April 22, 2009 'American Way' mystery singer hits hardPosted: 09:31 PM ET
The song is a down and dirty lament about crooked fat cats and companies with their hands out, waiting for a bailout, while the American public foots the bill and tries to make ends meet the old-fashioned way. In the music video, fuzzed-out guitars and woozy vocals play over a bleak montage of news clips, stock photos and newspaper headlines: "Grab a hammer, go to work, you owe money.
That's what my daddy used to say. Back then, you kept your own motor runnin' - ha! It's the American way."
By the end of the video, you still don't know who the singer is. He isn't shown. But somebody is really ticked off - and it's none other than Ronnie Dunn, the fair-haired half of the country music duo Brooks and Dunn. The song, called "American Way," was penned entirely by Dunn - and that's pretty much all we know. His people ain't talkin,' and probably with good reason. Brooks and Dunn have made a long and distinguished career of crafting highly polished, highly commercial songs about how great it is to be an American. This little ditty isn't so optimistic, and its raw, gritty sound would be more at home with a rock band than with one-half of the most successful country duo of all time. It's neither pro-Republican, nor pro-Democrat. Instead, it's anti-corruption, anti-bailout and anti-sending jobs to Mexico. And it's the most intriguing stuff Dunn has ever written. In a music business where veteran artists are struggling to remain relevant, Ronnie Dunn has just found a way to do it. – Denise Quan, CNN Entertainment Producer Filed under: music
