Paul Shaffer on Kim Kardashian's ... assets

David Letterman's musical director, Paul Shaffer, hit Los Angeles Wednesday night as part of a tour to promote his new biography with the lengthy title "We'll Be Here For the Rest of Our Lives: A Swingin' Showbiz Saga." He co-wrote the book with David Ritz. It details his days on Broadway, his "Saturday Night Live" stint and his 27 years working with Letterman.

It's tough to be out promoting your book when your boss is embroiled in a sex scandal. Inevitably there will be questions regarding  the brouhaha, questions that go unanswered. Shaffer did say "I'm not allowed to even talk about that situation. It's like an ongoing legal proceeding and as such, you can't comment on it."

After 27 years on Letterman, you may think Shaffer has seen it all. Is there anybody he hasn't worked with throughout the years? Is there someone with whom he'd really like to collaborate? Yes, actually, and it may surprise you:

"I heard Kim Kardashian has a record deal. Can you get me a meeting with her agent? I would like to bring her in the studio and lay down some happening tracks and put my coffee right on the top of her a** and just leave it there."

Really, Paul?

Editor's Note: Several commenters believe this quote was lifted from Adam Carolla's podcast. It came from an interview Paul conducted with CNN producer Anita Bennett.

Wow does no-one have a sense of humour anymore, a harmless derriere joke about someone who is basically all back and no brain, and one of the most outstanding bandleaders of the last 30 years, the only musician who keeps the big band TV band experience alive, and he has to answer for it. NONSENSE. Check your entertainment history and since LA LA land is all about physicality, take a deep breath and relax; and those ladies who don't get it, fire up your vibrators and deal with it, you are enormously out of touch in 2009 SOCAL. I'm amazed at the criticism here, It's a fringe splinter group of people who you cross the street to avoid. WOW

Kelly, i also saw that Laker game and was again amazed how much airtime the KK's got ..for sitting at a game..And they didn't look happy or attractive. I cannot imagine the fascination America has with this family, but it is clearly going to end badly for them if they continue to act as irrationally as they do and chase the star image with no talent. I predict that marriage won't last long and end badly. As a footnote, Kim was on ET and said she thought Paul Schaefers comments were not offensive and would love to work with him or be on the Late Show. Not going to happen, I hope, but that again proves what PT Barnum said.."say what you want about me, just say it a lot and make sure to spell my name right"

Wow just saw Khloe and Kim slutting it up at the Laker game..BAD MAKEUP, Hacksaw noses,; they are truly unattractive. What was Lamar Odom thinking; a real piece of work the K family is. Please don't let your daughters buy into their questionable morality and gold diggin attitudes. These girls will be making homebreaking haedlines and getting paid to be immoral for years..Worse than porn stars, they seem to legitimize their pseudo celebrity. Paul Schaeffer was spot ON. America looks bad when they represent American womanhood; they drag US women back to a time when women's opinions weren't valued, because of their ignorance and bad behavior. Protect your daughters from them..PS Heather Locklear and Jack Wagner were there looking classy and aging well, AND SHE NEVER DID A PORN TAPE OR GOT NAKED. Kudos to classy hollywood, DOWN with ALL the KK's

I amazes me that there are so many people without a sense of humor, it is no wonder the world is so screwed up. Too many hypocrites walking around with sticks up their collective butts...OMG, I am sure it was a joke, but let’s lynch Paul for being a sexist and a pig...everyone is so judgemental anymore...let those without sin cast the first stone...

So True Steve and Billy, I'm a hardworking mom who finds NOW's agenda skewed and publicity driven; they have little to do with what most American women experience everyday. I have no use for them, particularly when they just use stories like this for Publicity. A typical lobby group, the kind that has fractured America over the last 2 decades

    October 26, 2009 at 2:07 pm | Report abuse |
  10. SteveR

And NOW has no right to criticize Letterman since there are no complaints from any staff members and most managers are well paid women. It was a workplace affair, exposed by an extortionist, when he was not even married. Jamming this agenda down America's throat is making NOW seem like a fringe group. Why don't they put their resources towards real abuses where women are actually asking for help. Just like KIM, NOW is doing it for the publicity and to aid fundraising..SAD and counterproductive

RIGHT Billy, I can't believe there are actually women who are actually defending someone who's entire lifestyle is demeaning to women. She is a stereotype for everything that is wrong with the objectification of women Paul was pointing it out in a funny way. Comparing this debate in any way to Polanski is just not right, but hey you called it..Someone's AGENDA is showing NOW

Really Debra, a comedian making a joke about a slut who aspires to be a slut is nothing like defending a child rapist, but in your Politically correct NOW world it is. That is the issue here. Paul was noting a distinct lack of talent and most americans call her slutty, and Polanski is a convicted rapist that most Americans (not I, his deal was broken by the judge and he'll be out within 90 days) want to see prosecuted again. The two issues couldn't be more distinct, but in muddling them together you show the agenda you are pushing. Most see it as flawed and counterproductive to continue to allow Hollywoods bizarre morality to infiltrate our homes with no one to stop it but the parents. I applaud Paul and his honesty humor and legacy. Let's see where KK ends up in 10 years..hard core porn I imagine!!

I'd have to guess that most of these fine readers are not aware of Paul Schaffer's HUGE list of accomplishments, mostly behind the scenes. I also guess that they are not familiar with his sense of humor. I love Kim Kardashian but I have not seen her movie. I hear that it's quite exciting. Can she act? I strongly doubt that Kim was offended and would actually be thrilled to work with Mr. Schaffer.

Don't kid yourself about the charity work. Most of the B list celebs work with charities that turn over less than 15% of the money raised , and salaries and honoriums make up the rest. Often times they get friends and family jobs and submit travel expenses for luxury resorts for their appearances. They do it merely for the publicity. It is always about them. you can see how good any given charity is by going to charitynavigator.org

I'm not saying he's perfect but the only reason it became public was a felony extortion attempt, so it was really his personal business forced on us through a criminal. Your last post belies these facts so you should do more research before you post that dave was cheating on his wife, he wasn't married I agree with the majority who believe that kids these days need honesty in their face warts and all. And yes, she is a trashy slut and I will share this entire blog with my kids tomorrow Sorry your lack of facts and self serving name calling when you feel it is right further dilutes your argument. steve r, billy and jackie( jackie especially) had some very wise advice/stories for handling their kids...
steve, your story about your daughters friend doing all these things at age 13( doing the britney panty free/showing and worse) ....it just makes me worry about our kids, my oldest is only 6, and it wont be long before ill probably hear similiar stories about her classmates..
my own dad taught me the guilt by assoication, judge by company you keep, it may not be right or correct( good kid, running w/ a rough crowd) but unfortunately it is true...you run w/ rowdy kids, even if you are not, gonna be labeled as such.
jackie, your story about your own mom/ wow...that was brave of her,( given the era when marilyn was a playboy model=and the "modesty" of back then,) but yes i can imagine once she died( not to mention the buzz about affair w/ prez kennedy) rang all too true.
i cant remember who said letting kids read the feedback, especially the unfavorable ones( saying kim/others are not great, they are tramps=flaunting their bodies and then fair game for any ridicule) is not that bad of an idea either... just my opinion and my 2 cents.

While I wouldn't call Kim a slut when with my younger cousins, nephews and nieces, I would tell them that if they did follow Kim's life choices, I wouldn't hang out with them anymore, and that I would probably be ashamed of them.

However, if they are old enough to understand the full nature of what Kim is doing, I would then say that yes, she is acting in a slutty way.

As for David Letterman, I have never held him up as a beacon of morality, and I never will. I always tell my younger friends and relatives who have talked about this subject that David Letterman is a normal man whose good and bad choices are magnified by his being a celebrity – that is to say, he makes bigger mistakes, but also has the chance to do bigger things in the name of good. I do say that he is a rather successful late-night show host.

And Paul Shaffer? The man has his own brand of humor, and whether or not it is in good taste is up to the listener. Awkward timing, maybe. Insensitive, maybe. But just like Dave, he's a human being.

In the end, what is important is how the people who are your friends, the people who have seen the real you, interact with you. Judging by the anecdotes here, Paul Shaffer and David Letterman at least have a good side...while Kim seems to be exactly what she is onscreen and off.

Call a spade a spade, but remember that the person you are debating with and the people we are talking about are all human beings. Balancing respect with the truth must always be foremost in our minds.

He did not make only one mistake. He admitted to sleeping with SEVERAL members of his staff over a period of YEARS! Not only is it wrong to have an extramarital affair, but he was sleeping with people that he is a direct supervisor to...in any other business he would be getting his butt sued off for harrassment. I am well aware of the fact that our children have access to the "worst parts of the internet." the point that I made was the we as parents do not have to contribute to it.
BTW I am 46 years old; have two grown children and a 17 year old. My grown children have degrees and my 17 is an honor student.
I hope that when I reach sage maturity of 60 that I have not developed so much wisdom that it will be okay to call a lady a tramp and then point out to my daughter that others do it too, so it must be okay. Raising your daughter with morals should not have to involve you calling other people names. You should be the example to her.

Wow, Steve R great story about your daughter. I think it's sad that some people believe they have the right to question parenting skills based on a blog. I've been faced with similar questions from my teens and although I try to justify some outrageous behavior as "just being kids" I believe that letting them read the venom on this blog is not a bad thing at all. It is a REAL WORLD exercise and very illuminating. I commend your posts for their insight and intelligence

There you go bashing someone's parenting skills again, do you know that there is"" another human being"" on the other side of this blog, you PC meanie. See you are even guilty of it as you deride it?? crazy logic And I think you live in some kind of perfect world where if the parents don't expose them to this stuff they won't ever see it ?? Crazy Most figure you are not a parent because it is so obvious in your inability to recognize that kids nowadays have access to and often use the worst parts of the internet. You can't keep them from it, so since almost every blog becomes a slamfest (you're the cretin who started this one) I believe it's good to use as a tool. You aren't seeing the point. They are going to read all sorts of awful stuff., but in this case you can use it as a weapon to help forge normalcy in an abnormal world. I imagine you are under age 30 with no kids..I also bet that if we we're to meet 20 years from now I bet you'd see it differently. Age brings wisdom despite most folks trying to avoid it.

A well centered 14-16 year old wouldn't be shocked to hear that Kim is being called a slut, they'd already know it. Perhaps you don't think anyone should be called a slut or tramp, but having lived 60 years I cam assure you they exist. Some girls who don't have any other choice and they do it to survive, Kim doesn't have that excuse..that makes her REALLY SLUTTY

Last month my 13 yr old daughter told me her best friend stopped wearing panties to school under her uniform and asked if that made her a slut. I said no that makes her a girl with no panties. The next day she told me her friend was purposely spreading her legs to give the boys a look;, I still didn't call her a slut. The next week she told me her friend was letting many boys take her behind a storage shed and look at her under her shirt and touch her privates for $3.00 each..END OF STORY SHE"S A SLUT AND YOU CAN"T HANG WITH HER ANYMORE, It's the real world ken, and believe me it's not as easy parenting today so we have to use the tools at our disposal, including calling a slut a slut. REAL WORLD BUDDY

Billy, Steve, Jackie and Ed: I do not feel that I am "superior" to anyone and was not trying to impress anyone so that I can "lean back in the glow" of my posts. I was merely trying to point out that if you want to teach your children how NOT to present themselves then there is a better way to do it then calling someone names. Desensitizing our children to the feelings of others is never a good thing. I see articles everyday about kids beating up other kids with no remorse. At some point you have to think maybe it has something to do with the fact that we are NOT teaching our children that on the other end of the comments we make; there is another human being.

Right on Steve R and Billy, forget the PC nonsense and call a tramp a tramp, and then laugh at them and instill the proper values through the giggles. i'm a 60 yr old mother of 10 and your method is good. when I was 16 my mom showed me the first issue of playboy and told me that Marilyn was a bad girl and would not have a good long life because she was just using her body to sell magazines and get paid. It didn't really register until Marilyn Monroe died a few years later, but it stuck with me
i used the same method with our kids, exposing them to everything, good and bad and now I have 10 great adults all over the country This guy Ken has no kids obviously, because once you have one the rules change. You can't hide the slime, so throw it in their face and discuss..WELL DONE

I agree with Billy and Ken has obviously never raised any well centered kids. A 14 year old will find these blogs on her own so I think its great that billy and his wife apparently monitor her and give good advice. It's so true that being PC is useless as a parent and trying to allow kids to see the slimy underside of celebrity is important when all the press focuses on their assets as being the key to happiness. It's only hands on parenting that exposes morally bankrupt people like the Kardashians to our youth that prevents them from buying into the media hype. By the way Ken, the media hype isn't going to go away because you posted today. Real parents in the real world have to deal with it everyday, and Billy's method is just what I did as well..and it works

Ken your post indicates a superior attitude that we see on the blogs all the time, the contrarian likes to argue guy that loves to read his stunning posts and lean back in the glow of his crt and feel better about how he has advice for parents and others that are obviously ruining their kids and he has the solution in a 200 word post. GET A LIFE DUDE..IT WAS A JOKE AND SHE IS A TRAMP AND IF I HAD A 14 YR OLD I'D let her know how most people in the real , non politically correct go to work and be a good person world works. It shows them that most people find her obnoxious and trampy and points them in the right direction..GOOD JOB BILLY, GO AWAY KEN

Billy: Since this is an "opinion" forum, I guess I do not have to keep my opinions to myself. As far as parenting goes, if you weren't patting yourself on the back for doing such an outstanding job; I would never have brought it up.
Furthermore, there is a difference between being PC and being a positive influence on others. You may raise your child anyway you want to, but I can turn the channel when she is the next unwed pregnant "tramp" on Jerry Springer because you taught her it wa sokay to be obnoxious to or about others choices.
I have never met David Letterman, but I guess having a great sense of humor is better than upholding the VOWS he took with his wife and betraying her over a period of SEVERAL years. Your completely correct. He really is a class act....much like yourself.

Ken, my daughter is well aware of what whores and tramps are and my point is to show her that most people blogging here agree Kim is as well, you are in the minority. Because We have such an open relationship with our daughter there is no chance she'll ever be on the end of comments posted here. Showing her the mean nasty side of the internet reinforces THAT IT IS NOT A REAL PLACE ONLY A SCARY PLACE IF USED WRONG. Letting her see what dozens of people think about Kim was a real eye opener for her and now she's not interested in her anymore. She's my youngest at 14 and the other 3 kids we raised are well adjusted working, in loving relationships, all married at least 6 years no divorces no drugs, no dui's and well centered so I don't really need your parenting advice.

But why are you so down on Letterman..."a Cretin", and Paul Schaeffer is one of the most talented studio musicians of our time. I guess you are anti celebrity, and one of the politically correct rangers that needs to feel superior to everyone and tell us how bad it is to watch tv, etc etc. Comment on the story, and stop just bashing other people's opinions. I'd like her to look up to people like letterman who made a mistake near the end of a great career rather than a tramp who has no career beyond her booty. When we're out my wife and I will point out when we think a woman or man is dressed in such a way to just get attention and we laugh together and strengthen the normal family bond as well as pointing her toward proper clothing choices for a 14 year old. In the real world of raising children being PC doesn't help, it just confuses them. point out the tramp losers and make fun of them and kids respond by acting more responsibly and realizing how shameful people like her are..and as far as letterman being a cretin, well i bet that opinion isn't shared by many..have you met him, I have and he is not only gracious but really sharp and funny

Billy: So you think it is a great idea to allow your daughter to read about men calling a women a "whore' and a "tramp" and then you will be explaining to her that this is acceptable behaviour? I agree that you should explain to your daughter that talent and not body type should assist you in your success, but to condone and contribute to that type of action is just immature. I don't belive that you would feel the same way if it was your daughter that was being villified. You sound like one of those people that blames the lady for wearing too short a dress after she is molested. But I guess it would be her fault, right?

first off no one actually sings anymore, their voices are digitally enhanced. All Kim Kardashain is known for is being a tramp and dating Reggie Bush, pretty convient she got back with him after her sister got married isn't it? All the Kardashians are constantly trying to one up each other, it's ridiculous. One gets pregnant than the other ruhes to the altar.

What's really funny here is that this whole comment thread has me laughing over how politically correct some people need to be.

Protecting Kim Kardashina's dignity is a losing battle at best. Paul's comment, while it may be in bad taste or too edgy for the more "genteel" people here, is right on the money. It's an observation on many levels about stardom and how people get there. Or, it can really be just as simple as a man observing that the woman got there for having a great backside and the willingness to use her body for fame. Either which way, It's hilarious to think that some feminists are actually defending Kim. And that many people simply did not get Paul's unsubtle joke.

KEN that is exactly why I'm letting my daughter read the posts that slam Kim, not only because she deserves it but because kids don't get to hear people sound off on these losers, only the glitter press idolizing them. Letterman and Schaeffer paid their dues, unlike Kim, and their indiscretions are just human nature, and I think their warts make them more human and interesting because it comes in the wake of their well earned fame, unlike the K family who have to go trampy just to get seen. I'd like my daughter to know the difference and see how almost everyone on this blog thinks Kim is a talentless tramp who doesn't deserve her notoriety until she actually does something to deserve it. Kim is a talentless faux celebrity, Letterman and Paul earned the right to comment due to their decades of hard work and achievement. That is the difference

All of you that are bagging on Ms. Kardashian for being famous only because she is famous; need to realize that the public is responsible for bringing her to this level of fame. If no one paid attention then we would not know who she is. To call her a whore or otherwise ridicule her is just a reflection of your own level (or lack of) class. If you don't like her then stop talking about her and watch her fade away. As for Paul; look at the company he keeps. It is ridiculous that anyone would idolize such a womanizing, disloyal cretin(David Letterman). His only regret is that he got caught. Remember, this has been going on for years. If he was truly regretful then his own conscienous would have prevented him from maintaining these "relationships" for so long or continuing on to new indescretions. We should try being the person we want our children to look up to instead of looking at public figures who are fallable as idols for the next generation.

BTW, Paul is one of the industries BEST musicians, it can not be argued. His talents extend way past simple keyboard playing. Even advanced keyboard playing, he directs some of the industries best musicians and those kind of guys don't follow someone year after year who doesn't have complete mastery of music.

so if he wants to joke about the kind of atrocities the music industry wants to constantly feed us, that is HIS world. I have to admit that I have never head Kim sing, but the notion that she is unbelievably talented as a singer and deserves a contract instead of her lame attempt on dancing with the stars and a homemade porn flick is somewhat far fetched. Real talent usually don't surface in such manners.

After the Rich old man died his wife married a former olympian who became a C list celeb on creepy game shows. They try to paw their way into jobs using sex and no talent and schaefer, who worked his whole life to create a body of great work is pointing out how Hollywood is short changing America with these types of "talent". Schaeffers comment was tongue in cheek and his legacy will live long after Kim is on her 5th husband. His music and his comedy work on SNL helped shape comedy through the 70's and 80's, and most kids don't get him these days because his humour is sublime and requires thought, but in this age of reality tv those that don't recognize the sacrifices a pioneer like shaeffer had to go through would not understand that he forged the way for losers like kim.
