Top 7: And so the movie (night) endsTonight's "American Idol" was heavy on the ballads and light on the wow factor. Did Quentin Tarantino make the grade as a mentor? Who do you think turned in a magical performance? Join us Wednesday night to find out who has sung his or her last note on the show. Post your comments below or head over to iReport to share videos of your reaction to tonight's performances. Your comment or video could appear on CNN! – Lisa Respers France, CNN.com writer Top 7: Bloom is off Lil Rounds' 'Rose'Dear Lil, ![]() I'm afraid it's over between you and me. You've disappointed me so much in the past, and tonight was make or break time. When I heard the theme, I thought "Yes! Lil will do some Whitney Houston, and it will all be OK." But you didn't do that, Lil. You chose Bette Midler's "The Rose," and it was too little, too late for me. It's not you, Lil. It's me. I just can't keep hanging on waiting for the old Lil to come back to me. I even fell in love with your kids! And your trying to justify your choice of song to the judges didn't sway me either. Some day you'll look back on this and know that I was right. Top 7: Kris Allen does it 'Once'Open your eyes Kris! ![]() "Falling Slowly" from "Once" is a very pretty song, and Kris did it justice, despite those closed eyes. He's all spikey-haired intensity, and I'm glad he opted not to play an instrument. When you have a great voice, isn't that all you really need? Top 7: Danny Gokey's 'Endless Love'Danny sans glasses. Me likey. ![]() "Endless Love" is one of my absolute favorite songs. But you have to be so careful with a classic. The potential to really stink up the joint is so prevalent. It didn't reek, but it wasn't amazing either. It felt very karaoke for me. I also didn't need the subtle reference from Simon about Danny's personal tragedy. We get it. It's sad, but let's move on to the performing, shall we? Top 7: Matt Giraud shows some loveMatt liked working with Quentin, and that Justin Timberlake hat was back during rehearsal. ![]() Quentin is killing me with his direction. "Do the gravelly thing?" Seriously?!?!? Bryan Adams is getting loads of love tonight, and Matt sings "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" from the movie "Don Juan DeMarco." Perhaps Scott has ruined the whole piano performance for me this season cause I was B-O-R-E-D. Matt has a great voice, and I wish he would wow me again. Top 7: Adam Lambert is wild!Adam, please have some pity. ![]() Your fellow contestants are begging you to. Well, if they aren't, I am. Adam has completely taken over this competition, and his "Born To Be Wild" was another performance that people are going to be talking about around the water cooler tomorrow. You can tell that Adam just doesn't even care anymore. He's doing him, love it or hate it. He is going to screech, wring out every note and rock across the stage all the way to the finals. Top 7: Anoop Desai slows it down againAnoop clearly never met a ballad he didn't like. ![]() Quentin advises Noop Dogg to "rough up" Bryan Adams' "Everything I Do, I Do It for You." While I get that the director was trying to have Anoop evoke more emotion, Quentin's attempt to show him what he meant made me think "Q" was having some digestive issues. I like Noop Dogg singing the slow songs. Stick to the love songs, Noop, and please never venture back into Usher, dance music territory again. You've found your niche, now work it. Top 7: Allison Iraheta tries not to miss a thingI had no idea Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" was in the film "Armageddon." ![]() Allison started out a tad bit rough, and I think I heard a few jacked-up notes. I have been a fan of hers since Day One, but that performance left something to be desired for me. With Allison being the little rocker chick, I expected her to work that song overtime from the first note to the last and she didn't. Paula and Simon loved it though. I wonder how they decided which two judges get to comment on which contestants? Top 7: Quentin Tarantino directs the gangUggg. I forgot how ugly Quentin's shirt was the first time he was on the show. ![]() He mentored and he gets to watch from the audience. You can tell he is thrilled! Top 7: The show must go onThe closer we get to crowning the next "American Idol," the more I live, live, live for Tuesday nights. ![]() Tonight is no exception, especially because of two magic words: Quentin Tarantino. I can't wait to see how his participation in the show is going to play out because when I think music, he is not the first "Q" that comes to mind. Actually, he probably would not come to mind at all. Granted, the theme of tonight is music from the movies and his films have great soundtracks, but does that qualify him to be on the show? I know he reportedly is a HUGE "Idol" fan, but so am I. So when do I get my shot as a guest mentor? I just hope he rises to the occasion. All I remember from his guest-judge stint back in 2004 during season three were his spastic hand movements and major geekdom. Ryan refers to Quentin as a "legend." I so don't remember him achieving legendary status but if Seacrest declares it, it must be so. OK, I take it back because he also referred to Paula as "hot," Kara as "provocative" and Simon as "legendary." And the judges are going to talk two at a time to save time and keep the show from running long again? Foolishness! –Lisa Respers France, CNN.com writer |
