March 31, 2009 Top 9: And we're offPosted: 08:09 PM ET
The intro is done and now we have entered the land of "Top Downloads." ![]() When I first heard tonight's theme, I immediately started thinking all types of wicked thoughts. With so broad a range, there's no telling which downloads the contestants will choose to sing. I couldn't help but imagine someone rocking a little Flo Rida, Miley Cyrus or (heaven forbid) Britney Spears' "If You Seek Amy." That will never happen, but how delicious would that be? The latter got me considering what a Britney themed night might be like. Especially if "American Idol" could convince Ms. Spears to serve as a mentor. Can't you just see her telling the contestants to "Sing the lyrics like you feel them y'all!" Oh well. A girl can dream can't she? Back to the show. Randy says the "competition is just getting started," and Kara gets to define artistry. They don't trust Paula with a serious question, and she just gets to tell us that she is hiding no props under the table tonight. Ryan says the door is thrown wide open for song choice with the popular downloads from iTunes. The group took a field trip to Ryan's American Top 40 radio show. Nicely played, Ryan. **SPOILER ALERT: This blog entry reveals the name of the contestant leaving the show. Do not continue reading if you do not want to know the results.**
And then there were nine. I had some rough moments there when they announced the bottom two. I was prepared for the first shocking upset of the season, but thankfully cooler heads prevailed, and ... ... Michael Sarver did not make the cut. So what did you think? How were the performances? Were you as stunned as I was at the bottom two? **SPOILER ALERT: Thursday night’s blog will eventually reveal the contestant leaving the show. Do not visit the final entry of the blog if you do not want to know the results.** Michael Sarver has the lowest votes and must sing for his chance. Will the judges save him? Filed under: Uncategorized Top 10: More Stevie, pleasePosted: 08:55 PM ET
Stevie Wonder, I am ready to forgive you for your performance with the Jonas Brothers at the Grammys. ![]() Before we even got to his singing, Simon weighed in that Matt and Michael were in the bottom two because America didn't like them. Oh, please. Thank goodness we quickly got to Mr. Wonder singing a medley of "My Cherie Amour," "Superstition," "All About The Love Again," and one of my personal favorites, "Overjoyed." The "Idol" contestants were up and dancing, as were the judges. Stevie worked the piano keys, the harmonica and the audience. He even sent a shout-out to President Barack Obama and "American Idol." Why oh why couldn't we just have a full hour of Stevie Wonder? Filed under: television Top 10: The bottom two indicate the world has gone crazyPosted: 08:44 PM ET
Allison Iraheta is safe, as is Anoop Desai. Good for them. Danny Gokey is so cute with his little glasses and his vest. Can't you just see him as a little kid? He's safe. Could Megan Joy grip Scott MacIntyre any harder? She must have held him steady because while Scott was in the bottom three, Ryan soon sent him back as safe. That leaves Matt and Michael. They're the bottom two. What in the world is going on? Are we being punked? Did anyone check to see if Ashton Kutcher was in the audience tonight? Filed under: Uncategorized Top 10: Joss Stone and Smokey Robinson are the ones for mePosted: 08:35 PM ET
Joss Stone, you saucy little vixen. ![]() I really need her to give some of these other female singers in the game tips on how to work the fem-swagger, because she was all over it. She and Smokey Robinson have officially won my "Quiet Storm" award for their performance of "You're The One For Me." Smokey's voice was not at its best, but Smokey on his worst day is still better than so many on their best. Loves it! Matt Giraud and Michael Sarver are in the bottom three. One of these names is a shock. I'll give you two guesses as to who and the first one doesn't count. Matt brought the sexy last night with "Let's Get It On." I am stunned. Adam Lambert is safe. In other news, water is wet. Lil Rounds and Kris Allen will also be back next week. Did I mention that I am stunned? Filed under: television Top 10: Ruben Studdard returns to the 'Idol' stagePosted: 08:26 PM ET
Boy, have I missed the Velvet Teddy Bear! ![]() Ruben is looking good! Appears to have lost some weight and still sounding great. I hope that performance of his new song "Together" was abbreviated, because it seemed to be over way too quickly. Poor Ryan looked like a little kid standing next to the big man and winner of Season Two. Got mad love for you Ruuuuuuuuuuuben! The medley of Motown hits reminds me of some news that broke today. It seems that there had been some question as to whether or not the contestants are lip-syncing on the show. According to an official spokesperson for “American Idol”: “The contestants do not lip-sync during any performance on "American Idol." During the group performances, which are outside the competition, the contestants do sing along to their own pre-recorded vocal track, due to the extensive choreography, and to balance their voices with open mics against a screaming audience. The competition performances do not use any pre-recorded vocals or music whatsoever.” Well, that clears that up. The Top 10 performed some of the more famous Motown tunes like "You're All I Need to Get By," "Keep Me Hanging On" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." If you ask me, they oversold it a bit. I didn't love it. Filed under: television |
