Controversy with 'Idol's' Top 24

testing captions
testing captions

We once again have a Lambert on “American Idol.”

The remaining top 24 were revealed on Wednesday night and Alex Lambert (apparently no relation to Adam) made it through along with Lacey Brown, Crystal Bowersox, Janell Wheeler, Katie Stevens, Michelle Delamore, Siobhan Magnus, Lilly Scott, John Park, Joe Munoz, Ashley Rodriguez, Haeley Vaughn, Paige Miles, Tyler Grady, Jermaine Sellers, and Andrew Garcia.

And since “Idol” wouldn’t be “Idol” without some controversy, contestant Chris Golightly, who made it into the Top 24, was replaced at the last minute by contestant Tim Urban (who I’m going to go out on a limb here and say is not related to Keith). According to a press release from Fox, it was determined that Golightly was ineligible to continue in the competition.

Fellow Hollywood week contender Samantha Musa tweeted that she had spoken to Golightly – who touched hearts with his back story of being in foster care – about his disqualification.

“He was disqualified yesterday, after already being told he was in the top 24, over some bogus old contract,” Musa tweeted on Wednesday. “The contract expired, but they disqualified him for not telling them.”

Fox hasn’t given any details as to why Golightly was tossed, and Musa questioned why he was let go instead of “Big Mike” Lynche - whose father reportedly broke the “Idol” confidentiality agreement by blabbing about his making it into the Top 24 - was not.

I question why Jermaine Sellers, who was a finalist on BET’s gospel singing competition “Sunday’s Best,” made it to the final 24 while Angela Martin did not.

It was Martin’s third try at snagging a slot. The first time she made it to Hollywood, her father was murdered. The second time she ended up in jail over traffic tickets. This last time I thought for sure we’d have the chance to vote for her and her amazing voice.

Her cut on Wednesday night was made all the sadder because of recent news that her mother has been missing for months.

Are you happy with the Top 24?

    ANGELA MARTIN!!!!! ANGELA MARTIN!!!!!!
Damn her name was written all over Top 10, Top 24 yet again AIdol failed the poor girl who delivered effortless vocals.
Even Simon in his own words said:

"It;s people like you, Singers like You why I like doing this show, B'cos You really Talented, you need a Break, and you just good'

Simon Cowell's word in Verbatim. So what Happened? Damn suckers failed her again. Cos she was really Good, Half of the girls there arent as good as she is. All through her auditions she was a constant 9 outta 10. I hope someone Independent finds her and shoots her to the star where she belongs.

It's unfortunate Angela Martin didn't make the top 24 this time. This is her 3rd try and I think she should have been chosen. Not because she has had and still is having tragedy in her life, but come on! She is very talented and I have to say sounds 100% better then a couple of those girls that were. It's a shame, but keep going Angela! Idol isn't the only place you can be discovered! You never know, somebody may have watched you and wants you on there lable!

Some of you people kill me. They asked a question people answer and those that post dumb crap like " Get a life" Who Cares and etc...should GET A LIFE!! For those saying AI "dodged a bullet or was avoiding a risk...she has other issues to deal with...." WAKE UP!! She's been handling it since it started...her Father was one of her biggest supporters....he would want her to continue!! Her mother was her life.....what else can she do??

She has to continue on and try to make her life and her daughters life better.....and the girl can sing!! even if she didn't make it past week 1 or 5...she got there and would of showed the world more of what she can do!!! So the next time something tragic happens in YOUR life....just sit there and do NOTHING..........

I don't think it is fair that they kept Big Mike when his dad broke confidentiality. Technically, he is at fault b/c he told his dad that he was in the top 24. I would want to tell my parents too, but know that I wouldn't have been able to tell my dad b/c he has a big mouth!

I agree with Todd's post. Why is it that they must have 12 males and 12 females? The top 24 should be the best 24, period.

Ok, now that my girl , Mary, the 28 year old rocker, was cut, I will NOT be watching Idol. Shame too. I love Ellen. Mary sounded like Pink, who is one of the best singers around. I knew Mary was not going to make it when I heard Simon say she was 28. As if that was old. Get a life Simon. Not everyone who buys records like the teeny boppers who sing with a nasal voice. We have plenty of them.

Idol discriminates due to age. This is well known and obvious just from seeing the names and ages of contestants
If a TV show discriminated against other groups they would be, at the least, sued.

Please boycott Idol and all advertisers buying time during this show.

Did most of you just fall off the boat? Of course this show has to do with more than just talent. First, if you have talent but you are an idot or crybaby that cannot take direction or work with the group, you are not making it. Most of the people that got voted out but can sing fall into that group. Second, America does not like ugly people. I know it is wrong to say it out loud and I will get bashed for syaing it but it is still true. Look at who wins almost every year, pretty people. Only once has an over weight or unattractive person won this. And he sold no records and was never heard from again. Yes, they want people who can sing, are pretty, and can be worked with. Because they have to sell records. It is a business. The show is not called who has the saddest story or who can really sing but are a total trainwreck with bad parents.

I think that Shelby Dressel should have made it. I decided after that I was no longer watching. I hate how they always vote off the best voices before we are given a chance to vote. Haeley Vaughn sucks. I mean at least Andrew Garcia is still in it. He is by far the best left.

When Kara sat down next too Ms. Martin. I was disgusted.
there nothing worse than someone getting the pity treatment.

perhaps the judges, need to be blindfolded, when they
listen to the singers, that way, they won't put so many
pretty singers through without the voice to back their looks.

Though Ms. Martin has been beaten down by life, i felt the judges used that fact against her. there was nothing wrong with her beautiful voice, she needed a chance, not the pity treatment they gave her.

i hope someone in the music industry, give her a chance.

I think Shelby Dressel will be brought back. That is why you saw Simon say her getting cut was a mistake. Shes cute and talented. I dont think Angela Martin was that good. Im sure there were hundreds among the thousands that tried out that had hard luck stories. I kind of like Tyler Grady but they only showed him sing once and no back story on him so he probably wont be around for long. Thank God that washed up bossy Mary chick didnt make it in. Anyway, Ellen is getting on my nerves already.. Kara is completely annoying.. The whole "take your shirt off" comment to Casey made me ill.. I wont watch after this season since Simon is leaving. He may come off mean sometimes, but at least he is honest and not phony like the rest.

You do realize that they have to be able to market the winner. If the winner cannot sell albums, they won't make the cut. Simple business decision when it gets down to it. You have to ask yourself: what will the average 12-17 year old female want to buy with Daddy's credit card....the entire free enterprise system revolves around that equation.

I'm tired of people saying they let a lot of talent go in picking the top 24. They started off with 10,000 people and got it down to 24 – of course they let a lot of talented people go! When they finally got to Hollywood week they had 171 talented singers. It must have been difficult especially when they narrowed it down to the two rooms of people in the end – that must have been about 48 people or so. They had to let 1/2 of the people go. There's no way they could ever pick a top 24 who would make everyone happy.
The top 24 this year is diverse and interesting and very talented. They are going to suprise and entertain us for the next 14 weeks. We will see them progress. It's all good. Sit back and don't take it too seriously! Enjoy the ride. And for god sakes, Vote!

Why do so many people leave comments saying "who cares" . Obviously you cared enough to click on the story to begin with. Do I care who wins AI? Nope. Do I care who gets cut and why? Not really. But I like to hear the news. I like to know what is going on in our world, whether it's the latest on American Idol or how many soldiers were killed fighting for our freedom today. If you don't want to know about it, don't read it and for pete's sake, don't comment about it if it's so "below" you.

@Tyler....Yes because if we constantly concern ourselves with the problems of the world with no way to relax and unwind, then what kind of humans would we be?? Really??

This is ENTERTAINMENT news...people need to be entertained to have some sort of escape from the hardships you believe that everyone should be constantly focused upon.

Although I do find it ironic that you believe people are wasting their time with Idol, when you are talking about them wasting time while posting on internet forums...wouldn't you see that as a waste of time too?? Hmmmmm

How can we comment about the top 24 when the Idol producers only let us hear the singers for a few seconds. On the Tuesday show, out of 47 minutes on the air, only 8 minutes were actual singing. The rest was crying, cheering, and stories about their tearful little lives. How about letting us see the talent during this talent show?

    @news, @Chris, @alltherestofyoustrangepeople....

WHY ARE YOU READING THIS ARTICLE?? STOP READING IF YOU DON'T LIKE AMERICAN IDOL!

Making smart comments like this isn't news, you don't care about american idol, american idol is a sham, this is lame... UM... why did you decide to click on the link and read this? Because maybe, just maybe you are actually interested in this but then have to put on a front of being too smart, too cool and therefore have to put it down. I really really cannot think of any other reason why you might read this article and leave such a comment. It's fine to not support American Idol or think it's lame...but why read about it and then criticize CNN and the show?? haha .. I just don't get it..

There's always going to be drama. There's always going to be somebody with talent that will not make the cut. I think if we didn't know Angela Martin's story.. our hearts wouldn't feel so disappointed. However, we have to learn to put that aside because there's nothing we can really do about it. Truth is, we have no power in the top 24 but at least from this point on, we can vote!

There's new talent this year which is excited. Different textures and flavors of vocal powers. Unfortunately, I think this is a pop idol kind of show and so in the end, I have a feeling the likes of Lilly Scott will not survive. America will gear towards what we all know and is not ready for too many exotic flavors i.e. Adam Lambert. Who by the way did not need the title as he was and is more successful than Kris Allen.

Two of the best singers (a crooner who made the mistake of using a keyboard instead of going acapella for the second show, and a really talented 16 year-old girl) were cut early on. I'm not impressed with most of the ones who're left. My family insisted that I try watching the show this season. After last night, I'll just tune back in at the end to see who wins. It was unfortunate that Tori Kelly did not have the chance to continue. She's from Canyon Lake California, and there are many who think she would have become that tiny resort town's most famous resident. (Which is saying quite a bit, because Kiefer Sutherland has owned a couple homes there). She's only, I think, about 17 years old, but many who have witnessed what she can do are of the opinion that her talent is skyrocketing in a major way. Oh well, if a big studio hasn't already signed her by Idol time next year, maybe she'll try again.

Ages: I think the producers should re-think the age restrictions and break it into three segments (or even other programs), which would be a LOT more fun. One segment – ages three to 12; next segment for ages 13 to 19; then the other segment for ages 20 and up—don’t put an age limit on this segment. Now THAT would make an interesting show.

Shots: If you try out for the show once, that’s it; no more chances. It gets old seeing the same people trying over and over again. It’s a lot more fun to see all new faces.

Group singing: Please, please, please never again—this is THE most boring portion of American Idol and always ends up eliminating some of the better singers for some reason. Boring, boring, boring….

Background: PLEASE stop showing their sad stories over and over and over again. I’m interested in whether or not they can sing and I’m excited about their future; I do not want their past to play ANY part of why they are chosen.

Judges: Why not get a former American Idol winner as one of the judges? They sure as heck know about music and REALLY know what these people are going through.

You need to realize the judges are looking at the whole package and that includes looks, singing and being able to market that person to the fullest; so it's not just about being able to sing well. The bottom line is likeability and that encompasses all of the above.

I agree with another person who said this is not the top 24, it is the top 12 girls and the top 12 guys. I hate to think that people who had more talent and ability than others got the boot because of their gender. Originally Idol did not separate the finalists into top guys and top girls. They started doing after the year they had mostly male singers and few females (I could have that backwards, it was a while ago). It should be the top 24 singers period and nothing to do with whether they are male or female.

It's called "American Idol"; not "American Talent" or "The American Singer". The top 24 will always be comprised of people with talent mixed with those that appear to have the total "package". The most talented will not always win but at least they get the boost of exposure for their careers.

Idol has been going down hill fast in the past few years. I didn't even watch the finale last year at all, but thought I would watch the opening auditions to see if anyone would stick out. I found one person, maybe two.

It mostly was recaps of the same old sob stories again and again of previously aired bits of the contestents. Hollywood week was a bust.

Finally the only person I thought deserved to not only continue, but head on to winning it was Charity Vance. She was suprisingly axed on Wed night and thus making the rest of the season pointless to watch.

Oh well I get to save my Tues, Wed and Thrus nights now for something else as none of these contestents do it for me in anyway.

The show will tank this season. Ellen looks like a fish out of water, Simon looks bored, Kara is imitating Paula, and Ryan is too seasoned to be waiting for the contestants to come out with their results. He stands 5 feet away and looks somewhat embarassed to be standing there.

The show should have had it's last run last season.

Angela Martin and the girl with the paralyzed face deserved to go through, but unfortunately the producers have a chosen 12 in mind and needed to fill the ranks with fodder that nobody would vote for, hence why Paige Miles, Joe Munoz, and others got in while deserving singers like Angela did not. This might also be why they didn't let Thaddeus in despite his singing chops (or maybe they didn't want to deal with his mother?).

It is pretty sad that the producers use factors OTHER than singing ability when determining the top 24.

It's rumored that Simon wants Angela back for X-Factor though, so not all is lost.

This show has lost any of it's influence – thankfully. Other than Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood this show continues to churn out mediocre performers who's talent is reflected in their album sales. I cannot understand a singing competition consisting of a panel of Judges who couldn't carry a tune themselves including Paula Abdul.

Idol MUST do the 12 and 12 thing to avoid discrimination charges! Believe me, if they put thru 24 guys or 24 girls; or even 20 guys and 4 girls; someone would be running to thier closest attorney filing discrimination charges against the show and FOX. AI is simply covering thier butts.

The show is not even close to what it used to be. I watched a lot of extremely talented people go home last night and a lot of less talented people get to stay. It made me sick. When they got rid of Shelby Dressel and I heard Simon say that they made the wrong decision by cutting her – I knew it had to be downhill from there. But, the judges must have had their reasons for keeping the ones that they did, even though the rest of us may not ever understand. Hopefully it will be a relatively good season, for it will certainly be my last.

The bad thing about it is the best singers weren't picked as least 3 of the guys and 4 girls that needed to be in the top 24 were screwed over as usual by Idol.. Its seems to be more about the parent scene and country singers this year. Or those whom can play a mean instrument.. But Angela and T (can't spell is name) last black boy who was 16 was denied the chance to make it..

I'm glad Angela Martin is gone. I didn't like her, I didn't think she was all that talented, I didn't like her story, I don't see what the big fuss is.

So she made it Hollywood twice before, but through personal probelms she had to withdraw...ok, her dad was murdered...it's a big deal, I'll give her a pass. But then to be given a second chance only to have to go to jail. Yes jail, not court as I have been seeing everybody posted...she said jail last night, 6 days in jail. Her own fault, pay your fine, work something out. I am not going to cry for a girl who missed her opportunity because she was in jail.

Besides that, do you really think she was worth the risk for the show. She has already shown twice before that she's unreliable for hollywood week, why be put in a situation where you have to rely on her to be there for up to 3 months? With her mother missing and a disabled daughter, she has distractions that could tear her away from the show again. Taking that risk is bad for the show, and it's apparent that they only care about the show itself...just look at Aaron Kelly, there is no way he earned his spot, he forgot the lyrics in 2 out of 3 performances in hollywood week, but he's 17, has a baby face, and appeals to the teeny bopper audiance....which means that this ticket to the top 24 is basically a bye into the final 4.

I was appalled that Angela Martin did not make it in this season! I know the judges see more than the viewer, but if this is a singing competition first, I think she should have made it. I don't want her to make it because of her "story" or her downfalls, I believed she would make it because from what I could see she HAS "IT." Maybe a top 26 should be considered, instead of 24. There were about 6 for certain contestants I knew would make it this year, and they did... except one. Very disappointing!
On a side note, I know AI is always going for star power, but maybe there should be judging tryouts for the guest judging during initial auditions. An interesting concept. Some of the public know a lot about music, because they listen and live it.
Cheers to Ellen... great addition to the show!

I'm pretty OK with the top 24. I do think Martin should have made it. Though there is a possibility she didn't make it because she's made it 2 years running and has had to back out. They may not want to make that investment. But she was certainly one of the most talented female singers and based on that she should have made it.

I find it interesting that people pick on the judges. Actually having non-musical judges is more valid than having a bunch of industry types. After all its normal people like you and me who will ultimately decide whether the singers are good and they are successful. I don't have any musical background but I know what I like.

Finally, the personal stories do matter. Just look around you. There's ton of news stories, magazines, tv shows devoted to personal lives of entertainers. Obviously it matters or people couldn't make money off of them. So choosing someone that has a background AND can sing...its good business and good tv.

Let's face it: There basically isn't any good music being made anymore, and the people who become "stars" today don't even remotely come close to people from past decades who could really sing. I'm talking about people like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Carmen MacRae, Frank Sinatra, Eydie Gorme...and many more. Barbra Streisand and Michael Buble are two of only a very few singers today who can actually sing.

Most of these people on AI are jokes. Some of them "might" sound okay if they had decent songs to sing, but certainly not the crap they either choose or are forced to perform. "Bubbly"?? Indeed.

Not everyone can make the top 24, but Angela Martin should have. I know they shouldn't judge on back stories, but back stories coupled with talent are the reasons people watch and call in. Angela has a wonderful voice and I wanted to see her go all the way. I would have spent the extra time calling in for her because she needs some sunshine in her life. American Idol is good, but I think they should make this year the last year. Ellen is funny, but not a good judge of talent or music, and without Simon what's the point. I have yet to figure out why they think it is fair to pick 12 females, and 12 males. No wonder they don't really get the best. So often, including this year, some are left out to fill the quota of 12 by 12. What is the point of this? They should just pick the best, and forget the gender "equality", which is so unfair to so many contestants. Angela Martin has a lovely voice, and several of the female singers chosen for the top 24, are not as talented. This show is very unfair, and the only reason I watch is that it's so much fun to see what Simon has to say, or even his visual reactions. I assume we only see what they want us to see on TV. Cutting someone who appears to be great on a 5 second sound bite stirs up some controversy and ratings. The people who were cut either had issues with their range or they weren't unique enough. Lots of people can sing, but having a sad story doesn't mean you have any chance at becoming a star. Something is not right with American Idol!! How do you have one 16 year old who forgot the words and messed up a lot but made it to top 12, but you have another 16 year old who was constantly praised and commended and told that he did nothing wrong, but he didn't make it. This world that we live in!

Do I like the top 24? Yes, from what I saw of them. Which was not very much due to all the other nonesense they aired.

Pretty decent pick of 24. We don't see alot so it's hard to tell how much better one is than the other. We all have our favorites. The girl with the harmonica is great and I'm glad to see she made it.

Angela Martin was good; not great. Actually she was not anymore impressive than several of the ladies. At this stage she simply did not stand out over the others. As for 12 guys / 12 girls, this must be done to prevent folks from screaming Idol is discriminating! Imagine what would happen if they put thru 24 guys or 24 girls, someone would be screaming AI discriminated because Im a (put sex/race/whatever here) and they only put thru the other (put sex/race/whatever here)! From here forward it's up to the votes..which takes it out of AI's hands.

AND they do have One blonde, one black, one power vocalist, one country, 3 cuties. AND now we get to vote...one blogger should now be happy!

The Judges blew this one. Janell Wheeler is awful and never should have been put through. Angela should have been put through but wasn't. The men were weak this year. I agree with other posting here that the 12/12 even split is a bad idea because there were many girls who beat the guys out without even trying.

The overall talent this year is much weaker this year than previous years and I am not too enthused about watching the rest of the season.

Its all about the hype, I do agree with some of the pics, but clearly the race and back story of contestants is part of the decision. You keep hearing this is a singing competition. which is what i believe it should be. I do want to know peoples story but in the end it has to be only about the ability to sing. I would like to see a spin off of the top people from each level given a chance to have smaller contracts. like a looser bracket competition. I am certain some of the supposed losers would blow the socks off of some of the supposed top 24.

Is it a talent contest? No it isn't. It is a "search for a pop singer" contest. They are looking for someone who can sell CDs, sell concert tickets, and get people to watch this pathetic shows. The person does not have to be the best singer. The person DOES have to be nice looking, nice dressing, sympathetic, and polite (or maybe a popstar "bad boy/girl"), and basically a crowd pleaser. Whatever it takes to do that is who goes to the top. Good singing is just one part.

Like any other reality show looking for ratings, Idol is a combination of talent and casting. If they were just looking to put the best singers in the top 24, it would be one thing. But Idol has certain roles they want to fill each season and doing that means not always picking the best talent. They want contestants who represent every socioeconomic and geographic demographic, and different genres to keep things interesting. The redeeming thing about Idol is that they often do end up with really talented performers. They don't usually win (exceptions Carrie and Kelly), but they get what they need nonetheless. Perfect examples: Kelly Pickler, Chris Daughtry, and of course, Adam Lambert. It's far from perfect, but it is what it is and it's still entertaining to watch (most of the time).

I think the show is called "American IDOL", just because someone has been down on their luck and going through some tough times in life doesn't qualify her to be an 'Idol'. We are looking for talent, not someone to feel sorry for just because unfortunate tragidy struck during her audition. Sorry for being cold-hearted but I'm voting for talent. I have watched Idol for years but the tone and whole program has been a turn-off this season so I have skipped all but one night. Once I heard Angela Martin was off I knew I wouldn't be tuning in the rest of this season. The spark is gone. It seems to be in the twilight of its life . . . Randy doesn't have the same charisma, Kara is kind but not the great vibes she had with Paula, Simon is Simon and we know he is sort of a lame duck as he is departing after this season and Ellen just doesn't fit well into the group. The three other judges all have a lot of music background. Ellen was the wrong choice for this program. Idol had a good run but the changes and pending changes in personnel did it in.

None of the 24, except for Andrew Garcia really prove anything. I'm not sure what made them change the set up and process. As for Kara, when is she going to stop whining and shrugging like it really pains her. Ellen is OK, adds a little spark, but I think the whole IDOL thing will collapse without Cowell. I have watched the show since 1st year. I agree with many that Angela Martin should have made top 24. What they did to Angela Martin was outrageous....downright mean and unjustified. The poor girl has had so much hardship and she's more talented than half the people who got through. I think this will be the last year for Idol...it's not real anymore – as a matter of fact I don't think it has been since Kelly Clarkson won. I like to believe that the judges are trying to provide us with a cross-section of singers– a little bit of every flavor for us to sample. However, I have to admit a little confusion as to why Haeley Vaughn was put through and not Angela, or in my opinion the greater tragedy, Shelby. That girl has it all: talent, beauty, and heart-breaking backstory. Even heartless 'ol Cowell said it was a mistake to let her go! Also disagreed very much with putting Alex through and not Thaddieus; I did comment to my husband that the judges were probably trying to appeal to the Archuletta mob. I'll be watching Bowersox (does need her teeth whitened) and Casey Smith.

My only guess is that they found out something in Angela's past that was going to be a problem for her. As her backstory indicates, she lived with a rough crew.

Based upon her singing she should have made it.

The saddest part was the look of shock (not disappointment, but SHOCK) that she didn't make it. They also cut that HOT Latin girl who had an amazing voice.

I guess the thing that amazes me most is all of the BEAUTIFUL w/ great voices that were cut and all the FUGLIES with bad voices or just average that made it.

I am rooting for Andrew Garcia. That fella has a lot under his sleeve and he's very engaging with his "Spanish" vibe which he puts towards every song he sings. I think America is ready for that right now and he certainly can bring that to the show. Everyone else just seems "so so." Andrew stands out and I think he has a lasting energy that is fresh and genuine.

I am very upset that Angela did not make it. How can you tell someone she was one of the best singers and then turn around and say she did not make it to the top 24 and "keep trying"! She has tried, over and over and each time her heart is broken. I have been a fan of the show each season, but Wednesday's episode is the last one I will be watching of this and any other seasons to come. I wish all the best to Angela and her family.

How screwed up can this man's priorities be? Someday he'll regret not being there. Apparently trying to grab 15 minutes of fame was more important to him.

I don't get it. EVERY SINGLE one of her performances was amazing. She is beautiful, has a great figure and an amazing voice. To me, she sounds like Beyonce.

So they tell her how amazing she is, how great she sounded and how much she grew then they CUT her? To make matters worse, they put that AWFUL black country singer girl through? When she sang her solo, Simon looked like he was going to throw up and my cat tried to commit suicide.

For me, she was clearly a top 10.

Who knows what evil machinations go into making these choices.

Angela Martin's father was murdered and her mother has been missing for months ? Somethin fishy goin on. I too liked her voice, and I usually don't care for a lot of the singers that are chosen (especially last year's winner -nothing great), but there must be a reason why she wasn't chosen other than her voice. Every year the best people are not picked to win because of the TEENY BOPPERS who phone in about 3,000 times each. Calls should be limited, but, the show loves announcing that 70 million people called in, when the actual number is about 4 or 5 million.

The show is about finding a STAR, not the best singer. If you don't have something unique about you, you're not going to make it in the industry anyway. I'm sure lots of them had better voices, but that doesn't mean they'll be more successful. And for those of you asking why judges who can't sing are judging....take a look at professional sports. I'm sure there's not a coach, manager or owner that can play better than anyone on his team, but that doesn't mean they don't have a good eye for talent.

I will say it's nice to hear about backgrounds but they should not be picked by who has the saddest story. SOme real talent was let go and some selected that weren"t as good. and this 12 boys n girls what if more than 12 girls was better than some of those 12 boys or vise versa they should be selected by singing talent only not clothes, looks, stories etc.

Lay off Kris Allen. He was a far more marketable singer than Adam Lambert. There is theatre and there is music. Lambert had too much theatre for mainstream musical audiences. Also, there have been too many "oh poor me stories" as reasons for them to get through. I like to hear the stories, but question the judges having that information. I've been a fan since the beginning and have consistently picked the winner or runner up 6 of the 8 seasons. Maybe Sony should give me a job.

This is my prediction – maybe not this year but NEXT year this show will be outta thar! It's been sliding downhill ever since Abdul left and now with Simon leaving there's just no show anymore. They have too many judges anyway. They have let go very talented people and kept others just for the shock value. When this show started it was very positive allowing young adults to showcase their talents but as usual the green machine has taken over – money.

I wish they had put through Angela Martin as well, but there was a lot of great talent this year. She should have made it though.

As far as Big Mike – it was his family that broke the rules – not him. Unfortunately Chris Golightly could have avoided the whole thing – they do ask you if you have had or do have a singing contract – so Chris himself broke the rules, much different than Big Mike.

Although I wish they would have brought back the 16 yr old black kid at the end rather than Tim. I feel that the 16 yr old would have brought much more to the stage.

The comments of many of you illustrate perfectly the reality that the show is not simply about singing ability. Angela Martin did not have near the talent that most of the others had in Hollywood, but many of you liked her anyway out of sympathy due to the background story played up by the producers. There were a couple that made it that I didn't think should have in my opinion and some that didn't make it that I liked, but believe or not...the judges know better than me what makes a great show for the masses. After so long, how can people still believe this show is anything but a ratings show? It's basic market testing on who will make Fox the most money. They pick a bunch of people to test the market with, see who you vote for, with the idea that who ever gets the most response will translate into $$$ for Fox. They are obviously still trying to hone the demographics as shown by how the perceived interest may be in one act, but once they leave the show, they switch gears and disappear, or "keep with the programmed persona" and may do well.

How exactly is this worthy of being on Cnn?

Big mistake in tossing out Angela back somehow. The singing has just plain gotten boring and the producers just don't get it. In once clip, Simon talks about how much he 'likes' the story of a contestant, and then the next segment someone describes how this is about 'the singing'. Make up your mind! The feeble attempts of the judges/producers/editors at taking decent singers and then making it about about the pseudo-drama of these people is a worn-out formula. I know there have been a few with 'real' back-stories but not many. I'm getting a little tired of the self-indulgent folks that just don't want to get a real job so, instead, want to be celebrities and turn to singing. Finally, we have someone like Angela show up with a great voice and truly interesting background that will show Americans what a real struggle is like ... and they toss her. I'm done. Time to give American Idol the boot.

It will be interesting to see how Haeley Vaughn withstands the various genres that Idol requires each week. She seems like an adorable kid; HOWEVER, her lisp is not endearing, it is a distraction, a BIG distraction. And yet, she made it into the finals and Angela Martin, a very good singer without a lisp, did not.

Idol truly isn't about finding the "best" singer – and you'll notice that they often will mention that fact – it is about finding a singer that can be bought by the public to be considered as an "idol."

Sorry but whoever said that votes don't count are wrong. Chris Daughtry or Katherine McPhee would have won if they had wanted it their way. But instead Taylor Hicks won. Simon, for one, would tell you he never wanted that to happen and neither did anyone associated with the show. He only won because viewers felt sorry for him and liked his dancing.

You all are idiots. They pick the people they think have the potential to sell records. They can do anything with computers to fix bad singing. They can even change the quality and tone of the voice. They just need a pretty face and a good personality they can sell. Your votes don't even matter in the end. Notice they never give the voting totals?

OMG - get over it folks. It's a singing contest. We're at war, the economy is sluggish, the Republicans are obstructing Congress doing their job for the good of the country, Haiti has been destroyed, people are starving all over the world, the planet's ecology is collapsing, and you're whining about a lame singing contest geared to sell acne products to self-absorbed 14 year olds? Are you serious? My god, wake up and take a whiff of reality. You people are really sad.

Let's be honest- we all know Idol isn't a true talent show. They have to pick those who have singing talent but the main priority is who will be the best and most interesting for the show. Looks, personality, behind the scenes life stories, star quality- all the things that make Idol actually interesting to watch- that's the criteria they use for choosing the 24. I feel as though Angela Martin fit into all of these categories- she should have been one of the 24. Who knows- she might be onto bigger and better things without Idol. At least I certainly hope so- she so deserves it.

Angela Martin's mother went missing after the auditions and the final 24 were selected. In light of that, it's probably a good thing that she wasn't selected as I'm sure she would have found it very difficult, if not impossible, to continue. However, I think that she has an amazing talent and I hope that she gets a break, both personally and professionally.

I think the judges and producers realize that Angela Martin is so talented that she doesn't need the show in order to be successful. Many of the other contestants need the experience and training the show offers. Also it is about talent but it's also about producing a show so they have to pick a broad range of people in order to appeal to everyone.

I'm trying so hard to NOT watch it this year, not after last year's endless promotion of Adam Lambert over anyone else. I've bought Kris Allen's CD and listen to it every day as well as owning Allison's. Lambert? Yeah, I know he's done some stuff, AMAs (that went well) and the song for 2012 but it's Kris Allen I'm hearing on the radio. AI needs to pick voices over types. One blonde, one black, one power vocalist, one country, 3 cuties. Pick the best then let us vote.

It seems as if Idol is more interested in "the look" than in natural talent. Why is it that there has to be 12 girls and 12 guys. It should be the top 24 most talented regardless of which sex you happen to be. I personally think AM should have moved forward as well as the 16 year old black kid. Both were very talented in my opinion. Well any way this is probably the beginining of the end for Idol anyway. Simon is leaving so were's the fun gonna' come from.

Both parents of a talented person like her can simply be dead early in the life of a child, because of the situation in the country today. These 3 individuals probably never lived in the same home! Both parents probably live right on the edge of the most dangerous area's of life! She is on a up hill slide and slipping into the pit of no return. All the poor child talk is not helping a thing. As for Golightly...not sure I remember who he is and seeing as we don't know all the details of what happened then I don't feel it should be commented on whether it's right or wrong. I do think we viewers should get a clearer understanding on the disqualification rules instead of just second hand hearing that someone got disqualified when someone else didn't.

I couldn't believe they cut Angela Martin. I also don't understand why there is so much importance about the background stories. During the auditions for Hollywood, some real talent was cut because they just didn't have interesting or heartbreaking back stories. This emphasis is dismissing some real talent and discrediting the show. Maybe Simon saw this coming and that's why he's leaving.

Based on the snipets of singing from each one, I think the top 24 is pretty good, at least most of my favorites are in there.
I do not take into account hardship but talent.
Last year, the top 24 had some awful singers namely the blonde but because she looked good, they kept her.
She and SanJia from previous season were the worst and they kept in the competition knocking out those more talented.
If they look good, doesn't mean they can sing.

There are plenty of talented persons and I'm pretty sure we'll be able to choose one out of that group that we think we'd like to see go on to record professionally. As for the ones that may have been eliminated unfairly, I do feel bad for them and the situations, but it's not helping anything to dwell on it. Yes, I am satisfied with the Top 24. Except, it was very harsh that Angela Martin was cut. I don't personally understand their reasoning on that? Anyway, Aaron Kelly is in the Top 24, and even though he forgot his lyrics on "In The Arms of an Angel" , I've heard him sing before (the competition), and he is incredible. If he calms his nerves down, he will do fantastic and definitely surprise everyone. So, I'm glad about him making it. Hopefully he will make his way into the Top 12. We'll see!! Vote Vote Vote people!

Why was Angela Martin not in the Top 24???!! They should have put her in there. I hope someone is waiting in the wings with a contract for her. Would love to see a Facebook fan page started on her behalf.

I lost interest in Idol when it quit being a talent contest and it became a popularity contest. If your liked by the 11 to 15 year old group you have it made, if you don't end of the road.
So for all you final 24, you know who you have to please, avoid all those old songs, sing to those 11 to 15 year olds and your the Idol!!!

Angela truly deserved to make it through to the top 24 and not just because of anyone feeling sympathy for her. She is so incredibly talented and I was just shocked that she didn't make it. Angela performed much better than many of the girls that made it through to the top 12. If anyone ever truly deserves a break, it's Angela. Shame on you Fox.

Idol wouldn't be Idol without a few well placed media blitz tidbits. I do think Angela should have been selected. I just wanted to point out that Jordin Sparks won the GMA vocalist of the year and got a contract with a Christian recording company and went on to win Idol. I can't believe that an expired contract would be overlooked by the Idol producers for Chris Golightly. We liked the back story on him. I guess Simon doesn't like orphans, Fuller not Cowell.

I have lost all respect for American Idol over the years. The judges have selected Top 24 contestants on personality and not talent. How do you mess up on your audition songs and still make it? How do you consistantly make it to the last round and not make it? American Idol has switched it's standards and I am sad to say that it is NOT for the best.

American Idol and it's counterparts elsewhere are a joke as far as quality of competition. As far as a mindless entertainment for the masses; well that's what they were designed for. When they pick one each from the 9 and 10th worst then 7 and 8th worst then.... so on you get the 9th or 10th WORST competing against the winner of the 1st and 2nd BEST and either the 3rd of 4th best looses out to that same 9th or 10th WORST.
    That's a joke.

The "......." Got Talent before the people can even vote the judges eliminate many of the best people because they want matches where one good one goes against one completely ridiculous. (Massive transvestite Belly Dancer who picks his Naval Cheese? Father Son Greek dancers who are absolutely horrid???!?!?..... yeah, it shocked the judges when they made it another level as they were chosen to FAIL)

    GET REAL PEOPLE.

One reason that Angela Martin was excluded over Jermain Sellers was probably because she is female, and he is male, and they have requirements of 12 of each gender.

I'm not an Idol fanatic, but all the talk of this being the toughest year yet is bunk. This is, from this casual observers perspective, the weakest group of talent to date. They may step up, but so this is not an overly impressive group.

Angela Martin should have been given another chance, they built it up like she was in the final 24. Now, Martin, 28, twice lost chances to advance on “Idol” in previous year, and is too old to compete next year after reaching the show's age limit.

Idol is just another unreal "reality show" that is manipulated to feed the Queen for a Day emotional dysfuntion that people seem to have.
It is not relevant and certainly is not real.

If people want to watch the show as entertainment for entertainments sake that is fine, but please do not give it the gravity of a controversy when some whiney adolescent doesn't get their way.

I would like to see a real talent competition where people are judged on their skills and treated in a respectful manner by the judges.(Hopefully judges that are qualified musically)

Simon is a rat, a rat deserting a sinking ship.

Isn't this a singing contest? What difference does it make whether or not these contestants have compelling personal stories? The idea is that they succeed on merit, talent and capability. It doesn't matter if any of them have sad stories.., and if the one contestant violated a rule, then he's disqualified. Where's the controversy?

American Idol is a sham. Its about ratings and they need controversy to survive.

That's why they have these judges on the show now who can't sing judging people on their singing.

Martin should have been on there. She has a better voice then Vaughn. I still don't see why the judges picked Vaughn over Martin. Is it because Vaughn said she lost her voice and might not have been able to sing anymore? If that is the case then it is BS that Martin didn't get in. She had a better voice then some of the other ladies that made it. Did the judges give Martin a reason she didn't make it since for 3 years now she made it to Hollywood but then oops you didn't make it again.

NO... I am not too enthused with the top 24, they let alot of talent go. Some of the men sound raspy and won by an inch, if that. Angela Martin, undescribably one of the most determined of them all, great singer, mom, and she can sing! I knew for sure, a third time would be a charm for her, she should've been in the top 24.

    The rest suck really!

For the most part yes, I'm happy with the Top 24. The only problem I have, is the fact that it's not the best 24. It's the Best 12 males and the Best 12 Females. So say there were 3 guys that made it... because they had to have 12 guys, but they weren't as good as 3 girls who didn't make it becuase they already had 12 girls. So don't call it the Top 24 when it isn't. An example of this would be that cute girl from Orlando, FL that has partial paralysis on one side of her face. Her name is Shelby Dressell. She should have been in the top 24.

I thought that "Idol" was about talent and not the background of the contestants, no wonder the judge's are leaving the show. It has lost it's apeal, and are the judge's judging on poor me stories or talent. Oh well, another show going down the tubs. The last winner is not setting a good example either. Very bad.

I was very disappointed that angela martin did not make it. I also think that you shouldn't be allowed in if you have been in previous shows. I think the process of picking 12 guys and 12 girls needs to be examined and the age limit needs to be raised to 40.

I'm finding that it seems each year the best singers are not necessarily chosen to be in the top spots, and that making it to the top final spots are based on something else. Is this a talent show or a "how you look" show? I've decided to stop watching the show because of this. Each year it seems that "the talent" is less important than "the look".

I too was heartbroken that Angela Martin was kicked, but we have to assume they've got their reasons why they pick who they pick. Apparently they "hole up" in the Kodak Theatre for hours deliberating on it, and I'm sure there's plenty that we viewers never see. I'd like to think they don't let "who'd appeal to the viewers" decide who stays and who goes, but I have to admit that there's not much else that could explain the Lynche/Golightly thing. Oh well, if Simon's gone at the end of this season, this may be my last round of "Idol" anyway and I won't have to care anymore....

Angela Martin should have been put through. She is a better singer than several who did make it. I don't think anyone should automatically make it through just because they have tried every year but this girl has more than paid her dues and has the talent. Other than Angela, I would say they got it mostly right. We'll see.
