I'm totally stunned. Chastity Bono was always a pretty girl. If becoming a man makes her happy, then I hope she has all the happiness in the world.

Why is this news worthy?

Freedom of self mutilation should be questioned for those who seek self gratification to change the extremes of their sexual adventures. Look at the late David Carradine. When will it all be considered unacceptable and were do you draw the line on were to cut?

And by the way, even if she does a sex change and calls herself a "he", it really is not the case biologically. Gender cannot truly be changed (i.e. the girl from Oregon who says she's a man and gave birth!!!) Pretty sick stuff. These people are pretty messed up. As a Cher fan for many years, ...the last 37 to be exact....and the parent of a gay daughter, I just want to say that I wish Chastity (Chaz) the best and that I am sure this decision was not taken lightly. As a parent my heart goes out to Cher, for as I know myself, this, although she may have accepted it out of love for Chas, it is in and of itself....the loss of a daughter. I am not offering condolences, mind you....I am offering love, support and friendship. May God be with the entire family as this takes place, may there be a peace come to Chaz that evidently she(he) has yet to have ever felt in life. I am so sorry that life was not what it should have been and that he has had to make such a drastic choice, as I know how society feels about these things. Peace be with you, Chaz. Why is this news? With everything else going on in the world – again, why is this important to any of us? Leslie, how do you feel about people who, while keeping their gender, transform their bodies with plastic surgery (a la Cher)? If God makes no mistakes, then these people are also abominations. By that rule, no one shouldn't dye their hair, get tattoos, get bikini waxes, shave or cut hair, or do anything that alters their body or their appearance in any way. I have known really cool people that have had that done and it comes from the inside as to why they are doing. Oh really God doesn't make mistakes? Tell that to all the people that are born with deformities or babies born with organ malfunctions and die shortly after birth or animals born with two heads.

God doesn't control everything, he gave us freedom to let nature and destiny take its course. Some people are born confused with gender. That is something that God created. He also created marijuana.

I can understand if someone feels like a man trapped in a woman's body or vice-versa – there are occasional mixups of gender and gender-identity in nature – but I don't understand how someone can mutilate their own body to APPEAR to be a different sex. I stress the word APPEAR because you won't have truly functioning male or female organs after a sex change. I'm happy with the "junk" I was born with and it matches my gender identity, so I guess I just can't begin to understand what these people are feeling.

I salute Chaz for having the courage to open himself to the kinds of prejudice and hate-speech so amply demonstrated by some of the commenters in order to educate the pubic and provide a model for those suffering as he did prior to making this difficult decision.

Chastity is a beautiful person and free to decide whatever she wants to do with her life and her body. I'm convinced that's a very though decision caused by many problems – intimate and emotional-
I hope she is in those hard times surrounded by kind people and good friend.
That's what she needs : Love.

I am thrilled that Chaz has decided to move forward with what I’m certain was a difficult decision to make…especially being in the public eye…It is certainly UNFORTUNATE that there are so many people that are so venomous with their words...Makes me wonder where their humanity and compassion is...and how do they apply it to their lives.

Try to be more charitable. And try to have at least one gay friend, that might assuage some of your intolerance. Why does everyone have to be the same? It's absurd.

To David, who quoted Corinthians: Isn't that the same part of the new testiment that went on about how it was bad to "fornicate"? There are times - especially when confronted with Bible Thumpers - when I wonder: "Who the heck thought this stuff up?!" Seriously, if everyone believed & followed all that slave-controlling propaganda, there wouldn't BE anyone, now, to be reading it. "No fornication" equals "no population". If not for us Sinners, the human race (or, at least, those who follow western religion) would've died out by now.

CHAZ! I want to tell you thank you for being so willing to put yourself in the eye of the public to raise awareness of ftm transgenders! I am going through my transition right now, and it is very inspirational to hear about this! and for all you people out there that say transgender people are freaks of nuts or not mentally stable, we get evaluated by 2 different therapists for several months to make sure this is what we really want and we are not insane. you need to open your minds! and realize not everyone lives in mayberry anymore!

Tolerance – What a bunch of crap. We should tolerated every freaky thing people claim to be and want to do to themselves. Kind of like people getting tattoos and looking like a coloring book, but them criticize people when they stare. In a world where anything goes, you will have people pushing the limits for acceptance. This isn't normal and quit trying shove it down our throats.

I love Chastity, well, now Chuck, will all my heart. She, um er, he will continue to make great strides in helping those with gender conflicts to be the real people they are, or think they are, um, want to be?, you know what I mean...

Maybe try picking up a book about world cultures one day. You might learn something. Tattooing has been around for CENTURIES in MANY different cultures. It is VERY normal. What is "baloney" is people like you who can't see beyond your own ignorance and hate.

Why is it that these so called Christians will throw Scripture in your face to justify their bigotry, but yet conveniently ignore the fact that Jesus Christ ministered to the "sinners"? And then they also ignore "judge not lest you be judged", "he who is without sin shall cast the first stone", and "love the sinner, but not the sin"?

This is "newsworthy" to help all of those non-famous children/adults know that the feelings they have are NORMAL for them and they should (if they want to and are able to) have the body they are comfortable in. Parents open your eyes to who your children really are, don't put your own dated beliefs on your kids, they will show you in many ways how unhappy they are,sometimes with tragic results.
