Top 8: Who were your favorites?

The night yielded a few surprises: Scott abandoned the piano, and Adam changed his hair yet again.

But some things remained the same. Lil didn't deliver to expectations, and Allison turned in a performance way more mature than her years.

So what did you think? Was it all you hoped it would be? Don't forget to join us Wednesday night for the results show.

Top 8: Adam Lambert has me mad for him

Adam loved playing dress up as a child.

Adam Lambert

That explains so much when it comes to his flair for the dramatic.

Adam sang the mess out of Tears for Fears' "Mad World." He got a standing ovation from Simon, and he more than deserved it.

His rendition was SICK! That boy has an incredible voice, and I will even forgive him his boy-band hair and look tonight, which I guess would be cute to me if I was a tad bit younger.

Adam seems like he is leaving everyone else in the dust in this competition. He was by far the best.

Top 8: Matt Giraud takes a part-time love

Matt knows he is dead wrong for that Justin Timberlake hat!

Matt Giraud

He performs Stevie Wonder's "Part-Time Lover," and I guess I should have been blown away, especially since I am a huge Justin Timberlake fan and that seemed to be who he was channeling with the high notes, moves and the brim.

It was good, but not incredible like I feel his voice is capable of given his range. And it seemed like he was trying too hard to really work it out with a little movement.

I swear I thought he was going to do a Michael Jackson back leg cross and toss of the hat to the side. Just be you Matt.

Top 8: Allison Iraheta made me love her

The little rocker chick is also a bit of a torch singer.

Allison Iraheta

So far, I think she's been the smartest in terms of song choice. Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" was perfect for her voice, and she managed to pull it off despite practically being a toddler.

I tried not to be freaked out by the fact that she was singing such a sultry song. It just seems wrong on so many levels to have  a teenager portraying all the passionate longing and angst that makes that song so great.

Allison pulled it off, though, and good for her. Way to go little rocker chick!

Top 8: Scott MacIntyre's search is over

Scott's mom looks younger than him!

Scott MacIntyre

Wait! Where's the piano?!?!?!?

Scott is sans keys and with an electric guitar for Survivor's "The Search Is Over."

Ouch, that one note hurt my ears something fierce. He tried to reach for the rafters on some of the notes, and he didn't get even close.

Happy to see him standing upright, but he is not the power ballad dude at all. He seems to know his days are numbered, 'cause he said he wanted to show his versatility before he gets sent home.

He's a cutey with the new haircut, and I probably should just leave it at that.

Top 8: Anoop Desai shows his true colors

I knew Anoop was going to give a shout-out to the Tar Heels!

Anoop Desai

Way to show that UNC love.

Anoop shares a birthday with David Cook, but does he share the chops?

He certainly doesn't share the fashion sense, 'cause that green striped sweater is  Peanuts character all the way.

Noop Dogg the balladeer has returned with "True Colors," and he's trying to work the crowd a little bit with the smoothness.

Hmmm. Not sure how I feel about this one.

His is one that I feel like I have to rewind the Tivo and see whether it was that good or whether it just was so much better than his dreadful turn last week singing Usher.

I did like that he apologized for coming off a bit salty at the judges' criticism last week. It was kind of classy.

Top 8: Lil Rounds does Tina Turner - but not well

Maybe I am too Southern because I never doubted that Lil's name was real.

Lil Rounds

Apparently there was some question, and her mama had to clear it up.

I wish she could have shed some light on the mystery of what has happened with Lil and her singing.

She started out this competition so strong, and now she appears to be flaming out. Her version of Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It" was hard to watch.

Lil comes out almost every week looking great, but the "it" factor that seemed to mark her as a front-runner is nowhere to be found tonight.

Poor Lil.

Top 8: All Kris Allen wants to do is dance

Kris tackles Don Henley's "All She Wants to Do Is Dance," and he got funky with it.

Kris Allen

Maybe a little too funky. I know the contestants are supposed to make the songs their own, but Kris rendered that song unrecognizable.

It was a far cry from his exceptional performance last week. And what was up with Simon giving himself a shout-out as hot?

Jealous much?

Top 8: Danny Gokey wants you to stand by him

Danny boy is the oldest, having been born in 1980.

Danny Gokey

For some reason, I thought he was younger than that, but whatever. He sings Mickey Gilley's version of "Stand By Me," and it gets a little disco for me at some point.

It seems a good fit for his voice; however, something about it just doesn't resonate with me like he usually does. The judges are raving like crazy, and I wonder whether I'm missing something because I didn't hear "brilliant."

And is that some modernized version of a "For Members Only" jacket he's wearing?

Top 8: The gang kicks it off

Without giving away my age, I will say that I am old enough to remember the music of the 1980s.

Top eight

That's why I am psyched for tonight as the contestants will be singing songs from the year of their birth. So pretty much the night could be referred to as an '80s theme were it not for the little rocker chick, Allison, who was born in 1992 ... talk about a young'un!

Not only do I remember the tunes, but the acts were some of my favorites.  So heaven help any of these contestants that mail it in with a karaoke performance!

I was just looking at some photos from the 1980s that a former classmate posted on Facebook, and I seriously had a moment of "What was I thinking with that hair and outfit?" I hope the great eight won't think the same thing about their song stylings when they look back on tonight's performances.

Oh snap! Ryan busted out the judges' baby pics, and Paula totally looks the same. Straight up!

Check out EW's power rankings of tonight's performers and see whether you agree.
