'American Way' mystery singer hits hard

Posted: 09:31 PM ET

The song is a down and dirty lament about crooked fat cats and companies with their hands out, waiting for a bailout, while the American public foots the bill and tries to make ends meet the old-fashioned way.

In the music video, fuzzed-out guitars and woozy vocals play over a bleak montage of news clips, stock photos and newspaper headlines:

"Grab a hammer, go to work, you owe money.

That's what my daddy used to say.

Back then, you kept your own motor runnin' - ha!

It's the American way."

By the end of the video, you still don't know who the singer is. He isn't shown. But somebody is really ticked off - and it's none other than Ronnie Dunn, the fair-haired half of the country music duo Brooks and Dunn.

The song, called "American Way," was penned entirely by Dunn - and that's pretty much all we know. His people ain't talkin,' and probably with good reason.

Brooks and Dunn have made a long and distinguished career of crafting highly polished, highly commercial songs about how great it is to be an American. This little ditty isn't so optimistic, and its raw, gritty sound would be more at home with a rock band than with one-half of the most successful country duo of all time.

It's neither pro-Republican, nor pro-Democrat. Instead, it's anti-corruption, anti-bailout and anti-sending jobs to Mexico. And it's the most intriguing stuff Dunn has ever written. In a music business where veteran artists are struggling to remain relevant, Ronnie Dunn has just found a way to do it.

lstroud   April 22nd, 2009 11:01 pm ET

all the whiners should take a listen.
well done, Ronnie.

nothanks   April 22nd, 2009 11:11 pm ET

Uhhh... so this great video, Denise.... it's really popular on the internet... so popular it's not anywhere on the internet, certianly not on youtube or anything in the top 10 results of google for "American Way", though there are several other bands that probably appreciate the search results.

Soooo.... why the blog entry? Especially since you write it like everyony already knows the song. Eve if the song is great, it isn't popular yet, so don't act like it's a runaway mystery hit, and speaking of mystery.... you pretend there's a mystery identity for a video no one has even seen in the first paragraph and then you reveal who it is in the 2nd paragraph? WHAT??? DON'T BE A SHILL.

This is a glorified ad wrapped up in a faux blog post. Get away from the internet we don't want plants and shills, we want real opinions and real content.

copywrite infringement......thats what its called!
We artist today barely make a living...maybe not Ronnie in this case, but what if it wasn't his lyrics? If it were yours?
Same thing applies to music downloads....
This guy needs to be prosecuted.

How perfect that a multi-millionaire who has made his living from the entertainment industry is singing about how the "common man" needs to roll up his sleeves and work to earn a living.

He sings that he doesn't have money in the stock market? Yeah, right... Brooks & Dunn are one of Forbes top grossing country acts, and ol' Ronnie has those millions just stuffed in mason jars in the back yard.

The reason for major problem in Nigeria govt,is b'cos many local govt fail to perform their duties.Responsibilities are burdened either on the federal or state govt. The basic interest the grassroot arms of the govt has,is to inflict irrelevant levy on the local dwellers so as to grow pot. belly.

John Clark   April 23rd, 2009 6:21 am ET

I'm surprsed Obama didn't say it was his idea. Way to go Ronnie.

Waylan Loyd   April 23rd, 2009 8:27 am ET

That is awesome,,I hope other singer-song writers do the same.We need all the help we can get.

Jeb Stuart   April 23rd, 2009 8:33 am ET

Way to go, John Clark. You proved beerzie boy's comments exactly. I'm always amused by the complete lack of intelligence so happily trotted out by SOME of the jingoist parrots of the far right.

Right. All of this economic mess just started in January...

Navyguy   April 23rd, 2009 9:04 am ET

Man-oh-man, the OBAMAUNISTS on this site can't even give Ronnie Dunn a compliment on song. It always turns political. What's next OBAMAUNISTS, gonna start in on the Gerber baby?

This world is in such a state of confusion and destruction and to save our selves from gloom and doom better start taking better care of eachother, bec/evidently the government and all those with the supposed power sure as hell aren't – thank you

In these times if you have a job you are lucky.
It's great to sing about our problems here in the US but if we dont do something about it it becomes worthless like the american dollar instead of cleaning others houses we should be cleaning our own starting with the Government set term limits like the President has two terms of four years and you move on with a total gross income of 150,000 per year. A Government for the people by the people. Get rid of the free loaders thoes that have been there for more than eight years in any branch of elected offical. Look it up and see how many there are how much they make and do something about it.

How much do you want to bet this "anonymous video" has a promotional budget that could pay off most people's mortgage?

Typical common working man cliche sung by a guy who has a fleet of gas guzzling SUV's parked behind his 20,000 square foot mansion and a PR staff to make sure we know he's never forgotten his humble roots.

I love it how peope with money can tell the rest of us how we should go back to the American way. It is also amazing to make how country artists seem to always know how America should be run. Oh, correct me if I am wrong, but dont we see and hear country music stars on truck commercials all the time. That just seems a little hypocrytical to me. Trust me, they are no better than anybody else.....let's run to the person who can give us a paycheck...even if it is the auto industry.

kaylee   April 23rd, 2009 10:03 am ET

If he was proud of the song and what it stood for, he would come forward and say, "yeah, this song is mine." Instead, he stands back like a coward fearing that he might lose some fans(i.e. Money) due to this. Yeah, that's the way...I will speak my mind, but will not say it is me. I think that is a little childish. PUBLICITY STUNT

Julie in Nashville   April 23rd, 2009 10:23 am ET

Is there some law I don't know about against making money in the entertainment industry?

Why is it so hard to accept the success of some people...he has not become successful for the purposes of spiting those who have not....let the guy sing.

Greg Shell   April 28th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

Why is it so often that the people with money start lecturing those without moeny on how to tighten up their belts and live on crumbs?

"There is no bread? Why don't they just scrape up the crumbs we let fall off our cake?"

mark   April 28th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

I think it says alot. All those fat cats need to get off their fat backs and try to get a real job in America, and see why they are paid too much to sit on their cans to do nothing but kill America for nothing more than money.

They are CROOKS, CHEATS, ROBBERS, and they should be the ones giving the American people stimulas checks not the Gov. After all they owe all of us, for all the stealing they have been doing for so long.

Bren   April 29th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

It WAS written by Ronnie Dunn and one of his guitar players, Lou Toomey – and it is all about the money. These guys don't do anything that isn't for the money. They stay as high and wild as any of the musicians in the 'rock' or other genres – they just do it with a little more twang and hypocrasy.

JennyT   May 4th, 2009 8:25 pm ET

Paul, Ray g, nothanks and Noah, you all sound envious of Mr Dunn. I'm sure he would have been successful in any career he chose. Same for Greg Shell....sour grapes. Kaylee and Bren, didn't get Ronnie's autograph or a meet n greet at a show? Such severe and often anonymous criticism is often a by-product of envy, low self esteem or rejection. I don't think Ronnie has ever denied this song, or it's meaning. I'm sure he's as passionate about what this song says as any he's ever written, probably more so. It's an anthem really of our times, and he's as entitled as any American to write it, sing it and put it out there, the same as you're entitled to disagree. What do you not like? Him or the message? Bren, as far as these guys partying as hard as 'rock' musicians.......work hard, play hard, that's what MY daddy used to say............. That's the American Way :-)

Dani D   May 26th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

He's not saying it's his because he is B&D not just Ronnie. Trust me.... he is proud. As he should be!!!!!
