And the award goes to ... Sandra Bullock, for making history as the first A-list actress to push a movie past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office.
Her latest movie, “The Blind Side,” has been a steady little engine that could, grossing $208.5 million domestically since its November 20 debut, according to the trade publication Variety.
And it looks like it still has room to grow.
“[W]e’re not even done,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman told the trade magazine. “I think ‘Blind Side’ has another $30 million left." (Warner Bros., like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)
The Bullock-led drama is a box office draw that other top actresses like Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon and Julia Roberts haven’t been able to pull off.
Streep’s big hits, “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia,” both earned less than $150 million domestically, and Roberts’s “Erin Brockovich” grossed $125.6 million domestically in 2000.
While 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” earned a remarkable $241.1 million domestically, it was an indie film led by the then-unknown Nia Vardalos.
In total, Bullock’s oeuvre has earned more than $1.72 billion at the domestic box office, according to Variety, which is none too shabby in comparison to her peers: Julia Roberts’s total career gross is $2.31 billion, Streep's is $1.54 billion and Jolie's is $1.44 billion.
I love Sandra! I like her far better than many other so called actresses out there. So glad she is getting recognition.
Some of you people are so funny. You go off on a tangent without going back to re-read what it is you are throwing a fit about. CNN was just issuing a statistic – not giving an opinion. Please read before you make a fool of yourself in print.
Okay now here is my opinion – I really like Sandra Bullock and will go see a movie just because she is in it.
I actually liked her until I saw her on Ellen... not so much after that.
Knew her in college and watched her perform in theatre there. Has always been a hardworking class act. Good for her! Movie was great and she played the part well. She looks better now than in college in the 80s.
Sandra Bullock has always been my idea of the 'girl next door.' The naysayers can have their say - I'll just ignore their rants. Sandra, you go girl !!!!
We are entitled to our own opinion but this expressions of hate by some people are damaging to themselves. Actors have chosen this career, and whether we like it or not we have to admit they work very hard. It is true we like some better than others, some misbehave; granted they are not perfect; some are icons, and some are not; some are overrated and some are underrated; we complain about how high is their salary, however, I have a question: what were you doing when these actors (men or women) were working really hard to get where they are today or in a charity event, or visiting children in Africa, or visiting terminally ill children in a hospital or making a big donation, or sponsoring an event? What were you doing with your life while they were doing all this? Can we all see the positive in people and their efforts? Yes, we can. It is called good karma and good intentions.
I just saw the movie last night and was terribly impressed with it. I have always liked Sandra Bullock and the best part of her is that you never hear her name in the tabloids
Thank you, thank you, thank you for such a great heart warming movie. Everyone in Hollywood could take a lesson from you Ms. Bullock. You have great integrity, obiviously!
Sandra has been on the screen, TV and public events and this movie has changed someone's life. What more can you expect from a person. She touched millions of lives. Good for you Sandra
CONGRATS SANDRA!!!! No one on earth will please everybody, all the time, so just take all your accolades and run with it. YOU'VE DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB!!!!
Sandra pulled this one off in a big way. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen during Blindside!! I was literally riveted!! This may sound hokey but her character spoke to me during that movie and I'm not sure Streep or any of the others have every been able to speak in the same way!! It's not a matter of who is the better actress....I can't even imagine Streep or Jolie or Roberts being able to play the part. It was tailor made for Bullock!! Bravo Sandra!!
She has come a long way since the movie Speed, in which I thought she was a terrible actress. Now I think she is a great actress and I enjoy all of her movies.
I guess what is bothering some people is that the article implies that Sandra Bullock must be a better actress than the others because a movie headed by her made more money than any led by them. Of course that makes no sense–example–My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Nia Vardalos, while charismatic and talented, is not an actress like Meryl Streep. Well, neither is Sandra Bullock. Can you imagine Sandra Bullock in Silkwood? (I can't even imagine her in the Cher part.) Or in last year's The Reader?
That said, good for Sandra Bullock for picking vehicles that suit her talents well. She's good in the movies she's in and she knows what appeals to the public. And she's charismatic. People want to like her, and they do.
I have wondered about plastic surgery too.
Love Sandra Bullock... Loved the movie too! Though my favorite has to be "While You Were Sleeping"!!! I've seen it dozens of time and never get tired of it.
I 'm very happy for Sandra :she's always been the consummate actress:now she has something to
show for it.
Congratulations to the whole cast! Does anyone even know who Quinton Aaron is? He did a great job too...they were all good, the story was great, and Sandra did a fantastic job. But, even though I'm a fan, I'm not sure we can compare her to Meryl Streep.
Not to mention she's got a great little restaurant in Austin!!
Mark C's a good judge of low IQ American's – MARK C'S AN IDIOT – Sandra Bullock is an excellent actress and at the same time is extreemly humble when it comes to acknowledging her own talent
I'm so happy for Sandra! She is an arlington Va pride. I attended the same high school as she and even had teachers that taught her! I think she did a fantastic job in the Blindside and she is a decent actress. She deserved this win! And if she gets an oscar, good for her!
Happy for you, Sandra! She is one of the very nicest, the most down-to-earth, and stunningly gorgeous woman in the world. I met her shopping in Beverly Hills and she was very kind and lovely for chatting with me. I have always loved her since that great movie she did with Sly Stallone. If you ever see Sandra in person, I'm telling you she is beyond flawless.
While Sandra Bullock was great in the film (loved her performance), it is the story of Michael Oher and his family that we the public love and go back to see again and again.
I love Sandra, but I would think that Nia Vardalos was the one who made history rather than an "A level" actress accomplishing something Nia did 8 years ago. Was that a featured story on CNN?
Hello film companies get a clue. The american audience is yearning for movies that have some kind of a moral and a happy ending. this was the only feel good movie out there for the last 6 monthes.
I enjoyed the movie and thought she was great in the movie. I have always enjoyed her.
I don't really think it is Sandra Bullock that is making this movie a success. I think it has more to do with the story line. A true story of overcoming enormous obstacles that are in front of you will warm anybodys' heart. It is also perfect timing for a move like this to come out. I would have seen this movie with any leading lady, I did not see this movie because it was Sandra Bullock. I actually thought her southern draw was awful and at times embarrassing. Please don't take this as a shot at Sandra Bullock, I like her comedies and I liked her in Hope Floats, but I think she is getting too much credit for this movie.
I love Sandra Bullock and all her movies, but I don't understand the dismissive tone of the article concerning Nia Vardelos and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Those earnings for an independent movie with a not previously known lead actress should be all the more of a remarkable achievement, and should require the major studios and their actresses to bring in far nire before they're giving themselves pats on the back for their great success.
Well maybe other movies would have a chance to do better $$$ wise if they weren't pulled so fast from the theatres!
All I can say is through her career... she has always been a favorite of mine. Very wholesome, very classy and represents herself the proper way. Keeping herself, her hubby and their kids protected. She is the best ever... and I am glad she was recognized! Yo go girl!
Always funny how the top grossing films never get oscar nods
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE! Stop your hating for just a second and let's go over this again: The "history" that was made was this: Sandra Bullock is the first actress to have a film cross $200M that was marketed SOLELY on her name. I am a HUGE Bullock fan, but this has nothing to do with that, or with her performance. The marketing machine behind "The Blind Side" was built around her name. Solo above the title, solo name residing on the posters and billboards, solo named mentioned in trailers and t.v. spots. "The Blind Side" is the first film to cross the $200M marker that was sold on the basis of ONE actresses name. This is what makes it unique. Yes, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and all the "Star Wars" films and "Titanic" all crossed $200M, but they were not marketed on a singular name, much less a solo actress carrying all of the weight. So yes, of course there were many, many other reasons that led to the success of "The Blind Side," but the point here is that this was a marketing feat. This is a big event for women in Hollywood and hopefully gives them a little more clout.
For those that think Sandra needs to tackle character driven roles and even the "accent factor," I suggest you check out "Infamous," in which she had a supporting role but turned in a wonderful, subtle performance as Harper Lee. Had the film not come out so soon after "Capote," you would have heard much more about it. It's a little gem that also stars Sigourney Weaver, Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig. Also try "28 Days" co-starring Viggo Mortenson. It was a studio release, but it felt like an indie. It was character driven and had your standard rehab drama cliches worked in, but there was great subversive humor and a huge heart, but strayed away from being overly schmaltzy.
Congradulations Sandra! Excellent work over the years. Its been long over due. (I'm sure other great actresses in Hollywood are happy for her as well).
Good for her and for all you you on this forum trashing her....what's your problem? don't trash her for making the movie Speed. I seemed to remember that Tom Hanks first starred in a TV sitcom called "Busom Buddies" where he dressed as a women to live in a certain apartment building. Look at him now. There are A LOT of actors that started off in TV or not Oscar worthy movies. Give it a break and stop being haters. It's bad on your stress level and gives you frown wrinkles.
Applause for Sandra Bullock. Your recognition is long overdue. I loved your performance in the movie "Speed."
Way to go Sandra!!!!!
You are the best!
I love Sandra! Good for her!
Congratulations to Ms. Bullock for her wonderful boxoffice record – she's one believable, likeable gal...
...who has been kind enough to leave her face alone. (What happened to Nicole Kidman? She looks like she was kicked in the mouth by a horse! Ouch. Please, someone tell her.)
The real issue is, how much money is too much to make on one movie? A quarter billion? Is the entertainment industry out of control? Have we created monsters? How much money is too much to pay for a leading actor?
We, with the help of the parasitic media, have created these monsters with our silly idol worship and celebrity addiction, so I guess it is only fair we have to feed them.
Food for thought.
She looked amazing last night at the people's choice awards, and her speech was heartfelt. LOVE HER! and love Streep, Roberts and Reese! and Aniston!
Nice lady, lots of class with a capital "C", keep up the good work
Margot.....you took a day off work to go see a movie - this movie?!?!
That, along with the fact that 300+ people (including me) took time to post about something so inane and meaningless as box office income, says a lot about the state of America.
I'm so glad I don't live there.
All you people out there commenting on what a bad job she does and she isn't worth a flip. Well......are you talking about yourselves, because to everyone else either your jealous or don't have a hoot what acting is all about. Try it sometime. You probably stink at it. Get the hint.
I've been a fan of hers since Love Potion #9. I knew she'd be a big hit then. Feels so good to be right!
I have always enjoyed Sandra's work. She never fails to deliver. Her comedic timing is spot-on, however she can also deliver in more serious roles. I especially enjoyed Blind Side, but I also enjoyed the romantic comedy, The Proposal. I love that she has not allowed herself to be typecast. Just consider some of her films: Speed, Crash, Miss Congeniality, 28 Weeks, The Lake House, Two Weeks Notice, Blind Side and the list goes on. She's the best and audiences love her because we know when we go to see a Bullock movie, she will deliver.
Sandra Bullock pulled in over 200 Million Dollars in one of the worst economies we've seen in years. And as for adjusting for inflation in regards to the other movies, inflation was less than 2% this year. So she still comes out on top. Don't understand the reasoning by not giving My Big Fat Greek Wedding its due, however, just because it was an indie film.
Of all the actresses, she is the most classiest...kind...and real. I love Sandra Bullock and its about time the media recognizes a person for the GOOD they've done instead of all the drama and confusion that floods the tabloids. Congrats Sandra!
Whatever.... I would have seen this movie with our Sandra in it. This movie is not about her. Get a life people. If you need to see a movie because a certain star is in it.... you really need to get a life!
I loved the movie and so did everyone I know who went to see it. You'd have to be a stone hard person to not like it. I'm hoping it has the ripple effect of when Angelina began adopting older children, Americans began to think more about adopting more older children instead of babies. Babies get adopted so quickly, while older kids most often don't have a shot and they need the guidance and love the most. Improving society one little step at a time! Maybe we'll have less kids on the streets and a better society in the end! Hopeful for adoption of older kids in 2010!
I totally agree with the kudos for Sandra Bullock. Way to go.
I do not agree with the "male" comments on this though. You have your opinions as we all do but, if you do not like her then don't watch her....
alot of interesting comments posted here. Blindside albeit a feelgood movie, was one of the best I've seen. Sandra nailed it, deserves an oscar for her performance. She's a classy lady, not to mention she was hot as heck in blindside.Being a huge nfl fan, she really seemed to nail the role as Michael Oehr's mom. great to see that he received 2nd voting in nfl rookie offensive player of the year.
Yes, movie prices have increased, but no one is mentioning that it also costs a WHOLE LOT MORE to make a movie now than even 10 yrs. ago. I don't know exactly how the math worked but here's a little "math" for you: Several actors in this movie have just been catapulted into the spotlight. Having an A-lister's name attached to a film is how it initially gets recognition, then it's media and word of mouth. So if nothing else, Sandra has just helped boost a bunch of careers and has also managed to stay alive in the shark infested waters of the entertainment business all while being a charitable human being. So you can hate her, love her, compare and contrast her – she did good and she will make sure all involved get their due.
it is an excellent story about a real man in the real world.she did an excellent job of showing what real people can be if they open their hearts.LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THY SELF.THAT WHICH YOU DO TO THE LEAST OF MY BRETHERIN YOU DO UNTO ME!
Hollywood: take notice.
You don't need CGI to have a box office hit.
Just a good old great storyline with a good cast so that people leave the theater feeling good.
Still don't get it?
for she's a jolly good actress, for she's a jolly good actress .... and cute!!!
congrats and hats off to Sandra Bullock. She is a diva on screen. Keep up the good work!!!!
To the person asking about the "Erin Brockovich" figures being adjusted for inflation, according to US Inflation Calculator, $125.60 in 2000 USD is still only worth $157.79 in 2009 USD. In other words, "The Blind Side" has still made more money domestically, even accounting for inflation.
I love Sandra Bullock and always will!
Yes! Sandra Bullock has been under-rated for years. She has great comic timing in "While You Were Sleeping" and "Miss Congeniality", and does great with drama in "Time to Kill" and "The Blind Side". I am so glad she is finally getting the recognition she deserves. She is also supposed to be one of the nicest celebs out there. Bullock is also very involved in charity work and donating to charities. Go Sandra!
Dollars should not be used to judge movies. A ticket today cost 10+ times what a ticked cost for say "Gone With The Wind". They should go with the number of tickets sold.
BRAVO! Mrs. Sandra. You deserve.
H. L. Mencken said it best: "No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."
I have always liked Sandra...since the beginning she is funny and natural in real life..that what attracts us to her acting...excellent
I LOVE THIS WOMAN
Good for you Sandra.
Here's a tip...the next time you get your face done, have your NECK done too. BTW, get a new facialist, your current one should have taken care of this for you.
Sandra certainly belongs in the "AGING WELL" hall of fame.
The movie is great.Sandra is even greater, lovely and beautiful. You deserve it gal.And you are the most classy celebrity woman ever.Sandra bullock is simply a complete woman.
That's a great accomplishment for a great actress. She consistently plays interesting and different types of quality female roles and the only stereotype is that she plays them all well. Congratulations on the accomplishment.
Way to go Sandra! I've always admired her as a very good actress and hoped that she would get more good movies to do, and I'm so glad she did. You are one of the best actresses I've ever known and watched. Congradulations! I hope she will received many awards. she deserve it! Congrat's and congradulation again. Oh and by the way it's not only the story that is a good story it's the (actress) that was able to do great performance of the story and that's,Sandra Bullock, made that story come alive, that's great and that's , Sandra Bullock, a great actress and performer, and who cares if she had plastic surgery, it doesn't look like it and her outward appearance has always been beautiful, she is a very classy lovely lady. I hope she wins best
actress at the Academy Awards. She did an excellent job in the movie
"Blind Side". Excellent acting Sandra.

"Blind Side". Excellent acting Sandra.
i did not like her acting in the past years.....but she have gotten better as the years go by...love her in CRASH......she really won my heart in BLIND SIDE....
she was great in "Love Potion #9" too!!!!!! check that one out....
Way to go Sandra! Yea!!! I've always admired you as a very good actress and hope that you would get more good movies to do, and I'm so glad you did. Sandra Bullock is an amazing actress! Her performance in "Blind Side" was incredible and "All about Steve" was wickedly funny. She can't miss getting some type of award this year!
I really enjoy Sandra Bullock's movies and am happy for her that she's doing so well. She's relateable and amusing.
Sandra was good in The Blind Side, which was unexpected since it was such a departure from the sometimes ditzy roles she plays. However, I really liked the movie because it was a great story. I wasn't a football fan and had never heard of Michael Oher before seeing the movie. Now I'm rooting for him. Where he came from and what he's accomplished with the help he received is fantastic. I'll be following his career. And what a way to start your professional NFL career, with a story about your life to date.
So is no one noticing the trend here? That it doesn't matter the star...its about the MOVIE! My Big Fat Greek Wedding was successful because it was a fun, fresh, comedy. That men and woman could enjoy. The same goes for The Blind Side. Men and Woman enjoy it. People so soon forget the horrible movie that also came out this year All About Eve...that no one saw. Because it was Horrible, not because Sandra Bullock was in it.
I can't be happier for Sandra BUllock. I NEVER comment on stories or blogs, but felt I had to give a huge online handclap to my sister Sandra. For the first time in life my husband and I both loved a movie. We both sat there on the verge of tears, laughter, just in awe of Sandra's performance. Seriously, everyone I have asked about this movie said they would go watch it again. I would too, but we can't take another day off work because we don't have a sitter. Any way, bottom line: Sandra needs an Oscar people. Don't hate. It's her moment to shine.
Would love to see a sequel to "the net". She is a down to earth actress, who loves what she does and does not have her nose in the air like other actresses.
Talented, funny, great morals, plus she's a hottie to boot. Why shouldn't she be successful? Go Girl!!!
The real question is when is the sequel to "the net" coming out?
Sandra Bullock is entertaining but not stellar. She has broad audience appeal because she resembles the girl next door. That's how Julia Roberts started out. I still like watching her movies because she can be so goofy and silly; you can't help but laugh out loud!!
Dawn, it is heartening to know you went to HS with Sandra and that she was down to earth person as you know here. However, this does not reflect herself playing character roles and this is what the general public sees who doesn't know her personally.
I have never given much credit to Sandra Bullock as an actress, simply because she doesn't do much for me on screen. IMO, there are far better actresses out there, much more skilled than her, who are deserving of this award. For instance, Sigourney Weaver in Avatar or Meryl Streep for several movies. THESE actresses are outstanding actresses, have a history in acting in incredible films, have clout in Hollywood, long have earned their making-money-for-movies badge, where Sandra Bullock doesn't even come close.
A-lister? Not really. She is a known actress Hollywood but I would absolutely not categorize her as an A-lister.
Bullock rules, always loved her especially in The Net, however, this article is old. Avatar/Sigourny Weaver are at $352 million for US sales.
I went to high school with Sandra - and it seems that she is still the same down to earth person she always was. I agree with the person who said it is ridiculas to degrade her as a person and actress. I just don't see the point. I am personally very happy for her success - meaning she is working, doing good things with her life and has a life outside of the hollywood scene. You have to respect the actors and actresses who don;t end up in the tabloid all of the time for acting like fools. She is a class act! Congrats Sandy!!
Sandra Bullock is awesome. She is the best of all the rest.
Have loved Sandra Bullock since I saw her in Hope Floats. That movie made me wanna pack all my stuff, move to Texas, and find "my" Justin Matese.
She is a great actress wether it be comedy or drama. Blind Side is on my list and will see it soon.
People need to go to boxofficemojo.com and see inflation adjusted dollars. The old stars destroyed these meaningless records. Julie Andrews was the lead in both the Sound of Music (over $1 Billion in today's numbers) and Mary Poppins ($575M). Not to mention Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra ($500M). Blind Side is not even in the top 100 (and does not have a real chance of getting there). Inflated ticket prices (not to mention the way more people in the US) is the real reason. It is a nice record for Sandra but that is all.
I cannot stand watching Sandra Bullock. Never could and never will.
And I certainly wouldn't put so much emphasis on her, alone, drawing in the $$ for Blind Side. No way. There are fabulous actors in this movie that should take the credit just as much as her.
Come on, CNN and movie critics.... give credit where credit is due, will ya? Sheesh.
Way to go Sandra. Its nice to see a good girl make it!
I saw Blind Side, and she did a really good job. This movie should be nominated for one of those movie awards.
It is about time Sandy was recognized for her value and contributions to the industry. She had three wonderful movies in 2009, two of which struck gold. Too bad she has none coming out in 2010. As you can see on this blog, there are a lot of hateful people floating around the internet. Normally hurtful comments upset me. But some of the comments below were so absurd (Skank?????) they made me laugh out loud. If Sandy is a skank, what word would he use for Paris or Britney?
I have followed Sandy's career since 1989 and have loved almost all of her movies and performances. What makes her such a good actress is she makes her characters believable and sympathetic. She comes across as "being" a character, not just "pretending to be" a character.
As a person, she is like no one else in Hollywood. She gives regularly to charity, is gracious to her fans, is reportedly great to work with and for, does not have a typical celebrity ego, has not destroyed her life or career with some stupid scandal, and does the movies she wants to do rather than just trying to please the hard to please critics and Academy voters.
She is one of just two celebrities in the world that I would ever care to meet in person. The other is Gabrielle Miller from up here in Canada.
I didn't see the movie, but were there not other people in it? Why is it only Sandra Bullock? Don't get me wrong, I like a number of movies she was in, but she didn't do it all on her own!
Wait a sec, My Big Fat Greek Wedding did more but doesn't count because she wasn't as well known? sorry, but that makes this whole thing stupid.
Im sure Gone With the Wind sold more tickets, adn would break this record if translated to today's dollars, acting like Bullock did anything special is just plain stupid. Plenty of HUGE movies have had a Female lead in the past, and they should not be dismissed.
Sandra Bullock is great – like her a lot -
but don't people understand that gross money earned is an ever inflated number? We would be able to compare movies from different decades more acurately if number of tickets sold and not the amount of money grossed were reported. With movies costing twice as much for the public to view as they did several years ago, the studios (with media support) have reported overinflated numbers to create false "greatness." We are not comparing apples to apples and I am frustrated few people seem to recognize this.
There are so many comments, I hope I am not repeating, but what I think the beauty is of both Sandra and Nia's films, is the fact that they are sweet films. Not full of foul language and sex and naked people...just good story telling that shows that marriages can be good, racism can be erased, women OF A CERTAIN AGE (over 40) can look good and be attractive to us all, and family should still be the number one priority!! As a junior high school English teacher I can tell you firsthand that the breakdown of the American family is what is wrong with education, and therefore, the world today!
She is so HOT, Jesse you are a lucky man. Pinch yourself.
totally agree with covina. the movie was the draw, not the actors.
It's nice to see Sandra Bullock stretch and not just play the same 'romantic" roles again and again. There is nothing that differentiates her performances in "While You Were Sleeping" to "The Proposal" to "Speed", etc.
However, with "The Blind Side" she's showing that she's willing to take risks and grow into more mature roles. Congrats !
Sweet! I have loved her since "The Net". She's freakin awesome.
ExpeeALidocious! Great Work in the Blind Side. This leading
lady should win an OSCAR for her acting. Really liike Tim
McGraw in his role as well. Great Story. Great Film. SDG.
GO SANDY BABY! We miss you here at East Carolina U! You, Emily Proctor and Emily Grant are doing the drama dept proud. No offense top the rest of our broadway folks and such. You aall are great.
Sandra Bullock has certainly come a long ways! She deserves this as much as any other actress out there. And just for the records – I AM a Sandra Bullock fan (she is my favorite) – she is VERY down to earth, funny, beautiful (inside and out) and a great actress. Who cares what and IF she has had plastic surgery wherever and whatever......who really hasn't this day in age??? Who cares what the movie is "about" or who starred in it – the fact of the matter is it brought in millions of dollars.......AND, Sandra Bullock DID make history as a result of it – regardless of what anyone negatively thinks about her – deal with it, for you can't change it! Obviously – there are more out there who believe in her and support her!
So the message of this story, to me, is "What, Nia Vardalos, your movie made $241 million domestically, and now you want some 'history'? Psssh. Come back when you've got some famous."
I'm glad that the movie has done well but, as others have said, these numbers don't mean much.
Hollywood needs to start using the much more relevant standard of how many tickets were sold... not box office revenue. Until they do, these comparisons will remain largely meaningless.
The Movie was great Because it was a true story where good does happen and faith is real and Sandra brought it to life
Great "Real" True Story + Great and "Real" actor = A WINNER
Great Job Sandra!
You know what- Thanks CNN. This is very entertaining. :)
She is my favorite actress! She was absolutely great in "The Blind Side" as she is in all her films!
Go Sandy!! She is amazing and deserves to be recognized.
I never understand why they compare movies in dollars instead of tickets sold. isn't that the more accurate reflection of how a movie did when comparing to others made when ticket prices were different!
I would be lying if I didn't say I have a crush on her. The best looking actress by far, of any that are leading lady types at the moment. I know that doesn't mean she is a great actress, but it helps sell tickets to me.
I know that part of her appeal has got to be her down to earth persona. And of course then there is that beautiful doe eyed, square jawed face of hers... a smile that lights up the room.... what's not to like.
Her job is to ENTERTAIN.....Job well done..
Love you Sandra..Keep em' coming!
Hey I think Meryl Streep would welcome a little healthy competition. She is a pro and a very gracious person. (unlike some of the comments here) Way to go Sandra... Also there are many excellent actors out there now..Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, and don't forget some of the older actors like Helen Mirren and Dame Judy Dench, Maggie Smith..
No one can possilby list them all. I'm just very happy that Sandra is doing so well and good for her!
Christian, of course Sandra is not in the same calibre as Julia Roberts because she's not a homewrecker!
All the more reason to love this woman – she has earned this acknowledgement. In a class all by herself!
Morgan, I agree with you. To caveat....Sandra, Meryl, Julia, Kate, Angelina, Michelle Pheiffer are all great actresses within their own right...and they ALL have had their good and bad roles.
As for data, data analysis is my field and I can tell you this, numbers don't lie...... UNLESS you WANT to the skew the data to your liking. Therefore, I don't take a lot of stock in things of this nature or gallop poles for popular opinions.
As mom always said (and Thumper) "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." We have too much hating in this world as it is.
P.S. You can have a great title and a great story line....but you also have to have a box office draw to the sell tickets. So, buy a ticket, eat the popcorn and you just might find out you'll like it! Congrats Sandra!
I LOVE Sandra Bullock. Have always been a big fan. I think she's amazingly talented.
However, I believe she is not the only reason–or even the biggest reason–this movie has done so well. The real story here is the fact that this SCRIPT, pretty atypical of Hollywood in many of its aspects, made big.
I believe word of mouth is what's propelled this movie. And what's propelled the word of mouth is the script–the fact that it's so feel-good and speaks to real people in the "fly-over" states. There are so few of these types of films–films that lift up rather than snub their noses at regular people (who, gasp, even have conservative values)–that when you happen upon one, you just want to tell everybody to see it. Sandra Bullock has been great in all her films, and she does an exceptional job in this one. But there are tons of phenomenal performances, from both males and females, that never see the 200 million dollar mark.
The type of story this is, combined with beloved Sandra Bullock and huge country star Tim McGraw (don't underestimate his power), all made this film successful.
She is the best thing that has come down the pipe in many years. I hope she gets every oscar they award for acting. Furthermore, Tim was outstanding and he deserves the same treatment (Blind Side) The true story couple in Memphis are just as deserving and should have a Nobel Peace Award with more trimming than Obama's.
its about time!!! she has always been my favorite actress- loved her in "While you were Sleeping" She is fabulous
It is about time she gets the recognition she deserve.
Ever think it might be about the movie and the story and not always the actors! I would never go see a movie just because of a certain person is playing a roll, everyone has 1 bad roll in their career, except Nick Cage he is just bad!
The movie The Blind Side was a very funny movie, some scenes were a little sad I don't like sports but really enjoyed this movie.
Not sure I understand the point of writing an article about "making history" if someone else did it already.
"While 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” earned a remarkable $241.1 million domestically, it was an indie film led by the then-unknown Nia Vardalos."
Oh... wait... Sandra Bullock's A-LIST. So I guess if it's not one of the pre-packaged commodities Hollywood churns off the assembly line, it doesn't count.
Move out of the way Angelina!!
They follow Sandra's behind around with a camera! I gotta watch this movie!
Those of us who like good actors view their films because we enjoy
their acting perfomances. We care less about what it brings in as far
dollar amount. Sandra has always made a good impression with me
because she doesn't make the entertainment headline day after day.
She seems to pick her roles carefully. I sure hope she wins best
actress at the Academy Awards. She did an excellent job in the movie
"Blind Side". So did Tim McGraw. Excellent acting Sandra.
Can't wait to see her pick up her Golden Globe!
Do these figures take into account that movie ticket prices are double what they used to be if compared to Erin Brockovich etc.? Love the movie though. Totally worth the $$.
I really enjoyed the movie. I hope that more people will make movies that are just as inspiring!
sandra bullock deserves the oscar, emmy, etc etc. she was fabulous in that movie.............
there should be alot more movies like that. maybe it would make it a better world, and less violence.
it was a very moving story, that was true which made it even more rewarding.
the white family taking in a poor homeless african american kid, keeping him off drugs, off the streets, and giving him love, schooling, and a home with a loving family, needs to be done more often.
rose perrotti hamden,ct
WAY to go Sandra!
I love Sandra Bullock, she has always been my favorite actress!!! Loved "The Proposal". A side note, I think Meryl Streep's new movie, "It's Complicated" will draw in a lot of money as well!! Meryl is an amazing actress and she was amazing(and looked great too) in her latest movie.
I guess if you are not a political
activist people enjoy your movies
The political activists in Hollywood
should get out and hit the Wash.
Sandra is a throw back to the 40' 50's
Hollywood and I like that . She's there
That movie was stupid and if I didn't know it was based on a true story, I'd say it was not even true. They did a bad job of developing the characters and instead just followed Sandra's Bullock's behind around with the camera. It was a ridiculous waste of money.
Thanks for the adver-news. Money making isn't always a benchmark of quality, especially when it comes to movies ... it's more often a sign of good marketing & being able to interest the lowest common denominator. Not that I dislike Ms. Bullock, but I just don't find this 9-sentence-long article to be meaningful in any way.
Has anyone considered that the inflation rate for movie going has doubled since 2000? We used to pay $4 to see Erin Brockovich, and paid $8.50 to see the Blind Side! Not that it was not a great movie, acutally best family film I've seen in years, but the money quotes are a bit lacking in inflation stats!
All of you should remember one thing... just like art and music, actors create there own individual "Artistic" style. Meryl, Angelina, Julia, Kate, Sandra and so many others have their own separate box office appeal. This is what sets them apart from each other. Thank goodness! If they all had the same acting style, movies starring these actresses would become quite boring.
I have not seen "The Blind Side". From what I have heard from many of my friends who have seen it, it was a great movie. I like Sandra's "artistic" style so I'm sure she has done well with this film. so why not allow her some press. She deserves it just as much as the others do. There's no reason to think one artistic style is better than another. It's all likes/dislikes and opinion. That's why dollar amounts for comparison come into play.
I'd much rather hear about someone's creative achievements instead of how many lovers Tiger has tried to keep a secret from his wife.
You go girl !!!!!!!!!
count me among those to add the $30M. I love Sandra and will always support her
You're humble Sandra, and I admire that, even though you and I share the same birthday! People either love us or hate us...no in-between.
I've been a fan since Love Potion No. 9, and her work in 28 Days was increadible.
She deserve's a lot of credit. Let the haters hate – she's just watching the money pile up!
Good for her. I have always felt that she is a stellar actress... not given the recognition she deserved! Go Sandra!
The movie was good and so was Sandra, however I saw too much of the movie on commericals. I felt as all the good parts of the movie I had already seen by the time I got to see the movie at Christmas time.
Crazy white family adopt black football prodige because of their fanatical devotion to the Miss college team.
And guess what, he ends up playing for them, and his former HS coach gets a plum job with the college team days later.
This isn't a story about race or overcoming life's hurdles, it's a movie that glamorizes corruption and cheating in college athletics.
After all, it's the American way !!!
It is the great story not the actress that is making the movie such a financial success IMO.
Many of these comments are off topic. This award is for making money. It says nothing about Sandra Bullock's looks or acting skills, which are much more ambiguous than a dollar figure. The comparision between Sandra and other A-List actresses is a monetary comparison. So in that context, it is OK to mention her in the same breath with Meryl Streep. The comments about ticket price inflation and inflation generally are justified. The dollar amounts should be normalized to current year dollars for comparison on equal footing.
Best wishes for Ms. Bullock to have a successful lobbying or legislative season in 2010. "God" knows documentary television could use her talents so much.
Since they are making so much money at the box office will ticket prices go down?
When box office numbers were released years (I'm talking '40's, '50's, 60's) ago, inflation wasn't so rampant from one year to the next as to ticket prices, so comparisons would be more realistic. But to say that a movie today makes $x dollars vs. a movie 20 years only making half of that and therefore didn't sell as well, well, it just doesn't compute.
I wish they tracked paid attendance, the way the sports folks do. Could you imagine the attendance rankings if a seat in a modern day corporate-john-named stadium was compared to say, Fenway Park 50 years ago? You would think one of those john's stadiums was a great place to go.
Maybe the folks that track album sales could start tracking actual movie attendance? I seem to recall that their system brought honesty to the counting of album sales.
Way to go Sandra!!!! You are my favorite actress in HOLLYWOOD!!!! People stop complaining! if you don't like the article then don't read it!!! I'm not a fan of Maryl Strepp or Julia Roberts, but you don't see me trashing them. All three of them have done great movies and all deserve the same respect. People have class!
What does "A-list actress to push a movie past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office" mean? Why isn't Natalie Portman considered the first? She was in all 3 recent Star Wars movies and they made a lot more than $200 million each. For that matter, you could go back to the original Star Wars trilogy and say that Carrie Fisher did this from 1977 to 1983 in non-inflation adjusted dollars (a lot more impressive than $200M in 2009 dollars).
Sandra is just a beautiful person. She is a serious actress with a sense of humor.
I am so happy for this wonderful actress. Just outstanding and a wonderful role model for all woman.
Good for her. I wish her all the best.
Awesome !!! I love her she is the best and her Hubby too!Congrats Sandra.
I love it when deserving people finally get the recognition they deserve. Everybody ignore mcmuffin's comments and let's just keep giving props to Sandra.
I love feel good movies ( especially in the times we live in) and I love Sandra. I think that she has been underrated as an actress for a long time. She is funny, beautiful, and seems to be very down to earth and does not seem Hollywood at all. More and more sucess to you.
Blind Side is THE best Sandra Bullock movie I have ever seen. Not only Sandra, but Tim McGraw...WOW. Blind Side is a story about life and how choose to live it...how we choose to treat others, no matter what their situation is. I wish every human being would see it and learn from it...peace in the world might actually mean something.
Congratulations, Sandra...you are deserving.
BTW tickets aren't $11 every where!!! Here they are only $6.50!!!!!!
Dear CNN, it should read "in comparison with," not "in comparison to."
Sandra you are amaizing acctress. Loved all your acts. You deserve lot more. May God bless you.
She's our favorite. What's not to like?
she is worth every penny
Way to go Sandra. She is great!!!! Love her movies!!!!!!!!! She is my dream lady. Such a down to earth person.
And she did it all while staying a good girl and never doing a nude scene on film...Unfortunately.
She's so hot, i've been in love with her since Speed! : )
Me LOVE Sandra B.. You go Girl do your thing, she is a great model for our young girls. Sandra screams "REAL"..
I am happy for Sandra! There are very few actresses that have sold their talent and not their looks.Sandra, and among others Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Kate Blanchette, Kate Winslet. Good Job Sandra!
Based on her performance as LeeAnn Touhy, she deserves an Oscar. It was a great performance, and a perfect job mimicking her style and demeanor. Bravo!
why is commercial success the goal of film making? OK, we all like money, but couldn't some other interest in a film be at the forefront of the news???
Sandra is a tiger that has more than earned her stripes. Good for her.
This was the greated peice of work that I have ever seen done by an actress. She was superb and did a great job. She deserves a lot of praise for the way she played the part in this movie.
Is it Sandra or is it that the storyline and connection to the NFL that carried this movie. Too much is attributed to the stars and not enough to those who wrote the script, directed.. etc...
CONGRATS SANDRA! I have always enjoyed her movies, they had good messages in emotional ones, good plots, and she has never caved in stuck to her morals regarding sex scenes. An all around great actress, IMO.
GO SANDRA! GO PIRATES!
Three words: Box Office Poison!
I love Sandra Bullock. She's a joy to watch on the screen and she seems like the kind of girlfriend you would love to hang out with. Sandy, keep making more movies. Your fans will support you !
OK, so I like Sandra. She's cute and funny. But you can't really compare her to Meryl Streep. Let's talk about Oscar count. Let's talk about difficult roles. Let's talk about carrying a movie without having lots of special effects to help you out. Not to mention being able to pull off difficult accents (Danish, Polish, Italian) in a realistic fashion.
To talk about Meryl Streep's career in terms of Mama Mia and Devil Wears Prada is a bit rediculous when one considers Out of Africa, Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, Kramer vs Kramer, etc.
I'd like to see Sandra step out of romantic comedies and action / suspense and try on something new (character driven period piece perhaps?).
The fair assessment of the TALENTS of an actress is the breadth and depth of their range, not neccessarily how much money they can make for the studio.
GO SANDRA! I've always loved her always. I think she is gorgeous, talented and very funny.
From one ECU PIRATE fan to another.....Way to go Sandra! You are a remarkable actress and you are finally getting the recogntion you deserve!!! I wish you nothing but continued success!
Sandra is an example to women of all ages. She is timeless, talented and so human. She conducts her private life in such a public business with such class. We can all learn from her. She is smart, funny and truly beautiful. I still love Miss Congeniality 1and 2 the best through. I have no doubt she can take care of herself and look great doing it! She's a riot. Best wishes to her in 2010.
I agree with the Meryl Streep fans on this site. The woman is an un-rivaled talent. Just the myriad of the accents that she has perfected in numerous movies are enough to put this wanna-be to shame.
I mean really; "Sandra is such a good person" blah, blah. You people don't know her. And as far as this hack getting these kinds of box office numbers, let's be real . It was the subject matter and not Bullock that pulled in the numbers. You could have stuck anyone in there and the numbers would have been the same.
And no one wants to hear anymore fluff about how she's championing Jesse James to get custody of his kid and what a great human being this makes her. Uggh, give it a rest already.
I must be the only person on the planet who have not seen a Sandra Bullock movie or heard of the woman. This cave I am living in does not get TV/hollywood reception. Anyway, nice to see women doing their thing.
Of note, isnt it interesting that after all these years of movie making that it's only now that a WOMAN has earned of honor of over $200 million/film domestically which by comparison is much less than what the A-list male actors pull in. We have come along way since women were kept pregnant and barefeet, but boy, we have a long way to go. Any way..kudos to Ms. Bullock. Now..Im going to head back to my cave.
Haha... funny. People can argue just about anything!
Good job Sandra!!! You are the best!!!!!
To all that say she can't act. The feelings Sandra portraid shows she is a very accomplished and capable actress. I have never been a big fan of hers. But to say she was not a great actress in this moving is not understanding acting. her acting along with the story made a great movie. The support of Big Mike quiteness also helped project Sandra's acting. She definatly can act and the story was great. Yes, Sandra, so far is the best actress I have seen in 2009 or 2010.
I work in a retail shop in a ski resort where this fine lady spends vacation time. She is one of the most polite and respectful people I have ever met. She deserves all she has earned. She is all class. She is a great role model in her personal life. Bravo for Sandra.
Happy for Ms Bullick, but she was not the first actress to gross over $200M as the article states. Why do we have to segregate people out to give them an award. Soon it will be "the first blonde actress to gross $100B" or the "first man under 5 feet to gross $100B". Why can't the first just be the "first"?
just shows how shallow we are, pay our sports stars millions, spend billions on movies, how much have you, and yes I mean you, spent to help homeless or people who cant even turn on the heat?
I always love Sandra.. Her beauty and her performance are natural. I am not surprised, but was expecting it.. Keep pushing forward Sandra.
When I think of Sandra Bullock, I think of "Speed" and "Demolition Man." When I think of Jim Carey, I think of "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb and Dumber." They both made their breaks in "lowly" roles, but they both moved beyond those roles and demonstrated versatility in their acting abilities that were not evident when the public first "met" them as performers.
When I think of Heath Ledger, I think of that god awful TV show "Roar" from the late 90s. But that doesn't mean he didn't still manage to build a great career culminating in one of the best on screen performances of all time.
We now take time from this supposed news story to hawk an affiliates film! If Kevin Bacon is worthy if six degrees of seperation, Meryl Streep's talent merits her a hundred degrees of seperation from Sandra Bullock. The success of Forrest Gump was as due to the charming black woman who sat on the bench and listened to Tom Hanks babbling on as the success of The Blind Side is due to Bullock's acting prowess – NOT AT ALL!!!
Consider this – the movie Speed was a success DESPITE two leads who can't act a lick. I would be more entertained watching 10 seconds of Julia in Erin B. than enduring a marathon of Sandra's oeuvre (ha ha ha)!!
I've always loved Sandra Bullock - through the good and the bad. So happy for her that all is super in Sandy world these days! She deserves it. Her movies are always fun.
Come on, Ms.Bullock has something that none of the other ladies do not have and that is a touch of humble. Just watching her makes us happy. She is approchable and does not act like a snob. It doesn't make any difference what the show is about. You come away feeling good and somewhere in there is a good chuckle. No, Sandra, YOUR OUR FAVORITE. We never miss her movies.. Thank you
awesome! everyone loves sandra!
Why are people congratulating her as if she just won something? Its a financial milestone for something she was apart of. I am not trying to diminish her work the movie is great and she did an equally great job. She is however not the only one acting in it, and I believe there was a lot of people behind the scenes too to make it happen. The movie made 200 million not her. I'm sorry but i do not rate an actor's performance or how good a movie is based on box office returns.
Her performance in the Blind Side is great and after seeing the real Leann, the performance became even better. I have always thought she is a very good performer. Her role in 28 Days was a very good, and I never thought she got the credit she deserved for it.
she's icky no matter what she earned...
The Story was good. The movie was Wonderful.
Sandra Bullock is the best. We are so happy for her. One class act is this girl. We love her.
Ms Bullock should get an academy award for her role in "The Blind Side". Wonderful story line. A friend of mine and neighbor of Leigh Anne Tuohy of Memphis, who Ms Bullock portrayed, says Ms Bullock could not have played the part any better. It's time for an academy award for Ms Bullock.
She was great in A Time to Kill! I would like to see her and Mathew M. do another film together.
Although not my favorit actress, the "Blind Side" was a great movie and my respect for Sandra grew 10 fold.
It always amazes me how many people will attack a website or an organization such as CNN, yet somehow can't stay away from it and takes the time to post comments about it. If you don't like CNN, why are you here??
Go Sandra!! A good person with a good heart and one of the few in Hollywood who actual has self-respect and a decent moral compass. Who cares if she is not a "dramatic actress". Look at Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg!! Billions in ticket sales and they started out as rappers!
If you don't agree with with the article just say so. Does that mean you have to resort to low-class name-calling and making derogatory remarks about her character and her body? She is just like everyone else is (or should)... trying to make her way the best she can. I personally can't stand Roberts or Streep, but I will not lower myself to your level. I am not a huge fan of Sandra, but I do think she is a good actress.
I think a better topic for discussion would be: Why do 'entertainers' (and I use the term loosely) have to have so many award shows to reaffirm themselves? Seriously, all they do is pretend to be real people. Why aren't the real heroes who hold down real jobs given awards for their efforts? How about the father who works 80 hour weeks so that he can put food on his table so his children can eat? How about the mothers who work non-stop to keep the house clean, get dinner on the table, chauffeur the kids around, do the shopping, laundry, etc... from the moment they wake up to when they go to bed?
'Entertainers' get their awards/rewards when they get paid.
I disagree with those who are being mean and disrespectful, but how is this a) important, and b) not a gross conflict of interest for CNN?? (stating the relationship does not remove the conflict...)
It's probably a decent film, but the fact that a less-well-known actress accomplished the same feat makes this point moot, not to mention the likes of Merryl Streep, etc.
By the way, was Sigourney Weaver considered A-List when Alien came out? Didn't that movie, and its sequels, make a bit of change??
She had plastic surgery?
She's garbage and her movies are garbage.
These numbers mean nothing. Why don't they count the number of tickets sold for and accurate assessment of what movies are the biggest draws throughout history. Ten years ago it didn't cost $100.00 to take a family of four to the movie with popcorn and drinks. I am sick of hearing about a new box office record every few months as ticket sales rise. The records are bogus.
I am in shock at some of the people leaving comments here. First of all, this is filed under "entertainment," so if you have an issue with CNN featuring this story under the "entertainment" umbrella, then YOU have issues. CNN is allowed to post stories from various categories of society.
Secondly, the history that was made is that "The Blind Side" is the first film that was marketed SOLELY on an actresses name alone. Any t.v. spot, any trailer you saw, any poster out there, the name "Sandra Bullock" is mentioned or is placed above the title. This means that she movie was marketed on her bankability alone and yes, it is, by Hollywood standards, a very big threshold that was crossed.
Next, why all the hate for Sandra? Is it because she doesn't start in a myriad of no-budget independent films about struggling single moms or prostitution? Not everyone aspires to follow the footsteps of Parker Posey or Tilda Swinton or Samantha Morton. Sandra managed to find a nice niche for herself and she's been quite successful at it. The majority of her films are romantic comedies and the majority of those films follow a certain formula, but you know what? It works. Some people go to the cinema in search of higher art. Others go because they want to laugh or be uplifted or cry or be scared and no one should be knocked because they favor a predictable romantic comedy. And if said romantic comedy is done well, then no one should be knocked for starring in it. I guarantee you that if we plucked any single hater from this board and dropped them in the lead role of "While You Were Sleeping" that they would bomb. Comedy isn't easy. It might not be high brow, but it ain't easy and Ms. Bullock makes it look effortless.
Every actor makes a wrong decision now and again. Even the almighty Meryl (whom I love as well).
Sandra Bullock has turned in some solid work over the years, even if some of those films left much to be desired. She was more than solid in her few scenes in "Crash." She was wonderful in "Infamous," and was terrific in the underrated "28 Days." "The Lake House" had issues, but she was quiet and unforced in that role. "Forces of Nature" was a mess, but her performance was multi layered in that film. She's not without merit. Even her turns in "Two Weeks Notice," "The Proposal" and "While You Were Sleeping" possessed an innocence that can't be forced or faked.
Give the lady some credit. She is a class act, she rarely insights drama or controversy, she is well respected among her peers and she turned in a great performance in "The Blind Side." Why can't we just leave it at that?
It must be so difficult to maintain such a level of dislike for so many things on a constant basis. I feel for you all.
I'm very happy for Sandra and feel that she's long overdue for her props. As for the inflation adjustment, the comparison would not even be close, even if you go back to 2000, since the difference is almost 83 million and counting.
Sandra Bullock is a great human being.
She is a great role model for young kids.
She is a terrific actor.
What a great movie and classy lady.
Dana, you are so right! While I agree that Sandra has made some fine movies, it is so sad how the media can take facts and figures out of context to promote any agenda they want.
Great lady, Great film. She was the first to donate $1 million for Katrina relief. I will never forget that. I wish her all the best. Watching her movies always makes me happy.
Congrats to Sandra. I've had a crush on her since "Love Potion #9". :-O
Have not seen the movie but obviously a lot of people like it. Sandra seems like a class act and quiet normal for Hollywood standards. Good for her. I think her husband is pretty cool too. As for the southern, zionistic Christians comment above . . . you've got to be kidding me. I didn't realize their were still people that ignorant about southerners. Come on this is 2010 not 1950.
dana January 6th, 2010 2:37 pm ET
This is an advertisement for Sandra and her movie disguised as crappy journalism, a technique used all over in the media these days. I like Sandra as an actress, but CNN this is so thinly veiled it's just sad for you.
You've got to be kidding me. CNN isn't the only media outlet reporting this (I've heard this reported several other places) and it is a fact. It's not like its made up.
Sandra Bullock is a Christian? Read that in the comments above. Where is there evidence of that in the World? I'm just asking because I've never seen or heard of her ever saying that about herself.
Sandra seems like a nice person and that she gets along well with a variety of people from rather diverse backgrounds. That, in and of itself, is something for which we can sing her praises. That said, she is an entertainer that acts. She isn't a great actress and has not been in any earth shattering films. Her best role was, in my opinion, in The Net. The Blindside is an excellent movie and the reason it is doing so well is because it has a male and female audience draw. It's female star is the biggest 'movie' star but it is a football movie. If it was just another movie like The Proposal or All About Steve (which could very well have been the worst movie I have ever seen albeit with a decent message), it wouldn't have made half the money it has. It is, however, a very good movie and she did an excellent job. She does not, however, deserve an Oscar nomination for the role... seriously.. are you kidding me?
Sandra is a very likeable human being and, in Hollywood these days, that is rare. I've always enjoyed he movies and literally laughed out loud in The Proposal and teared up a few times in The Blindside.
Whether or not this is a puff piece or a 'newsworthy' story, who really cares?
And.. by the way, Meryl Streep was abysmal in Mamma Mia! I wanted to be sick and/or walk out of that movie it was so horrid. It could have been excellent but she was WAY too old to be cast in that role. As a matter of fact, whoever did the casting for Mamma Mia! should never work again and should be on unemployment. If I did my job that poorly, I can assure you that I'd be fired in a New York minute. She was good (only good) in The Devil Wears Prada and in every other movie she has been in, she has portrayed the exact same character. Why people fawn all over her is beyond me.
Every time I see her, I just think of being stranded with her in an island for the rest of our lives...
Way to go Sandra! I love every movie you have ever been in! You're the Best! I agree with S. Callahan....when you honor God, he Blesses you! It was a wonderful heartwarming story, and you did an awesome job! Keep the great movies coming Sandra!
Sandra is a very down-to-earth person who is kind and loving. On top of that she happens to be a great actress! Sandra, you're perfect in every way!
Kate Winslet probably wasn't included because in '97 (when Titanic was released which is the film of hers I'm assuming you're referring to) she wasn't considered an A List Actress and because she wasn't the sole star that received top billing. Leonardo received equal billing. Sandy received sole top billing in "The Blind Side" (Tim was considered a co-star).
'dana' wrote what I thought. I like Sandra Bullock but this "article" is just idiotic. The ladies in my office were talking about this movie, and recommended it. But not one of them recommended others pay to watch Sandra Bullock. It's the movie that grossed $200 million, not the actress. Unreal.
Way to go girl!! I love Sandra Bullock for her natural beauty and her ability to perform as an outstanding actress......
Kudo's to you!
This is one woman that made it to the top without having to undress as much than some others that went as far as making a pornographic material to be at her level.
Congratulations....just thinking today that she is underated... Alot of the movies she chooses to do are movies that interest the general public and blue collar. Her movies don't have to be Oscar worthy, they are just enjoyable. They don't need to have critical acclaim...although many have, they are fun. Congratulations.
I believe with the Mr. or Mrs. Clout, in the movie industry, you can promote anyone to stardom.......but I will state without any hesitancy Sandra Bullock is equal to the best in the movie industry!
I knew Sandra when she was a student at East Carolina University. She is a great talent and just a super nice person.
that Steve movie was terrible...what was she thinking other than making $$$$
Good for this lady! I have always liked her as an actress. Her comedies are ACTUALLY funny and I think she is a free-spirited woman! Please do as Susan Sarandon and spend much to help others and fight WAR, Hunger, Abuse and all the rest – Hate!
Now this is not personal to any of these talented actresses. Don't you all think that IF WE Could Prioritize the NEEDS OF This World's Children, we'd have much of our Priorities Straightened OUT!
This was the best movie all year. I only get to the theatre once a year – and I must admit, this was totally worth seeing! Sandra deserves all the praise for this one!
movie stars are grossly overpaid.
Sandra Bullock is a great actress....when you see her movies, you come out feeling good and happy. Good for her, she deserves all of the praises and accolades. Sandra Bullock may be an actress, but she does not look plastic.
at a girl sandra !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good for Sandra. Can't believe how people are kind of ruthless regarding just a person doing her job. Above mentioned, Streep and Jolie comparison to Bullock is like comparing apples to oranges. They all do different types of movies, and even though I find Jolie flat on film I do recognize she has talent. Lets say "hurray-hurray" for all the gals that work hard AND make equal pay to their male counterparts. I personally like thrillers, generally speaking, but I have to say Sandra Bullock's films are always enjoyable. Who cares how much a show cost in 2000. I think the bottom line is Sandra is up there now, and maybe now she will get some more meatier roles, which I think she is more than capable of doing.
Squabbling over movie stars making that much money is obscene. Imagine how many people that would take care of if you added up all those millions, billions, etc. Movie stars are entertainment, some are better than others, some have good years and bad years, scandals and multiple marriages just like non-actors, except we just don't hear about them. So, on an entertainment point of view, good for Sandra, another woman who has proven she can make it, even if she is nice. Can you imagine? However, lets keep it in perspective.
I guess it's a good thing that WB didn't get it's first choice with Julia Roberts.
Big congrats to Sandra!!
I love Sandra and good for her. But, let's be honest, if Streep and Roberts were in their prime today, they'd be on top. Numbers are great, but look how much ticket prices have risen in the past 20 years.
These numbers should go by tickets sold and not by how much the picture earned. Salaries, overall production costs are nowhere near the same as they were. Sophie's Choice came out in 81 or 82. That's almost 30 years ago.
It's a nice story, but only semi factual.
Sandra is a beautiful person inside and out..Very classy witha big generous heart..She is a role model for all!!!!
what a good story. hey wait....you mean that people are interested in seeing a movie with real conservative values? what a concept!
Way to go Sandra! Glad you're an East Carolina University Pirate.
Sandra Bullock was great in this movie- I said when I came out of the movie that she should win a oscar for this movie- She did excellent playing ms. Tulle. I have watched it 2 times and will watch it again!
I think she is very talented and I love her work, but I believe this is a case where the story is what's selling.
major congrats Sandra.
That's great for Sandra Bullock! Now let's listen as everyone says the box office numbers were inflated.
Some people just need to stop hating this is a great accomplishment
don't know how the writer of this article got their numbers but i thought pretty woman grossed over $450 million worldwide.....or is that wrong? i thought the ocean's 11, 12, 13 movies each did over $200 million. it's gonna take a little more to convince me that sandra bullock (whom i happen to like) is a bigger box office draw than julia roberts (wom i don't like
Pretty women made money due to richard gear he was the main actor in the movie. Ocean 11 12 13 she was a supporting actress as well. Her star power alone did not push either movie to greatness. Where as she was the leading figure in this movie since it seemed mainly about her relationship with the athlete.
Less we forget all the bombs she has made, get it grip. It does not hurt that everything out right now stinks as a family friendly movie. maybe she just releases at the right time.
I would like for all the people on this thread that have made over 200 million dollars on any of their films and their acting abilities or any project for that matter, please stand up and take your recognition. I go to films for one reason and one reason only to escape, for a few hours you forget the world that you live in. I pick and choose the films that I go see, I personally like Sandra Bullock films. If you don't like Sandra Bullock please feel free not to attend her movies.
Sandra Bullock seems like a great person and I enjoy her movies. It's awesome when the one you're rooting for hits a home run. Congratulations!
To be fair, doesn't a movie ticket cost twice what it did in 2000?
You are all forgetting how gorgeously blessed she is also! Oh my, my! You are a doll Sandra!
I love Sandra and think she gets better and better. So much talent there that somewhat was glossed over in some of her light comedies earier in career. She's one of the beauties that will mature and age well, always getting the great movies offered to her.
Weird mangled stats makes for a weird mangled article. She did but didn't. She is, but isn't.
If Sandra's in it, it is worth watching. She is a very good actress.
i don't know how the writer of this article got their numbers but i thought pretty woman grossed over $450 million worldwide.....or is that wrong? i thought the ocean's 11, 12, 13 movies each did over $200 million. it's gonna take a little more to convince me that sandra bullock (whom i happen to like) is a bigger box office draw than julia roberts (wom i don't like)
Sandra doesn't have to act. Her beauty and personality shines through every appearance
I'm not Christian, and I was born and spent most of my life in LA. I think Bullock is a decent actress and her success does not detract from Meryl Streep's, Julia Roberts', or anybody else. Movies are a collaborative process and casting choices can be like sausage making. Given the large number of actors who get parts on appearance alone who no longer get parts once they age, the fact that Bullock is still working means that she is perceived as having acting talent.
You go girl, You've made me smile for years. Hope Floats! Congratulations, enjoy every penny you get, you're worth it. Just not the popcorn.
I look at this movie in a different way, there is so much God in it, the signs, the miracles, the love, the compassion she shows to others, the will and wit on this movie is AWESOME!! Kudos to everybody that participated on this movie, is not so much for the main actor, but everyone that made it possible. And to God be the glory.
The theme of the movie0-blindside played a huge role with people coming to see it. It was clean, inspiring, and showed that Christians can be played as normal people, not like the freaks that Hollywood has portratyed them. That said, Sandra B played a great role . . . and I wish she would do more. . .
Take note Hollywood, when you make clean movies that honor God, people will flock to see them and he'll honor you! You go girl!
It's it nice to see a highly sucessful actress who is content with how she looks – which aint too bad. She is my favorite actress and I always look forward to her movies!
Yay for Sandra!
Congratulations to Sandra Bullock. one of my favorite actresses. She truly is one of a kind.
Probably has more to do with the story than Sandra.
I keep thinking "Speed 2 - Cruise Control." Ugh.
So happy for Sandra!!! She is great.
Tony – agreed. Go VA!
Go Sandra !! I loved the movie . Thought it was refreshing to watch a good wholesome story on the big screen. I guess I'm a southern zionistic Christian ! Loved the movie and have always loved the actress. Would hang out with her and her husband any time.
She's great, but I still want my $8.50 back for Speed II.
I have always liked her movies. Now I go to the movies just because she's in it. God bless her for where she's gotten to.
Good for Sandra, she's cute. I liked her all the way back in Demolition Man.
She's not one of my favorite actresses, but i do like her, congrats! I do have to say that the movie, all about steve, was one of the dumbest movies i have ever seen, but i like every other movie she's been in! I really want to see,The blind side!
I rank Sandra Bullock right up there with Sally Fields and Meryl Streep, etc. She's a wonderful actress with a lot of "real" feel to her. No hollywood hype on her shirt tails. I think it's good for her and tells me that there are still people out there who see her accomplishments rather than the sparkle of hollywood. So she's an actress...celeb watchers disgust me. This is a trade folks and she is good at her trade. Very believable and very sincere in her performances. I am glad she is doing so well and would love to meet her in person. I wouldn't give two cents to meet the so called "hollywood" stricken celebs...just the ones that I think are down to Earth and grounded to the real world. They put their pants on one leg at a time just as I do. So I really wonder where all of the "nasty" posts are coming from. What's the point in trying to degrade her accomplishments?
I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but it's not about Sandra Bullock. It's about how captivating the story is and how well acted it was from everyone involved. There's much more to the movie's success than Sandra Bullock. I think it was a great movie, but no one I know of – even Sandra Bullock fans – has admitted that she was a draw for them to see the movie.
Sigh....Sandra Bullock....Be still my beating heart!
She's a good actress. This movie was her best for sure. But the other point is, the story itself is great. This is an inspiring, true story and people are going to see it for the message as well as the acting.
Great job. I think Meryl is dry, Julia is too bony and Angelina is... (not even going any further on that) I am rooting for Sandra, definitely a great lady...
I liked her back in the days of Demolition Man and Speed.
The post plastic surgery days have definately moved her from my A-list.
Still a good actress, but her looks just aren't cutting it anymore.
So, Sandra gets an award for being the first "popular" actress to lead a movie that grosses over $200M, even though a far less "popular" actress did it (and did it $40M better) eight years ago.
It's not news, its CNN.com.
Excellent work, Ms. Bullock!
1. Sandra Bullock is not a great actress. She had a couple (literally a couple) films where she did a good job; not a great job, just good. I don't even know why she is being mentioned in the same sentence as Meryl Streep.
2. The movie brought in the money, not the fact that it was Sandra Bullock. Let's be real. If you told me there is a film released, and its biggest star is Sandra Bullock, do you really think I will be in awe? No.
3. Were any of these monetary figures taking inflation into account? I didn't think so.
Mark C wrote "Hack actress who specializes in hack films. No surprise that the low-IQ American movie crowd buys tickets in droves."
Mark - WTF does that even mean? There's always someone who writes a similar comment on any forum that discusses any recent movie. I'm sorry are folks to document their reasons or always be looking for some "secret plot line", "complex story" always be wanting to compare and contrast symbolism in a movie to real life events or history for it to be an 'acceptable and intelligent" movie? Movie critics - both amateur and professional annoy the piss out of me. Leave people alone to enjoy what they want.
Go Sandra, go Sandra, go Sandra. Good job girl!
Her performances may not be of the same caliber as Meryl Streep's
but you come out of her movies feeling good, which is no small accomplishment in the depressing world in which we live. My daughter has watched Miss Congeniality and While You Were Sleeping countless times. They may not be art but they are engaging. Isn't entertainment the point of watching a movie?
I say anyone that can be successful in what they do for a living, good for them! It's so hard to be successful these days, why take away the little bit of light people get. Sandra Bullock obviously appeals to millions of people with her seemingly down-to-earth attitude. Her acting may be something to argue about but she hit the nail on the head this time around with "The Blind Side". Wonderful story that we could all take some notes from.
Congratulations to Sandra Bullock and all the others involved in bringing this movie to us. Bar none, it's one of the greatest movies of the last decade!
Total BS – really! An awful actress with an undeserved plug on CNN. The STORY was good.
That's wonderful! She is adorable, funny, and very talented. I think she really "made" this movie! It was fantastic. The part was made for her. Good for her and CONGRATULATIONS! She deserves all credit sent her way. Hope awards are coming her way, too. AND, I love her name!
I always thought Sandra Bullock was an A-class actress whose big movie role was yet to come. And now with "The Blind Side," it has. I could tell from the trailer that this may be the one for her.
She's always come off as one of the few actresses in Hollywood with class, intelligence and dignity.
Good luck at the awards shows, girl!
good to see a Virginia native doing so well.
I love Sandra, she is one of a kind actress. I 've never met her person and would love to someday. She deserves to be on top. She is a great actress and respectful one too. Well deserved. Woohoo Sandra!
Great to hear!!! The lady is a class act and a wonderful actress.
Covina says it all. It was the movie, the storyline, that made this movie not Sandra Bullock. Come on!
Oh, puhleeze! S.M. you don't even no what you're talking about. Sandra is the most talent person who is real. Yes, Mrs. Streep is a wonderful person also "But" when you do a movie at least have the cast that can act. In Devil Wears Prada the rest of the cast was so boring it made Mrs. Streep look as boring as they are. Ms Bullock knows how to pick and choose what to do and does it well. Remember her credits to T.V. speaks for it self!! Hello!!!!
Go Sandra, thats great. Its about time she gets a good movie to match her abilities. Can't wait to see it!
Bravo to Sandra! I've loved her ever since I saw "Speed," and she's never disappointed. While some of her movies weren't the best showcase for her talent, she's always been consistent. Plus, c'mon – she seems like your best friend. It's hard not to love her.
I think she's the best out there! Way to go Sandra!
Wait a moment...you are ONLY listing A-List actresses when a full figured, then no-name, Nia Vardalos, has posted "a remarkable $241.1 million domestically" and looks to stay atop the domestic box office draw by timewarnerwhatever's own estimations?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING? I think I'm done reading CNN's recap of how to make money for our parent company. You people call yourselves journalists. WOW, Ed Murrow rolling in his grave. THE HORROR!
Also, on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being a horrible actress and 10 being an amazing actress, Bullock is about a 3. When I think of Sandra Bullock, I think 'Demolition Man' and I think 'Speed'. You are going to sit there and tell me with a straight face that she is a good actress? Come on. the only people singing her praise are southern, zionistic Christians. What's the point of this? To make people go see this movie. As if I would want to spend $10+ on another Hollywood, 'Impoverished dumb black child saved by white people'. Disgusting, all of it. I guarantee you Michael Oher saw this movie, said it was great, and drove home alone, shaking his head the whole way.
I love it, Sandra beating out Angelina Jolie by almost $300 Million, Sandra has more talent and class in her pinky toe than Angelina ever will. I'm Brad Pitt's wang hasn't fallen off yet.
We were very happy for Sandra who gave, what should be, an award winning performance. Way to go Sandra!
She is one hot babe. It is a shame she got married.
I do like Sandra Bullock, but this has nothing to do with her. The Blind Side is just a Feel Good movie, that is why it is doing so well. Just as My Big Fat Greek Wedding.... was a feel good movie.
So Kate Winslet isn't considered an A list actress?
Don't get me wrong, I love Sandra, I just consider Kate top notch as well.
Hey, Mark C. Niiiice comment. I am not familiar with your movies. What would those be?
Classy lady in a real role. She nailed it. Would have been so easy to have been overdone.
This seems a good time for a quick reminder:
– Within reason, you can say anything you like about the celeb(s) mentioned in the blog entry on which you're commenting.
– You can disagree with other posters all you like, but namecalling, direct insults, etc. of other posters will not be allowed, and will not be published.
In short, if a poster calls a celeb names that you consider nasty or unwarranted, defend the celeb or argue your case. Don't attack the poster.
Thanks. Back to the discussion.
Whoop-di-doo! Do they adjust these millions for inflation? Why do they always speak of dollars and not ticket sales when it comes to movies? It's so so sad. I will praise an actor for his/er abilities but I will never praise the money that they make. Most movies stink anyway so why should we be paying anything over $5 for it.
Dana hit the nail on the head. This is disgusting.
She is awesome! I love her! Saw both "The Blind Side" and "The Proposal" and both were great.
Congratulations!!!! Sandra is one of my favorite actresses. She is funny and has a great sense of humor. I see Sandra moving in a positive direction not only in the celebrity world but as a lady with style and class. Keep doing what you're doing.....the sky is the limit. And I see you rising above. What a way to bring in a New Year. It's just the beginning for her. Hope all is well in her personal life as well.
Congratulaions ! Sandra...
Stubby – tell us what you really think...OY!
The movie – not the actress, brought in $200 Million. Though she was good, we know by her other movies that her talent didn't bring in the big bucks – THIS STORY did.
Way to go Sandra! Hope you win an award you so deserve. Its about time you get recognition. Congratulations!
I am so happy for Sandra, I saw the movie , and wish she win's an Oscar for her phenomenal performace.
Girl next door makes it big!!!! That should be the title. Never thought and never will think of Sandra in the same calibre as Roberts and Streep...but am happy shes doing well. I think her movies are naive and the acting....not so great.
Oh, puhleeze! Sandra Bullock is a skanky, talentless pig with terrible plastic surgery and no self-respect. To even mention her name in the same sentence as Meryl Streep is blasphemy. 9 out of every 10 movies Sandra does could or do go straight to video. What a terrible actress!
She is an awesome actress....she deserves it!
Were these figures adjusted for inflation? Movies were not $11 back in 2000, so please use accurate numbers when tabulating these kinds of accomplishments.
Good for Her!! Good job Sandy!
I agree, good for her. She is one of my favorite actresses.
She is the best!
The movie was AWESOME! Sandra did a excellent job.
So this means what? Is Streep's total gross inflation-adjusted? Was a comparison done on what other movies are/were out targeting a similar demographic at the same time for Blind Side, Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia?
Goes to show, when you honor God he blesses you back!
Get em Ms. Bullock!
She has always been under-rated. I've said it for years! You go girl!
Hack actress who specializes in hack films. No surprise that the low-IQ American movie crowd buys tickets in droves.
Way to go, Sandra!
It's about time Sandra was recognized for her always stellar performances. on top of everything, she is a real person.
Good for Sandra! She is a classy lady with a heart full of charity.
