Yes, they’re criticized as the “Grannies.” Yes, they tend to leave out any number of songs, albums or artists that may stand the test of time, rewarding popularity over artistry. Yes, with 110 categories, the names of the winners will have vanished from memory within five minutes of being hailed.
But they’re still the Grammys, the music business’ biggest award, and (some) attention must be paid. (If you want to pick your own best of 2008, go to iReport.com and testify away.)
There are always some intriguing inclusions - even if the reasons for those inclusions are debatable. Take “Raising Sand,” the album of the year nominee from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Was it nominated because it’s a genuinely interesting and often great album, or because the powers that be wanted to honor the Led Zeppelin frontman for his years of service? Doesn’t matter now. At least it’s there.
And how about Jamey Johnson’s “That Lonesome Song,” which a friend of mine - a diehard country fan, as in the Cash/Loretta/Haggard tradition of country music - characterized as “one of the few interesting things I’ve heard this year”? It’s nice that he’s recognized.
CNN’s iReporters have some picks that dovetail with the Grammys’. Maddogza loves Coldplay and rates “Viva La Viva” highly. Zach2LNYC picked Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” as his best of the year - and the Grammys may agree. And Jimbon5859 loved the Raconteurs’ “Consolers of the Lonely,” which is up for best rock album.

Political controversy is always fodder for satire, and songwriter Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray: The Musical,” “South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut”) has wasted little time in taking on Proposition 8, which changed the California state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman and eliminated same-sex marriage.
Shaiman’s work is now a video on Funnyordie.com that stars John C. Reilly, Neil Patrick Harris, Allison Janney and - as Jesus Christ - Jack Black. Watch it here.
