enjoy his jokes you Geriatrics and fattys
Old people do watch Leno and he is OK with that. His humor caters to the 55+ crowd without offending other demographics (except the coco crowd)
One problem I have with watching Dave is how much he has moved his show to cater to the AirAmerica demographics. His only political jokes are decidedly partisan, Like he views his show as a bully pulpit for the Dems, always bashing any conservative. I think most of us want our commedians to be funny, but when they show an overt agenda, it just isn't funny anymore.
Now that the liberals have all branches of government, he has no material, he is literally using two to ten year old material bashing Bush because he is stil having his Obama orgasm from 2008. His AirAmerica group is shrinkin, they were a younger domographicd, and Dave is a 60+ ogre. The Dems even closed down airAmerica from lack of interest. If / When Coco returns, he will take more of dave's virwers then Leno anyway.
Dave was the funniest in my mind until a couple years ago, But to get his numbers back, he is going to have to make his show less politially slanted. I don't know if he is willing to give up his bully pulpit to make that happen. In the meantime, Leno will dominate the slot
Jay being back on Tonight Show brings a little piece of history back to me. I like him. Never quite got the humor of Conan and Letterman's just "icky". Glad to watch Jay again for a while. Best part about it all is we have choices!!! Thankfully that's the best thing and we can tell others why we like what we like. YAY!!! America!!!!
It still doesn't make sense to me that so many haters are predicting complete failure for Leno. He beat Letterman for 10 years straight before NBC made the stupid decision to replace him with Conan, who couldn't come close to matching Leno's ratings. But I guess those who are bitter would rather ignore history.
THE DUMBING OF AMERICA.
Conan O'brien is so much BETTER and SMARTER than jay will ever hope to be it's actually hilarious.
Any IMBECILE who watches that mega-chinned moron leno needs to have their head examined.
Conan O'Brien is the BEST.
The writers' strike pointedly showed who had the real comedic talent –Conan literally crashed when trying to make it on his own & Leno was brilliant (actually funnier than when he relied on his army of writers)! I love Conan, but Leno is innately the better stand-up comic! Too bad there wasn't room for both as both are better than the cynical, sarcastic Letterman. Go Jay!
Conan couldn't make it @ 11:35 because his followers have to be in bed by then.
Let the novelty wear off and then check back – of course ratings will be high the first few weeks as everyone checks in to see what he's doing
Steve – you are an idiot.
Jay Leno is garbage. He is a hack that steals jokes and bits and is notoriously known to be a jerk to people.
This is the same guy that hid in a closet before he stole the job from Letterman.
I don't care if he had the most popular show on TV – i have never and will never watch him.
My take...Letterman; intellectual humor, Leno; superficial humor, Conon; physical humor, Fallon; artistic humor...who cares anyway...
Glad to see Jay back at the helm. Jay Leno is the funniest man on late night, after him I'm asleep.
LENO SUCKS!!!! Old people like Leno or peoplw with no real sense of humor. They're the same people who liked Ray Romano's show but never liked Scrubs or Arrested Development. If you like cutting edge intelligent humor turn the dial AWAY from Jay Leno. He's got no class, no spine and no humor.
Jay Leno is the greatest. I have always liked his show, especially his monologue and I like his personality. Never have liked Letterman's attitude. i don't care what happened, I'm just glad Jay is back!!!
Jay is gradually sliding into the abyss.
Conan is in the bullpen – but NOT for NBC....
The most harried people right now are Leno's bookers – if they can't book Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp or John Lennon Jay will fire them on the spot.....
Available guests down to: Richard Hatch, Kathy Griffin, Larry King, The Rock, Dr. Fill, Danny Gokey, 4th place Olympic finishers.
Leno is cold pizza.
I believe Jay Leno is a really good guy but I absolutely hate to watch him. He is not even in the same entertainment league as Letterman or Carson.....
Leno's BEST bits were all stolen from other people.
Leno's Headlines stolen from Letterman's Small Town Town News
Leno's Jaywalking stolen from Howard Stern's Homeless Game
Here's my take. (and by the way – I'm completely right on this. lol)
Conan – totally not funny.
Leno – marginally funny.
Letterman – the best of the bunch.
The numbers are from rubbernecking - watching the train wreck that is the fallout over Conan/Leno.
The show is brutal, even Leno doesn't seem to be enthused about his bits.
I watched Jay again this week
Last night with Brett Farve was great
Wednesday with Sara Palin fantastic.
Thank Goodness he is back
Despite all the critics.....
I have always enjoyed him as host of the TONIGHT SHOW .
Big mistake has been corrected..
I am back to watching a late night show
Conan was in over his head his twitching like a kid in front of class was not entertaining.
I had to turn the TV off sadly or find a movie.
Nothing else on...till Jay came back! .
NEVER watched Letterman don't like him at all.
Welcome Back JAY!!
First of all, if you have to work the next day; what are you doing up so late?
The truth is both men appeal to different people.
Does that mean one is better than the other, NO.
If any one is to blame it's NBC, because they are the ones playing with both these mens lives.
Jay is a crook he stole most of his bits from others. I am completely confused as to how we could have voted for Bush twice AND how we can still be giving Leno the ratings he does not deserve
I think we've already proven that the Neilson Rating System no longer works in our day and age. These so called 'Neilson Families' are too little and too far between. The system just doesn't work any more.
Who cares, Leno is still lame and lame is usally #1 on TV
Letterman who joke about his own mother dieing. He is basically a scum bag as showed in how he treated his "wife" and son during the years when he could not control his sexual urgeses. I will not give him the reward of watching this piece of s_)_)&)t.
Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel both are the future.
While I might agree some that Conan wasn't funny, and his schtick was old-farty, Leno's impersonal stage and stale gags are not cutting it for the much-vaunted Tonight Show. Dave should have that one, and see it out with grace over the next five years or so.
I tried watching Jay for three nights this week, and had to turn off during the monologues. I came back for the guests, but he was still plodding-it's not just his writers who are tired, it's the whole set-up. I didn't expect a totally new Tonight concept, but did expect both energy and humor. Dave is such a better interviewer, isn't afraid to take chances, and is much easier to watch-he's terrific.
To all you Leno haters......
HAHAHAHAHAHA! All you do is cry and whimper like sissies! I am 34 years old – and LOVE Jay.
Conan is a goofball...... and if he is preferred by the younger age group I feel sorry for this country!
Leno is a scumbag...I would love to break his stupid jaw.
Never been able to watch Leno. Unfunny, unoriginal, insincere.
At least Conan was creative. Lot's of geriatrics don't get him. When they die off, Leno will too. Hopefully.
Leno's ratings say it all. Conan isn't funny and Letterman's an Ass
They all suck to be quite honest but the worse of the lousy bunch is Jimmy Fallon, he really sucks the big ones.
What??? Jack Paar is not the Tonight Show host??? Since when?? Did I miss something?
Connan o brian was useless – I stopped watching him in 1998 and next time I heard about him was when leno was moving to different time ... he was not even that good with out andy richtor
Even with his no-frills "shed" of a studio and without a band or "sidekick," Craig Ferguson is by far the wittiest and most entertaining of the late night hosts.
Let us at least agree that Leno can lisp a joke better than all the others. Sorry... I meant "attempted joke".
I will not say Leno is better than Conan never because it is not true. Everyone here should watch the show Late Shift (I might have the name wrong), its a unofficial telling of when Jay did the same thing to Letterman. Really good show btw.
Conan never got the time to feel out the time slot. How can you find out if a anything is working in 7 months.
And Conan was not holding out for himself he was trying to make sure all those people he worked with money too. Come fall COCO will Rule Late Night
To say that the Leno show is better at 11:30 than it was at 10:00 is just bulls#!t because the show is still filmed at 4:30 in the afternoon with all the same writers anyway. Jay just needs to retire so he can be with all his fans at the nursing home.
God, you people are old and wouldn't know comedy if you were smart enough to learn how to operate your DVRs and find it. Conan rules.
Jay does have high first week back ratings but they are no where near what Conan did in his first week on the Tonight Show. When you consider that and the fact that Jay does not have to follow a primetime show by a has-been TV personality (being Jay Leno) with ratings that are pitiful it is no surprise he is doing well (there is nothing driving viewers away from there TVs). Now i am no fan of Jay (he is a little to arrogant and smug and to me it looks like he has stopped caring about the show a long time ago) and i will admit i do like Conan (hopefully he doesn't end up being on fox somehow i think that would taint him) but really The Tonight Show has been dead for a very long time and NBC should let it die already. But what do i know!!
I'm sorry fellas but Jay needs a personality transplant before I'll ever watch his show. I don't like watching him at all compared to Conan O'Brien who in my opinion is much more fun and entertaining to watch. Older people who have watched Jay for years will continue watching because they don't adapt to change and get used to doing things without thinking it through.
He just had Sarah Palin on his show... WTF ppl?!? This woman is so retarded why does anyone even watch her? It scares me to think people are interested in watching retarded politicians so much I'm building a rocket ship so I can fly to another planet....
Letterman is much funnier than Leno, even though he's stolen bits from Dave.
And Craig Ferguson is the funniest of all!
Conan is silly, not funny. Jimmy Fallon is not the least bit funny, either.
CBS at 12:30 is the place for me. Craig Ferguson is funny without having to denigrate people like Leno, Conan and Letterman. He doesn't need cue cards and house bands and sidekicks.
They're all good, but CRAIG FERGUSON is the best entertainer since Johnny Carson. He's not only funny but is original. His quick intelligence makes for a more enlightened show.
Jay's the best so Glad that Immature Dweezle Conan isnt a host. Johnny Carson was the last Real era Host.
Jimmy Fallon and Conan are both Immature dweezels. of todays Era.... Jay leno has the Maturity thats why he's number 1.
Best guy working one of these programs today is Jimmy Kimmel. He is talented, smart, and hilarious. Anyone agree?!?
Jay Leno is a first class jerk, and his audience is made up of people who think Taco Bell is "too spicy".
Having been a pretty devout Olympics watcher and a big fan of NBC over the years, I was *half* tempted to watch Leno the first week back. And then I remembered how unfunny he is, and how upset I am still about what NBC did to Conan, and I said to myself: "Self, you're better than that. Don't fall into the trap. I know you're proud of our U.S. athletes and you'd like to see their interviews, but then you'd be watching LENO...and that's not allowed."
Speaking of Olympics, my podium looks like this:
Gold – Craig Ferguson
Silver – Jimmy Fallon
Bronze – Jimmy Kimmel
Copper – David Letterman
...and... (wait for it) ...
Aluminum – Jay Leno
I doesn't bother me that Leno is getting good ratings. What does bother me is that the American audience is dumb enough to tune him in.
I like it that Jay Leno is back at the Tonight Show. Jay should never have been forced out in the first place. His ratings were high. I think right now the best late night talk show host is Craig Ferguson. If he were to compete with Leno it would be close. I also like to watch Jimmy Fallon as well. He is a nice guy and a funny guy.
Leno's #1 in the ratings? Who cares. The general public has never been an arbiter of good taste. If they were, Michael Bolton and Celine Dion would have never sold any CD's. Letterman dwarfs Leno in humor, wit, and off-the-cuff, razor-sharp irreverant banter.
Leno is vaniila and painfully boring. He's a puppet in a suit that sniffs Hollywood movie stars jocks....thats his ammo. All the stars come on his show cause they know he'll pander to them. With Letterman, you're gonna get challenged. He's edgier and he thinks outside the box.
I can't believe there are people who feel sorry for Conan. He was terrible. Bottom line he didn't do his job, therefore he lost his job. His interviewing skills were awful, all he wanted to do was mug for the camera. I don't think he ever listened to a single word that any of his guests ever said.
Jay Leno is a class act. Letterman reminds me of a high school jerk.and is mean spirited. Leno was asked to go to a new spot where NBC could give Conan his old slot. Conan was going to take his ball and go home because he did not get to play in the time slot he wanted. Leno got the shaft, Conan got the slot. ONLY...Conan could not carry the show.....He was not Leno.....and when the chips were down, he was not a class act either. BOO HOO Feel sorry for me. I do not think so.....CONAN....Jay gracefully stepped aside. His feelings were hurt to be cast aside.....No one has thought of that.....Pull your britches up in that weird way you have Conan and go along your merry way.....You got 35 mil to leave and can get a new show soon. It is a win win for you....You're sad to attack Jay......
NBC exec who came up with the idea to replace Jay Leno with Conan O'Brien should get paid to find another job outside television. Who in their right mind really thought Conan could fill Jay Leno shoes. Even with his own show he rarely won his time slot. To be quite honest he really wasn't that funny at all. In fact Sarah Palin was lot more funnier than he was. Thank god I lived long enough to see a black president, the Saints win the Super Bowl and Jay Leno back on the Tonight Show. Life is good.
I am a huge CoCo fan. Only time I've watched Leno is when he had Brett Favre on. (GO VIKES) I refuse to watch from now on, poorly writen jokes arent my thing.
The "never going to watch Jay" ppl continue to care about Jay...why else would they comment?
When Conan shows up again, his ratings will probably be the same as they were when he was at NBC – low...and...the "Coco" fans will blame Jay for Conan's failures. Why? Because Jay is still on the air and ppl keep watching him. *cry*
Interesting how the article doesn't acknowledge Kimmel...maybe not enough watch him to make a story? Jay should be credited with breathing new life into late-night. If it wasn't for him, no would be talking about this. Great job Jay!
Leno needs to get off the air for good. This man is a manipulative liar who needs to let go. Carson didnt try to snake The Tonight Show back after giving it up; Leno needs to respect the show without tainting its good name.
Can't wait for Conan to come back on another network to combat this fool!
Jimmy Kimmel is better than them all.
Can't believe people will still watch Leno. His jokes and personality is lame. Add his lack of integrity and character in how he handled the Conan fiasco...and it baffles me even more. He's like Letterman's Kenny Bania (a little Seinfeld reference :)
Letterman and Ferguson are the best....will always watch CBS late night I loved Johnny Carson and frankly Jay you are NO JOHNNY CARSON....
here's the thing I'm no Fnut but I think you are, I like Fallon, I think he's funny if you don't buy his humor then don't, no one's forcing you anyway. Watch those you wanna watch moron...!
Team Conando! I used to be Team Jay; but no longer. I don't blame him for coming back. I blame him for never leaving.
This doesnt surprise me on bit! Jay is back were he belongs and Jimmy also rocks!!
Bizzr you are definitely right, Americans as a whole are really really stupid, that is why for the most part they watch Leno, anyone else taxes thier ability to think and most Americans can't think for themselves that is why they watch some stupid moron like Jay Leno who couldn't tell a funny joke if his life depended upon it, even with joke writers this lameo is always lame and off timing.
Jay Leno from what I have heard is a terrible person who doesn't deserve to do well. I for one will never watch his show again. Go Dave! Go Conan!!
Leno has no character, no back bone and is nothing less than a little sissy whiner, as soon as his numbers dove to the bottom he started crying like a little baby, once the newness of him being back wears off his numbers will plummet again, then who is he going to whine about?
Leno only has high numbers now because everyone is watching to see how things are going but once they see it is just the same ole Leno his numbers will plummet and go much lower than ever before, America hates a whiny loser and he is the whiniest of all losers ever, what a loser, loser Leno!
Leno is awesome! Letterman s***s!! He is boring and has stupid jokes. Leno will kick his A** again! Go Jay!
I wouldnt watch Jay Leno if he was the only thing on TV. Good thing I work until his time is past.
He is one of the reason I have boycotted the entire NBC Network. If they make it, if they show it, if they looked at it, I dont. They should suffer for the poor decisions they make just like the rest of us do.
The whole lot of late night hosts and their shows are a snooze. Cookie-cutter tripe. With one, and only one, brilliant exception: Craig Ferguson.
Craig Ferguson is the funniest man on t.v. period. He is different, changes it up all the time. He doesn't follow a script to the tee like Jay. Hell, the guests on his show rarely end up promoting what they came there for.
Jay seems to ignore the guest if they stray off topic, and jumps to the next question. I'm not a Jay basher, he has his audience, but I prefer Letterman, and Fallon still seems to be looking for acceptance, he's funny though.
Who cares about Leno having higher ratings than Dave? The travesty here is that Fallon has more viewers than Ferguson!
I was always in the habit of watching Leno after the newscast, MST zone. I am sure that there are many like me who did the same. I could never remember when Leno was on in the earlier time slot, before the newscast. IMHO, Leno's perch at the top is here to stay, for good.
I really miss Johnny Carson.
Wow...I read 8 responses and one thing strikes me...why in the world do you all care what other people think ?? This does smack of slightly interesting just because of my profession.
You all need to get a life...Co-co! Co-co!
imho, if you have seen one Conan show, all that follow are just copies. Letterman needs new material also, the recycled Bush, Palin jokes are leave me yawning. Leno for the time being is new, whether his material goes stale quickly remains to be seen. I do find myself searching other channels for something less anesthetic,
I love Jay...so glad to be back watching late night TV again...Couldn't stand that immature Conan. Who cares about what happened in the past when NBC made a disasterous decision....move on folks, just like the other guy who took the money and moved on.
Leno. Not. Funny.
We all watch who we want to watch I get up fairly early in the morning for work but watched Leno. Conan and Letterman where not for me its as simple as that Ok I fall into the slightly older catagorie but lots of older folks dont have to get up early in the mornings so Leno is more appealing late night comedy the kids can stay up later for Conan and Letterman everyone to their own taste lets stop being nasty.
I wasn't a fan of how NBC handled the Conan vs. Leno affair, but will watch Leno over Letterman. I think Letterman can be funnier, but his comedy has become mean spirited...there's enough negativity out there without comedians joining in. His jokes, like those about Palin, are personal and subsequently come up a bit short of being, at least to me, funny. I'll take Jay's pot-shots/jokes and think they're funnier simply because they don't seem to be coming from as dark a place. Dave's starting to come across as a grouchy old man. He's become as polarized the widgets we've elected to office who've forgotten what they're suppose to be doing...our business. Dave is suppose be entertaining.
I cringed watching the debut of Leno 2.0, which I did in the same way I would stare at a car wreck while passing by. The Tonight Show franchise has been desecrated, it is a hollow shell of its once great self. The whole thing is pitiful. I can't imagine how Leno would feel good about this. I would be embarassed beyond words if I were him. The whole thing just feels wrong. Conan has integrity and did the right thing. Jay is running this thing into the ground while cackling madly. What a shame...
Leno is a joke, he needs to go away!
i don't feel sorry for a guy who was paid 40 million dollars to walk away, despite being a failure. good to have u back jay!!
NBC made the decisions, not Leno. Why boycott Leno? It won't bring back Conan. Conan does better later night anyway- he's too crude for the earlier time slot and many of his gags are too silly. The masturbating bear? Really? Who wants to watch that? Stunts like this is why he couldn't support the numbers NBC wanted. His pride kept him from continuing on the Tonight Show, and yet he walked away with MILLIONS!
Leno is comfortable- and is often fresh. Jimmy Fallon? The best late nighter yet!
Conan's tweets are funnier than Jay Leno's act any night.
I didn't even realize that Jay was back on TV. And who is this f*cknut that says Jimmy Fallon "rocks"..he is a complete MORON (both Fallon and the commentator, of course)
Conan was just plain obnoxious on all counts – the guy that everyone would really just as soon punch in the face; Fallon is boring to the point that I never saw an entire show; Leno's ego got in his way and we all saw what he could do without his Late Show writers – ugh; and Letterman needs to dump that loudmouth band leader and his squad of geek targets – that stopped being funny in highschool.
The funniest guy on late night (or late late night) right now is Ferguson by a long shot: high energy, spontanious material, good guest play. When his show is over it leaves you wanting more.
*** Leno owns Letterman just like he always has. This is why Letterman hates him so much. ***
Letterman hates Leno because Leno is a sleazebag who stabbed Letterman's idol Carson in the back to get his show. Oh, and Letterman is crying all the way to the bank, since he makes more than twice what Leno does.
Jay is a jackass, and people who find his godawful "jokes" funny are morons.
*** Whether you like or hate Leno or Letterman, one things for sure, no one misses Conan ***
Uh, actually, you're a moron.
All he has done is to pack his show with headliners to attract the viewers but the fact remains, it is still the lame and tired old stuff.
He has become the new Bob Hope: predictable and old-fashioned and dull. HE IS NOT FUNNY.
I love Jay. Glad he's back. I feel sorry for Conan, but hey, Conan just wasn't funny. Conan acts out every joke he tells and then stands and waits for applause. He just didn't keep my attention.
I tuned in for 5 min of leno and he was still his BORING self. HIS jokes were so boring and stupid. I cant wait til Conan comes back with a vengeance.. .. Least he is funny.
Leno obviously does well. Conan fans are doing everything they can to disparage Leno's audience and rationalize Conan's inability to get ratings.
Leno will maintain his 5 million or so viewers like he had before he moved time slots, like he brought to the 10 pm time slot and like he brought back to his time slot again. If Conan gets a competing show, he will once again have his 2 million viewers, but Leno wont lose any, they are two different age and audience types.
I didn't really care for Conan, but his last couple of weeks were great, Glad to have Jay Leno back. Now I wish Conan followed him, I probably would have started watching him. Both of these guys are better than Letterman.
I'm still wating for the king of late night to return, hands down funniest and best, rest well my friend.
Jay claimed that NBC told him that Conan would be ok with moving to 12:00 or 12:05. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see through this lie! I don't watch Leno because I have lost all respect for him. I find it astounding that he would lie straight faced to the world. It says a lot about this character.
Just shows how low the average intelligence is in the U.S., but we get what the majority wants. Like Bush for eight years.
it's not that I don't like Leno, I just lost a lot of respect for him after the whole Conan thing. He passed the blame to NBC but Leno knew that taking his time slot back would screw Conan. He claims that NBC told him that Conan was ok with taking the time slot back but we all know that was a lie! Did Leno think that his viewers were niave enough to belive this? I choose not watch Leno because he showed the world what a scumbag he really is!
I'm just kind of wondering, even if Jay tops the ratings this whole week, that doesn't mean he's back to the top, it's just a little too early to say that, I mean, a decent time to say that Leno is back on top when he consistently remains that ratings in 6 months or so, then when can say yeah he's number one again...
Congratz to Jimmy Fallon...! I totally heart this guy...!
And I miss Conan too...
I dare him to invite Sarah Palin to play Jaywalker. Now THAT I would tune in for. Otherwise, not so much.
I no longer watch Jay as of March 1. I watched Jay since Johnny retired. I am all for when you tell someone they are taking over, then don't go back on your word and take it back. It is a big mess and the guy over NBC admitted it was NBC's fault and could be handled differently. Conan got screwed over. I wish the best for Conan and hope that he returns to tv. I like Conan.
Jay Leno's rating numbers are consistent with what he had before...which are higher than Letterman's...
Letterman's numbers are very consistent...they will not improve
Fallon's numbers are good, we believe is because of his nicely promoted, "anniversary week"...
Craig Ferguson...in our opinion the best of them all...will be a fantastic replacement for Letterman...
The fact that he's Scotish (US citizen now) might cause problems for some blogs...(because of accent and sense of humor)...not for us...
When Conan starts in FOX will be interesting...we'll see how big his fan base really is...he will not affect Leno, nor Letterman...they have their own solid fan base...he needs to create his own...
Whether you like or hate Leno or Letterman, one things for sure, no one misses Conan
Love Craig Ferguson. He does thoughtful interviews and his humor is witty. Not particularly interested in the others.
Dave Letterman is the real deal and is much more in tune with his viewers. Leno will ride for a while being new but he will never hold viewers like he did in the past. They will filter to other shows eventually.
Dave is very original with great writers while Jay steals alot of ideas from others among Howard Stern. He has ripped off a ton of his ideas including Jaywalking and Jeopardy.
Conan was alot funnier then Jimmy Fallon in that time slot but couldn't carry those younger viewers to the tonight show.
Yeah maybe a dead dog is funnier than Fallon but Fallon is way funnier than Leno
what alot of people dont realize is Conan's ratings were higher than letterman. and Conan's ratings at late night was catching both leno and letterman. conan is the youngest of the 3 majors and when he goes to fox its going to eclipse leno and letterman. Jimmy fallon is just horrible. how obvious can you be looking at the teleprompter... then again it was the same on SNL. he has never been funny by himself. he leeches off others to look funny. regardless. leno lost cool points when he sucked up to sarah palin.
Everyone seems to want to blame Jay for all that has happened. Nothing that happened was his fault. NBC told him some time ago that he would be replaced on the Tonight Show. It was their big big mistake, not his. There is nothing wrong with Conan except he just isn't as well known as Jay which has a lot to do with the timeslot he was on. I think Jay is a real nice guy and I did try watching Conan once but didn't stay with it. Hate David Letterman. Jay is the man. Glad NBC realized what a stupid mistake they made. Glad to hear his ratings are coming back.
It might have more to do with the shows before and after Leno, than Leno himself. Or, the fact that more people will tune in to watch certain guests but, not Leno himself.
Jay's ratings will rebound and stabilize right where they were before the show changed time slots because that's where his show belongs. It never belonged in the 10 p.m. timeslot and those of us who watched shows on NBC at that time knew that. I love Jay and watch him regularly at 11:30 but never watched at 10:00. It just 'didn't fit'. I now watch other networks at the 10:00 timeslot, so NBC lost an avid viewer when they changed the lineup. Glad to see everything is going back to normal. Good luck to Jay!!
A dead dog is funnier than Fallon.
Ferguson is far and away the funniest guy in late night. Jon Stewart is also a comic genius but his is a different kind of show. Haven't decided about Fallon yet. I think he just need a little seasoning and he'll be very good.
Carson understood one thing neither Leno nor Letterman will ever get...how to really showdase their guests. Johnny never talked over his guests and never tried to be funier than they were...he showed nothing but respect for them. Oh Johnny, how we do miss you.
Leno steals jokes from Mitt Romney. He is bland and boring. His ratings are already falling. After a while, he will falter. He should have retired on top. Howard Stern was right.
Jay Leno...ugh...can't stand him...!
But way to go Jimmy Fallon!!!!!!!!! I love this guy sooooooo much...! He's fun, and YOUNG...! Can't move on with his Bothered segment with Rpatz...LOL!
Leno owns Letterman just like he always has. This is why Letterman hates him so much. Ther only thing Letterman can do about is cry, cry, cry. And he always does
I love this hate hate hate hate yeah.
Leno is a hack! He stole that show back because he couldn't get the ratings competing in primetime with real programming. I disliked Dave Letterman and always watched Leno, not because he was specifically funny, but because he was the only alternative to Letterman. Now I'll only watch Letterman. And, btw, Craig Ferguson is funnier than all of them put together.
Basically, Dave Letterman caved in this week. Dave knew that Leno would be a hard-charger out of the chute.....so he really didn't book much against Jay.
Jay will whip Dave's butt this week but gradually tail down to only being marginally better than Dave.
Thats where Dave likes it. Cuz Dave's audience is more sophisticated and up-tempo where Jay's is less IQ and such.
The no-minds love Leno.
The upper crusts and sophisticates (of which there are a limited supply) love Letterman.
Leno is very formulaic. Dave is too, but slightly less so.
Both guys are very predictable in their jokes and moves.
I'm back to watching the tonight show. I hadn't been for the past 10 months, for no other reason then it just plain SUCKED for those ten months.
Thank goodness Jay is back!
Leno stopped being funny ever since he took over the Tonight Show. He gives a terrible interview and appears quite awkward at times with his guests. A majority of his skits and material are ideas he's taken from others and he's shown no class in his stand with NBC. A real man with some class would've left to find another job given the prior agreements he made with NBC execs. Of course when you're not funny, not original and can't relate you stick around to what you know.
Ferguson is the funniest, Stewart #2 and everyone else is much lower.
I just don't think Leno is funny. It's his politics for me. To each his own.
I guess I do not understand the anger against Jay. He was forced off by NBC and Conan. Conan came in and took over the leading late night talk show and ran it into the ground. The reason NBC brought Jay back was not that he demanded it but the Conan tanked. Based on the dismal ratings NBC had no choice but to bring Jay back in hopes of recovering.
They all can be funny when they get right lines from the writers, otherwise they are not. I don't watch them, it's time wasted, but I read all of you people and you are the funniest and I get to know the stupidities that the American people waste their time watching on.
Geeeeezzz!!!! So tired of everyone blaming and hating on Jay Leno. Get over it already. If sooo many people loved Conan so much then why weren't you watching him giving him the support he needed then. Jay got screwed over first. If you were doing something you loved so much and one day someone tells you it's over and then you get the chance to do it again...wouldn't you. If Jay didn't take the job back it would have went to someone else and I for one am glad to see him back where he belongs. He was number one until the day he left and Conan could not produce those numbers. If he had the ratings it wouldn't have been an issue. So if you were one of the ones not watching Conan...blame yourself.
"Coco" fans, just to let you know, you really do come off whinny and hate filled. This was a business decision, one that is already paying off for the network. Leno had no more to do with the decision to drop Conan than I did. To say Leno isn't funny kind of sounds stupid when you look at the plain facts that he led the ratings for 17 years and is doing it again! Get over it and move on people, this country faces real problems and this isn't one of them!
Conan was Funny and Jay's jokes are too dated
and i think dave might think about retiring soon
and i think we need somthing fresh and new
i think all three shows are same old same old.
and its seems really lazy they keep them around.
the networks need to try something new..
I hear a fat lady singng – it's time for you to bow out and go away.
I used to watch Jay Leno. He made me chuckle. Then Conan came on and I was like "wow, the Tonight Show actually can make me laugh." Now that Leno is back on I feel like I am watching recycled crap.
music to let you know when to laugh
music to let you know when to laugh
There, that is EVERY Leno episode. Sounds boring, yeah it is boring.
Leno is a hack. I am NOW with Coco!
Letterman will host the show until he retires. Leno will most likely drop dead in the Tonight Show chair. Ratings mean nothing to me at all. If you like Letterman watch him, if you like Leno watch him. Whats with all the bitching???????
Are you serious? Jay Leno is horrible. Anybody who knows the art of comedy knows that Leno is a hack. His jokes are lame and only appeal to those who can't understand the complexity of Dave or Coco's jokes. Conan has won Emmys for his writing on SNL, the Simpsons, and Late Night. He actually has credibility. Leno, on the other hand, reads off a prompter and is essentially a lackey for NBC big wigs. Conan an is in the same air as Stewart and Colbert. The people who enjoy Leno are the same a** clowns who probably feel that Larry the Cable Guy is funny. Jay's monologues are painful to watch. His jokes are just plain "simple" and rather insulting to viewers who actually understand comedy art. The reason old people like Leno is because they can say "Oh wow, he referenced something I actually understand!" Pathetic. Get that crap out of here.
I think it's pretty obvious, the only people that still watch late-night commercial TV are those that don't spend all their time on computers. In this era of Video on Demand and PVR's with video recording capabilities, why would anyone sit in front of a TV beyond 10PM?
Oh yeah, I guess the older crowd still would.
But c'mon, did anyone see Sarah Palin on the Tonight Show? She LITERALLY did her own stand-up bit. That's WAY more entertaining than Letterman interviewing Mitt Romney the same night...YAAAAWN. If he keeps up interviews like that, I think he can stay on top.
Jay Leno – go away. Along with Jon & Kate and all the others. blah blah blah blah blah........
Some posters say Jay Leno isn't funny.
Some posters say Dave and/or Coco aren't funny.
Some posters love Fallon or Ferguson and think they're funny,
And all of them give their high-and-mighty opinions AS IF THEY MEAN ANYTHING.
The numbers don't lie. Jay was, is, and probably will be the late-night ratings king. So SOMEONE (as in, 5+ million people) think he IS funny.
What's really funny is all you wildly opinionated people who clearly do not know what you're talking about.
Who cares if Leno had anything to do with the NBC fiesco. The bigger point is that watching him is about as fun as shoveling kitty litter. Yes, Leno has the best ratings–blah blah blah. If you want to use the argument that this means he is the most talented, worthwhile, or whatever–then I suppose you would also argue that Britney Spears is a musician of superior talent, McDonalds produces the highest quality food, and cookie-cutter suburban homes are architectural masterpieces. C'mon folks–quality is somehow always less popular. Besides, could Leno ever have outpunked Joaquin Phoenix the way Dave did?
Seriously, he's just not funny.
I think the Nielson system is an antique. Coco is waaaay funnier. SNL, The Simpsons... Jay is familiar to the older folks.
Watching Conan is like watching 6 year old boys tell potty jokes – immature and not very funny. He is the stale "comedy" from the bad years of SNL. I don't believe he could even win his old time spot now that Jimmy Fallon has had a year of learning behind him.
Jay is comfortable and doesn't wear his politcs on his sleave like Letterman, Stewart and Colbert. I could watch CNN, Fox or MSNBC if I want any more politics before going to sleep.
are you real people that are saying that leno is talented and funny, actually real people? the dude has some sweet cars, but im not sure about talent...
I really love Jay Leno and have had to revert to my old late night viewing ways since he returned. However–if he keeps bashing Canadians by telling people like Apolo Ohno that "what are you supposed to do when the referee has a bacon in one hand and a maple leaf in the other"–he is definitely going to lose some viewers.
I think they should have given Conan more time. I think Jay is funny but so is Conan. The only one I think is an honest guy is Conan.
Leno acts as if he had no other choice ( and he did). Dave cheats on his wife.
I think Conan is the only one with and standards/values.
I think Conan is hilarious...however every one has difference tastes in what is funny. That is what makes the world great...variety.
Leno's "comedy" is the equivalent of vegetable lasagna. Why people watch his bland show, I'll never figure out.
Leno is boring and a Republican. I don't watch him.
Wow, NBC's PR machine is all over this blog. It's so funny that magically there are all these Leno supporters. Where were they when this all blew up? I'd be willing to bet 90% of all the pro-Leno comments resolve to NBC IP addresses.
Jay may be entertaining to some, but whatever his role was in the Tonight Show fiasco, he only proved to be either a crafty backroom dealer or a spineless corporate worm. Conan may not be funny to everyone, but at least he has some integrity.
Old people love Leno.........
So, I haven't watched any late night tv on a consistant basis in years. When I did watch back in the day I was a Carson and Letterman fan. Then round one of the late night wars began and Letterman moved to CBS and Leno got the NBC job....I moved with Letterman. I never found Leno to be funny in the slightest. I did however find Conan to be a breath of fresh air when he joined the scene and made an effort to watch him. I think he is naturally gifted and funny as all get out. Fast forward 17 years and the late night wars the sequel occurs. I haddn't watched any late night in many years and my curiosity got the better of me so I DVR'd both Leno and Letterman for the first three days of the week. I would watch one and then the other to compare. After 17 years I STILL don't get why people like Leno. His jokes are lame, his delivery is awful, his interviews are horrid. Whereas Letterman, to me, is far more entertaining all around. Regardless, I do believe that when Conan comes back, in whatever he does, he is going to rule. Those of us under retirement age must make this happen!!
Jay should be ashamed of himself. He's a lying turd and unfunny atop all of his BS. He's 60 already. How long does he have to torture the rest of America?
They both stink... buy cable and watch STEWART / COLBERT !!!!
Proof that people have lost any decent sense of humor: most people on this board saying they like Leno more than Conan, and then having the audacity to insult Conan for attempting to preserve tradition. Further, some of you actually think Fallon is funny. Leno is a good interviewer for the tonight show, but his monologues are beyond painful. Letterman hasn't changed a thing in the last fifteen or more years. Move on people.
It's quite simple...Jay wins the monologue !!! Quite brilliant to put your best effort when the most people are watching. For Letterman, the monologue has always been a throw away, complete with the constant repetition of some bad line. After the monologue, sleep is the biggest competition for both shows.
Conan took the reigns from Letterman in 1993 and did great things with that show over the next 16 years. I'd love to see him do it again in the future with Letterman's 11:35 show, and go head-to-head with Leno.
Those who like stand-up comedy and joke-reading can watch Leno, and those who enjoy improvisational comedy and sketches can watch Conan. These are two very different approaches to comedy, so they're going to appeal to different types viewers!
Fell asleep before the 11:35 airtime, but I do plan to watch tonight. Because I have to get up early, I usually watched long enough to the original Leno show and view the early segment. As for Jimmy Fallon, I'm certain why NBC hasn't dumpted him already. He's just not funny
I used to love Jay and was sad when he left. Then I got to know and love Conan and think he really got screwed. I actually found myself staying up later when Conan was on because I thought his skits were funnier.
As much as I wanted to see some of the Olympians on Jay this week, I haven't bothered watching. I'm just kind of over it.
Is no one going to metion that these high ratings were after NBC plugged him mercilessly during the Olympics and gave him a kickin' Olympian line-up for week one? Leno is a twit, but America loves Shaun White, Apolo Ohno, and Lyndsay Vaughn. I've found his stardom a mystery since he took over for Carson and I'd watch for Apolo and Shaun.
I'm glad Jay has his spot back at 11:30. Whether he was forced out to make room for Conan..I don't know. This could have been a short term conspiracy by NBC to improve the ratings for the 11:30 time slot by taking Jay away...giving Conan his spot..(knowing Conan could potentially suffer in the ratings against Lettman) and then putting Jay back and he's number one again for the network. For how long is anyone's guess but all this is great for Jay's fans and NBC's customers.
When Conan took over the Tonight Show I switched to Letterman. Never liked Conan... Now I don't like Letterman either. Old stuff... lost his spin.
Keep your chin up, Jay! You're right where you belong... there's no place like home!
i'm from massachusetts and i used to watch the show once in a while... now i'm proud to say i could care less about him or his show. i was hoping it would go down in flames.
Don't you people have better things to do?
I would watch whatever show I wanted if it hadn't been cancelled. And for what? Ratings? This guy gets the ratings?!?! I finished 2 leno "jokes" before he could say them the other night and got through about 45 seconds of drunk ADD Jamie Foxx before I had to turn off the Tonight show. Then he sits there with Sarah Palin and lets her insinuate that Fox news is Fair and Balanced the following night (I saw this clip on the Daily Show). Jesus, really? Are people really that retarded? Unfortunately, this crap is what people wanted instead of Conan, so it appears so.
I absolutely HATE Leno, won't watch him ever, doesn't matter his time slot. I hate him more after he backed out of retiring. Loved Conan, but I watch Dave....then Jimmy Kimmel.
I don't understand how people can watch this trash...
Jay will lead Dave until they are both trounced by Conan upon his return. Their viewership will be divided and Conan's crowd will return to him.
All Jay has to do is keep Jamie Fox from his show. He was pathetic on Monday and how he earned a Grammy is mind boggling. The guy can't sing.
This is quite funny. If people actually knew the history of Jay and how underhanded and dishonest he is, I can't see them watching. "The Late Shift" is fun to watch. Jay is just so talentless it's amazing. He's a joke-reader, not a comic...no comedic timing or original ideas at all. He bulldozes through questions when "interviewing". He screwed Johnny, he screwed Dave and he ROYALLY screwed Conan...it's par for the course with him. He was given multiple options, not just the 10pm show and he turned them down. There is a erason NBC are preventing Conan from taking another show until September; they know that head-to-head he will blow Jay away and they need time to prop up Jay's ratings. If you are looking for "junk food" TV for the simple-minded, watch Jay...that's who his show is written for. That's not just a snide comment; his writers are told to pander to that group. Anyway....watch if you want to, it's quite telling. Personally, his show, any show he is on and any of the people who agree to be his guests will not be on my TV, nor will I pay to watch any of their movies.
Conan, Leno, Letterman and Fallon are all hilarious in their own way, but I DO miss the "out of control humor" Conan had. The "stick to the que card" thing is getting old with the older guys.
Leno, Leno, Leno!!!!!!! I am soooooooooo happy he is back in his regular time slot. He is so nice and funny and a gentleman. None of the problems came from Jay. He only did what he was told he had to do. Conan had the chance to stay, but he was a big baby and bolted. Letterman is a very nasty, mean, person who has no morals.
Not surprising. There are a lot of people who like predictable dated, rehashed and reused comedy.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to companies and who they want to advertise to. I know most advertisers would rather have a smaller number of viewers when they are younger, edgier and more with the times (i.e. buying products other than retirement vacation packages).
Relax people....this is the curiosity bump....people (myself included) tuning in to see if he'll make mention of his "back-stabbing and driving Conan out at NBC"....so far, all three shows have been boring and lame. Only six months until the real king of late night, Conan O'Brien, is back on late night TV with Fox.
Without a doubt Craig Ferguson is the king of late night. His humour is unique. He's just on too late for most to watch. Enjoy Jay Leno too though and glad to see he's doing so well. But there's nobody like Craig tomake you laugh your guts out.
Leno reigned... Leno reigns... Letterman will always be a 2nd and Coco just might cut a bit into Leno; but what a lot of Leno Haters forget is that Coco will also cut into Letterman's numbers... End result? Leno's reign continues love him or lump him... Conan, a nice guy I'm sure, is a comedy writer... period... honestly had no business hosting a late night show... totally non humorous...
Enjoy this well deserved "get back to where you once belong" Leno!
Jay is getting the same ratings he had before and at 10pm. The problem for NBC comes down to the demographics of his audience. Conan's demographics were better suited for advertisers. Jay's are not. That was the whole reason NBC made the decision to move Conan in his spot in the first place.
When Conan goes to FOX, he probably won't beat Jay in head to head ratings but he will crush him in advertising demographics and will make the company he works for the most money. That is the business end of things.
As far as who is funnier, I personally love Conan more. I think he is more relavent and the future of late night. I used to love Jay earlier in his career but he has just become more stale and just not funny. His skits are just plain excrutiating to watch. The funniest thing he has done in a long while was the "Dave Letterman" promo during the Super Bowl. That was awesome.
I can't wait for September to see where Conan goes. I love it. Everyone will have their own and the fans will be happy.
It's the first week. leno is still a TV pimp. Regardless of the ratings for conan he should have retired if his 10p stunk.
@Paul – your first sentence is funnier than anything leno has ever said.
The only thing funny about leno's show is jaywalking. That is probably why he had the bimbo quitter from AK because she fits the bill to a tee!
Leno has never been funny. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks that what he does is comedy.
Jay is for mindless idiots. A joke with a old guy falling asleep within the first two minutes of his first monologe back – hilarious.
Leno is not funny and hasn't been in a long time. And honestly, he comes off as a perverted old man in his interviews with female celebrities. It can be downright uncomfortable to watch at times. He should have just retired.
The lowest common denominator wins again! Just goes to show that safe, recycled / stolen bits will always appeal to more people than creative, original writing. When all of the babyboomers pass on we'll see how relevant he is. Leno can suck it.
Leno is like the guy that walks into the room and likes to tell joke after joke. He is a nice guy and loves to tell jokes and he basically tries to shy away from politics.. He appeals to an older crowd, which I belong to. A lot of his followers are retired and are going to give him consistent ratings.
Dave is an immature egotistical fellow that is very political, mean spirited and takes advantage of his female staff, not a very nice person. If your primary perspective is politics and you are very liberal and you think women are only good for sexual pleasure, then you will like Dave.
Conan is a young fellow that appeals to a young crowd. If he gets a slot on another network I think he will bite more into Dave's crowd, which again will be younger and more liberal.
Bring back Arsenio !!!!!!!!!
The Tonight Show? More like the Jay Leno Show.
Why would any one listen to Howard Stern? Sick freak...
Leno sucks he made a deal with the network when he started. He knew his time was coming and when it did he cried like a little girl. The Leno show is nothing compared to Conan. There is nothing original about Jay Leno, He is not that funny neither are his writers.
You mean Jack Paar has been replaced???
Seriously folks, does everything have to be a contest? Watch whatever show you want, and don't worry that millons of strangers don't have the exact same likes and dislikes as yourself.
I just don't get Leno's attraction. He's so Hollywood, so Vegas, such a cheeseball. I prefer the laid-back humor of Carson and Letterman. Although Ferguson's show is the funniest these days. No band, no sidekicks, no big stars, just off the cuff humor
do you want to know who is funny?
You guys are hilarious – your comments have me chuckling up a storm.
Especially the comment about the "twilight zone...people laughing for no reason...
I think all of you should be comedy writers. Where are you when we need you?
BTW – I am a Leno fan.
When Conan comes back, goodbye ratings for the rest! Long live Coco!
I agree with the previous commentor...love Craig Ferguson, he's the funniest guy, I record him every night and watch him first thing in the morning – he makes my day.
Jay, Dave & Conan all are talented and have their individual style, Jay is middle of the road (like most of us), Dave more sarcastic, and Conan irreverent, and that's how their ratings play out.
Why do people say Leno "retired" or "stepped down"? He was dismissed from the Tonight Show with 5-year notice when he was still #1 in the ratings because NBC thought he wouldn't keep it up for five more years. But he did. There's no accounting for taste, but he is more popular across a wider section of America and will therefore probably still come out on top again.
Sadly, this has become a political issue. Conservatives hate Dave because he's a liberal who took aim at Sarah Palin. However, at the end of the day, Dave (and Conan) are far more intelligent, smart and quick witted than Leno could ever be. Leno's just afraid to take chances or push any buttons so he plays it safe so everyone will like him. It makes him look like a dull baby.
And just so all you Leno lovers know, JAY'S A LIBERAL who HATES YOU GUYS AND EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR. It's just sad that some people aren't intelligent to pick up on that.
I think people are just tuning in to see what the new Jay Leno Tonight Show is like. eventually, they'll remember that Leno isn't funny and they'll start watching something else.
Leno's ratings are nearly twice Letterman's, so they won't fall far enough to put Dave on top anytime soon. Conan is now best known for sinking two shows at NBC..LN, and TTS. Is Fox ,ABC, or anyone else, really going to give Coco the chance to sink their top shows? I doubt it. Conan's LN fans failing to tune in to his TTS broadcasts are what sunk him....that, and the fact that he lacked the talent to win new fans.
Leno fans put their viewing, and spending, where their mouths are. Conan fans did not. Conan fans blog endlessly on FB, Twitter, etc, about how they love him...but they won't bother to change time slots to see him. When Conan left LN, to take TTS, his LN fans started watching Colbert. As such, Conan: lost his LN fans to Colbert, lost the Leno fans to whatever they watched after The Jay Leno Show, and failed to win new fans from among other people. Conan just wasn't as popular as he had thought he was. Now Fox/etc are less fond of him, too.
Conan's ego caused him to ruin the LN success he had, by urging him to grab for the brass ring of TTS; which he wasn't yet qualified to hold. His fans did not support him, Leno's fans did not support him, and no one else supported him...so Conan ruined TTS, too. It takes a special kind of non-talent to ruin two good shows in just 7 months. David Caruso quit NYPD Blue-without ruining it, or any other shows-and he was blackballed for 8 years afterwards before being given another chance with CSI Miami. Conan ruined two shows in his departure, so he will most likely be blackballed for a lot longer than Caruso was. I think we have seen the last of Conan O'Brien...for the rest of this decade, at least....unless he pays somewone to take him on.
Jay Leno is always trying to get the laughs even if he means he has to overshadows his guests. Even when he has animals on the show he is constantly trying to ruff the fur a little too hard on the lion cub so he can get the big laughs. I think he needs to focus on his guests a little bit more & not be such a show-off. He is a jackass.
CooCoo would make a better politician than a comedian.
Jay just doesn't have it anymore. I've been watching him since I was a little kid, and he was funny for a long time. The thing is people move forward, and that was the plan until Jay (and NBC) screwed it up. Our comedy tastes grow and develop and Conan was ushering in the new era. Jay will probably continue to rule late night for awhile, but soon Late night will disappear as my generation and the ones that follow won't and to a certain extent already don't watch television. Other internet and multimedia mediums will take control.
how refreshing...replacing faux-gay hissy-fit humour with blue-collar, below-the-belt, junior-high school humour. oh, for a jack parr moment or even a johnny c. magical moment. . .
Howard Stern described Leno well. Leno is a lapdog, who will steal material from anyone.
I tried to be fair, and watched Letterman for several weeks. sadly I never found him humorous, I don't think he made me laugh once. He is repetative with to much hand motions ans drives a joke into the ground. Sorry Dave, Go Leno..
i hate these people. 0 talent, class, sophistication, humor, etc.
idk how many times i've said this, but he needs to find a harmless hobby such as cliffdiving or alligator wrestling.
The bottom line was this. NBC screwed up last year. If it's not broken then don't fix it so to say. Leno is funny and Conen is not. Leno is funny and Letterman is not. Jay will come out on top again.
I completely agree w/ EJ. Leno was great as "The Tonight Show" host. I knew when the announcement was made that Conan would not survive with the audience that normally watches. He's just not cut out for the mid-stream, middle-age audience. He appeals to a much younger crowd who thinks for whatever reason a puppet throwing up is somehow funny over, and over, and over......
Jay is back where he belongs. And for those of you who continue to blame Jay for what has occurred....he doesn't OWN the show or the network. Seriously, get your heads out of your a**es and use your brain. It's not that difficult to figure out. It comes down to $$ people.
Jay will probably settle in right around 5M. He lost some audience with his 10p show, but probably not many. Dave's audience stuck with him through all of Jay's/Conan's debacle, and will continue to be steady.
Remember that audience size doesn't mean quality. Brittany probably sold more records in the last decade than anyone else, but I doubt anyone would refer to her as a talented musician or singer (talented "performer" or "celebrity" – sure). Brittany's fans will always buy her latest album and listen to her recycled pablum. Jay's audience will tune in to his "aww shucks, isn't he cute" schtick. I'll take Dave any day.
Leno is as funny as a bingo competition for senior citizens.
I tried watching Leno but he's unwatchable. The whole show gives me the willies. He tries too hard, the audience laughs at everything he says, it's like a twilght zone episode of a place where everything is funny for no reason. I don't get why anyone would watch his show. Nobody I know watches it. His viewers must be made up of seniors and people with low IQ. That's his demographic.
I am in the 30 some crowd and do not find either Letterman or Leno very appealing at all. However, I do like Jimmy Fallon. He is geniune and super funny too. He has my vote..if we had one!!
Here's a fun fact. If you of course, like Jay Leno (which I have no problem with!). Harvey Korman of the Carol Burnett Show Fame is credited for discovering Jay Leno. Harvey used to live next door back in the late 70's to Johnny Carson. He took Johnny to see Andy Kaufman at an LA comedy club. Johnny didn't like Kaufman, but Harvey said stay, I want you to see and meet Jay Leno. So, Harvey is credited for discovering Leno and introducing him to Johnny which led to the hosting and re-hosting (pre-owned hosting) of the Tonight Show. Rest is peace, Harvey. You're always missed. FYI: as Harvey's cousin I know this story to be true first hand from Harvey.
Jay goes three for three...
Who watches the tonight show? Its so boring. I would be interested to find out what the ratings were for non network late night shows. How does the daily show compare to the tonight show, i watch that an infinite times more than any of the late night shows, they just arent funny in my opinion
Leno used to be a middle of the road stand up, but I can't stand the lame puns he makes every nite or the guests with fake dumb answers. The only way he can make it up to me is to drive one of his overpriced jalopies off a cliff on the air. As for Letterman, he hasn't been funny sine the 80's and I'm hoping he has a heart attack and dies on air–that would be funny.
What a none story...wait six months and then we can talk.
Leno is back – yea!! I liked Conan too, but Leno a little more. I never got into Dave – don't know why-it just didn't click. For all those calling Leno a creep and worse – he also has employees that need jobs. He was pushed out by NBC because they were afraid to lose Conan, but then decided they were more afraid to lose Leno and then NBC stuck it to them both. I am glad Leno is back and am confident that whatever Conan does, he will be great. BTW, Ferguson is very funny and worth staying up for. I just wish these shows did better in Prime Time – I love 'em.
Leno is a thief. He stills skits and bits from people and doesn't give credit. He's a lap dog with no integrity. He get's fired from NBC because he's older so they can bring someone fresh. He STAYS with NBC because he claims he still had 7 months left on his contract and couldn't go anywhere to do another show. NBC offers him a show at 10pm because THEY know he will go elsewhere and do well. Leno takes the show becasue he's NBC's dog. Get's FIRED AGAIN by NBC then takes ANOTHER job with NBC. Question: if you've been fired or pushed out by a company, wouldn't you move on to another job? Leno really is a no talent talk show host. Nothing makes me want to watch him. Many people who watch Leno are used to the "Tonight Show" brand and in case many of you forgot, when Leno took over for Carson, Leno's ratings were dismal.
The only person I hate more than Jay Leno is Jeff wilpon
if Conan comes on in the Fall he will hurt Letterman more than he will hurt Leno. Just my humble opinion. Leno has an audience out there that doesn't like Letterman and doesn't get Conan's humor interesting though it is. Time will tell.
I am not surprised about Leno's successful return His competition is a doofus creep. Letterman has no class and is hard to stomach. Also why the clamor over 5-6 million viewers. We are afterall a country of 300 million. 5-6 million is chump change.
Good to see a news program like Nightline is doing well, even though in third place.
I think Santiago is right....In the long run Conan will come out on top but after the group who follows him become more consistent in their viewing. This demographic is online more than Watching TV. I think this was in the best intrest for everyone to have Leno back at 11:30. The sponsors are going to flock back and NBC will be right back to where they were a year ago. Peoples memories fade and do what they want in the end.
Jay Leno is the most "genuine" phony I have ever seen. Does anyone else out there know what I'm driving at?
How about this? He's "faux-intimate" while arm's length.
Whatever it is...it drives me crazy. I doubt he has a friend in the world. Loads and loads of associates and acquaintances but NO friends.
Really, c'mon, I know nobody that thinks Leno is funny. He is polished as a host and a good interviwer but he is not a funny comedian.
I will never understand how Leno beats Letterman in the ratings. And who cares if he "appeals to the masses." Hell, the masses have no taste. The masses must be the dullest people in the world. And Craig Ferguson rocks! I love that guy.
I would rather they run old movies then have either Leno or Letterman, etal on. The shows are boring, the guests barely have enough time to talk & the monologs are flat & dull. Late night TV has really gone down hill. With all the choices on cable I give Leno maybe a year I along with a lot of others lost respect for him. He should have just gracefully retired from NBC.
I have never been a Letterman fan, I think he's an ass. I really didn't care one way or the other about Jay or Conan. However I was shocked that Jay left the Late Show and then when it didn't work out he wanted it back. For that I lost any respect I had for him and I will never tune into his show again, no matter who is going to be on his couch. Total lack of class Jay. Move on......
all reasonable points...the salient one is that Jay really had litte to do with Conan getting bounced...it's a business and NBC took the risk of replacing what was a number one show with an unknown (at that hour)...it of course blew up in their face...they are the bad guy in this...not Jay...Jay was a good company guy and against his better judgement went to 10:00 to appease NBC...he thought is was a bad idea and it turned out to be a bad idea...it is beyond me that heads at NBC (Zucker) haven't rolled...
I'm not surprised that Leno is doing better on "The Tonight Show"–it's a format he's VERY familiar with, and as such he could comfortably return to after the fiasco that was "The Jay Leno Show."
Also, Leno has _tremendous_ popularity in "flyover country," and that is why viewership is much higher, too.
finally there is something to watch on TV at 11:30
I am so glad that Jay is back! He's far, far better than Conan and (ugh)Dave!
Thank goodness for FIOS TV and countless other channels to watch. Leno's garbage doesn't exist in my world. No do any of the other late night shows actually. I'm amused that this is seemingly so important to so many people. It's TV, and it's trying to sell you crap, not entertain you. It's all petty.
I like Jay. Letterman is a bore. Just recently started watching Jimmy Fallon and I love his show.
Very glad Leno is back at 11:30. I hated Conan, couldn't stand to look at the hair! David Letterman is an arrogent SOB and not funny.
My favorite late night guy is actually Jimmy Fallon.
It bothers me when people conflate "better" and "more popular". Clearly Leno has proven to be more popular than both Conan and Dave, but that doesn't mean he's better. That's like saying a Chevy is better than a Ford because GM sold more cars last year.
It really was painful watching The Tonite Show with Conan O'brien for 7 months. He seemed to be doing everything he could to kill time.
All the rediculous banter with Andy was really annoying.
I can't see FOX spending a ton of money to hire someone who has proven he can't get the viewers. I found his Late Night show pretty good but he sucked at The Tonite Show.
Now he's blaming Leno for everything.
Glad to see the last of Co-Co The Spinning Clown and Boring Andy.
Welcome back Jay!
Leno is not funny. I don't know who could possibly think he is. Now, is The Tonight Show occassionally humorous? Yes. Poorly worded text from newspapers and ads are funny. Very dumb people answering questions on the street are funny. Jay Leno is not. That's all he's got going for him. I think the people who didn't find Conan funny aren't really thinking about whether or not Leno was funny, either, or just his show. His monologue certainly isn't.
I'd be curious to see if a major part of Leno's numbers are only in the first 15 minutes, then those still awake either change channels or turn the set off.
5.4 million out of 300+million people in America like Jay Leno. Do we need any more chest pumping from the statistically insignificant?
it amazes me people watch Jay. It amazes me anyone CAN watch Jay. He's one of the worst hosts, and unfunny comedians that has ever graced television.
It's so sad too...he used to be so funny.
i will be surprised if his ratings stay high. he had high-powered guests this week.
Some of you wonder who is watching Jay? The people who DIDN'T WATCH CONAN! Jay is for grownups – Conan appeals to the young – his locker room humor is funny to them – not to the people who made Jay number 1 for years and years and will make him (stay) number one again. Conan should never have taken over the Tonight Show. NBC should never have promised the Tonight Show to him to make him stay with NBC. Most of us could see the train wreck coming before it ever happened.
I have yet to meet a single person who enjoys Leno's show, yet he dominates the ratings. Must be everyone in the flyover states who lack a sense of humor
Letterman is better than Leno, but better than all of them...who never gets mentioned...is Chelsea Handler. This woman does circles around these boys.
Leno has proven beyond any doubt that he's a jerk.
i've always liked Leno. that said, i've grown tired of him as most people have; while Letterman and O'Brien have ventured into new territories with their shows, Leno continues to do the same old tired bits simply because they've worked in the past. this is why his 10:00pm show was doing so poorly in the ratings. television is one of the few places where the term "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" does not apply. Leno offers nothing new, and his ratings are good now only becasue he's regained his old time slot. he hasn't been nearly as funny as he was in his prime for several years now, and the ratings spike will be short lived. Jay needs to grow a pair and bring something new to the table, especially since he's received flak for the whole situation with NBC pushing O'Brien out to put Leno back in.
I have no doubt that Jay and Conan respect and admire each other; they're both great comedians and late night hosts, but you can only captivate the same crowd with the same old material for so long...
I don't understand what idiots find Leno funny. He bores me to tears. He just needs to go away with his corny humor. Dave is cool, Conan was cool too. Fallon is another one I don't understand how he is funny. I mean really, how is he funny?
Jay sucks, why is this a discussion? Daily Show/ Colbert is way better and when they're on repeats, HELLO DAVE! The Bill Murray interview on Monday was fantastic, but not many know because they were watching Leno? That makes no sense. These are probably the same people that are enjoying The Marriage Ref.
Whatever... 5.7 million viewers were able to get better sleep this week. They could simply watch Leno's show instead of counting sheep.
Eventually everything is going to be on demand and you can watch content whenever you like. Leno's audienceis simply the people that are left in the US that don't have DVR yet... or ignorant on how to use a DVR...
Really America?! Jay Leno?! I've had funnier bowel movements. Everything from his writing to his delivery is sub-par. And why does he do the post-punchline, "You see, it's funny 'cause...?" (Jay, if you have to tell me why it is funny, it is not funny.) Then repeat the punchline and bobble his head. And don't get me started on his interview style, which is to ask an uninteresting question only to interrupt the uninteresting answer with another stupid question. Mind-numbing. Boring. Carson must be spinning like a lathe!
As I recall, Jay was behind in ratings to DL until his famous interview w/ Hugh and his "hooker excapade" , only then did he pass DL in ratings. How long did that take? Was it the 5 months they gave to Conan, or longer, and Jay didn't have to follow his show then or now behind the lowest rating shows on air (namly his own 10:00 show)
I will watch for the ratings to drop, but I won't be watching Jay
Those numbers will slowly trail off though. Alot of people are just watching for the hype created by this fiasco in the first place. I've never really cared for Dave, and I'm not surprised that Leno is doing better. However, Conan's return to late night, wherever that might be, will be the real test for Jay. They have never actually had competing time slots. I'll put my money on Coco.
I watched the "new" Leno Monday night and after 2 minutes of Jaime Foxx going nuts, I changed the channel and decided that will be the end of Leno. I can't believe NBC thought this was the right move to make
I will never watch Leno again, I miss Conan. I hope when Conan comes back in several months he will crush Leno
The amount of animosity toward Leno on here is kind of scary. Are that few of you actually well-adjusted or do you just have no business sense? Leno at 11:30 provided strong ratings, constantly beating Letterman. Conan's ratings at 11:30 were awful, Leno's at 10pm were awful as well. So, here's NBC's options...ditch Leno, and let Conan continue to bomb at 11:30 while Leno likely went to another network and likely beat both Conan and Dave. Or, ditch Conan and let Leno go back to the spot where he got them the best ratings, which is 11:30. I don't believe Leno demanded 11:30 back, and even if he did, he wouldn't have gotten it if NBC hadn't known he could get them better ratings than Conan, and so far he has proven them right. I doubt that will change once Conan's mediocre comedy comes back in September with another network. Leno will still be # 1, Letterman will be # 2, and Conan will be be # 3.
I think they're both good, Leno just happens to appeal a bit more to mainstream US, and Letterman is a bit edgier.People seem to act like one or the other should win some type of war, but lots of people watch both. There is room for both shows–depends on the mood you're in.
First, no one on this board knows Leno or Letterman personally, so takl about nice guy this, jerk that, no one really knows. As for the ratings, Leno has his following, granted, that following is getting older and older and older, but he'll likely hang on for a few more years, then he'll be gone along with his elderly audience.
I think people have finally come to see that Jay Leno really isn't funny and made millions from a show built by Johnny Carson.
well the nursing homes have to a something to sedate the residents and jay fits the bill !!!!! Like Howard said Jay steals everything from everybody too bad jonny is dead now that was a real entertainer !!!!
Well I've never really liked Leno. Sure he was funny a long time ago but now he just seems humorless to me, like he gave up being a comedian. In any case, Conan's fan base is younger people and those same younger people would continue to watch as they're the new generation. The older folks...well they'll eventually pass and it's today's younger generation that should be the focus. Besides, the rating system is a bit skewed anyway. Everything's done online and I've watched Conan's shows and skits countless times over the years. I bet online viewing wasn't really counted in the ratings calculation.
quoting Junaid "no surprise because he is actually talented .. unlike conan who rightfully got booted out but had the nerve to actually complain while still making millions".
I disagree. Sure Jay is talented, but what do you consider more of a talent. To be able to follow a structure script and make moderately funny jokes? or to be able to be spontaneously funny, and create smart and witty comedy? I'll chose the latter. Jay beat Conan on ratings mostly because of the population he attracts. Middle aged to older people who 1) find his type of comedy more appealing and 2) are more likely to diligently watch a show on a nightly basis. Conan's population tends to be much younger and, at least now, are less consistent about tuning in. In due time I think Conan will come on top. But for now, hope Jay continues doing good.
LENO CRUSHES ALL!!!!
Leno isn't even close to funny. People must just watch him so they can fall asleep easier. That or American's are just really really stupid.
Jay won't be able to keep up the pace of the big "get" guests he's been getting. The olympic push will ebb. NBC spent big time ensuring he would restart with a splash. NBC spent big time to make Conan move on. My guess is that in a year's time, NBC will still be in the hole economically on all this...but if Jay stays and does his middlin' thing for enough years they will do alright, financially. The late night audience is not very demanding...y'know?
Thank god for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
Never could stand him-I think he's arrogant and I don't think he's funny. I do miss Conan!!
I watch Letterman. Depending who's on Leno, I might tune in. He
was always ahead of Dave;I believe Jay will regain his audience and
numbers. There is room for all. Let Conan go to Fox. I enjoy Craig
Furguson. Jimmy Fallon is good also.
I refuse to watch anything on NBC other than SNL, Fallon, or sporting events.
Agree with earlier poster that Ferguson tops all.
I think we all forget, that Jay was asked by NBC to go to the 10:00 p.m. slot, because they, in their wisdom, wanted to keep Conan around. Jay went to 10:00 p.m. but would have preferred to stay at 11:35 p.m. Then when Conan didn't get the viewers, they asked Jay back. So none of this was Jay's fault, it was NBC's. I love Jay and I also love Dave, so I go back and forth between commercials. I think Conan is too silly sometimes. I love Jay's little skits when he goes to people's homes and they do some great "musical" or something else. Keep going Jay......and Dave.
First the naysayers said leno had no sot and his numbers would tank.
now that they've been proven wrong, it's a whole new song and dance "oh wait 'till the newness blah blah blah"
You cynics just need to accept that not everyone has time to waste to talk **** about people over the internet and stop the whining.
Leno is the funniest American since the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.
Leno is a much better late night host than either Letterman or O'Brien and the ratings are proving that. The latter are mean-spirited men at heart. Leno appeals to the masses. O'Brien is a whiney baby and Letterman is a pompous ass. Leno America's guy right after Johnny, of course.
I don't understand why people are so serious about this whole Leno vs. Letterman or Leno vs. Coco thing. All are funny in different ways. Also, if Leno had a power to kick Conan off the tonight show he would not be fired in the first place…
Leno never was any good...he was just well-marketed. He's shown the world what he really is...a back-stabbing, lantern-jawed egotist, who never was really very funny to begin with. He steals his ideas from others, but with the Peacock behind him, he gets away with it. Screw regular TV...give me Dave Attell on cable anyday!
Leno appeals to more people. Letterman has a biting personality. His little mess with his staff didn't endure me to watch him either. Leno is a way nicer person anyway.
Doesn't mean Leno still isn't a creep!
be selfish and cater to the lowest common and you too can get ahead.
I don't see how that logically follows since Leno beat Dave year after year after year. And what newsness? Leno hosted the Tonight Show for more than 17 years.
Leno is better than Letterman I'm glad he is back. I never watched Leno at 10:00 the time slot just did not work out with my schedule.
Jay's first week is far below Conan's first week. Way to go NBC.
still think Ferguson is the funniest guy on late night . . . Leno was funnier as a standup . . . so I guess he needs better writers or to do his own or just to settle in as host and not care about being funny . . .
Thank god he is back, Conan was not funny at all, it was painful watching him for several months.Keep up the good work Jay.
Thats a shame. I was hoping no one would watch this jerk when he came back.
Yeah Leno should continue to enjoy his temporary victory, but it wont last. Just give thanks to all the curious viewers who wanted to see how the first day would go, but will ultimately turn away after finding that the same old boring show is back.
Watched Dave last week. He was still recyling Bush jokes. At first I thought I was watching a rerun. Leno will continue to dominate.
No.........."The "newness" of Leno" will NOT wear off. Leno happens to be at his best in that time slot, and for me it was a comfortable feeling being able to tune in to the Tonight Show after the news, and this is the way it is for many, many viewers, which will once again put Leno at the #1 spot in late night viewing.
I don't know who it is that's watching Jay. His jokes are old and he's never funny. After what happened to Conan I hoped that people would send a message by not watching Jay. I refuse to watch him
Dream on. Leno was ahead before and he'll stay that way.
Jay will continue to improve as the premier late night host. Conan should have taken the deal, letting his ego put all of those people out of work then blaming Leno is weak. Letterman has a good number 2 spot. They are all wealthy men so we can all stop snickering and let them do what they do. "Make us laugh"
I say give it time. People will fall back into their routine. I never watch Leno, and I even tuned in for a little bit the other night to see what he had to say. I think im over Leno... again. Go Fallon! Careful if someone at NBC ever offers you to take over the "tonight show". It may be a trap...
Jimmy Fallon rocks! Yeah dude! And Jay Leno has the biggest chin EVER! DUDE THEY BOTH ROCK!
no surprise because he is actually talented .. unlike conan who rightfully got booted out but had the nerve to actually complain while still making millions.
I predict Leno's ratings will stabilize at where he left off last year, right around 5.3-5.4. If Conan starts a new show in the Fall we will then see how it goes for Leno, but for now Leno will continue to beat Lettermen in the ratings race like he did for 17 years previous to the last 10 months which we can blame on Conan.
I disagree. Leno owned Letterman for years in the ratings until he walked away and let Conan take over. That isn't going to change even with all the flak he got regarding Conan. People still love Jay and most are blaming the execs for the Conan stuff anyway. I am not sure who came up with 10 oclock show ideas but he is already 10 times better back at 11:30. The show just flows better and is much funnier. I think his ratings may level off from the first night but not drastically so he will be fine.
Leno's rating caontinue to fall (albeit slowly) but Dave's ratings are stable. Leno and Conan both started this way and they will be end below Dave. The "newness" of Leno is already starting to wear off.
