Sandra Bullock makes history

testing captions

And the award goes to ... Sandra Bullock, for making history as the first A-list actress to push a movie past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office.

Her latest movie, “The Blind Side,” has been a steady little engine that could, grossing $208.5 million domestically since its November 20 debut, according to the trade publication Variety.

And it looks like it still has room to grow.

“[W]e’re not even done,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman told the trade magazine. “I think ‘Blind Side’ has another $30 million left." (Warner Bros., like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)

The Bullock-led drama is a box office draw that other top actresses like Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon and Julia Roberts haven’t been able to pull off.

Streep’s big hits, “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Mamma Mia,” both earned less than $150 million domestically, and Roberts’s “Erin Brockovich” grossed $125.6 million domestically in 2000.

While 2002’s “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” earned a remarkable $241.1 million domestically, it was an indie film led by the then-unknown Nia Vardalos.

In total, Bullock’s oeuvre has earned more than $1.72 billion at the domestic box office, according to Variety, which is none too shabby in comparison to her peers: Julia Roberts’s total career gross is $2.31 billion, Streep's is $1.54 billion  and Jolie's is $1.44 billion.

Some of you people are so funny. You go off on a tangent without going back to re-read what it is you are throwing a fit about. CNN was just issuing a statistic – not giving an opinion. Please read before you make a fool of yourself in print.

Okay now here is my opinion – I really like Sandra Bullock and will go see a movie just because she is in it.

Knew her in college and watched her perform in theatre there. Has always been a hardworking class act. Good for her! Movie was great and she played the part well. She looks better now than in college in the 80s.

We are entitled to our own opinion but this expressions of hate by some people are damaging to themselves. Actors have chosen this career, and whether we like it or not we have to admit they work very hard. It is true we like some better than others, some misbehave; granted they are not perfect; some are icons, and some are not; some are overrated and some are underrated; we complain about how high is their salary, however, I have a question: what were you doing when these actors (men or women) were working really hard to get where they are today or in a charity event, or visiting children in Africa, or visiting terminally ill children in a hospital or making a big donation, or sponsoring an event? What were you doing with your life while they were doing all this? Can we all see the positive in people and their efforts? Yes, we can. It is called good karma and good intentions.

Sandra pulled this one off in a big way. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen during Blindside!! I was literally riveted!! This may sound hokey but her character spoke to me during that movie and I'm not sure Streep or any of the others have every been able to speak in the same way!! It's not a matter of who is the better actress....I can't even imagine Streep or Jolie or Roberts being able to play the part. It was tailor made for Bullock!! Bravo Sandra!!

I guess what is bothering some people is that the article implies that Sandra Bullock must be a better actress than the others because a movie headed by her made more money than any led by them. Of course that makes no sense–example–My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Nia Vardalos, while charismatic and talented, is not an actress like Meryl Streep. Well, neither is Sandra Bullock. Can you imagine Sandra Bullock in Silkwood? (I can't even imagine her in the Cher part.) Or in last year's The Reader?

That said, good for Sandra Bullock for picking vehicles that suit her talents well. She's good in the movies she's in and she knows what appeals to the public. And she's charismatic. People want to like her, and they do.

I have wondered about plastic surgery too.

I don't really think it is Sandra Bullock that is making this movie a success. I think it has more to do with the story line. A true story of overcoming enormous obstacles that are in front of you will warm anybodys' heart. It is also perfect timing for a move like this to come out. I would have seen this movie with any leading lady, I did not see this movie because it was Sandra Bullock. I actually thought her southern draw was awful and at times embarrassing. Please don't take this as a shot at Sandra Bullock, I like her comedies and I liked her in Hope Floats, but I think she is getting too much credit for this movie.

I love Sandra Bullock and all her movies, but I don't understand the dismissive tone of the article concerning Nia Vardelos and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Those earnings for an independent movie with a not previously known lead actress should be all the more of a remarkable achievement, and should require the major studios and their actresses to bring in far nire before they're giving themselves pats on the back for their great success.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE! Stop your hating for just a second and let's go over this again: The "history" that was made was this: Sandra Bullock is the first actress to have a film cross $200M that was marketed SOLELY on her name. I am a HUGE Bullock fan, but this has nothing to do with that, or with her performance. The marketing machine behind "The Blind Side" was built around her name. Solo above the title, solo name residing on the posters and billboards, solo named mentioned in trailers and t.v. spots. "The Blind Side" is the first film to cross the $200M marker that was sold on the basis of ONE actresses name. This is what makes it unique. Yes, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and all the "Star Wars" films and "Titanic" all crossed $200M, but they were not marketed on a singular name, much less a solo actress carrying all of the weight. So yes, of course there were many, many other reasons that led to the success of "The Blind Side," but the point here is that this was a marketing feat. This is a big event for women in Hollywood and hopefully gives them a little more clout.

For those that think Sandra needs to tackle character driven roles and even the "accent factor," I suggest you check out "Infamous," in which she had a supporting role but turned in a wonderful, subtle performance as Harper Lee. Had the film not come out so soon after "Capote," you would have heard much more about it. It's a little gem that also stars Sigourney Weaver, Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig. Also try "28 Days" co-starring Viggo Mortenson. It was a studio release, but it felt like an indie. It was character driven and had your standard rehab drama cliches worked in, but there was great subversive humor and a huge heart, but strayed away from being overly schmaltzy.

Good for her and for all you you on this forum trashing her....what's your problem? don't trash her for making the movie Speed. I seemed to remember that Tom Hanks first starred in a TV sitcom called "Busom Buddies" where he dressed as a women to live in a certain apartment building. Look at him now. There are A LOT of actors that started off in TV or not Oscar worthy movies. Give it a break and stop being haters. It's bad on your stress level and gives you frown wrinkles.

...who has been kind enough to leave her face alone. (What happened to Nicole Kidman? She looks like she was kicked in the mouth by a horse! Ouch. Please, someone tell her.)

The real issue is, how much money is too much to make on one movie? A quarter billion? Is the entertainment industry out of control? Have we created monsters? How much money is too much to pay for a leading actor?

We, with the help of the parasitic media, have created these monsters with our silly idol worship and celebrity addiction, so I guess it is only fair we have to feed them.

    Food for thought.

I have always enjoyed Sandra's work. She never fails to deliver. Her comedic timing is spot-on, however she can also deliver in more serious roles. I especially enjoyed Blind Side, but I also enjoyed the romantic comedy, The Proposal. I love that she has not allowed herself to be typecast. Just consider some of her films: Speed, Crash, Miss Congeniality, 28 Weeks, The Lake House, Two Weeks Notice, Blind Side and the list goes on. She's the best and audiences love her because we know when we go to see a Bullock movie, she will deliver.

Sandra Bullock pulled in over 200 Million Dollars in one of the worst economies we've seen in years. And as for adjusting for inflation in regards to the other movies, inflation was less than 2% this year. So she still comes out on top. Don't understand the reasoning by not giving My Big Fat Greek Wedding its due, however, just because it was an indie film.

I loved the movie and so did everyone I know who went to see it. You'd have to be a stone hard person to not like it. I'm hoping it has the ripple effect of when Angelina began adopting older children, Americans began to think more about adopting more older children instead of babies. Babies get adopted so quickly, while older kids most often don't have a shot and they need the guidance and love the most. Improving society one little step at a time! Maybe we'll have less kids on the streets and a better society in the end! Hopeful for adoption of older kids in 2010!

Yes, movie prices have increased, but no one is mentioning that it also costs a WHOLE LOT MORE to make a movie now than even 10 yrs. ago. I don't know exactly how the math worked but here's a little "math" for you: Several actors in this movie have just been catapulted into the spotlight. Having an A-lister's name attached to a film is how it initially gets recognition, then it's media and word of mouth. So if nothing else, Sandra has just helped boost a bunch of careers and has also managed to stay alive in the shark infested waters of the entertainment business all while being a charitable human being. So you can hate her, love her, compare and contrast her – she did good and she will make sure all involved get their due.

To the person asking about the "Erin Brockovich" figures being adjusted for inflation, according to US Inflation Calculator, $125.60 in 2000 USD is still only worth $157.79 in 2009 USD. In other words, "The Blind Side" has still made more money domestically, even accounting for inflation.

Sandra was good in The Blind Side, which was unexpected since it was such a departure from the sometimes ditzy roles she plays. However, I really liked the movie because it was a great story. I wasn't a football fan and had never heard of Michael Oher before seeing the movie. Now I'm rooting for him. Where he came from and what he's accomplished with the help he received is fantastic. I'll be following his career. And what a way to start your professional NFL career, with a story about your life to date.

So is no one noticing the trend here? That it doesn't matter the star...its about the MOVIE! My Big Fat Greek Wedding was successful because it was a fun, fresh, comedy. That men and woman could enjoy. The same goes for The Blind Side. Men and Woman enjoy it. People so soon forget the horrible movie that also came out this year All About Eve...that no one saw. Because it was Horrible, not because Sandra Bullock was in it.

I can't be happier for Sandra BUllock. I NEVER comment on stories or blogs, but felt I had to give a huge online handclap to my sister Sandra. For the first time in life my husband and I both loved a movie. We both sat there on the verge of tears, laughter, just in awe of Sandra's performance. Seriously, everyone I have asked about this movie said they would go watch it again. I would too, but we can't take another day off work because we don't have a sitter. Any way, bottom line: Sandra needs an Oscar people. Don't hate. It's her moment to shine.

Sandra Bullock is entertaining but not stellar. She has broad audience appeal because she resembles the girl next door. That's how Julia Roberts started out. I still like watching her movies because she can be so goofy and silly; you can't help but laugh out loud!!

Dawn, it is heartening to know you went to HS with Sandra and that she was down to earth person as you know here. However, this does not reflect herself playing character roles and this is what the general public sees who doesn't know her personally.

I have never given much credit to Sandra Bullock as an actress, simply because she doesn't do much for me on screen. IMO, there are far better actresses out there, much more skilled than her, who are deserving of this award. For instance, Sigourney Weaver in Avatar or Meryl Streep for several movies. THESE actresses are outstanding actresses, have a history in acting in incredible films, have clout in Hollywood, long have earned their making-money-for-movies badge, where Sandra Bullock doesn't even come close.

A-lister? Not really. She is a known actress Hollywood but I would absolutely not categorize her as an A-lister.

I went to high school with Sandra - and it seems that she is still the same down to earth person she always was. I agree with the person who said it is ridiculas to degrade her as a person and actress. I just don't see the point. I am personally very happy for her success - meaning she is working, doing good things with her life and has a life outside of the hollywood scene. You have to respect the actors and actresses who don;t end up in the tabloid all of the time for acting like fools. She is a class act! Congrats Sandy!!

People need to go to boxofficemojo.com and see inflation adjusted dollars. The old stars destroyed these meaningless records. Julie Andrews was the lead in both the Sound of Music (over $1 Billion in today's numbers) and Mary Poppins ($575M). Not to mention Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra ($500M). Blind Side is not even in the top 100 (and does not have a real chance of getting there). Inflated ticket prices (not to mention the way more people in the US) is the real reason. It is a nice record for Sandra but that is all.

And I certainly wouldn't put so much emphasis on her, alone, drawing in the $$ for Blind Side. No way. There are fabulous actors in this movie that should take the credit just as much as her.

It is about time Sandy was recognized for her value and contributions to the industry. She had three wonderful movies in 2009, two of which struck gold. Too bad she has none coming out in 2010. As you can see on this blog, there are a lot of hateful people floating around the internet. Normally hurtful comments upset me. But some of the comments below were so absurd (Skank?????) they made me laugh out loud. If Sandy is a skank, what word would he use for Paris or Britney?

I have followed Sandy's career since 1989 and have loved almost all of her movies and performances. What makes her such a good actress is she makes her characters believable and sympathetic. She comes across as "being" a character, not just "pretending to be" a character.

As a person, she is like no one else in Hollywood. She gives regularly to charity, is gracious to her fans, is reportedly great to work with and for, does not have a typical celebrity ego, has not destroyed her life or career with some stupid scandal, and does the movies she wants to do rather than just trying to please the hard to please critics and Academy voters.

She is one of just two celebrities in the world that I would ever care to meet in person. The other is Gabrielle Miller from up here in Canada.

Sandra Bullock is great – like her a lot -

but don't people understand that gross money earned is an ever inflated number? We would be able to compare movies from different decades more acurately if number of tickets sold and not the amount of money grossed were reported. With movies costing twice as much for the public to view as they did several years ago, the studios (with media support) have reported overinflated numbers to create false "greatness." We are not comparing apples to apples and I am frustrated few people seem to recognize this.

There are so many comments, I hope I am not repeating, but what I think the beauty is of both Sandra and Nia's films, is the fact that they are sweet films. Not full of foul language and sex and naked people...just good story telling that shows that marriages can be good, racism can be erased, women OF A CERTAIN AGE (over 40) can look good and be attractive to us all, and family should still be the number one priority!! As a junior high school English teacher I can tell you firsthand that the breakdown of the American family is what is wrong with education, and therefore, the world today!

And just for the records – I AM a Sandra Bullock fan (she is my favorite) – she is VERY down to earth, funny, beautiful (inside and out) and a great actress. Who cares what and IF she has had plastic surgery wherever and whatever......who really hasn't this day in age??? Who cares what the movie is "about" or who starred in it – the fact of the matter is it brought in millions of dollars.......AND, Sandra Bullock DID make history as a result of it – regardless of what anyone negatively thinks about her – deal with it, for you can't change it! Obviously – there are more out there who believe in her and support her!

I LOVE Sandra Bullock. Have always been a big fan. I think she's amazingly talented.

However, I believe she is not the only reason–or even the biggest reason–this movie has done so well. The real story here is the fact that this SCRIPT, pretty atypical of Hollywood in many of its aspects, made big.

I believe word of mouth is what's propelled this movie. And what's propelled the word of mouth is the script–the fact that it's so feel-good and speaks to real people in the "fly-over" states. There are so few of these types of films–films that lift up rather than snub their noses at regular people (who, gasp, even have conservative values)–that when you happen upon one, you just want to tell everybody to see it. Sandra Bullock has been great in all her films, and she does an exceptional job in this one. But there are tons of phenomenal performances, from both males and females, that never see the 200 million dollar mark.

The type of story this is, combined with beloved Sandra Bullock and huge country star Tim McGraw (don't underestimate his power), all made this film successful.

All of you should remember one thing... just like art and music, actors create there own individual "Artistic" style. Meryl, Angelina, Julia, Kate, Sandra and so many others have their own separate box office appeal. This is what sets them apart from each other. Thank goodness! If they all had the same acting style, movies starring these actresses would become quite boring.

I have not seen "The Blind Side". From what I have heard from many of my friends who have seen it, it was a great movie. I like Sandra's "artistic" style so I'm sure she has done well with this film. so why not allow her some press. She deserves it just as much as the others do. There's no reason to think one artistic style is better than another. It's all likes/dislikes and opinion. That's why dollar amounts for comparison come into play.

I'd much rather hear about someone's creative achievements instead of how many lovers Tiger has tried to keep a secret from his wife.

Many of these comments are off topic. This award is for making money. It says nothing about Sandra Bullock's looks or acting skills, which are much more ambiguous than a dollar figure. The comparision between Sandra and other A-List actresses is a monetary comparison. So in that context, it is OK to mention her in the same breath with Meryl Streep. The comments about ticket price inflation and inflation generally are justified. The dollar amounts should be normalized to current year dollars for comparison on equal footing.

When box office numbers were released years (I'm talking '40's, '50's, 60's) ago, inflation wasn't so rampant from one year to the next as to ticket prices, so comparisons would be more realistic. But to say that a movie today makes $x dollars vs. a movie 20 years only making half of that and therefore didn't sell as well, well, it just doesn't compute.

I wish they tracked paid attendance, the way the sports folks do. Could you imagine the attendance rankings if a seat in a modern day corporate-john-named stadium was compared to say, Fenway Park 50 years ago? You would think one of those john's stadiums was a great place to go.

Maybe the folks that track album sales could start tracking actual movie attendance? I seem to recall that their system brought honesty to the counting of album sales.

What does "A-list actress to push a movie past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office" mean? Why isn't Natalie Portman considered the first? She was in all 3 recent Star Wars movies and they made a lot more than $200 million each. For that matter, you could go back to the original Star Wars trilogy and say that Carrie Fisher did this from 1977 to 1983 in non-inflation adjusted dollars (a lot more impressive than $200M in 2009 dollars).

OK, so I like Sandra. She's cute and funny. But you can't really compare her to Meryl Streep. Let's talk about Oscar count. Let's talk about difficult roles. Let's talk about carrying a movie without having lots of special effects to help you out. Not to mention being able to pull off difficult accents (Danish, Polish, Italian) in a realistic fashion.

To talk about Meryl Streep's career in terms of Mama Mia and Devil Wears Prada is a bit rediculous when one considers Out of Africa, Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, Kramer vs Kramer, etc.

I'd like to see Sandra step out of romantic comedies and action / suspense and try on something new (character driven period piece perhaps?).

The fair assessment of the TALENTS of an actress is the breadth and depth of their range, not neccessarily how much money they can make for the studio.

I agree with the Meryl Streep fans on this site. The woman is an un-rivaled talent. Just the myriad of the accents that she has perfected in numerous movies are enough to put this wanna-be to shame.

I mean really; "Sandra is such a good person" blah, blah. You people don't know her. And as far as this hack getting these kinds of box office numbers, let's be real . It was the subject matter and not Bullock that pulled in the numbers. You could have stuck anyone in there and the numbers would have been the same.

And no one wants to hear anymore fluff about how she's championing Jesse James to get custody of his kid and what a great human being this makes her. Uggh, give it a rest already.

When I think of Sandra Bullock, I think of "Speed" and "Demolition Man." When I think of Jim Carey, I think of "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb and Dumber." They both made their breaks in "lowly" roles, but they both moved beyond those roles and demonstrated versatility in their acting abilities that were not evident when the public first "met" them as performers.

When I think of Heath Ledger, I think of that god awful TV show "Roar" from the late 90s. But that doesn't mean he didn't still manage to build a great career culminating in one of the best on screen performances of all time.

If Kevin Bacon is worthy if six degrees of seperation, Meryl Streep's talent merits her a hundred degrees of seperation from Sandra Bullock. The success of Forrest Gump was as due to the charming black woman who sat on the bench and listened to Tom Hanks babbling on as the success of The Blind Side is due to Bullock's acting prowess – NOT AT ALL!!!
Consider this – the movie Speed was a success DESPITE two leads who can't act a lick. I would be more entertained watching 10 seconds of Julia in Erin B. than enduring a marathon of Sandra's oeuvre (ha ha ha)!!

If you don't agree with with the article just say so. Does that mean you have to resort to low-class name-calling and making derogatory remarks about her character and her body? She is just like everyone else is (or should)... trying to make her way the best she can. I personally can't stand Roberts or Streep, but I will not lower myself to your level. I am not a huge fan of Sandra, but I do think she is a good actress.

I think a better topic for discussion would be: Why do 'entertainers' (and I use the term loosely) have to have so many award shows to reaffirm themselves? Seriously, all they do is pretend to be real people. Why aren't the real heroes who hold down real jobs given awards for their efforts? How about the father who works 80 hour weeks so that he can put food on his table so his children can eat? How about the mothers who work non-stop to keep the house clean, get dinner on the table, chauffeur the kids around, do the shopping, laundry, etc... from the moment they wake up to when they go to bed?

'Entertainers' get their awards/rewards when they get paid.

It's probably a decent film, but the fact that a less-well-known actress accomplished the same feat makes this point moot, not to mention the likes of Merryl Streep, etc.

By the way, was Sigourney Weaver considered A-List when Alien came out? Didn't that movie, and its sequels, make a bit of change??

I am in shock at some of the people leaving comments here. First of all, this is filed under "entertainment," so if you have an issue with CNN featuring this story under the "entertainment" umbrella, then YOU have issues. CNN is allowed to post stories from various categories of society.

Secondly, the history that was made is that "The Blind Side" is the first film that was marketed SOLELY on an actresses name alone. Any t.v. spot, any trailer you saw, any poster out there, the name "Sandra Bullock" is mentioned or is placed above the title. This means that she movie was marketed on her bankability alone and yes, it is, by Hollywood standards, a very big threshold that was crossed.

Next, why all the hate for Sandra? Is it because she doesn't start in a myriad of no-budget independent films about struggling single moms or prostitution? Not everyone aspires to follow the footsteps of Parker Posey or Tilda Swinton or Samantha Morton. Sandra managed to find a nice niche for herself and she's been quite successful at it. The majority of her films are romantic comedies and the majority of those films follow a certain formula, but you know what? It works. Some people go to the cinema in search of higher art. Others go because they want to laugh or be uplifted or cry or be scared and no one should be knocked because they favor a predictable romantic comedy. And if said romantic comedy is done well, then no one should be knocked for starring in it. I guarantee you that if we plucked any single hater from this board and dropped them in the lead role of "While You Were Sleeping" that they would bomb. Comedy isn't easy. It might not be high brow, but it ain't easy and Ms. Bullock makes it look effortless.

Every actor makes a wrong decision now and again. Even the almighty Meryl (whom I love as well).

Sandra Bullock has turned in some solid work over the years, even if some of those films left much to be desired. She was more than solid in her few scenes in "Crash." She was wonderful in "Infamous," and was terrific in the underrated "28 Days." "The Lake House" had issues, but she was quiet and unforced in that role. "Forces of Nature" was a mess, but her performance was multi layered in that film. She's not without merit. Even her turns in "Two Weeks Notice," "The Proposal" and "While You Were Sleeping" possessed an innocence that can't be forced or faked.

Give the lady some credit. She is a class act, she rarely insights drama or controversy, she is well respected among her peers and she turned in a great performance in "The Blind Side." Why can't we just leave it at that?

It must be so difficult to maintain such a level of dislike for so many things on a constant basis. I feel for you all.

Sandra Bullock is a Christian? Read that in the comments above. Where is there evidence of that in the World? I'm just asking because I've never seen or heard of her ever saying that about herself.

Sandra seems like a nice person and that she gets along well with a variety of people from rather diverse backgrounds. That, in and of itself, is something for which we can sing her praises. That said, she is an entertainer that acts. She isn't a great actress and has not been in any earth shattering films. Her best role was, in my opinion, in The Net. The Blindside is an excellent movie and the reason it is doing so well is because it has a male and female audience draw. It's female star is the biggest 'movie' star but it is a football movie. If it was just another movie like The Proposal or All About Steve (which could very well have been the worst movie I have ever seen albeit with a decent message), it wouldn't have made half the money it has. It is, however, a very good movie and she did an excellent job. She does not, however, deserve an Oscar nomination for the role... seriously.. are you kidding me?

Sandra is a very likeable human being and, in Hollywood these days, that is rare. I've always enjoyed he movies and literally laughed out loud in The Proposal and teared up a few times in The Blindside.

Whether or not this is a puff piece or a 'newsworthy' story, who really cares?

And.. by the way, Meryl Streep was abysmal in Mamma Mia! I wanted to be sick and/or walk out of that movie it was so horrid. It could have been excellent but she was WAY too old to be cast in that role. As a matter of fact, whoever did the casting for Mamma Mia! should never work again and should be on unemployment. If I did my job that poorly, I can assure you that I'd be fired in a New York minute. She was good (only good) in The Devil Wears Prada and in every other movie she has been in, she has portrayed the exact same character. Why people fawn all over her is beyond me.

Kate Winslet probably wasn't included because in '97 (when Titanic was released which is the film of hers I'm assuming you're referring to) she wasn't considered an A List Actress and because she wasn't the sole star that received top billing. Leonardo received equal billing. Sandy received sole top billing in "The Blind Side" (Tim was considered a co-star).

'dana' wrote what I thought. I like Sandra Bullock but this "article" is just idiotic. The ladies in my office were talking about this movie, and recommended it. But not one of them recommended others pay to watch Sandra Bullock. It's the movie that grossed $200 million, not the actress. Unreal.

Her movies don't have to be Oscar worthy, they are just enjoyable. They don't need to have critical acclaim...although many have, they are fun. Congratulations.

Good for Sandra. Can't believe how people are kind of ruthless regarding just a person doing her job. Above mentioned, Streep and Jolie comparison to Bullock is like comparing apples to oranges. They all do different types of movies, and even though I find Jolie flat on film I do recognize she has talent. Lets say "hurray-hurray" for all the gals that work hard AND make equal pay to their male counterparts. I personally like thrillers, generally speaking, but I have to say Sandra Bullock's films are always enjoyable. Who cares how much a show cost in 2000. I think the bottom line is Sandra is up there now, and maybe now she will get some more meatier roles, which I think she is more than capable of doing.

Squabbling over movie stars making that much money is obscene. Imagine how many people that would take care of if you added up all those millions, billions, etc. Movie stars are entertainment, some are better than others, some have good years and bad years, scandals and multiple marriages just like non-actors, except we just don't hear about them. So, on an entertainment point of view, good for Sandra, another woman who has proven she can make it, even if she is nice. Can you imagine? However, lets keep it in perspective.

I love Sandra and good for her. But, let's be honest, if Streep and Roberts were in their prime today, they'd be on top. Numbers are great, but look how much ticket prices have risen in the past 20 years.

These numbers should go by tickets sold and not by how much the picture earned. Salaries, overall production costs are nowhere near the same as they were. Sophie's Choice came out in 81 or 82. That's almost 30 years ago.

It's a nice story, but only semi factual.

Pretty women made money due to richard gear he was the main actor in the movie. Ocean 11 12 13 she was a supporting actress as well. Her star power alone did not push either movie to greatness. Where as she was the leading figure in this movie since it seemed mainly about her relationship with the athlete.

I'm not Christian, and I was born and spent most of my life in LA. I think Bullock is a decent actress and her success does not detract from Meryl Streep's, Julia Roberts', or anybody else. Movies are a collaborative process and casting choices can be like sausage making. Given the large number of actors who get parts on appearance alone who no longer get parts once they age, the fact that Bullock is still working means that she is perceived as having acting talent.

I rank Sandra Bullock right up there with Sally Fields and Meryl Streep, etc. She's a wonderful actress with a lot of "real" feel to her. No hollywood hype on her shirt tails. I think it's good for her and tells me that there are still people out there who see her accomplishments rather than the sparkle of hollywood. So she's an actress...celeb watchers disgust me. This is a trade folks and she is good at her trade. Very believable and very sincere in her performances. I am glad she is doing so well and would love to meet her in person. I wouldn't give two cents to meet the so called "hollywood" stricken celebs...just the ones that I think are down to Earth and grounded to the real world. They put their pants on one leg at a time just as I do. So I really wonder where all of the "nasty" posts are coming from. What's the point in trying to degrade her accomplishments?

    2. The movie brought in the money, not the fact that it was Sandra Bullock. Let's be real. If you told me there is a film released, and its biggest star is Sandra Bullock, do you really think I will be in awe? No.

This seems a good time for a quick reminder:

      – Within reason, you can say anything you like about the celeb(s) mentioned in the blog entry on which you're commenting.

      – You can disagree with other posters all you like, but namecalling, direct insults, etc. of other posters will not be allowed, and will not be published.

In short, if a poster calls a celeb names that you consider nasty or unwarranted, defend the celeb or argue your case. Don't attack the poster.

Whoop-di-doo! Do they adjust these millions for inflation? Why do they always speak of dollars and not ticket sales when it comes to movies? It's so so sad. I will praise an actor for his/er abilities but I will never praise the money that they make. Most movies stink anyway so why should we be paying anything over $5 for it.

Congratulations!!!! Sandra is one of my favorite actresses. She is funny and has a great sense of humor. I see Sandra moving in a positive direction not only in the celebrity world but as a lady with style and class. Keep doing what you're doing.....the sky is the limit. And I see you rising above. What a way to bring in a New Year. It's just the beginning for her. Hope all is well in her personal life as well.

The movie – not the actress, brought in $200 Million. Though she was good, we know by her other movies that her talent didn't bring in the big bucks – THIS STORY did.

Girl next door makes it big!!!! That should be the title. Never thought and never will think of Sandra in the same calibre as Roberts and Streep...but am happy shes doing well. I think her movies are naive and the acting....not so great.

Oh, puhleeze! Sandra Bullock is a skanky, talentless pig with terrible plastic surgery and no self-respect. To even mention her name in the same sentence as Meryl Streep is blasphemy. 9 out of every 10 movies Sandra does could or do go straight to video. What a terrible actress!

Were these figures adjusted for inflation? Movies were not $11 back in 2000, so please use accurate numbers when tabulating these kinds of accomplishments.

So this means what? Is Streep's total gross inflation-adjusted? Was a comparison done on what other movies are/were out targeting a similar demographic at the same time for Blind Side, Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia?

This is an advertisement for Sandra and her movie disguised as crappy journalism, a technique used all over in the media these days. I like Sandra as an actress, but CNN this is so thinly veiled it's just sad for you.

Hack actress who specializes in hack films. No surprise that the low-IQ American movie crowd buys tickets in droves.
