Oprah Reacts to Newsweek Article

Posted: 07:11 PM ET

Have you taken a look at the latest Newsweek cover? Oprah graces it and the picture isn't terribly flattering. Neither is the accompanying article.

The world is full of Oprah fans and detractors. There are people who absolutely love her. They literally buy every word that flies from her mouth. She is the talk show host with the Midas touch.  A wave of her wand, an endorsement from Oprah turns a product into a  gold mine, whether it's a book or a few of her "favorite things".

But as can be expected not everyone is a fan. Her detractors will tell you that she's somehow managed to take unsavory topics, similar to those on the Jerry Springer and Maury Povich  shows and serve them up in tasty bites, so the viewer doesn't feel like they bellied up to the buffet of life and stuffed themselves silly.

This Newsweek article acknowledges the talk queen's successes and what it deems her failures;  mainly topics that touch on health, medical treatments and research.

Oprah's reaction?

"For 23 years, my show has presented thousands of topics that reflect the human experience, including doctors' medical advice and personal health stories that have prompted conversations between our audience members and their health care providers. I trust the viewers, and I know that they are smart and discerning enough to seek out medical opinions to determine what may be best for them."
– Oprah Winfrey

I think, in typical American fashion, we create our heroes, then destroy them. It's our national sport.

Lynn Ellis   June 3rd, 2009 9:23 pm ET

I will take Oprah over someone like Angelina Jolie any day.

The flip side of hero worship in America is hate. With much fame comes much criticism and a burning desire to tear down. Oprah has walked this tight rope before, and can navigate her way around the land mines of fame, fortune and foolishness.

Couldn't care less....Not an Oprah fan.

VICKI   June 4th, 2009 9:34 am ET

I TRY & CATCH HER SHOW WHEN I CAN, AND SOME OF THEM ARE FLUFFY, SOME ARE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, AND SOME ARE WONDERFUL. DR OZ IS A GREAT DOCTOR, AND HE PUTS IT OUT THERE FOR EVERYONE, AND GETS PEOPLE TO HAVE DIALOGS WITH THEIR OWN PHYSICIANS, AND THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. SOME OF HER SHOWS ARE INFORMATIVE, AND SOME ARE NOT. CAN'T PLEASE ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME. I WON'T GO OUT AND BUY SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE SHE HIGHLIGHTED IT ON HER SHOW, BUT IT'S INTERESTING, BECAUSE SHE IS ON THE CUTTING EDGE SOME OF THE TIME.

0prah is wacko and can´t take her own advice. She is silly, deranged, strangled by Tom Cruise, rumored to be a lessie, has no man or woman, children of her own, involved in so many scandals, but there are people for every idol out there, that is why she says she trust her viewers, she preys on ignorant, co-dependant people, of course she will be succesful in America!

I was a loyal Oprah fan until the fiasco of her pushing a political candidate on her show...I felt she showed bad taste and poor judgement when pushing her candidate on her audience and fans. Star power is a great thing until it is used to push a personal agenda such as the next president.

NOT A FAN ANYMORE

Sue   June 4th, 2009 11:30 am ET

She is like a sister to me, sometimes she's very annoying and sometimes I love her!

She's a smart lady with good instincts. In this male dominated world what could be more annoying? LOL

LBW   June 4th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

I'm pretty tired of her. She is rich, but she is not all that. She says she is not prejudiced, but she won't donate a penny to the people of Appalachia. She stands before people with her hands out like she is Jesus himself. Yep, pretty tired of her.

Congratulations to Newsweek for confronting Winfrey and the dangerous nonsense that passes for health advice on her show.

This kind of woo-woo baloney is becoming an epidemic in the U. S. We need more of the media to speak out against it.

fan just continue to put others first and u shall receive all the negative comments are just haters oprah thanks for introducing president obama.

Timmdogg   June 5th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

No matter if you like Oprah or not, the problem, she's at least doing something for the American people. People are so quick to judge her, yet what have they done to help others? I may not agree with some of the things on her show – but the woman is doing something and that's way better than being belittling and not doing a dam thing but wasting space on this planet! Some of these 'so-called" whiners are the same people that voted for the Bush and look what he did to the country! Plus, if you need to look at OPRAH as a hero, then you must not have had a positive life. I would think must people look up to their parents as the most influential people in the world? Make out a niche for your own life – don't hate her because she chooses to help other whether you like it or not. Stop hating!

tina   June 5th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

Oprah's a hasbeen!

Kathryn   June 5th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

LBW....couldn't agree with you more. As much homelessness and starvation as we STILL have in our country....what's up with building a school in AFRICA? Doesn't charity begin at home?...hmmmm

mel   June 5th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

Leave oprah alone. She can promote anything she wants on her show...its America and its her freedom to do so n our RIGHT to chose if we wanna follow her advice. N so what if she opened a school in Africa?...its HER money! We live in America..since when is ok to tell people what to say or how to spend their money...this is foolish..let the woman live.

It's about time someone wrote something critical of Oprah. Anytime someone takes on a 'godlike' persona as she has, it frightens me. The way she exploited Tom Cruise's misshaps on her show (I'm no fan of his), was really low, as pointed out by Rosie O'Donnell.
If she is really interested in 'giving', why does she advertise what she does? It's the whole left hand, right hand thing, you know? She's looking for credit, adoration..........
